As we enter this new decade, I thought it would be fun to talk to a few friends and reflect back on what life was like 10 years ago. In these conversations, you’ll hear guests speak about what God has done in their life, their dreams and goals, things they would have done differently, and things they’re most proud of. And, looking back always causes me to look forward, so we’ll also chat about dreams for the next ten years! My guest today is Derek Minor. Derek has earned the title of veteran in the game not only as a rapper but also as a producer and businessman. After a decade of making music, the award-winning artist has established himself as a leading voice of hope in the midst of darkness. Friends, Derek is a light and I so enjoyed our conversation today. In this episode, we chat about his last 10 years, starting his own record label, Reflection Music Group, his introduction to the white Evangelical church, and navigating the tightrope of being Black, Christian, and a Hip-Hop artist. He also shares transparently about his struggles in a predominantly white church during the shootings of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Philando Castile, and other Black men lost to police violence. I found it especially moving (or convicting?) when Derek says, “The version of unity that [the church] is asking for always involves the Black people being quiet about their pain and the white people getting to move on.” I am so grateful for Derek’s voice and the way he uses his platform so honestly; the world is better for it. To see some of Derek’s other ventures, check out Ownership is the New Black -- a movement promoting and supporting black ownership, shifting our consumer power to ownership power. Here's part 2 of our Last Dance series! This time, we were joined by Matt Ellis (@Matt_Ellis27) and Austin Newell to get their takes on the documentary. We also ran a little long, so we had to break this portion into 2 episodes, officially making this a 3 part series here on Sports Shenanigans. Is this the greatest trilogy of all time? Let us know! At the time of this recording, in 2019 alone, Reflection Music Group overall had put on 200 songs and had amassed 80 million streams, but this didn’t happen overnight. Doc shares some of the insights on how they launched (in 2009) and run Reflection Music Group, which has five artists. He explains the concept behind Amplify, which helps veteran artists continue to expand their platform through distribution and marketing, touching forty to fifty careers (including RMG light which is a selective paid for service). Doc explains why he says “I never saw myself as a businessman.” He shares some of the real lessons learned around business plans, budgeting, timeliness, etc.. As an example, for Redemption, they had a budget of only $500 to market.
Doc Watson and Trig kick off the interview and discuss how their relationship started. Further, Doc shares his transition from the military to music production, mixtape, events, selling tracks, radio, his migration to Christian Hip-Hop, joining forces with Derek Minor (formerly known as Pro) and the birth of Christlike Entertainment (now Reflection Music Group). Trig shares his journey in secular music, his healthy confrontation with members of the Cross Movement and the enduring relationships that introduced him to CHH.
Tony, an artist with Reflection Music Group and friend of the podcast joins us this week. He shares his testimony (0:03), how he started in music (0:38), and stories from his recent trip to Israel with Israel Collective (1:27). We discuss life growing up in “the hood,” learning the reputation of the Lord, applying the law to our life, and emerging from dark seasons in our faith.
