Margaret, Todd and Claire chat with Michelle McVittie, known worldwide as "Mom The Manager"! In this episode the topic on everyone's mind was mental health, especially important during the pandemic. Michelle is a family and corporate consultant, child life specialist, speaker, author and the host of her own television show. Michelle is a past guest on BTasONE, when it was known as Let's Just Do This! With the right tools and support I believe change is possible. My story I’m the manager of my home, but it wasn’t always that way When you feel overwhelmed, anxious, resentful, or angry you can be on a private island with a personal chef and feel as though it’s not enough. Margaret, Todd and Claire speak with Dr. Naheed Dosani, a palliative care physician who cares for homeless and vulnerably housed individuals with dignity and compassion, whether in a shelter or on the street. During his family medicine residency at a Toronto shelter, Dr. Dosani had an experience with a homeless man who was dying of cancer, while also suffering with mental health issues and addictions. Despite working closely with the man to develop trust and a pain management plan, Dr. Dosani returned to the shelter one morning to learn that his patient was found dead on the street having overdosed the night before. The experience had a profound effect on Dr. Dosani and the trajectory of his career, motivating him to find ways to bridge the gap from the policy level to the individual level. During his final year of residency in palliative care at the University of Toronto, Dosani approached the Inner City Health Associates (ICHA) with an idea: to expand ICHA’s primary and mental health programs for the homeless and those with unreliable housing to include palliative care needs for those with life-limiting illness. After a year of planning, Dr. Dosani founded and launched Palliative Education And Care for the Homeless (PEACH) on the day he graduated in July 2014. Margaret, Todd and Claire speak with Caterina Moda, plus size model and Instagram Influencer, and Leslie Ann Spicer, fascial stretch therapist. We chatted with Caterina about her rise as a body-positive role model and brand influencer, when so many young women struggle with body issues. Leslie talked about how the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted her business, and how she pivoted to online services. Caterina's Bio: Born in Mississauga, Ontario, I have been modeling since 2013. My modelling collaborations include retail, design, editorial, print and runway. Born in an Italian family, fashion and style have always been a huge part of my upbringing, and modelling, for me, is a natural extension of that culture. I love fashion, networking and anything that elevates the curvy woman. Leslie's Bio: passion lay in sport and exercise. I excelled at sports in high school and as the years passed, I became increasingly interested in learning about optimal fitness and the physical skills needed to improve athletic performance. I wanted to know how the body worked and the science behind it. My journey started at the University of Western Ontario, where I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Kinesiology. In my four years at Western, I learned the core principles of anatomy, physiology and biomechanics of the body. Shortly after, I attended teacher’s college at the University of Toronto and completed a Bachelor of Education in Physical & Health Education. I also attained my canfitpro certification during this time, allowing me to work as a personal trainer in Canada. In 2008, I was hired as a personal trainer at a prominent fitness club and quickly advanced into the role of Fitness Manager where my responsibilities included hiring and developing new personal trainers as well as continuing to maintain a personal training clientele. Let's Just Do This - Dave Dubier from Mango Mirror joins Margaret and Todd to talk about what was once a mirror, is now and app and mirror! This amazing device helps power personal change, help with medications and health plans! From the Mango Mirror website: You have two lives. The second one begins when you realize you only have one. - Confucius As a Data Analyst and Business Intelligence consultant for over 10 years, Dave has witnessed first hand the importance of good data and dashboards in great decision making, enabling companies to get better and more successful. In the last few years Dave spent quite a bit of time at the hospitals as family members went through serious health issues. What he noticed there too, was that it was all dashboard driven. Patients were connected to dashboards displaying heart rate, respiration, temperature, blood pressure, blood glucose and more. All of this data enabled the hospital to provide excellent patient care. We have amazing health and fitness trackers like the Apple Watch and Fitbit. We have great apps to track our nutrition, like My Fitness Pal. And we also have connected weight scales, blood glucose monitors and blood pressure monitors. The problem is while they were all amazing at what they did, accessing the data and trying to piece it all together was extremely frustrating. It was while facing this problem that I came to the realization that what we need in our personal lives is exactly what businesses and hospitals have been using for years. The solution? A personal dashboard that provides you with the information you need, at the right time, in the right place. Allowing you to take control of your body, life and day ahead. And I believe that enhancing your daily routine with visibility into your key health and activity data will motivate and empower you to make great choices in the day ahead. And THAT is Mango Mirror! Dr. Marion Lyver and Izaak Del Mastro from Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Centre in Mississauga, ON join us to discuss the incredible benefits of this treatment. Izaak has used it since he was 13 years of age to treat a variety of challenges, including shoulder surgery healing! Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) involves breathing 100% pure oxygen while relaxing in a pressurized hyperbaric chamber. The increase in pressure, ranging from 1.5 to nearly 3 times normal atmospheric pressure, will allow up to 20 times more oxygen to be dissolved in the red blood cells, blood plasma, lymphatic fluid and cerebrospinal fluid. This dramatic increase in oxygen, along with the increase in pressure, enriches hypoxic (under-oxygenated) areas of the body and promotes accelerated healing of these damaged tissues on a cellular level. If you'd like further info about how hyperbaric oxygen treatment can POTENTIALLY help YOU, head over to the Under Pressure website at https://www.underpressurehbot.ca for further details or how to book a consult! Let's Just Do This Marci Warhaft and Scott Chisolm - In this podcast from Let's Just Do This, Margaret Wallis-Duffy and Todd Miller speak with Marci Warhaft, author and public speaker about her life challenges with an eating disorder and subsequent recovery. She also published an amazing book called "The Body Image Survival Guide for Parents". Marci travels far and wide speaking to schools and educators on how to foster a healthy body image. Joining Marci in the second half of the show is Scott Chisolm, career firefighter, paramedic, photographer, CEO and founder of the Collateral Damage Project, which will be a book and gallery exhibition of people that have lost loved ones to suicide. Scott has been personally touched by suicide, as he lost his father to it when Scott was 17, and is now on a mission to remove the stigma and shame of surviving someone's suicide, by removing the judgement, blame and shame and giving them permission to share THEIR stories. Have a listen to the podcast to learn more about these two warriors of light! About the Project “Collateral Damage, Images of Those Left Behind by Suicide,” will be a book of portraits, website and gallery exhibition of people who have had loved ones and friends die by suicide. When I was 17 years old (I’m now 46) my father died by suicide. Although I never hid the fact that my father took his own life, I often felt that I was left dealing with my pain and recovery in solitude, social stigma and loneliness. Throughout my professional career as a Paramedic and Firefighter, I often saw the beginning of the same pattern in the suicide calls that I attended to. I so often found myself wanting to say to grieving and demolished family members, “I know how you feel.” This pattern leaves the survivors of today feeling the same way I did 29 years ago. It is my hope that this project will begin to change this. The idea of putting a face to the loved ones and friends of those who have died by suicide has been with me for over ten years. I passionately believe that by stepping “out of the dark” and showing that I am a survivor of suicide will help those who are faced with a similar life changing experience today. I also believe that a collection of images of survivors will not only create a path of healing but also help with the social stigmas that continue to plague the issues of suicide and mental health. For this project, I am the sole photographer as I believe strongly that my vision and how it is photographed and presented is a message within itself. The images will be accompanied by short stories that individuals will share about their journey in suicide survivorship. The Collateral Damage Project is a registered not for profit that is governed by a volunteer board of directors. Application has been made for charitable status with the Canada Revenue Agency. If you'd like further info from Marci Warhaft, or to book her for a public speaking engagement, reach her at http://www.FitVsFiction.com, via email at marci.fitvsfiction@gmail.com, or via telephone at 416-669-4646. Let's Just Do This Scott Chisolm - In this podcast from Let's Just Do This, Margaret Wallis-Duffy and Todd Miller speak with Scott Chisolm, career firefighter, paramedic, photographer, CEO and founder of the Collateral Damage Project, which will be a book and gallery exhibition of people that have lost loved ones to suicide. Scott has been personally touched by suicide, as he lost his father to it when Scott was 17, and is now on a mission to remove the stigma and shame of surviving someone's suicide, by removing the judgement, blame and shame and giving them permission to share THEIR stories. Have a listen to the podcast to learn more about this amazing man on an amazing mission! If you'd like further info about the Collateral Damage Project, head over to http://leftbehindbysuicide.org/ for further details on how to get involved, or to book Scott to speak at an event!
