Producer/bassist Jim Reilley will most likely be remembered as a founding member (along with musical partner Reese Campbell) of seminal folk rock band The New Dylans. Founded in 1986,the band barnstormed the US throughout the 90's and won critical praise from Rolling Stone (who called their songs “offbeat classics”) and virtually every other major music publication and major newspaper. The Village Voice placed the band in the top 5 Ep's of 1986 in their prestigious Pazz and Jop Poll. The band won the hearts and minds of many fans in the then burgeoning AAA American radio format and had several feature spots on important tastemaking radio shows including NPR's All Things Considered, Idiot's Delight with Vin Scelsa, Partridge Family Imp Danny Bonaduce's WLUP show, Mountain Stage, WXPN's World Café and Acoustic Café. Michael Stipe of R.E.M. proclaimed The New Dylans his favorite band of 1986 and Natalie Merchant (of 10,000 Maniacs) would often jump onstage and sing with the band. After 10 years of solid touring often over 175 dates a year sharing stages with many luminaries including (R&R Hall Of Famers) The Band, Reilley moved to Nashville to sign a writing and production deal with Curb Records. As a songwriter, Reilley had over 60 songs recorded by such artists as Hal Ketchum, Sam Bush, Vince Gill, Lauren Daigle, Hillary Scott, Claudia Church, Leann Rimes, Cowboy Crush, Jana Kramer, Jack Ingram, Lila McCann, Carly Pearce, John Cowsill, Vicki Peterson (The Bangles), Tim O'Brien and had a European hit with Danish Rock legend Peter Belli. In his career, Reilley has produced or made music with Sheryl Crow, Pam Tillis, Lee Brice, Levon Helm, Ethan Hawke, John Osborne, Brothers Osborne, The Fleshtones, Pure Prairie League, Leann Rimes, Rodney Crowell, Shawn Colvin, Rodney Atkins, Cowboy Jack Clement, Lucinda Williams, Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Uncle Tupelo, Kathleen Edwards, Mary Gauthier, Superdrag, Gillian Welch, Prince's  New Power Generation, Linda Hargrove, Harlan Howard, Jim Lauderdale, Hillary Scott, Jenna Von Oy, Tommy Womack, Carly Pearce, Jana Kramer, Linda Davis, Vince Gill, Cheetah Chrome of The Dead Boys, Vicki Peterson (The Bangles), The Mavericks, Jack Ingram, Tiffany, NRBQ, Patty Larkin, Dave Van Ronk, Leah Andreone, Diamond Rio, Hank Williams Jr, Jett Williams, Shel Silverstein, Townes Van Zandt, Richie Havens, Al Perkins, The Story, Kasey Chambers, Del McCoury Band, Minton Sparks, Joy Lynn White, Sam Bush, David Mead, Daniel Tashian, members of The Jayhawks, Wilco, Genesis, Cheap Trick, Buckcherry, The Milk Carton Kids, Lake Street Dive, Blondie, John Mellencamp, Foo Fighters, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Doobie Brothers, Counting Crows, The Wallflowers, Joe Perry Band, The Black Crowes, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Bangles, Ben Folds, Alabama Shakes, Jack White band, Ten Years After, The Black Keys, The Band, The Beach Boys, 10,000 Maniacs, R.E.M. and more.www.producerjimreilley.com"Still on the Run" - https://www.fbrmusic.com/Host - Trey MitchellIG - treymitchellphotography IG - feeding_the_senses_unsensoredFB - facebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848Threads - www.threads.net/@treymitchellphotographySponsorship Information/Guest Suggestions  -  ftsunashville@gmail.com

When you imagine the tools of a guitar shredder, chances are you see a sharp-angled electric 6-string running into a smokin'-hot, fully saturated British halfstack of sorts—the type of thing that'll blow your hair back. You might not be picturing an acoustic steel-string or a banjo, and that's a mistake, because some of the most face-melting players to walk this earth work unplugged—like Molly Tuttle. The 31-year-old Californian has been performing live for roughly 20 years, following in a deep family tradition of roots-music players. Tuttle studied at Berklee College of Music, and has gone on to collaborate with some of the biggest names in bluegrass and folk, including Béla Fleck, Billy Strings, Buddy Miller, Sierra Hull, and Old Crow Medicine Show. Her 2023 record, City of Gold, won the Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album. The furious flatpicking solo on “San Joaquin,” off of that Grammy-winning record, is the subject of this unplugged episode of Shred With Shifty. Shiflett can shred on electric alright, but how does he hold up running leads on acoustic? It's a whole different ballgame. Thankfully, Tuttle is on hand, equipped with a Pre-War Guitars Co. 6-string, to demystify the techniques and gear that let her tear up the fretboard. Tune in to hear plenty of insider knowledge on how to amplify and EQ acoustics, what instruments can stand in for percussion in bluegrass groups, and how to improvise in bluegrass music. ReString Appalachia www.americansongcatcher.com/ReStringAppalachia ReString Appalachia is an initiative by American Songcatcher to get instruments that were lost due to Helene back in the hands of musicians throughout Appalachia. This effort is supported by over 125 roots musicians, including Bela Fleck, Rhiannon Giddens, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Infamous Stringdusters and many more, as well as several non profits, instrument makers, venues, festivals, actors, visual artists and media outlets. - It's been nearly a month since Helene brought unfathomable devastation to Appalachia. I've honestly never been so consumed with grief after a natural disaster. I have countless memories of performing, camping and hiking... so many good times throughout Appalachia over the last 15 years. I got married in Swannanoa. I almost moved to both Brevard and Asheville. I also have dozens and dozens of dear, talented friends throughout East TN, WNC, SC, North GA, and FL. It's been hard to embrace that it'll never be the same, that so many are suffering. Words fell short in a time like this. Action speaks, and I had to do something. So, through the American Songcatcher network, I've been quietly building an initiative that will put instruments back in the hands of those who lost them due to the storm. The exact, or comparable instrument. This effort is called ReString Appalachia. Whether you're a professional, or picking for the love of it, the importance of continuing the living tradition of Appalachian music culture is paramount, and American Songcatcher aims to keep it that way. Over the next month, you're going to see 100's of musicians, non profits, venues, festivals, actors, artists and media outlets post about ReString Appalachia. If you, or someone you know lost an instrument due to Helene, if you have instruments to donate, or if you are seeking a tax-exempt donation to help us cover the costs, please visit the link in the show notes. American Songcatcher will be back very soon with a very special live episode on Western North Carolina music history. Thank you for listening. Here's to the songs of old, may they live on forever. www.americansongcatcher.com/ReStringAppalachia --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/americansongcatcher/support

Looking back over the past fifty-or-so years, we find a large gathering assembled under a large, all-inclusive tent, called Americana. There's hardly a definition that's been assigned and it's hardly what we'd term ‘a genre'. It is, rather, a mood of the music and a narrative of the storytelling defines it. Like the dozens of genres that line it's walls, we've come to know what we're listening to: blues, gospel, folk and tradition, jazz, and everything in between. This week we'll be stepping into that tent to congregate and celebrate that ‘sound we know' called Americana. The digital bins will take us only so far back, celebrating the music of Bob Dylan, Buddy Miller, Gillian Welch, Joe Ely, Old Crow Medicine Show and a couple dozen others. Just what's needed and built on playlists worthy of the very best of the Americana Hours broadcast each morning here on KOWS Community Radio. If you're a fan…or want to know more about what's under the tent…drop on by this coming Friday morning here on Deeper Roots.

It's been quite a stir for the Minnesota progressive folk-rock-country sextet Maygen & The Birdwatcher. In late 2021 they released their debut full-length album, Moonshine – (which Americana UK wrote is “stunning”) – earning them Midwest Country Music Awards for Album of the Year and Americana Artist of the Year) and landed opportunities to join festival stages with bands like Old Crow Medicine Show, Paul Cauthen, Grace Potter, and The Ozark Mountain Daredevils. They continued the momentum in late 2022, releasing Moonshine's companion EP, with the “lively and charming” (Adventures in Americana) Bootleggin' At The Flower Shoppe which took home a 2nd round of wins for Album of the Year and Americana Artist of the Year at the Midwest Country Music Organization's annual awards show. The mood-boosting Americana band adventurously blurs the sounds of country, bluegrass, folk, and blues. Lead singers Maygen Lacey, and Noah Neumann intentionally work to draw on their vastly different musical influences and vocal styles to bring a fresh and unexpected mix of songs to light. From beauty to grit, sadness to silliness, the common thread is that this crew loves music, and playing it together, and it shows.

When comedy and magic collide, the result is a spectacle of humor and surprise that captivates audiences. This podcast episode introduces us to the remarkable Danny Winston, whose journey through the realms of comedy, illusion, and music is as multifaceted as it is fascinating. Host Annette Smith engages Danny in a conversation that is both enlightening and entertaining, providing listeners with an intimate look into the life of a performer who has mastered the art of bringing joy to others. Danny's playlist is a treasure trove of memories, each song echoing a significant moment in his life. From the rebellious beats of Cypress Hill to the soulful twang of "Wagon Wheel," the music that underscores his narrative is as diverse as his talents. This rich musical tapestry not only sets the stage for his performances but also serves as a time machine, transporting him back to his formative years, filled with high school escapades and early encounters with the art of magic. The discussion delves into the profound impact of Danny's father, a prankster whose legacy shaped his son's unique blend of humor and illusion. We hear anecdotes of playful mischief, insights into the delicate craft of managing a live audience, and the unexpected reactions that come with revealing one's profession as a magician. These stories are not just entertaining but offer a glimpse into the intricacies of performance art, where timing, wit, and spontaneity are essential tools of the trade. One cannot ignore the role of comedy in navigating life's challenges, as Danny highlights the cathartic power of humor in confronting sensitive topics. By marrying truth with deception, he crafts narratives that resonate with audiences, turning personal trials into shared laughter. This approach to comedy is therapeutic, allowing both the comedian and the audience to find solace in humor, even when tackling the most delicate of subjects. The episode also celebrates creative collaborations, such as Danny's work with Canadian comedy legends and the surprising revelations that come from guest-curated playlists. These collaborative experiences enrich his artistic journey, providing unexpected opportunities for growth and reflection. Music remains a constant companion, whether pumping up the energy with "Sabotage" by Beastie Boys before a show or reminiscing about the raw authenticity of Old Crow Medicine Show. As we conclude the episode, Danny shares his latest creative endeavors, teasing an upcoming comedy-horror flick set to premiere on Amazon Prime. His character, Pastor Sparks, embodies the quirkiness one would expect from a magician with a soft spot for Street Fighter II. His parting words of wisdom, paired with a recommendation to start each day with music, leave listeners with a sense of optimism and the affirmation that life is indeed better with a soundtrack. In this podcast episode, the laughter is contagious, the illusions are enchanting, and the music is deeply personal. It's an exploration of how Danny Winston has woven his love for stand-up, magic, and melodies into a vibrant tapestry of life, offering us a chance to reflect on the soundtracks of our own lives. Join us for a journey through the magical symphony of a stand-up life, where every day is a new opportunity for a laugh, a trick, and a song.Check out Danny Whitson hereListen to the playlist on SpotifyWatch the episode on YouTubeFollow Music Junkies everywhere  Make sure to HIT that LIKE BUTTON and SUBSCRIBE to our Channel to be notified of new episodes!Support the show

A Nashvillian by way of Philadelphia, Vinnie Paolizzi has spent the better part of the last decade in the songwriting trenches, making a name for himself as a rising singer-songwriter to watch. His abilities as a live performer have led him to various roles from playing guitar for rising star Brittney Spencer to playing his original music in the round with songwriting legend Dean Dillon.  Vinnie self-titled LP— (out now) was produced by Old Crow Medicine Show's Mike Harris, and it  showcases a pocket of the Nashville community that has blazed its own trail in a time when Music Row seems to have forgotten its past, evident clearly in this first taste of the new music. Harkening back to the halcyon days of songwriting in Nashville—back when people like Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle, and Guy Clark were kicking around and writing timeless songs before they became household names—Vinnie Paolizzi is ripe with collaborations from up and comers like Chapman and Meg McRee, as well as tried and true road warriors like Harris and Adam Hood. And the final product feels like that, like cracking a beer on the porch and working through a new song with an old friend.  For more on Vinnie Paolizzi, visit: vinniepaolizzimusic.com

Along with the announcement, the band also shares their wistful new single “Lonely In This Town."Produced by longtime collaborator Oscar Charles (Caroline Spence, Charlie Worsham), Dusk is an electrifying dose of lightning in a bottle over its nine tracks, running a gamut of late-night, fall-in-love party anthems and stripped-down meditations. Boy Named Banjo's songwriting is as incisive as ever, artfully grappling with lust and longing, hope and heartbreak. Sonically, the band's performances on the record are nothing short of exhilarating, blurring the lines between Music Row and Laurel Canyon with lush harmonies and bold cinematic arrangements. The end result is a masterfully crafted, larger-than-life major label debut from a group that continues to grow by leaps and bounds with every release.Widely beloved by loyal fans nationwide for their high-octane live shows, Boy Named Banjo will kick off their coast-to-coast Dusk Til Dawn Tour next month on September 14 in Atlanta – tickets can be found here and a full list of dates can be found below. Audiences will be treated to performances from their extensive catalog and new music from Dusk, in addition to their recent uplifting anthem “What Keeps Me Going” which earned praise from CMT, Holler, Taste of Country, Whiskey Riff and more. 2023 has already shaped up to be another banner year for the band following their Grand Ole Opry debut, a momentous milestone that was documented at People.Expertly melding an array of musical influences, the five-piece band is a fusion of contemporary country, Americana and folk-rock stacked on a foundation of bluegrass. Their self-released 2012 debut The Tanglewood Sessions helped earn the band a spot at Bonnaroo, while their 2014 follow-up, Long Story Short, led to festival slots everywhere from Hangout Fest to Dierks Bentley's Seven Peaks. After signing with Mercury Records Nashville in 2020, the following year saw the release of their genre-defying EP Circles, which landed them a performance at the historic Ryman Auditorium alongside dates supporting the likes of Kip Moore, Hank Williams, Jr., Old Crow Medicine Show, and The Cadillac Three. In 2022, Boy Named Banjo made their CMA Fest debut playing at the Ascend Amphitheatre Nighttime Concert as well as a sold-out hometown show at Nashville's Brooklyn Bowl. Quickly becoming The Bluegrass American Idol, Molly Tuttle's new album City of Gold is hot off the heels of her Grammy-award winning 2022 record Crooked Tree, which also got her a nomination in one of the coveted "Big Four" categories: Best New Artist. Aaand we know that WE ALL have had eyes on Molly for years, BUT since she's fully embraced the bluegrass genre on these last new albums, Best New Artist makes a lot of sense. Bluegrass was the music she grew up with in Palo Alto, CA with her guitar-teacher father helping her soak in the vibrant scene. She's also learning how to take control of the bluegrass narrative by telling her story and sharing her perspective through her new songs. That rings so true with the new record, City of Gold, co-produced by Tuttle and Dobro-master Jerry Douglas (of Alison Kraus & Union Station fame), mostly co-written with her partner Ketch Secor (of Old Crow Medicine Show) and featuring her crack backing band: Golden Highway. She's writing bluegrass songs that are fun and insightful at the same time. We get a bluegrass version of Alice in Wonderland, the story of a woman fighting for her bodily autonomy and not to mention that time she married Dave Matthews on a road trip (LOL J/K, but that is a real new song with the real Dave). She digs into her new album as well as finding her own way in the patriarchal world of Bluegrass and leveling up about her alopecia, an autoimmune skin disease, causing hair loss. Molly Tuttle is a great hang, an inspiration for us all and has made a fabulous new album, City of Gold. President Biden has made it official: He's running again. And there is yet to be a serious challenger to Donald Trump. Is the upcoming race full of undesirable candidates? Then, politicians seem to agree that that TikTok should be regulated or banned in the U.S. as concern increases over China using the app to spy on Americans. How serious is this threat, and how will people react if it's prohibited? And music has an ability to bring us together, and country musician Ketch Secor from Old Crow Medicine Show takes it as his duty. Secor talks about the importance of trying to unite people from both sides of the gun debate — to talk about real solutions. Plus, he shares his new song “Louder Than Guns.”  This is all discussed in front of an audience in Washington D.C. for a special live Left Right and Center.

Can Country music help lead the U.S. out of the gun debate? There is a long history of famous country musicians using their platforms to comment on social and political issues. But since the lead singer of The Chicks, Natalie Maines, was ostracized after criticizing then President George W. Bush, country music stars have felt safer keeping their political views out of the public eye. Musician Ketch Secor of the band Old Crow Medicine Show is trying to change that. After the shooting at Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee, Ketch wrote an Op-ed in The New York Times calling for country music stars to let go of the fear of retaliation from their fanbase, and to break their silence on the gun debate. Audie talks with Ketch about what it's like to be a musician and a parent in Nashville right now and what he thinks country musicians can do to help prevent another mass shooting.  To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy
