One of my favorite shows is called “X-Minus One”.  It was a half-hour science fiction radio drama series that was broadcast from April 24, 1955 to January 9, 1958 in various timeslots on NBC radio. At the end of each episode they tell you where the stories they used came from before they adapted them for radio – and one of those sources was the publication “Astounding Science Fiction Magazine”. I jumped online to see if there were old copies I could look at, and I found a book – an anthology of many of the stories from that magazine. The book was published in 1954. The story was entitled “First Contact”, written by Murray Leinster in 1945. The story is credited as one of the first instances of a universal translator in science fiction. Jesus Followers Are Told to: “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you” MESSAGE SUMMARY: Jesus expects you, as a Jesus Follower, to go and to make Disciples while sharing God's Word through your personal relationships! Therefore, you should share the Word of the Lord with people that you know. However, when you discuss the Gospel with those you know well, you are often inhibited and constrained. Paul tells you, in Romans 1:16, that you should never be ashamed to communicate the Gospel: “I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.". When you communicate stories of your life situations and experiences with the people you know and with whom you have relationships, they will ask you questions. From these conversational questions will come a natural discourse about your faith and relationship with Jesus in your life because you are a Jesus Follower. In Mark 5:19-20, Jesus was very explicit that we are to go to our “friends” and tell them of Jesus' good news: “'Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.' And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.". Lindsay Clancy's jury has been weighing not guilty, not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility, first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and manslaughter — and defense trial attorney Bob Motta, who sat through all five weeks of testimony, says the split between them matters less than people think. Motta walks through what each verdict actually means: prison with no parole under some outcomes, commitment to a locked psychiatric facility with no maximum sentence under others. He points to Andrea Yates, who drowned her five children in 2001 and was found not guilty by reason of insanity in 2006 — and who has remained committed ever since, never released. Lindsay Clancy has been at Tewksbury State Hospital since the day her three children, Cora, Dawson, and Callan, died, paralyzed from the waist down after her own suicide attempt on January 24, 2023. She hasn't reported hearing voices since. He also addresses the malpractice suits Lindsay and her husband Patrick filed against her medical providers, and whether the criminal case changes those. Defense attorney and former prosecutor Eric Faddis picks up where a deadlock leaves off. If this jury hangs, DA Timothy Cruz likely seeks a retrial — Massachusetts just did exactly that in the Karen Read case. But there's another option: Lindsay Clancy could waive her right to a jury entirely and let one judge, instead of twelve laypeople, referee the fight between dueling psychiatrists. Faddis also revisits the bifurcation motion Kevin Reddington already lost — a hung jury may be the argument that gets it granted the second time around, splitting guilt from responsibility entirely. Two attorneys, one impossible case, and a defendant whose future may already be decided by someone else's. Give to help Chris make Truce Our season has spent a lot of time looking at how some evangelicals tied themselves to the GOP as the party became more conservative. But not every evangelical Republican was taken in by the conservative swing. In this episode, we're taking a look at Senator Mark Hatfield, an evangelical Republican who didn't follow the pack. Senator Mark Hatfield had a long and influential career in public service spanning nearly five decades. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II and earning degrees from Willamette University and Stanford University, Hatfield began his political journey in the Oregon Legislature, winning election to the Oregon House of Representatives in 1950 and then to the Oregon State Senate in 1954. He went on to become Oregon's youngest Secretary of State at age 34 and was elected Governor of Oregon in 1958, where he served two terms and oversaw the expansion of the state's infrastructure and environmental programs. In 1966, Hatfield was elected to the U.S. Senate, beginning a 30-year tenure that made him the longest-serving senator in Oregon's history at the time. In the Senate, Hatfield was known as a moderate Republican who often put conscience ahead of party, particularly on issues of war and defense spending. Deeply shaped by his wartime experiences and Christian faith, he consistently opposed military authorization bills, including votes against the Vietnam War and the Persian Gulf War, and co-sponsored efforts like a nuclear freeze resolution. Hatfield twice chaired the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee, using that position to direct federal funds to Oregon for health, transportation, and research projects, and to support biomedical research at institutions like the National Institutes of Health. His independent approach earned him respect across party lines, and although the GOP shifted rightward over time, he remained a distinctive figure in national politics until his retirement in 1997.
