When I heard that my friend and mentor and UMFM mainstay for many years, John Prentice, was hoping to do his great show, Planet Mainstage, remotely this year, I knew I had to jump in and help out. John has been a part of the folk & roots music community longer than I've been alive, and certainly all of the time that I've been with UMFM, so it was an honour and a pleasure to be his board operator and help solicit some donations for UMFM's annual Pledge-O-Rama! Unlike commercial stations and other big community stations, we do not get paid to host our shows, so it truly is a labour of love. We also have no idea who is listening to our shows, so it's a real boost when we get opportunities like this, where we hear directly from listeners who appreciate what we do. I make my donation as a thanks to John's show every year, and I hope that many of you will do the same. Today, John played parts of some of his great interviews with the likes of Peter Yarrow, Stephen Fearing, Sam Baardman, and more. A special podcast exclusive deep dive into the recording career of Stephen Fearing! There's a power outage at the radio station this weekend, so no new episode will air on UMFM, however, I had some special plans this week because there are some exciting shows coming up, so I thought I'd put together some exclusive podcast episodes. Seeing Stephen Fearing at my first folk festival in 1993 was a monumental moment for me. I remember being blown away and amazed that I'd never seen him or even heard of him before. I realized that there was a world of great music that I had been missing out on, and it set me off on a path of musical discovery that continues to this day. I also vowed to some day be able to help others discover music like his, and eventually that vehicle became Tell the Band to Go Home. Stephen has been one of the most played artists on the show since the beginning, and I've been attending his shows ever since that first festival. On this special episode, we hear selections from throughout Stephen's solo career, as well as some covers, live performances, and collaborations, including his longstanding supergroup Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. Two guests on the Mulligan Stew Podcast Both great pals. Stephen fearing is a key member of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. Like all three members Front Line Members, they each have their own solo careers. That's one of the outstanding elements of their relationship. Freedom to create together or solo. Stephen Fearing has just released his newest album, The Empathist. Co-Produced in East Nashville with Ken Crooker (Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, Al Green, EmmyLou Harris, Steve Earle) Stephen is a truly talented songwriter, but he also carries with him, his Irish storytelling skills. The songs on The Empathist beautifully weave those skills together. Highly Recommended. Bill Henderson is the leader of Chilliwack. For some 30 years, they've been crafting hits and touring The World. As lead singer, songwriter and guitarist,t Bill has been inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock Hall of Fame and made a member of the Order of Canada. In 2025, the band is on its last tour - Farewell to Friends!! https://www.gonegonegone.com/wp-content/uploads/Farewell-Tour-Dates_Chilliwack-Site-1-7.docx https://www.stephenfearing.ca/tour Enjoy - Happy St Patrick's Day
Being the closest Saturday to St. Patrick's Day this show was a celebration of Celtic music, with a lot of my favourite Irish artists to the fore. The new CD by Stephen Fearing was released yesterday, so this was a CiTR exclusive. Another exclusive at the end was a track recorded at The Rogue with Co. Clare fiddler Martin Hayes and the late Chicago guitarist Dennis Cahill in 2017. These tunes were never recorded by the duo on any of their albums.
He was born in Canada and raised in Dublin and some of his friends eventually became members of the band U2. Stephen Fearing is coming to Fredericton for a show in February.
Concert and festival previews, new releases, and a celebration of music from all around the world. It's the essence of what I've been presenting on this show for the past 39 years! This weekend there are concerts with Stephen Fearing and Deanna Knight, and next month Teddy Thompson makes his Rogue Folk debut. July sees the return of Scots favourites Shooglenifty on the eve of the Vancouver Folk Music Festival. Who says Vancouver is "No Fun City"?
Celebrating the new CD by Deanna Knight, paying tribute once again to the late Ron Kavana, previewing next week's shows with Cassie & Maggie and Stephen Fearing, and assembling some amazing new music from all over. In the words of the John Martyn song, "May you never lay your head down without a hand to hold", this was a show full of music for holding hands, and sharing memories and wonder.

Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. The name alone gets your attention. I mean, they all wear black suits. So, you may ask, which one is Blackie. They are all Blackie. Stephen Fearing, has a fine solo career with a seriously growing fan base, outstanding critical reviews and he's a Blackie. Tom Wilson is a multi-talented singer, songwriter, artist, and author. A bear of a human, a Mohawk soul, and a good man. Colin Linden is a music lifer. He's doing what his head and heart told him to do. Starting when he was perhaps 8. Colin left Canada fully formed and famous, for Nashville and set up his studio. He's been making music ever since. Solo career, writing, creating, and producing Blackie music. Produced Keb' Mo's Grammy album. Toured as part of Bob Dylan's band. So Blackie is Stephen, Tom, OK I am loading now, and Colin. Together, in spirit, in spirituality, and bound by 12 notes and the truth. New album is O Glory; Lost those blues again (Stephen spent a great deal of time teaching n the Maritimes this Summer. Was not available for our Zoom interview) The zoom video can be seen and heard on our terrydavidmulligan YouTube Channel www.blackieandtherodeokings.com colinlinden.com stephenfearing.com tomwilsononline.com

They're one of the greatest musical trios this country has ever produced. Tom Wilson, Stephen Fearing, and Colin Linden - aka Blackie and the Rodeo Kings - join us on today's show. Mike had the pleasure of sitting down with the guys in those glorious days before physical distancing became the new normal. In 2020, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings are celebrating their 25th year together, so of course we discuss that longevity and the unique chemistry they share, as well as the making of their new album, King of This Town. Tom also discusses the incredible personal journey he’s been on over the last seven years, and Colin and Stephen ponder it from their unique vantage point. http://canadianmusician.com This episode is sponsored by Bandzoogle. Although they each have successful solo careers Colin Linden, Tom Wilson, and road warrior Stephen Fearing together are Blackie and The Rodeo Kings. In 2020 the boys celebrate being together and making music for 25 years. How did they kick off 2020? Jan 4 they played The Ryman Theatre, home of The Grand Ol’ Opry. Stephen Fearing packed his bags and went touring his solo album The Unconquerable Past! Colin won a Grammy for Keb Mo’s Oklahoma, which Colin co-produced in his home studio in Nashville. Just days ago Tom Wilson gets a Juno nomination for Lee Harvey Osmond. And Blackie releases King of this Town . The coming tour may take the entire year! What started off in 1996 as a one off tribute album in celebration of the music of Willie P Bennett has evolved into 25 years of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. Quite simply one of Canada’s finest bands. Ever!! Enjoy the stories!

Stephen Fearing hits the road in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario this spring. Hot on the heels of a great response to his ninth solo album, 2017’s “Every Soul’s A Sailor”, which took home the Canadian Folk Music Award for Contemporary Singer of the Year, his solo career is still going strong – alongside his very busy ‘other job’ as one of the leaders of Canadian supergroup Blackie & The Rodeo Kings. We caught up with Stephen on the road in Saskatchewan to chat about this tour, his long career (his first recording, a cassette entitled “The Yellow Tape” came out in 1986) and latest solo album. Perhaps best known as a founding member of Blackie and The Rodeo Kings, multi-JUNO winner Stephen Fearing will release his ninth studio album, Every Soul's a Sailor, on January 10th. From the anti-Trump anthem "Blowhard Nation" to the haunting and ethereal "Gone but Not Forgotten" featuring Rose Cousins, these songs span a range of styles from folk to pop to boot-stomping roots. Mike will speak with him about finding a new sound thanks to some old friends, the reception of his first protest song in years, and more. Plus, we've got some intersting stats and figures about music sales in2016 from Nielsen Music Canada. Hear about Drake's golden year, how catalog music sales surpassed new music sales for the first time, and a lot more.
Includes debut of Stephen Fearing's commentary on the US election: Blowhard nation; mini-features on Connie Kaldor and Manx Celtic trio Barrule; some Belgian and Swiss music; a live track from Tri Continental's Rogue concert last weekend, and some new releases. And more.
Bernie Finkelstein is my guest on the show this week. It's a natural companion piece to last weeks' interview with Bruce Cockburn. If you haven't heard that one (Episode 19), please check it out as well! Bernie has been in the biz for decades, originally starting out as a helper and manager for folk artists and rock bands around Toronto's buzzing scene in the mid/late 60's. His early success in the US with The Paupers and working with the legendary Albert Grossman (Bob Dylan's manager) led him back to Toronto to start his own label, True North Records. He made his mark early signing Bruce Cockburn, a relationship that continues to this day. His other successes have included clients like Murray McLauchlan, Dan Hill, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Stephen Fearing, and he even signed a little weirdo instrumental band from Vancouver called Zubot and Dawson. Bernie has great stories from all of those eras and tells them in his recent book "True North", but it's more fun to hear him tell them in person, so Bernie was nice enough to spend some time with me for the show. Enjoy my conversation with Bernie Finkelstein!
Back from a trip to the U.K. (thanks to Andrea & Arthur Berman for filling in last week) this week's show featured Stephen Fearing returning to as well, plus new releases by Afro Celt Sound System, Youssou N'Dour, and more

Blackie’s back! Whenever Blackie & the Rodeo Kings roll through town, it’s cause for celebration, so much of today’s show is dedicated to that glorious occasion, including a chat with our old friend Stephen Fearing. That’s not the end of the special celebrations, as another old friend, James Murdoch, returns to town with Jay Sparrow, when Murdoch & Sparrow play Sunset Saloon this week. We chat with James and hear some of their great songs. And, as if that weren’t enough, we’ve got some exciting new releases.

It’s our 400th episode, and that seems like a milestone worthy of a bit of a look back at what we’ve accomplished (and screwed up) over the course of 9 years and more than 800 hours on air. We took a trip back to episode #1 and covered a lot of the great memories that have happened along the way.

T-Bar’s in to take us on a trip to visit the Brown family (Greg, Iris, & the kids), as well as to spin some of his sappy selections. Mudge has the new music and the concert rumours covered.

It’s Juno weekend in the centre of the universe, so we call up our pal, first-time nominee Del Barber for some inside dirt. We take a look at some great upcoming shows and spin some rockin’ requests.

Today, it’s our Blue & True Valentine’s Day special! We start off in Blue Valentines mode, as we celebrate the great musical legacy of the late, great Willie P. Bennett, who left this world on Feb. 15, 2008. We sure do miss him, but luckily he left behind some amazing music. Sadly, his music is not available for purchase or download ANYWHERE, which is absolutely criminal, so it’s more important than ever that we keep his music on the radio. For our second hour, it’s some of what you might expect a sappy singer/songwriter show to do on Valentine’s Day Eve (as well as a few oddball selections, right Ron?). We delve into the huge category of Love Songs, and pull out some gems.

We're pre-recorded this week, as all good-hearted local music lovers are at the Winnipeg Folk Festival! As you may know, going to the Winnipeg Folk Festival for the first time in 1993 changed my life forever, and directly led to me hosting this show today. Over the past 18 years, I have had so many amazing experiences at the Winnipeg festival (and others across the country), and this week I take a look back at some of the music and moments that stand out most for me. I've seen and heard some incredible things at those festivals, and I'm very excited to share some of those with you on today's show!

This episode might make you a bit dizzy with all of the looking back and forward, but it's worth the whiplash. We looked back at Stephen Fearing's great show, Jeff Healey's great career, and at one of the greatest Canadian bands of all, The Lowest of the Low. We also looked forward to some new/upcoming releases from some old favourites. Lastly, we looked forward to Monday's Steve Earle/Allison Moorer concert by looking ahead at Allison's great new album, which looks back on some old classics, and we looked back at some of the great work Steve Earle has done with others.

Music Month in Manitoba continues with one of the most solid weeks of shows we've seen in a very long time. It kicks off this afternoon with Hayes Carll playing live at Candor. Can't miss that one, so this show is pre-recorded. Hayes takes the stage again tonight opening for Corb Lund. Then, Brock Zeman & Dan Walsh are back, a stellar Townes Van Zandt tribute show on Friday, then Saturday, it's Stephen Fearing & Oh Susanna for goodness sake! How could we possibly think of anything but shows on a week like that?

A show I wish I never had to do. Yesterday, one of the true guiding lights of this show went out, as Canada's greatest songwriter of all time, Willie P Bennett died. His songs and spirit will live on forever, but it's sad to think that we'll never see him or hear from him again. In memory of him, two hours of memories and music from the man, including Willie originals, Willie covers, a song about Willie, songs featuring Willie, and Willie live. We heard from friends like Stephen Fearing, Scott Nolan, Colin Linden, and Willie's longtime boss, bandmate, and friend, Fred Eaglesmith. Rest in peace, great one.
