Tim Hite is the director of policy at Exodus and a former congressional staffer for Rep. Warren Davidson. He helped shape early self-custody legislation—including the Keep Your Coins Act (a playful nod to “KYC”)—and bridges law, technology, and individual rights. In this episode, Tim's discussion kicks off The Last Free Americans miniseries to share the origin story of self-custody protections on Capitol Hill, how “keep your coins” language differs from the Clarity Act's approach, and what meaningful safeguards against CBDCs could look like. We dig into the evolution of property rights in a digital world, why illicit-finance fears are often overstated, and how social media has changed the legislative battlefield.SUPPORT THE PODCAST:→ Subscribe→ Leave a review→ Share the show with your friends and family→ Send us an email: podcast@unchained.com→ Learn more about Unchained: https://unchained.com/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=podcast→ Book a free call with a bitcoin expert: https://unchained.com/consultation?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=podcastTIMESTAMPS:0:00 – Intro, disclaimers & why self-custody matters now0:51 – “The Last Free Americans”: series premise1:16 – Tim's path: 2017 bull run, law school, FINRA, and meeting Rep. Joe Kelly is the co-founder and CEO of Unchained. In this latest episode, Joe shares his story and Alaskan roots that shaped a deep respect for self-sufficiency—an experience he now applies to the digital frontier. In this episode, Joe joins The Bitcoin Frontier to share why Unchained is launching a new miniseries, The Last Free Americans, how self-custody became his life's work, and why the conservation movement offers a powerful analogy for protecting financial freedom. We dig into the frontier phases of new assets and ideas, the role of ETFs as a bridge (not the destination), and how policies like developer protections and “keep your coins” language can ring-fence essential rights.SUPPORT THE PODCAST: → Subscribe → Leave a review → Share the show with your friends and family → Send us an email: podcast@unchained.com → Learn more about Unchained: https://unchained.com/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=podcast → Book a free call with a bitcoin expert: https://unchained.com/consultation?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=podcastTIMESTAMPS:0:00 – Intro: The Last Free Americans and what's at stake with self-custody1:06 – Alaska, boats, and learning self-sufficiency2:54 – Conservation mindset: preserving wilderness and preserving peer-to-peer money4:03 – From accounts to keys: the “aha” of sending bitcoin yourself5:39 – Seeing the water we swim in: intermediaries, fees, and privacy tradeoffs8:03 – Frontiers and phases: from prospectors to politics—how new assets mature10:57 – Gold rush parallels: excess, scams, and integration into the mainstream12:55 – National parks as a model: ring-fencing what matters for future generations15:00 – “The last free Americans”: a proud warning about peer-to-peer rights17:02 – Building Unchained on bitcoin's assumptions, not fiat rails19:16 – ETFs as a useful bridge vs. living the peer-to-peer experience21:03 – Who are today's “John Muirs”? What is the future of Bitcoin wealth? This week on The Index, Alex Kehaya sits down with Joe Kelly, CEO of Unchained, to explore the rise of a Bitcoin-focused financial services company built on self-sovereignty.From pioneering Bitcoin-backed loans to securing over 100,000 BTC as a full-suite wealth management platform, Kelly shares how Unchained grew into a 140-person team while staying true to core Bitcoin values. At the heart of their model is collaborative custody. Unlike traditional custodians, Unchained's multi-signature approach gives clients two keys, while the company holds just one—allowing access to loans and IRAs without giving up control. After the collapse of FTX, this model gained serious traction as a safer, more aligned alternative.Kelly opens up about balancing Bitcoin ideals with business realities, building products that satisfy both regulators and sovereignty-minded clients. The conversation also dives into Unchained's Bitcoin IRA, which blends tax compliance with key control—something never before possible in retirement accounts. You'll also hear about Unchained's Legacy Project, which supports education, development, and philanthropy in the Bitcoin ecosystem. As ETFs and institutions move in, Unchained keeps its sights set on empowering individual holders to truly own their financial future.Learn more at https://www.unchained.com/Show LinksThe Index X ChannelYouTube

After a year that put digital assets back in the headlines, long-term Bitcoin adoption is quietly compounding beneath the noise. Unchained reports helping “many thousands” of clients secure roughly $12B in Bitcoin via collaborative custody, while on-chain “HODL waves” data shows that ~60% of all Bitcoin typically hasn't moved in a year or more, signaling growing conviction among holders. For family offices, entrepreneurs, and advisors navigating the alternative asset landscape, that combination of institutional-grade controls and patient capital is reshaping how Bitcoin is owned and used.So the big question becomes: If Bitcoin is maturing as a monetary asset, what does “responsible” Bitcoin finance actually look like—and who will build it?On this first episode of our four-part mini-series on the alternative asset market, Tuesdays with Morrisey host Adam Morrisey welcomes Joseph Kelly, Co-founder and CEO of Unchained, to explore Bitcoin's evolution from tech curiosity to durable balance-sheet asset. In this episode, they discuss the founding story of Unchained, cryptocurrency as an alternative asset class, and emerging practical applications of blockchain technology. Their conversation also covers the market cycles that shaped Unchained's strategy, why collaborative custody redefines the risk equation, and how real-world applications—like payments, lending, and estate planning—are being built on Bitcoin's unique foundation.Key takeaways from the episode…Amidst the noise of rises and falls, meme-coins and YOLO bets, it's an overlooked fact that roughly 60% of Bitcoin is held by people or businesses that have never sold more than 25% of their portfolio.Joe Kelly and his co-founders at Unchained saw an opportunity in 2016 to launch a financial services company to serve long-term holders of Bitcoin, growing to help thousands of clients secure over $12B of assets. The underlying technology of Bitcoin and Blockchain is strong. However, despite its promise, it is still relatively untested in terms of practical application and largely remains a store of value, considered by many to be an essential part of a balanced financial portfolio. The future for Bitcoin is unclear, but many believe it will rise to more commonplace relevance in an increasingly digital, interconnected and global world as massive investments in stablecoins and other applications take center stage. The episode also covers…Joseph's path from tech entrepreneur to Bitcoin builderLessons learned living aboard a sailboat with his familyFounding Unchained in 2016 and early challengesThe philosophy behind collaborative custodyWhy lending against Bitcoin matters for long-term holdersBuilding advisory, IRA, and inheritance planning toolsThe role of lightning, stablecoins, and emerging layer-2sWhy education and usability are key to mass adoptionTrust, reputation, and long-term positioning in financial servicesJoseph Kelly is the Co-founder and CEO of Unchained, a Bitcoin-focused financial services and technology firm known for collaborative custody. A second-time founder who previously built and exited an enterprise data company, Kelly blends technical rigor with conservative risk management. Under his leadership, Unchained has scaled to secure billions in client Bitcoin, offer dollar lending against BTC collateral, deliver IRA and advisory services, and launch a trust company for advanced estate needs.

Show notes provided by Joe PelusoAdaptations from one medium to another can be hit or miss. Some land, and some don't. Ken Kesey's novel "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" was not only a masterpiece of fiction, but when adapted to the big screen, garnered nine academy awards (Including, but not limited to, Best Picture, Best Director. Best Actor, Best Actress, and--no surprise--Best Adapted Screenplay). In our corner of the pop cultureuniverse, we fans have had many live action and animated features adapted from our favorite comics and stories for decades. But can an adaptation of Earth's Greatest Protector work in an animated film where he shows a side of himself rarely seen? Join your host, Keith, Joe, and returning guest Dylan (whosuggested this topic) as the guys critique Action Comics #775 "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, And The American Way" and the animated film it spawned "Superman VS.The Elite". The twin works by creatives Joe Kelly, Doug Mahnke, Lee Bermejo (the comic book), and Michael Chang (the film's director) are deeply dissected by the boys as they work their way through all the action, drama, story and animation style that made both these offerings stand out. But beyond all the bright colors and animated mayhem, there are nuanced themes of duty, violence, fallen friendships, and loss thatare all brought to bear resulting in introspection and an examination of the human condition. The hallmark of any good work of fiction. If you have never read the comic or seen the animated film, we think that after an hour of thoughtful discussion, you might give them both a look. Joe Kelly and I unpack a lot in this one on one at TerrificonPart 1: Back to Spider-Man—"Amazing Spider-Man" Relaunch & Multidimensional StakesKelly explains why relaunching Amazing Spider‑Man with a fresh #1 isn't a reset—it's the next natural chapter in Peter's journey He teases bold new arcs that pull from Peter's adolescence—pre‑high school—to recalibrate how we see him, emotionally and psychologically Kelly gets real about the dual storyline hitting in September 2025, where Spider‑Man splits across two frontiers: one grounded on Earth, the other traversing the cosmic reaches—frankly, “there are two Spider‑Men now,” he confirms Part 2: Animation Landmark—Man of Action & The Evolution of the MediumHe reflects on the early days of Man of Action Studios and the wild success of Ben 10: co-creating universally beloved characters and building stories that bridge generations.Kelly doesn't sugarcoat how different today's landscape is—from the golden age of cable to today's streaming-dominated, content-saturated ecosystem. He talks about how creative freedom has evolved, from strict network pitches to the flexibility—and fierce competition—of streaming platforms and short length content.
No fluff—just the roadmap. Marvel EIC C.B. Cebulski hosts a sharp Fall preview anchored by headline books. Jonathan Hickman lays out the architecture and character heartbeat of Ultimate Spider-Man—how this relaunch reframes Peter, the scale of the new Ultimate line, and what's next. Joe Kelly digs into Spider-Man—voice, velocity, and how to keep the wall-crawler surprising without losing the core. Charles Soule covers three fronts: the moral grind of Daredevil, the horror-thriller pulse of Carnage, and galaxy-shaping storytelling in Star Wars—why each book matters now and six months from now.Expect first-look pages, honest craft talk, and a candid Q&A. If you want where Marvel is headed this Fall and beyond, this is the map
