The City of Tshwane Council has placed City Manager Johann Mettler on precautionary suspension with full pay, pending an independent investigation. Council also resolved to start disciplinary proceedings against CFO Gareth Mnisi over allegations found to be less serious misconduct. The Mayor says administration remains stable and services will continue. The DA, however, has condemned the suspension as unlawful, alleging 13 votes were deducted after being counted and says it is seeking legal advice. The Department of Basic Education is threatening legal action as Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube demands immediate restoration of electricity and water at the department's head office in Pretoria. The department says its account is in good standing and the disconnection was made in error by the City of Tshwane. It is now warning legal action if services are not restored. Speaking at BNC#8 in Hermanus, Cilliers Brink - DA mayoral candidate for Tshwane - delivered a sharp warning on the growing threat of collapsing municipalities in South Africa. He argues that failing local governments undermine personal liberty by wasting taxpayer money and neglecting critical infrastructure. Drawing on his experience in office, Brink highlights mismanagement, political instability, and shrinking capital budgets as key issues. He proposes increased private sector involvement and long-term partnerships to restore service delivery, rebuild infrastructure, and prevent further economic and institutional decline.
