Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness, yet they are frequently missed in the Emergency Department as they can be elusive. Only one in 246 patients who screen positive for an eating disorder at triage have a chief complaint suggesting it. These patients don't always fit the stereotype—many appear “healthy,” have normal BMI, or present with vague GI, cardiac, or neurological symptoms. Missing the diagnosis has important consequences. The earlier an eating disorder is identified and the earlier that appropriate treatment is initiated the better the long term outcomes. In this episode, with the expertise of Dr. Samantha Martin and Dr. Jennifer Tomlin, we'll break down the essential clinical clues, screening questions, red flags, and subtle exam findings that can help Emergency Physicians diagnose eating disorders early and initiate treatment to decrease mortality and long term morbidity in these young patients. Eating disorders need to be thought of as both a psychiatric condition and medical condition to optimize the pick up rate and appropriate management. Missing or mismanaging eating disorders in the ED means missing an opportunity to save a life and prevent long term morbidity... Do you feel trapped in an operation tunnel vision? Are you ready to shift your attention toward strategies for agency growth? Our guest today initially viewed strategy sessions as a luxury she could only afford once her agency had achieved significant success. However, upon receiving guidance from a coach to address alignment issues, she and her partner began scheduling daily strategy sessions and prioritizing working on the business rather than just in it. Tune in to hear about her accidental path to agency ownership and her vision for the future after implementing more intentional planning for growth. Samantha Martin is the co-owner of Prime Marketing Agency, a female-led experiential agency that creates epic brand experiences that leave a lasting impression. She discusses her entrepreneurial spirit and how she navigated through different roles before landing in her current position. In this episode, we'll discuss: Navigating cashflow constraints. Unshackling from RFPs and into a more relationship-building model. Prioritizing strategic development. The 0 to 100 Leap from Freelancer to Co-Ownership During her student years, Samantha was a member of a dance group that toured the US and Canada for various gigs contracted through an agency. This is where she ended up getting her start in the agency industry. Throughout the years, she kept working different gigs and staying open to possibilities working at different agencies at a time. Eventually, the start of the pandemic brought a unique opportunity to work at an agency startup, seeing its growth from the ground up. It was an important experience she took to her next opportunity, where she could become co-owner of an agency she'd previously worked at. It was practically a zero to 100 growth from being a gig worker at several agencies to owning a 50% stake in one. It was scary and risky but she knew how the business worked and felt ready to figure out her new role as owner. Navigating Cashflow Constraints and Cultural Complexities So far, the most challenging aspect of agency ownership for Samantha has been cashflow. As an agency that actually keeps and maintains equipment like foodtrucks, trailers, and large rigs, they've found it challenging to manage all these pieces while still accessing more freedom to grow the business quickly. They also have warehouses in three different cities in Canada, which adds to their operational expenses. Furthermore, while growing a team has been incredibly rewarding and recruiting both English-speaking and French-speaking professionals offers a great advantage for the agency, it can also be a challenge for the owners. Basically, there are cultural differences between both that they are actively working to smooth. After the pandemic, the agency has been fortunate to have a steady flow of leads and, while the number of clients has decreased, they have acquired larger accounts and diversified their portfolio across various industries. In the immediate future, Sam wants to focus on getting to a point where the agency has a healthy amount of both big and smaller clients, which not only provides stability in terms of revenue but also allows for better resource planning and team motivation. There will also be a focus on clearly defining which clients they want to service and building the specialized teams to address those particular needs. Unshackling from RFPs As her agency grows, Sam is also working on feeling more empowered to step away from some of the less-than-ideal parts of agency life, especially when it comes to filling RPFs. Requests for Proposal are already a controversial figure in the industry, with most agency owners hating them and striving to get to a point where they feel comfortable enough to deny them. RFPs are often time-consuming, costly, and offer no guarantee of securing the project, given the intense competition from multiple agencies. Successful agency owners have chosen to avoid responding to RFPs altogether, citing the time and cost involved in the process. These owners choose to focus on building relationships, showcasing their expertise through other means, and strategically selecting which RFPs to respond to. This allows them to not rely on the traditional RFP process and it's where Sam wants to steer her agency in the future since she considers the model is slowly dying. Heading to a Relationship-Building Model Shifting the focus from simply responding to Request for Proposals also allows agency owners to position themselves as advisors engaging with clients and prospects. Instead of spending time and effort on crafting proposals and competing with other agencies can often outweigh the potential benefits. Instead, agencies can decline RFPs respectfully and propose alternative solutions, such as paid discovery sessions or consultations, to demonstrate their expertise and value to clients. By reframing the conversation and showcasing their unique insights and capabilities, agencies can attract clients who value quality over price and are willing to invest in achieving the best results. This approach not only helps agencies stand out in a crowded marketplace but also fosters stronger, more collaborative relationships with clients based on trust and mutual understanding. Escaping Operational Tunnel Vision by Prioritizing Strategic Agency Development Part of saying no to RFPs is putting more focus on the bigger picture, which is a must for agency owners to continue to grow their business. After being in the weeds day after day working on accounts, for Sam it was luxury to shift to working on the business instead of in the business. Initially, it was almost a foreign concept for her to take time from day-to-day operations to work on planning for the bigger picture. It seemed silly to take two hours every day to just talk about the business when she and her partner talked about different aspects of operations on a daily basis. However, it was suggested by a coach that saw Sam and her partner's issues with the business were easily solvable by being more intentional about working on strategy. Now she can clearly see how this intentional focus on strategic planning and development has been beneficial for their company and has allowed them to better serve their clients and team. Years ago, I produced an album for the band STONE RIVER of which Renan was the lead singer, so we begin our chat about some of the fun times we had recording in an old church. Renan also did this entire interview in his car as he just became a DAD, so he was looking for somewhere a bit more quiet lol. Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Samantha Martin of Samantha Martin and Delta Sugar! With the worldwide pandemic wrecking utter havoc upon the careers of many musicians, Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar elected to use their time off the road to record, mix and master their latest tour-de-force, the astonishingly powerful, funky and deeply soulful The Reckless One.The follow up to 2018’s Juno-nominated Run To Me, The Reckless One represents another massive step forward for Samantha Martin as a songwriter, singer, arranger and band leader. Eleven of the album’s twelve songs were either co-written or solely composed by the multi-talented, multi-faceted artist. The one non-original, a funk infused cover of Bob Dylan’s “Meet Me in the Morning,” fuses Dylan’s lyric in a cataclysmic clash with the sensibilities of the Meters and the hurricane force of Howlin’ Wolf and Tina Turner at their rawest. It simply has to be heard to be believed.Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar,All That I Am,The Reckless OneSamantha Martin & Delta Sugar,Don't Have to Be,The Reckless Onemakingascene,Samantha Martin,Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar,I've Got a Feeling,The Reckless OneSamantha Martin & Delta Sugar,Loving You Is Easy,The Reckless One

And Sometimes ... Why? with Rob Szabo

Samantha Martin is a Juno-nominated songwriter and singer with a voice of unmistakable texture and power. We talk about her new album with her band Delta Sugar "The Reckless One" and the trials and tribulations that informed the songs including a grueling few years of touring that put an immense amount of stress on her and caused her to “almost mentally breakdown”. She gives advice on making tours work financially, the upsides of European touring including trying local cuisine like Swedish horse sausage and how chasing the live music high is like an addiction."It’s not the other 23 hours in the day, it’s that one hour on stage. It’s powerful, it’s moving, it fills my soul. Connecting with an audience is magical. Live music is magical. I think it’s also an addiction if I’m gonna be completely honest. Because it’s a high. You just chase it ’til you either get that high again or you surpass it. The first time I played a festival we were the ‘tweener. It was so exciting and my Dad’s right down in front of me and he’s crying tears of proud joy. He’s like “Sam, you did it, you made it”. Because of that then I pushed myself ‘I need to do that again’, but instead of being a ‘tweener, I want to be the band. So then I get that. So the next thing I wanna do is I want to tour. Then you do the tour. It just keeps snowballing. I’ve done a lot in the last 15 years but you know what I haven’t done? I haven’t played on a stadium stage. I’d like to do that one day. I’ve never played Letterman or SNL or whatever. I’d love to do that. I’ve never done the Super Bowl … “--- SUPPORT THIS PODCAST: https://bit.ly/aswKO-FI--- SAMANTHA MARTIN WEB https://samanthamartinmusic.com IG https://www.instagram.com/rootsnroll SPOT http://spoti.fi/2NWQz7p--- AND SOMETIMES ... Samantha Martin on songwriting, performing & more, and then Rob Cyrynowski on his unique & COVID-safe concert format First up, Mike has a lovely conversation with Samantha Martin (5:20) about her pandemic experience and making her latest, barn-storming record with her band, Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar. The new album, The Reckless One, was released in November via Gypsy Soul Records, and features swirling Booker T-inspired organ, a swaggering horn line and Samantha’s trademark hurricane-force vocals. With Mike, Samantha chats about their decision to focus on the European touring market prior the pandemic, the cost of touring the U.S., songwriting, singing in the studio versus on stage, what it was like to perform a livestreamed concert from a nearly-empty theatre, and more. After that, Mike chats with Rob Cyrynowski (42:20) about his unique COVID-safe concert series called Hotels Live. Rob is a veteran Canadian talent buyer, booker, and promoter who’s worked with such acts as Kiss, Def Leppard, Rush, Thomas Rhett, Rihanna, Pitbull, Tiësto, Bryan Adams, and The Tragically Hip. Calgary-based Hotels Live Canada has been offering some of the most fun, COVID-safe concert experiences throughout the summer and fall and will continue to do so in 2021. At these shows, fans are watching DJs and bands from the comfort and safety of their hotel room balconies. So far in 2020, Hotels Lives has organized 15 safe live concerts with 48 artists. For those shows, more than 1,350 hotel rooms were sold, with over 5,000 fans attending shows, and ticket sales grossed over $350,000, far exceeding what most concert promoters have been able to do in Canada this year. And importantly, there’s been zero COVID-19 cases traced to the shows. So, Rob discusses how this concert concept came to be, the lessons learned so far, and what 2021 holds.

Ready, set, listen! In this episode I chat with my new friend, Samantha Martin, who runs an ethical active wear company in Nashville. Agathos Athleisure is a ballin' company that is all about doing good for people and for the planet. To see the full show notes, look below in the shows description or pop over to my website at https://theheartfelthippie.wordpress.com/ Samantha Martin was climbing the corporate ladder when she realized that she had little passion for what she was doing. Her eyes were opened to the fact that the business world she was in was all about making money and keeping it all to yourself. Samantha so bravely decided to step away from this much-practiced business model and start her own company that was a lot more meaningful. In 2016, Samantha started Agathos Athleisure – my new favorite place to get the world's cutest yoga pants. Agathos is an ethical active wear company that carries brands who make their clothing consciously. The shop sells clothing from a variety of places around the world, including the good ol' U.S. of A., and only sells brands that are eco-friendly, paying their employees fair wages, and/or are philanthropic. You haven't even seen the clothes yet and you already want to buy them, don't you?! In this conversation Samantha and I talk all about what it was like to start her own business and be a female in a male-dominant world. Samantha has lots of encouraging words to share with those of us who have a like-minded, entrepreneurial spirit. I swear, I need to have a recording of Samantha pumping me up that I can play when I wake up to in the morning! We also talk about all things ethical clothing production. We cover what exactly it means for clothing to be consciously and ethically sourced, earth friendly, fair trade, and all the good things. This is the perfect introductory conversation into topics that matter to our planet A LOT right now. Samantha does an excellent job putting these big terms into understandable comparisons and explaining what we should be looking for in the brands we purchase from. When we purchase things, we send a message about what we believe in and what we value. And I'm tellin' ya, Samantha's words will make you rethink a lot of those habitual purchases! I love hearing Samantha's heart for why she started her business, what she looks for in her brands, and all the ways she's continuing to dream even after opening Agathos just a few short years ago! I know you're going to be a huge fan of Samantha and, don't worry, I already told her I want her to come back someday! I hope you feel enlightened on the topic of ethical clothing and ready to make some simple changes in your own life. Keep learning, you've got this. Regina Bonelli comes to The Couch from Kool Breeze who suggested I check out the music from this Brooklyn, NY native.  Her debut album is entitled Open Up The Door and the original songs all tell the story of this woman's journey to becoming the "reigning queen of NYC Blues" as she was dubbed by Big City Rhythm & Blues Magazine.   Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar released their full-length album, The Nightingale, back in February and it has caught the attention of many a Blues, Soul and Gospel fan since then.  Out of Canada, Martin's skill on acoustic and resonator guitars are evident throughout and the vocals of Delta Sugar add another level to the band's sound.  I'll speak with Samantha about her life and music. Couch Kid Deb Ryder returns to talk about her new release Let It Rain.  The album is loaded with stellar musicians contributing to the sound that is unique to this fine vocalist.  All 11 songs are originals and they prove that Deb's skills as a songwriter continue to grow as she does.
