I sat down with Twintwa's David Fort to talk about returning to Winnipeg for a wild show this Sunday (Jan. 8 at Bevvy Teyems Studio), nostalgic feelings for the Winnipeg airport, performing Twintwa's "deep Earth folk" as a solo act on this trip, and much more. There's also a very brief chat partway through with Jo Wolfclan (who was nearby when we did the interview). Jo is performing at Sunday's event alongside Twintwa, Eagle Lake Owls, Velveteen, and Kaiti Rieder Three of the four songs on this episode are from the Bleeding Hearts EP, which is a collaborative project by Twintwa, Forest Her Dress, and Eagle Lake Owls. It's (almost) the end of the year, so I decided to turn my annual year-end "favourite local albums" list into a podcast! Here's part two -- the top five of my overall top 15 -- in an overstuffed episode that includes clips from interviews with a number of artists who made the list, and much more. Part one, numbers 6 through 15, can be heard here. Part two includes releases by KEN mode, Christine Fellows, Age of Self, Jacob Brodovsky, and Scott Nolan. As mentioned in the intro, I'm sure I've missed some great stuff, both on this episode and the first one, and there are also a lot of albums I didn't consider for 2022 -- mainly stuff that came out too late this year for me to fully absorb. Records that came out on streaming this year but have physical copies in 2023 count as "2023" releases as well. I’ve been doing this a while, but I’m not the only long-running music podcaster in this sordid little burg. The hosts of Warped and Creased have been talking about (and reviewing) extreme metal since 2014!We had a conversation about podcasting as a lifeline during the pandemic, the ongoing appeal of physical media in this streaming dystopia, an upcoming show they’re presenting (alongside Eye and Ear Control Records) at the Park Theatre, and much more! Winnipeg’s Hypernashion has been combining electronic beats, blues/rock guitars, dub reggae and punk rock influences and more for many years, and they’re almost ready to release a new album on their own DIY Hyper Recordz label.I sat down with three members of the group for a conversation about the collective’s unique sound, combining live instruments with electronic beats, the band’s Polish roots, and much more. Had a good chat on the podcast with Matt Pitre, who you may recognize from metal outfit Book of Ghosts! We talked about new music from that project, as well as his new hip-hop venture as Jerry Can, upcoming group Neighbours... and much more! NOTE: Due to an equipment issue, the first three minutes or so of the interview has fairly crappy sound quality (mostly my end of the conversation), but after that, it's fine. It’s the triumphant return of Bicycle Face to the podcast!I hung out with the mostly non-Christmas joy-pop duo and talked about their upcoming space-themed album, returning from the great Unicycle Face schism, Myrrhvana and Xmas EPs, making music videos with cows, and so much more! Note: At a few points there's some weird robot-sounding (thematically appropriate, eh?) feedback on one of the BF members' ends of the conversation, but it certainly doesn't take away from the interview at all. Here's one more throwback (the last one for a while) -- a re-release of one of the "lost" podcasts from 2014 -- an early Witchpolice recording that didn't get added to the current podcast feed. This one was originally released as #80 in June of that year, and features an in-studio interview and performance by local garage rockers The Zags (later to become The Zorgs), as well as a special call-in guest: Neil Osborne of iconic Canadian rockers 54-40! I hope you dig it. It's in the show's old format, so if you're new to Witchpolice Radio, you're better off listening to a 2022 episode, but if you're looking for a fun throwback, here we are. Here's what I said about it back in 2014: This is a full episode! Not only do we have Winnipeg garage-punk weirdos the Zags in-studio for a live performance, but we talk to Neil Osborne —frontman of Canadian rock icons 54-40 — over the phone! 54-40 is currently crowdfunding a brand new record, so we talk to Neil about that and about the band’s 30+ year history. The Zags get animated about this week’s randomly-generated theme word (“hands”), and good times are had by all!Back to your regularly-scheduled programming next episode!
Great chat with the delightful pizza-loving (they made a concept album about it) weirdos in Butterfist Funhouse. We talked about the new record, Illegal Oregano: an Italian Drama, songwriting, cannibalism, nebulous genre labels, and much more. Here's another throwback -- a re-release of one of the "lost" podcasts from 2014 -- an early Witchpolice recording that didn't get added to the current podcast feed. This one was originally released as #73, featuring Matt and Patrick of Montreal ska legends The Planet Smashers as our guests. Ignore what I say in the intro: this was ONE of our early attempts at interviewing an artist from out of town, but not the very first. I hope you dig it. It's in the show's old format, so if you're new to Witchpolice Radio, you're better off listening to a 2022 episode, but if you're looking for a fun throwback, here we are. ...and yes, that cover image is an accurate depiction of our recording setup back then. We did everything in the jamspace in then-co-host Jon's basement. The dryer in the background was a prominent feature. Here's what I said about it back in 2014: This week we talk to Matt and Patrick of the legendary Planet Smashers about their new record, their experiences as a ska band with 20 years of history, and this week's randomly-generated theme word: TERROR.Back to your regularly-scheduled programming next episode!
Rap battles in 2022 are a completely different thing than I remember. I had a very enlightening conversation with Pacman, who has been participating in battles here in Winnipeg and across Canada.Check out our chat about battling as comedy/performance art rather than a strictly musical pursuit, using rap as a springboard to stand-up comedy and writing, whether there’s a “line” that shouldn’t be crossed when insulting an opponent, and much more! There’s a municipal election happening, Winnipeg, and as your friendly neighbourhood music podcast, I sat down with a couple of folks from the local music scene who happen to be running for council.Stay tuned for a great conversation with Omar Kinnarath (who you may remember from local hardcore bands like Intafada and Rogue Nation back in the day), and Natalie Smith (ex-Silence Kit, now in Mulligrub). As I’ve said in EVERY election-themed show I’ve done over the years, I’m not endorsing either candidate (I’m not in their wards anyway) or anyone else. Please read up on the candidates in your area and vote for whoever best represents you. Just vote.Back to your regularly-scheduled programming next episode! As many of you know, I lost my voice recently, so I couldn't record as many interviews this week as I usually would. In order to not miss an episode, I decided to re-release one of the "lost" podcasts from 2014 -- an early Witchpolice recording that didn't get added to the current podcast feed. This one was originally released as #83, featuring Joel "Beefdonut" Klaverkamp as our guest. It was selected based on your social media votes. I hope you dig it. It's in the show's old format, so if you're new to Witchpolice Radio, you're better off listening to a 2022 episode, but if you're looking for a fun throwback, here we are. Here's what I said about it back in 2014:This week, Sam and Rob hang out with longtime stalwart of the Winnipeg music scene, Joel Klaverkamp. In addition to 20+ years of work under the name Beefdonut (including an excellent new album), Joel has played with very recognizable names in the city's musical history, including The Hummers, Skingerbreadman ...and the legendary (only to us) band that convinced us DIY music was possible way back in the 90s, Alien Hybrid!Jon was away for this episode, so we couldn't use our regular studio spot in his basement. This one was recorded in a spot Joel had access to "high above Winnipeg's historic Exchange District," so if you notice an inferior sound quality throughout, it's because we're not on home ice for this one.Back to your regularly-scheduled content in a few days! Thanks, y'all!
Winnipeg indie/art rock outfit Yes We Mystic will soon cease to exist, but after more than a decade together, they’re going out with a bang.I talked to Mystic member Adam Fuhr about the band’s upcoming final LP, the video project that accompanies it, the Trust Fall hotline (1-877-347-5231), and how final is “final”, really? Want to hear more of Adam on the podcast? Check out his appearance on episode #473 (March 2020), talking about his House of Wonders label. Fred Warner, bassist and bandleader of jazz fusion outfit Freddy and the Fire Nation, is back on the show after first appearing on a Quick Hits episode last year.We talked about the band’s upcoming releases, about focusing on a slick, produced sound versus “that greasy goodness”, playing shows, and much more. Just a heads-up that there were some technical difficulties on this one (as heard in the intro), but it's still a fun listen. Also, since the Fire Nation's full-band recordings have yet to be released, the songs you'll hear on this podcast are Fred's solo demos. The inimitable Johnny Sizzle has been beating the shit out of an acoustic guitar since before some of you were born. The local acoustic-punk pioneer sat down for a wide-ranging interview (audio-only, technical difficulties) about his cross-Canada travels, frustrations with today’s Winnipeg punk scene, his radio show, the upcoming new record, and much, much more. Scott Nolan is one of Winnipeg's finest singer-songwriters, and on Sept. 3 he performed an intimate little set to a small crowd in my backyard. This isn't a regular podcast -- it's audio from Scott's live show, featuring musical highlights that make up about half of his total set. Scott was on a regular interview episode of the podcast back in May, talking about his gorgeous new record with composer/arranger Glenn Buhr, The Suburb Beautiful. To hear more of Scott Nolan on the podcast, check out episode #367 (March 2019) and #521 (Sept. 2021). Back to your regularly-scheduled interview show next week! It's the hardest working man in punk rock! There are a few people who have an all-purpose “pass” to come on the podcast anytime they have something to talk about, and one of those is folk-punk die-hard Greg Rekus.Greg is about to embark on (another) lengthy tour, kicking off with a local show at Blue Note Park on Sept. 7.We talked about his neverending adventures on the road, performing solo vs. full band, busting out of a pandemic-affected writer’s block, and much more. We go deep into a supernaturally-inspired electro-prog concept album on this episode, talking 'Luana Moth' with its creator, Antonio Mazza and his sister, Giovanna Mazza, who sings on the record. It's a fun one, and the record is abolutely deadly.
