You probably know Gary Louris as the leader of The Jayhawks – or as they refer to themselves, “a band from Minnesota.” The Jayhawks are pioneers of roots rock, alt-country, and Americana. Whatever you wanna call it, they've been making records where rock, pop, country, and other forms of American roots music overlap since the mid-1980s.But Louris's hidden superpower is that he's kind of like a musical Swiss Army knife – he's basically got a creative skill for any application. Want him and his band to serve as accompanists for some of the most distinctive singer-songwriters, like Wesley Stage and Joe Henry? He can do that. Looking for achingly-perfect, near-fraternal harmonies on hit songs like Counting Crows' “Mr. Jones”? He can (and did) do that. If you're the Tedeschi Trucks Band or The Chicks and you're looking for someone to write you some catchy, melodic, roots-pop songs? Gary's your guy. If that's not enough, he has also produced records for artists like Dar Williams, The Sadies, and The Jayhawks, too. Whatever your musical need may be, chances are that Gary Louris can do it.In between all these varied musical roles, Louris has also found time to release several solo albums, the newest of which – 'Dark Country' – was released earlier this month. He recorded it mostly solo in his home studio and the word on the street is that this collection of songs, inspired by his wife, is his most intimate and romantic album yet. I've been a big fan of Gary Louris for basically my entire adult life and enjoyed our wide-ranging Basic Folk conversation, touching on the way technical limitations can shape an artist's style, what he's learned from a career's-worth of collaborations, his process working on his new solo album, the relationship between versatility and longevity, and what the influence of romance on his songwriting looks like now, in the fifth decade of his music career.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Interested in sponsoring us? Pianist creates creative explorations There are plenty of jazz pianists around the country who don't take kindly to anyone talking during their performances. That's not the case for Daniel Kelly. On Saturday (Jan. 18), the Cold Spring resident will create a musical composition with children, on the spot, at the Butterfield Library - much like the classic story "Stone Soup," he says, but with melody, harmony and rhythm. "We'll have a drumbeat and a piano part, but I can play almost any instrument on my electronic keyboard, so there are endless variations," he says. "We will have an interesting song by the end." Last year, Kelly booked a series of monthly programs for adults at the library called Creative Explorations with Daniel Kelly & Friends. So far, he has held four sessions and will continue through June, then start again in the fall. These events are conversations, not concerts. "We're trying to get people actively involved in the creative process, but it's OK just to enjoy and absorb," he says. Vanessa Maldonado, the library's adult program coordinator, says, "This is less like a show and more like hanging out with your friends. Like with Mr. Rogers, having guests facilitates interaction. This is a great way to learn from local artists who share their talents and inspire others to say, 'I have talent, too.'" Last October, author and musician David Hollander joined Kelly to examine the connection between music and writing. After speaking about the rhythm of words in his sentences, Hollander and Kelly improvised on piano and guitar as audience members wrote poems or prose. People willing to read their work came onstage. Kelly also hosted singer-songwriter Dar Williams, exploring her creative process, playing some of her music and beginning to write a song with the audience. On Wednesday (Jan. 15), Kelly and Beacon-based singer Tara O'Grady turned stories from people's dreams into tunes on the fly. "Tara is lightning-quick writing solid lyrics," says Kelly. "There's so much local talent to draw from. It's astounding." Kelly moved to Cold Spring in 2013 and tours the world playing music, including a stint as a cultural ambassador for the U.S. State Department. In addition to implementing conceptual programs that blurred the line between art and community in Florida, Memphis and Wyoming, he books the acts at the annual Jazz at the Lake festival in Lake George. Kelly, who seeks to mash up art forms and find new creative approaches, forged a project, Shakespeare in Jazz: All the World's a Song, consisting of original tunes composed around short snippets of the Bard's most renowned lines. The goal, he says, is to view the language's nuance and meaning with a new sensibility. Indeed, the creative exploration on Feb. 12 will be Shakespeare and Music. Actor Sean McNall from Hudson Valley Shakespeare will perform monologues as Kelly improvises. Kelly's daughter, Sofia, 16, will sing and invite the audience to join in. In March, Kelly will jazz things up behind artist Ireena Gurvich as she creates a visual work. Art supplies will be provided, and attendees can create while Kelly tinkers at the keys. "It's such an amazing, engaging idea," says Maldonado. "You're not just sitting there listening passively - you're collaborating and helping to build a community connection around the arts." The Butterfield Library is located at 10 Morris Ave. in Cold Spring. Musical Stories for Kids with Daniel Kelly, which begins at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 18, is recommended for children ages 4 to 8.

An impassioned account of the fall and rise of the small American towns she cherishes by Dar Williams.   A musician, educator, author, Dar rose out of the vibrant mid-90's Boston scene, inspired by the eclectic influences of alt-rockers, Berklee jazz musicians, slam poets, and folk artists, After a year of touring non-stop with her first album, The Honesty Room, in 1994, she was invited by Joan Baez to tour in Europe and The United States. To date she has written 14 albums and 6 books. And we wanted two speak with Dar about one of those books. “What I Found in a Thousand Towns” A Traveling Musician's Guide to Rebuilding America's Communities—One Coffee Shop, Dog Run, and Open-Mike Night at a Time(published in 2017). A beloved folk singer presents an impassioned account of the fall and rise of the small American towns she cherishes. Dubbed by the New Yorker as “one of America's very best singer-songwriters,” Dar Williams has made her career not in stadiums, but touring America's small towns. She has played their venues, composed in their coffee shops, and drunk in their bars. She has seen these communities struggle, but also seen them thrive in the face of postindustrial identity crises. Here, Williams muses on why some towns flourish while others fail, examining elements from the significance of history and nature to the uniting power of public spaces and food. Drawing on her own travels and the work of urban theorists, Williams offers real solutions to rebuild declining communities. What I Found in a Thousand Towns is more than a love letter to America's small towns, it's a deeply personal and hopeful message about the potential of America's lively and resilient communities. Born of the stark beauty and bittersweet desolation of the high desert, California trio Heavy Gus blurs the lines between grungy garage band fare, hazy surf, and dreamy indie rock on their captivating full-length debut, Notions. Bristling with live-wire electricity, the collection is lean and spare, fueled by distorted guitars and a driving rhythm section, and the performances are loose and organic to match, captured spontaneously in the moment with little room for overthinking or second-guessing. While all three bandmates come to Heavy Gus from very different worlds—Ulvang from The Lumineers, drummer Ryan Dobrowski from Blind Pilot, and singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Dorota Szuta from an unlikely combination of marine science and music—they fit together like puzzle pieces here, bound by the kind of love and trust that can only grow from years of deep kinship. The result is a record all about distance and connection from a band built on intimacy and personal chemistry, a mesmerizing debut that calls to mind everything from Meat Puppets and The Breeders to Yo La Tengo and Acetone in its artful balance of hope and fatalism, loneliness and desire, strength and vulnerability. Originally hailing from the rugged shores of Lake Superior, Sasha Mercedes writes image-provoking songs and delivers them with passion and conviction. Her powerful voice turns heads, as she beats on her guitar, brow furrowed and snarling! Mercedes has released five Americana solo albums, and though there will always be a soft spot in her heart for singer-songwriter stylings, Mercedes hasn't been tethered to any genre. She was the front-woman for Twin Cities-based rock band, Hot Pink Hangover, as well as the hook writer and fellow performer in Minneapolis hip hop trio, Channeling Grey. She has traveled the world making music and drawing inspiration out of every experience, which is evident in the lyrics of her brilliantly crafted compositions. She has shared the stage with TLC, Badflower, Dar Williams, Don Mclean, Tracy Bonham, Guy Davis, Pete Seeger, and others. She may seem hard on the outside, but Mercedes has always believed that rugged shores can polish even the roughest of stones. Welcome to our annual digest of Michigan Women's Music & Arts Festivals! This Summer of 2023 was packed with gynocentric encounters, culture and music! First up, hear long-time WLRN member April Neault greet the listener with her announcement that she is stepping back from her monthly duties with WLRN after this edition and that we are looking for a new volunteer to work our YouTube channel and do some video editing. You'll also hear a special announcement from April about a women's speaking event happening in Ottowa, Ontario Canada on September 9th. For more info about that event, go to womensrightsmatter.ca. Next, Mary O'Neill delivers WLRN's World News segment that includes stories about gender ID laws in Norway and the ongoing crackdown on Iranian feminist activists. Next, enjoy "August Moon" by Nedra Johnson, a long-time Michigan performer and founder of Big Mouth Girl on the Land. After the world news, we take you on a journey to a rainy tent at MFR where Thistle and Emily interview a young detransitioned woman who attended Fest in Michigan for the first time this year. Enjoy the ambient sounds and a visit from a neighbor who walks over to chat about the big puddle of water under her tent after the rain! Also, enjoy Lou's beautiful and moving performance of "If I Wrote You" by Dar Williams during this interview segment. Following the interview, you'll hear Ferron's song "Misty Mountain" right before jumping into Jenna's commentary about her experiences at Fest this year and how women's spirituality and spiritual practices are essential to getting out of the bounds of patriarchy. After Jenna's two cents, the listener is treated to Thistle's commentary interwoven with clips of her performance of two of her original songs on the Land, an ukulele choir rehearsal, and a trip to the marketplace downtown in the women's village that springs up every year on the Land. Thank you so much, dear listeners, for tuning in to our woman-powered monthly show and for spreading it far and wide throughout the Femisphere. Join us next month for a digest of the Women's Declaration International - USA's Convention happening over the weekend of September 16th in San Francisco. The article points out, however, that the tides may shift if the House approved “Protect Working Musicians Act” is taken up by and passed by the Senate. While Greg remains dubious about the effectiveness of unions as a means of negotiation, he firmly supports having more money. Nick would like anyone who does agree that unions can be effective at negotiating better pay, to send their Senator a letter via this helpful website: https://actionnetwork.org/letters/support-the-protect-working-musicians-act Songs:Woods - “Strange to Explain”Woods - “The Void”

Finding poetry in the landscape is how Erin Spencer portrays her work as she connects with nature. Born in Northern California, the second of seven children, Erin moved to Maryland as a toddler. She showed an early interest in writing, dancing and archeology and would later study archeology and history at Brigham Young University in Utah. Her father, Boyd, was a chemistry professor, as well as a pianist and composer, and her mother Janine, a teacher who encouraged all her children to be creative. In her 20's, Erin spent 18 months in The Netherlands as a church missionary, where she took photographs, which provided her with the inspiration for her early paintings. After returning to the US, Erin married her husband, Peter, and in 2008 the couple moved to Rhode Island where they have raised three children. Faith and family are the most important aspects of Erin's life — she reads her scriptures daily and spends time each day at the easel. Her inspiration for her landscapes comes from California to New England via Europe and she captures her scenes in plein air or in the studio. “I think what's so exciting about the art, what I produce but also art that I get to see from others, not just paintings but anything that people create, it's an exciting thing to see.” Erin also spends time studying art and teaching workshops. Her paintings are included in private collections across the United States and around the world including Canada, Europe, Israel, Australia, and Japan. She says: “My personal process begins with observation and study of the natural world in all its splendid variation. Whether working from life or from sketches back in my studio, my paintings become translations of what I perceive. The beauty of this is that I will always have work to do, poems to create from my personal impressions of the world.”Erin's favorite female artists:Maria JosenhansMary TonkinLaura RiosBethann Moran-HandzlikSarah ManolescueJennifer MosesErin's playlist:“It varies. Sounds of Encouragement

Katie Dahl is a songwriter and playwright whose work is as expansive as Lake Michigan and as deeply rooted as its rocky coastal bluffs. A small-town celebrity on the Wisconsin peninsula where her family has lived for 175 years, she is now a radio-charting folk artist who tours around the world. Clear-eyed and tough-minded, fresh and funny, Katie “delivers razor-sharp lyrics with a hearty, soulful voice” (American Songwriter).Katie's four albums of original songs showcase her creamy alto and trademark wit, as well as her unflinching authenticity. Her recent work finds her exploring more vulnerable territory than ever before, from anxiety to body image to the challenges of growing up queer in an evangelical church. Richly steeped in the American songwriting tradition, Katie navigates the muddy waters between the personal, public, and political with tenderness and dexterity.Katie is currently working with renowned producer Julie Wolf on a new album slated for release in early 2023. Her previous album, Wildwood, was produced by JT Nero (Birds of Chicago) and features Allison Russell; that record's “Worry My Friend” hit #6 on the folk radio charts in 2019. Her song “Crowns” spent a month at #1 on the charts in 2015.Katie is also a playwright; her latest musical The Fisherman's Daughters (2021) tells the story of two sisters in 1908 who fight the state of Wisconsin's efforts to take their rural homestead via eminent domain to make a state park. Victory Farm (2012; co-written with James Valcq and Emilie Coulson) is a fictionalized account of the real-life German POWs who came to Wisconsin to pick cherries during World War II. Both plays were made into live cast recordings.Katie was a college freshman in Minnesota when she slipped on a patch of sidewalk ice and broke her wrist. Suddenly unable to play the oboe in her college orchestra, Katie used her newfound free time to learn guitar, teaching herself chord shapes as she strummed the strings with her stiff right hand. Nine years later, that icy day has proven to be a blessing in disguise, leading Katie into a life of work that Dar Williams calls “the very best kind of songwriting.”Don't forget to buy Katie's latest Album Seven Stones!https://katiedahlmusic.comTop 5 Songs of Encouragement1) "May I Suggest" by Susan Wernerhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eW1DDSQnEYo2) "Grow Your Flowers" by JT & the Cloudshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RntOMgWg7SM3) "Hammer and A Nail" by The Indigo Girlshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTI2GGNFR_U 4) "Nobody's Crying" by Patty Griffinhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGlNEbFuN9g5) "Sacristy" by Katie Dahlhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8o19TND2yIPhoto Credits: Wolfskull Creative & Kelly NicolaisenSupport the show

She may seem hard on the outside but Mercedes has always believed that rugged shores can polish even the roughest of stones.   First broadcast in 1994, Tent Show Radio is a weekly one-hour radio program showcasing the best live recordings from acclaimed music acts and entertainers who grace the Big Top Chautauqua stage each summer in beautiful Bayfield, WI. In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, I sit down to talk with Maggie Mae. Maggie is one of the singer/songwriters that we saw perform at the Philadelphia Folk Festival back in August. She is a soulful singer-songwriter based in Philadelphia who fronts an exciting and energetic Folk/Funk group under the same name. She pulls inspiration from the music she grew up on and the strong musical foundation her family built, along with the ever-evolving world of music around her to carve out a sound all her own. Combining genuine, heartfelt lyrics with catchy, cutting guitar riffs, her songs can either touch your soul or make you want to get up and dance.  She has been described as “poppy, polished, talented, & promising,” by XPN's The Key's John Vettese. Originally hailing from Northern New Jersey, Maggie has always had music in her life. Her parents met in college and formed a bluegrass band called 'The Wild Oats,' and later performed throughout New Jersey with various traditional Irish bands. Her father instilled a love for 'all things string' from a very young age, and her mother always encouraged her to write and sing. With a Steinway Grand piano in her living room, and fiddles, penny whistles, hand drums, dulcimers, harps, mandolins, banjos, and guitars littered throughout her childhood home, Maggie has managed to pick up and write with just about any stringed instrument she can find. Growing up, she was always attending folk & bluegrass festivals, making sure she was up front for favorites like Martin Sexton, Dar Williams, Vance Gilbert, and Railroad Earth. Rock and Blues legends including Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Allman Brothers, and Bonnie Raitt were always on heavy rotation in her house. During her time attaining an Associate's Degree in Music Performance, Maggie cultivated a love and appreciation for classical, jazz, funk, world, and jam music, and deepened her knowledge of jazz and bluegrass standards. She also fell deeply in love with one-man-band greats Michael Hedges and Keller Williams, leading her to discover and navigate the world of percussive guitar and loop pedals and effects. She puts all of this together to inspire, and continuously develop, the sound she creates today. Maggie has managed to round up a talented, ever-rotating cast of characters to support her over the years, featuring some of Philly's most talented musicians. No matter which lineup is sharing the stage with her, the band always brings an impressively varied set of skills and an undeniable energy to the stage. Maggie Mae has shared bills with both local and national acts including Soulive, The Heavy Pets, Dawg Yawp, Lohai, Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats, the Ladles, and more at many of Philly and New Jersey's premiere music venues. Maggie Mae released her debut single "Can You Hear Me Now?" featuring Jake Leschinsky of Philadelphia's favorite funk band, Swift Technique, on bass in November of 2018. The band made their debut appearance at World Cafe Live on December 20th, 2018 with friends Taylor Kelly & Erik Kramer filling the bill in celebration. You can listen to "CYHMN" on Spotify and iTunes.  At the end of 2019, Maggie won a contest to open for Soulive at the Ardmore Music Hall, where they made their debut as a 10-piece band. December marked the beginning of creating their debut album, recording the first single off the album, 'Hometown,' at Rittenhouse Soundworks with Michael Cumming engineering and Robby Webb producing. 'Hometown' is available everywhere. Maggie is currently in the studio recording her next LP, which is scheduled to release in early 2023. During that time, as well as working on numerous albums and tours with Jackson, he has recorded and performed live with many different artists, among them: Marshall Crenshaw, Natalie Merchant, Jon Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Joan Baez, Ian Hunter, Freedy Johnston, They Might Be Giants, Henry Lee Summer, the Silos, Graham Parker, Darden Smith, Dar Williams, Garland Jeffreys, Joy Askew, and Regina Spektor. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/brian-doherty8/support

Dar Williams has been described by The New Yorker as “one of America's very best singer-songwriters,” but to thirteen-year-old Tamar she was, quite simply, a personal hero: a songwriter whose poetry, poignancy, and humor could capture at once the authentic voices of an inner child, a searching young adult, and a wizened sage. We met in person in 2013 at Dar's songwriting retreat, and our friendship has been evolving ever since, exploring together the rigors of writing and storytelling through sound and song, and what it means to dip in and out of a creative space as a way of simply getting through the day. Dar has recently published a book about songwriting that is chock full of philosophical wisdom and applicable nuggets, many of which borne from a decade of retreats. We sat down together to talk about songwriting, art museums, the art of writing songs about art, and specifically her evocative, ambivalent "Mark Rothko Song," which tackles it all head-on. After a hectic week with non-stop breaking news, I think we all deserve a break from the politics. So after a brief recap of the latest news, we'll officially begin the weekend with something special. A singer/songwriter who I truly admire has a new book out, "How to Write a Song that Matters". I first met Dar Williams some 27 years ago. Her first album, "The Honesty Room" includes a song that listeners of the LA station where I worked truly connected with called "When I Was a Boy." We started playing it on KSCA fm 101.9 ...and the rest, as they say, is history. I've remained a fan through the years, but never had the opportunity to re-connect with Dar, until now. Her brand new book is out, called "How to Write a Song that Matters." She knows how to do that, and now shares that skill with the public in songwriting retreats, workshops and now, with this book. We have a lot of catching up to do, and I'm excited that listeners are along for the ride today. When the interview we recorded earlier this week ends, perhaps I could be persuaded to run into overtime and share the show we talk about during the interview. It was a morning show remote broadcast from Starbucks in Encino, CA, where she and Joan Baez (who were touring together) graced us with an amazing performance... Happy Music Friday!

It's the first "real" episode of the Lilith Fair 40: Dar Williams, Meredith Brooks, Frente!, Suzanne Vega, and The Corrs inaugurate our chart, with help from the MCSL "listies" mixtape, greasy-haired sad boys, how to sing about a building collapse, incomplete subversion of the male gaze, and sibling bands to fall asleep to. All this, and Mark may have identified his overall #1 song -- in the first five minutes! Put on an extra layer of crystal deodorant, because we're on a journey here, people. Leslie Smith has shined as part of all the great folk locales, the Newport, Kerrville, and South By Southwest music festivals, and her songs have been done by many folk-greats, like Lucy Kaplansky and Dar Williams, although I think they are best out of Leslie's own mouth and guitar. Along the way to now she did a stint as part of a New York bluegrass band called Arabesque, but then she headed back to Pittsburgh, back to her center.
