No one could have predicted that Sophie Blanchard would become France's leading aeronaut, but she flew higher than any woman before her. Willa Brown was the first Black woman to earn a pilot's license in America, but her accomplishments didn't end there. In many ways, she deserves credit for the famed Tuskegee Airmen. Also features Red Moon Road's song Sophie Blanchard 1778 (Official Aeronaut of the Empire and Restoration)
Ottawa based singer-songwriter Kae Shelby joins us on Episode 483 of Folk Roots Radio to chat about her music and debut album “Music & Motorcycles”. Kae Shelby is another one of those musicians who had to wait to record her own music; and after a very successful career in law enforcement, that day, and her debut album have finally arrived. Like all of the musicians we talk to who are following their dream, this is quite an inspirational interview. It’s a real pleasure to share it with you today. Kae Shelby's story really fits with the ethos behind this radio show; We truly are all about the music and the people that make it! We hope you’ll stay with us to check it out. We also take a look at more of the new music we've received and, this time around, we include tracks from Windborne, Anna Ludlow, Si Kahn, Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen, Rod Abernethy, Red Moon Road and The Levins. Check out the full playlist on the website: https://folkrootsradio.com/folk-roots-radio-episode-483-feat-kae-shelby-more-new-releases/
Manitoba singer-songwriter Del Barber released a wonderful new album this year - the Americana flavoured "Easy Keeper". Four years in the making, this album really packs a punch. 11 great songs, that are at times deeply personal, and yet at others, quite celebratory. A renowned storyteller in song, Del Barber has produced five critically acclaimed albums and been nominated for JUNO Awards, Western Canadian Music Awards, and Canadian Folk Music Awards. Easy Keeper was predominantly recorded in Manitoba, and produced by Del Barber with Grant Siemens (Corb Lund, Tom Russell), with Bill Western on pedal steel, Bernie Thiessen on bass and Ivan Burke on drums with Geoff Hilhorst (Leeroy Stagger, The Deep Dark Woods) on keys, and Jeremy Rusu (Rosie & The Riveters, Red Moon Road) on accordion. For more information about the music of Del Barber, visit https://delbarber.com. Music: Del Barber, "Dancing In The Living Room", "Louise" and "Easy Keeper" from "Easy Keeper" (2019, Acronym Records).

Once a year, we help out our pals at UMFM 101.5 during their Pledge-O-Rama fund drive and head down to the UMFM studios to record a live on-air episode. We've done it in 2013, 2014 and now 2015 as well. This episode was recorded about a month ago, on election night, just minutes after we watched Stephen Harper's concession speech on live TV. Our guests were Daniel Peloquin-Hopfner of excellent roots/folk trio Red Moon Road and UMFM's own program director Michael Elves

Music from Celtic Colours 2015, a feature on Dar Williams, and one on Red Moon Road. Troubled by the new iTunes / OS mismatch and a dodgy CD / writer or drive. And the phone won't work for me this week. I need to lie down....
A look ahead to the local star-studded tribute to Gordon Lightfoot, a little off-beat Christmas music, and some of the best of 2013!
