On Tuesday, President Trump unleashed an angry tirade in which he threatened to stop doling out food stamp payments until Democrats capitulate in the government shutdown. He seethed over “crooked Joe Biden” and made up stuff about food stamp fraud. Coming after a judge ordered payments to continue, Trump's threat seemed to suggest he's now directly defying the courts. But then White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt quickly clarified that Trump will obey the law, after all. Given that Trump intended his threat as a dominance display over Democrats, Leavitt undercut him, because she had no choice. We think this shows Trump's team knows they cannot be seen as breaking the law to deny food to the hungry. We talked to David Dayen, executive editor of The American Prospect, who has a good piece arguing that Trump has lost the shutdown. He demystifies the food stamp battle, explains why Trump's terrible standing on the economy has made him vulnerable in the standoff, and discusses how this all shows that Democrats need to get in the fight and engage. Socialist MAYOR Can't Afford Seattle But Wants $1B for Housing FIASCO

Only in Seattle - Real Estate Unplugged

Seattle's about to elect a straight-up socialist mayor who can't even afford to live in the city she wants to run – and gets $2,200 monthly from her parents at age 43. What could go wrong? We dive deep into Katie Wilson's housing plan that promises to solve Seattle's sky-high rents with the same progressive policies that created the crisis in the first place. She wants billion-dollar bonds, rent caps, and more red tape while record-low housing permits and fleeing businesses tell the real story. Meanwhile, small businesses get robbed 25 times and grocery stores shut down because crime pays better than commerce. Wilson's solution? Build more "social housing" (aka government-funded ghettos) and clamp down on "bad actor landlords" – because nothing says "affordable housing" like scaring away property investors. This is the same playbook that's sent people fleeing to Texas and Florida, yet Seattle voters are ready to double down. Are we witnessing the death of common sense in real time? Will this be the final nail in Seattle's coffin? Subscribe and grab the popcorn – this socialist experiment is going to provide podcast content for years.

The economic news is getting worse. Major companies are announcing mass layoffs, and it's dominating the headlines, including in the Rust Belt. Food stamps are about to expire for millions. And new info shows how Obamacare premiums will soar due to lapsing subsidies. That backdrop of bad news makes President Trump's tearing down of White House structures to build a gilded ballroom even more damaging. Indeed, new polling shows that the ballroom fiasco is now stirring a surprising public backlash. On top of that, commentators are noticing the disconnect between the ballroom optics and the darkening economic situation for millions, a dynamic that will only worsen. We talked to Elizabeth Pancotti, who tracks economic sentiment as managing director of the Groundwork Collaborative. We discuss what the economic news means, why the media should level with voters about Trump's out-of-touch displays, and how Democrats in key races are seizing the economic high ground. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson thinks he can fix a $1.2 billion deficit with... a yacht tax and charging social media companies 50 cents per user? As usual, when progressive policies create massive budget holes, the solution is always the same: tax the rich until they flee to Florida! Johnson's brilliant plan includes taxing Amazon (hello, Bellevue relocation), slapping fees on yacht owners, and even borrowing money to pay city worker salaries. What could go wrong? We break down Johnson's delusional "progressive revenue" scheme that critics say won't survive court challenges, plus his desperate moves like selling city land and merging office spaces. Meanwhile, businesses and billionaires are already packing their bags for Texas and Florida, taking their tax revenue with them.Is this the definition of insanity, or just another day in a blue city? How long before Chicago joins the growing list of bankrupt liberal strongholds? Let us know your thoughts below – and don't forget to subscribe for more government accountability content that exposes these taxpayer disasters!

In the wake of a humiliating 39-38 home loss to the winless New York Jets on October 26, the Cincinnati Bengals' defense convened a players-only meeting the following day, October 27, exposing deep frustrations within the unit. This gut-wrenching defeat—marked by over 500 yards allowed and a franchise-worst 39 points surrendered at Paycor Stadium—left the Bengals at 3-5, clinging to fading playoff hopes in the loaded AFC North.  Linebacker Demetrius Knight Jr., a vocal leader, confirmed the gathering was spearheaded by captains and veteran defenders, emphasizing accountability without coaches present. "It was about owning our mistakes and recommitting to the standard we set last year," Knight told reporters, highlighting a meltdown where Jets quarterback Justin Fields diced up the secondary for 312 passing yards and three touchdowns. Defensive coordinator Al Golden, addressing the media post-meeting, framed it as a "sense of urgency" moment: "These guys are pros—they know when to look in the mirror." This isn't isolated turmoil. Cincinnati's defense, once a Joe Burrow-enabling force, ranks 29th in points allowed (27.1 per game) and dead last in red-zone efficiency, plagued by injuries to stars like Sam Hubbard and inconsistent tackling. The meeting echoes past Bengals resets, like the 2022 sideline blowups that fueled a Super Bowl run, but with higher stakes now—facing a brutal schedule including the Steelers and Ravens. Fans on X buzzed with mixed reactions, from memes mocking the "Jets curse" to calls for Golden's job. Yet, optimism lingers: Lou Anarumo's scheme, if tweaked, could harness young talents like Knight and rookie Jowon Briggs. As Burrow slingshots the offense toward contention, the D must evolve from embarrassment to elite. This meeting? A spark, not a surrender. The Who Dey nation awaits proof. Seattle allows rampant crime and homelessness, then acts shocked when businesses flee and residents face food deserts. After clearing downtown encampments, Mayor Bruce Harrell just shuffled the problem to residential neighborhoods like Lake City, where Fred Meyer finally said "we're done" and closed shop. Now Seattle's brilliant solution? Government-run grocery stores and "multi-pronged approaches" – everything except actually dealing with the shoplifting, drug addiction, and safety issues that drove businesses away in the first place. We dive into how the city's whack-a-mole homeless sweeps moved encampments two blocks down the street, why less than 5% of homeless accept actual housing, and how this predictable disaster is hitting the very communities Seattle claims to protect most. Is anyone surprised that businesses won't stick around when customers can't safely shop and inventory walks out the door daily? What's next – taxpayer-funded security guards for government grocery stores? Hit subscribe if you're tired of watching cities create problems, ignore solutions, and then blame "big corporate" when reality hits.

We're seeing a confluence of events that suggest President Trump's corruption has crossed over to an ugly new place. Trump is destroying a White House building to create a ballroom for him and his rich friends. He's demanding that the Justice Department hand over $230 million in taxpayer funds to compensate him for “damages.” And Democrats from Senator Chris Murphy to Democratic House leader Hakeem Jeffries are going after all this in a newly aggressive way. Into this mess stepped White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who issued an extraordinary new defense of Trump's ballroom fiasco. It was absolutely laden with comically cultish devotion to the Audience of One, but the hagiography also revealed something darker. We talked to New Republic staff writer Matt Ford, author of a great new piece about Trump's self-dealing. He explains how all this corruption and all this worshipful propaganda reveals Trump's profound contempt for the rule of law, for DOJ independence, for the idea of the public good, and even for the American people. California spent $24 billion on homelessness in 5 years and can't account for where it went. Now we know why – LA developers just got busted for allegedly stealing millions meant for homeless housing to buy private jets, exotic cars, and a $46,000-per-month Beverly Hills mansion. Because nothing says "helping the homeless" like flipping a property from $11 million to $27.3 million in just 12 days using taxpayer money, right? We break down the fraudulent appraisals, pay-to-play donations to county supervisors, and how the homeless industrial complex has become a goldmine for grifters. Meanwhile, over 1,200 city-owned homeless housing units sit vacant after an $800 million buying spree. The numbers don't lie – this isn't about solving homelessness, it's about keeping the machine running while taxpayers foot the bill.Is anyone surprised that zero accountability led to maximum fraud? How long before these "nonprofit" executives get the same treatment as their developer buddies? Drop your thoughts below and don't forget to subscribe for more government waste exposés that'll make your head spin!

As the Chagos Islands deal returns to the Commons, the Standard's Chief Political Correspondent, Rachael Burford, joins us to explain how the influx of islanders from the remote archipelago has left Hillingdon council in crisis. The Chagos Islands have been the subject of a long-running legal dispute between the UK and Mauritius. This week's special report explains how in 2022, those born on Chagos and their children were offered full British citizenship, as a small gesture towards acknowledging historical wrongs. But with more families expected to arrive in the capital, the financial strain is forcing difficult choices. And in part two, The Standard's Chief Restaurant Critic and Going Out Editor David Ellis is here to reveal this week's Hidden London destination - the cigar merchant JJ Fox, which for more than 240 years has drawn the great and the good, from Winston Churchill to Oscar Wilde. Speaking to reporters Tuesday, President Donald Trump seemed unusually crazed and power-mad, even for him. He imperiously refused to take a question from an ABC reporter as punishment for an interview with JD Vance that went badly. He boasted about cutting only Democratic programs. He confirmed he supports heinous new restrictions on media coverage of the Pentagon. And he threatened to nix federal funds to New York if “communist” Zohran Mamdani is elected mayor. We think all this suggests Trump is newly emboldened. We talked to Brian Beutler, author of a new piece about the urgency of the moment on his excellent Substack, “Off Message.” He explains the futility of news organizations paying bribes to Trump, why conventional politics will not suffice, how the resistance must find a new kind of politics to meet the moment, and what the “No Kings” protests might accomplish toward this end.
