It doesn't matter what type of partnership you're in; you should ask relationship questions regularly to keep your lines of communication open and healthy. From business partnerships to personal connections, there will always be obstacles that you will need to conquer together. There is a reason you chose your person as a partner, but do you ever take the time to remember what that reason is? In this video conversation, Beth Hanishewski, the swiss-army knife of coaching, and David T. S. Wood share some powerful questions you should ask yourself and your partner. Beth and David are both experts in the field of relationship repair, and they aren't afraid to get real about the root of the issue. If you're ready to move your relationships to the next level and transform your partnerships for the better, this episode is a must-see! You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Transforming your relationship Figuring out where your relationship is on a scale of 10–0 Understanding what the rating you assigned to your relationship means Taking action today to work on getting your partnership to a 10 Remembering WHY you chose that person as a partner Two powerful questions you can ask to generate meaningful, open communication How to rate your relationship on a scale of 10–0 As a seasoned relationship expert, Beth always challenges her clients to take a moment to rate the relationship in question on a scale of 10–0. 10 means that your relationship couldn't get any better 0 means that it couldn't get any worse Take a moment to choose a number for your relationship before you read on. If you chose 10–9–8… You're happy, for the most part. You have some bad moments, but they don't have a lasting impact. You may experience a temporary loss of connection, intimacy, or in how you speak to each other. If you fight or argue, it doesn't even occur to you that you will leave the partnership. No REAL threats to the relationship. If you scored 7–6... You may find yourself saying, "I love them… BUT…". There is one big reason or "but" that you're struggling to move past. Most of your issues have been resolved, except that "but". If you rated your partnership a 5–4... You WANT better your situation. The relationship is threatened, and you're considering leaving. You may have been contemplating leaving for a while. There isn't just one issue, but several that you're concerned about. But if you rated your relationship a 3–2–1–0... This area is the most dangerous. You may have completely given up on your relationship already. You may not even care to put in the work to fix your situation. What can you do to start building your score? Both Beth and David agree that it's best to work on getting your relationship to a 10 before making any drastic decisions on your partnership. While you can start to do the work on your own, it's best to include your partner by inviting them to be part of your process. Calmly and respectfully open the conversation to see if there is something you can both agree to do for 30-days. If they don't agree, commit to making the change yourself. Chances are, your partner will see a drastic change in you, which could allow you to approach the subject again in the future. Remind yourself why you love that person, and why you chose them in the first place rather than focusing on the issue. Try to notice the little things you appreciate about them, instead of the things they do that bother you. Taking these steps to change your mindset will help you close the gap to reach that perfect 10. The two most important relationship questions you can ask Beth mentions two easy relationship questions that you can ask today to start generating a conversation with your partner. Even if you aren't sure where the issue is, this can gauge what areas your partner may see problems: What do I do that pushes you away? What do I do that pulls you closer? Did you notice the focus of these questions? These allow your partner to share some things that THEY need from YOU, rather than opening up the conversation with things YOU need from THEM. This gentle opening can make even the most apprehensive partners feel open to sharing with you. Plus, chances are, once they've answered your questions, they will probably ask the same of you! Whoever it is that you choose to do this work with, you chose them for a reason. Even if it's someone you decide to part with, David suggests that you should do your best to only say positive things about them to people you both know. If you're able to do this, you may be able to end your relationship on good terms and continue having a positive relationship with them for years to come. Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode: Michelle introduces Scott Carson. Scott takes us back about 10 years to when he was working for someone else in his J-O-B. Scott shares the story of how his boss wanted to pay him to train someone else to do what Scott was so good at - buying non-performing mortgages, but didn’t want to give the job to Scott himself. The boss turning Scott down, was just the slap in the face that Scott needed to set off on his own venture. For six months Scott spent time reading personal and professional development as well as putting his knowledge to the test. Scott explains what his company does and how it works. The biggest NO that Scott received was when he was trying to buy a portfolio with over 100 assets, and the investor he was working with walked away. (Scott shares the whole story in this episode). Scott turns each of his NO’s into a game. He tells himself that each NO is a not right now, but not a permanent NO. When looking for investors, Scott advises that you go for mid-size fish, not the whales. (Scott explains this analogy in this episode). When Scott was looking for the mid-sized fish, he had a method to how he chose who to reach out to - listen closely to find out more! “Seek counsel, and not advice.” ~ Scott Carson Scott knew that if he kept going and going and calling people he would eventually hear a YES. Only 48% of salespeople will reach out to a prospect more than once. The sale is all in the follow-up! Michelle and Scott talk about the movie Wall Street. A good piece of advice, when speaking with your prospect, ask them when a good time you should follow-up, and then do it! Scott is a firm believer in the personal touch - sending thank you cards and other small gifts. Scott shares his story of how during his second year in business, he hit a dry spell, and how he considered going back to his old job. Scott tells Michelle what he would advise his younger self. Known as the “Why Guy” and Canada’s Creative Coach, Gerry Visca exists to inspire people and their ideas to action. His current mission is to inspire One Million Whys, all around the world. As one of Canada's top Inspirational Speakers, a 16-time author and publisher of Defyeneurs, Gerry's on a mission to inspire a new ROI in the World – one where we all Reach Out & Inspire others. At the time of our conversation, Gerry has two new books just about to be released. One of them is called “Influence,” and it celebrates 11 autobiographies of Women Inspiring Change. The intention of the book is to inspire 11,000 people in the world to become someone of influence. The other, very near and dear to Gerry’s heart, is a novel called "Remembering Why.” As the first novel in his 16-book repertoire, the intention of “Remembering Why” is to take the reader on a wondrous journey of remembering why they exist. The characters are full of life and each one is on their own journey of discovering what matters most. We all knew “why” as a child but somewhere along the way, we forgot who we truly are. 500 first-edition copies of “Remembering Why” will be released in July 2017. Some of the key points I took from my time with Gerry include: Finding Your “Why” Is Not Linear - His discussion points about discovering your “why” not being a linear process really made me think about my own journey to “why,” my eventual reconnection to my inner child and where and when the different sparks of inspiration arrived. Quantum Creation – I can only imagine how often Gerry gets asked something like, “How do you do all of this?” I get asked it a lot, so I can only imagine what it’s like for Gerry. He gives us some great insight into it how he creates and does all that he does. Passion + Purpose = Outcome – If you spend any time at all around Gerry or absorbing his work, you’ll come across that formula of his. It may sound fundamental, but do you even know what you are passionate about? You may not. At a deeper level, you do. But on the surface? That may take some work. As Gerry said, “Most people are unaware that they are even unaware.” ©2017 Kevin Bulmer Enterprises
