Months into an investigation, the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights has decided that East High School's all-gender restrooms do, in fact, violate Title IX. The feds gave DPS ten days from last Friday to comply with a resolution to convert the bathrooms back to single gender — and while Superintendent Alex Marrero responded by doubling down on the district's support of trans students, he has yet to comment specifically on whether DPS will follow through. Host Bree Davies and producer Olivia Jewell Love dig into the bathroom battle, plus discuss new data from RTD that shows customer complaints about open drug use along the transit system are down dramatically. Just say “NO.” Some approaches to “abundance” are healthy, but one brand of abundance that's been capturing the cultural moment lately is a recipe for a dead planet. Dave and Stephanie assess key points made by Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson in their book, Abundance. The result, a sound thrashing. The authors believe “America needs to build and invent more of the things it needs.” They advocate eliminating regulatory barriers that are keeping us from getting more, faster. Conservation and environmental stewardship are not on the agenda. Klein is a columnist for The New York Times and host of The Ezra Klein Show. Derek is a writer at The Atlantic and host of the Plain English podcast. They lean left, so many are suggesting the Democratic party should adopt “the abundance agenda” as it remakes itself in the wake of 2024 electoral defeat. In this episode, we make the case against that. We're not alone.

From center-left Ezra Klein to right-wing Matt Walsh, the fertility panic is an elite fixation that is rooted in a human supremacist worldview and a deep fear of slowing growth. Samuel Miller McDonald, geographer and author of the book Progress: A History of Humanity's Worst Idea, exposes how our parasitic relationship with Earth lies at the core of ecological overshoot, and why resisting authoritarianism in an age of contraction means embracing a pluralistic and just degrowth vision. Highlights include: Why our modern relationship to Earth is fundamentally parasitic - regardless of whether societies are capitalist or socialist; How media commentators resist degrowth in various stages and how their rejection reveals their lack of maturity in accepting responsibility for the ecological destruction we are causing; Why degrowth policies and practices should emphasize pluralistic, context-specific approaches rooted in democratic participation, not top-down master plans; Why many degrowth proponents have been dismissive of population concerns; Why the political right is more poised to benefit from ongoing economic contraction and why the liberal 'abundance agenda' needs to be resisted; Why conviviality and class solidarity are key to a successful degrowth transition and how modern societies undermine them; Why core values like fairness, autonomy, and ecological integrity will be essential in resisting authoritarians' claims to power in the coming challenging decades. See episode website for show notes, links, and transcript:  https://www.populationbalance.org/podcast/samuel-miller-mcdonald   OVERSHOOT | Shrink Toward Abundance OVERSHOOT tackles today's interlocked social and ecological crises driven by humanity's excessive population and consumption. The podcast explores needed narrative, behavioral, and system shifts for recreating human life in balance with all life on Earth. With expert guests from wide-ranging disciplines, we examine the forces underlying overshoot: from patriarchal pronatalism that is fueling overpopulation, to growth-biased economic systems that lead to consumerism and social injustice, to the dominant worldview of human supremacy that subjugates animals and nature. Our vision of shrinking toward abundance inspires us to seek pathways of transformation that go beyond technological fixes toward a new humanity that honors our interconnectedness with all beings.  Hosted by Nandita Bajaj and Alan Ware. If you think the American evangelical fixation over Israel's well-being is simply about "doing the right thing," my hunch is you'd be wrong. As a southern-born kid who grew up in the baptist faith, there's a lot I came away with despite that fact I'm now a 51-year old atheist. i'm not saying I didn't come away with some good values from that exposure to organized religion, but I'd like to think my family upbringing had an outsized role. What I do believe, however, is that protestant evangelical ties to the G.O.P. have everything to do with the Nixon-born "southern strategy" (dogwhistle racism, outright homophobia and now transphobia and xenophobia showing itself in spurts and fits when politically necessary). Because of that partnership, defending Israel is sacrosanct to the Republican (Democratic, too, if we're being honest) party's DNA. It's why a simpleton like Donald Trump gets so frustrated he and his party don't enjoy greater support from the Jewish American voting bloc. Like a long list of things Republicans are passionate about (the debt/deficit, immigration, reproductive rights come to mind), Israel's security isn't important to them because they're virtuous. Trump appointing former baptist minister-turned Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee to be the U.S. ambassador to Israel is about appeasing the evangelical voting bloc, who simply see Israel as being a 'necessity' to set the table for Jesus' return, per the book of Revelations. If I were Jewish and/or Israeli, it would insult me, and maybe that's one reason voters don't warm to Republican ideology. Huckabee, for his part, is outraged European allies are daring to have cross words for Israel in the midst of it's 20-month long seige on Gaza. Seriously, can Israel do no wrong with the otherwise "pro-life" evangelical Americans? Even former Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert is sounding the "genocidal" alarms. Is he somehow anti-Zionist or antisemitic now? That's the sort of lingo the right flings about anytime student protests come up at college and university campuses, after all.------While we're looking (and coming up empty) for some actual 'Christian values' in the G.O.P. playbook, their threatening cuts to social safety nets - Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security - seem like reasons for some Messianic table-flipping, no?Jay Bookman's latest op-ed - "There's no way to cut $800 billion from Medicaid without hitting bone" - goes right to the heart of the matter:"... if you still believe the administration, they're going to make those cuts without anyone losing benefits. As White House official Russell Vought put in last week, “This bill will preserve and protect the programs, the social safety net, but it will make it much more common sense. No one will lose coverage as a result.”If your BS detector isn't ringing by now, you need to take it in for repair.Confronted with the absurdity of claiming that you can cut $800 billion without canceling health care coverage, Trump officials retreat to their fallback position. Yes, they admit, they'll be cutting benefits, but only for those who don't deserve it. “Medicaid does not belong to people who are here illegally, and it does not belong to capable and able-bodied men who refuse to work,” another White House official told Politico. “So no one is getting cut.”Once again, though, your BS detector ought to be blaring. Under existing federal law, undocumented immigrants are already barred from getting Medicaid. They're promising to cut benefits to people who are already not getting those benefits. So no savings there. And the truth is, most of the able-bodied men who are too lazy to work are also too lazy to worry about jumping through the hoops needed to get Medicaid health-care coverage. Such men do exist, no doubt, but in numbers far too small to generate $800 billion in savings."More on that in the Thursday podcast.

What if you could have everything—the success, the rest, the freedom in your body—and it could actually feel easy? In this powerful episode of Let's Get the Skinny, I sit down with Hussa Al Hassawi (@hussa.lifeconsultancy), life coach, mother, and 10/10 alum, for a raw and radiant conversation about the lies we've been sold as women: that to be successful, we must sacrifice; that to be thin, we must suffer; and that to be lovable, we must hustle.Hussa shares her deeply personal experience of finally dropping into her body after a lifetime of emotional eating, people-pleasing, and operating in survival mode. Through the 10/10 Method, she didn't just release food obsession—she reclaimed her power, pleasure, and the peace she didn't know she was allowed to have. You'll hear how slowing down brought her more money, more joy, and the ability to nourish herself in ways she never imagined—without the scale, the guilt, or the chaos. If you've ever felt like you're doing everything “right” but still feel stuck in your body, your hunger, or your life—this episode is your invitation to pause, feel, and choose a new way forward.

Gratitude honors where we've been, but vision calls us to where we're going. We remember the past, not to idolize it, but to build upon it. Jesus didn't say, “I have built,” but “I will build my church”—a promise of forward motion. When we cling too tightly to what was, we risk missing what God is doing now. We are being called into a season of bold faith, fresh purpose, and Spirit-led growth—where the church rises not just in memory of what was, but in pursuit of what's yet to come.Bottom Line:We honor the past, but we build the future God is calling us into.Want to hear more sermons? https://www.experiencechurch.tv/sermonsWant to support the ministry? https://www.experiencechurch.tv/give-nowWant to plan your visit? https://www.experiencechurch.tv/planyourvisit

How do you process emotions after years of drinking when you've spent a lifetime disconnected from your feelings? In this powerful episode, Coach Ellie works with Gayle and Christie, who both struggle with alcohol fixation but from different angles. Gayle feels constantly consumed by thoughts about drinking or not drinking, finding that fixation creates anxiety, overwhelm, and triggers deep stories of not being good enough. Christie has spent decades suppressing emotions and using wine as a "talking stick" to allow herself to feel things, rather than numbing. Through gentle exploration, Coach Ellie helps both women understand the path from fixation to liberation - recognizing that spiritual awakening often begins with alcohol freedom but leads to something much deeper: recovering our true nature and learning to be present with all our emotions. In Gayle's Session: Defining fixation How fixation creates physical symptoms of anxiety and overwhelm The path from cognitive understanding to embodied knowledge Experiencing "the magic trick": seeing alcohol's truth changes everything The role of data points in building new beliefs about alcohol How to process emotions after years of drinking through presence Recovery of self: discovering who you are without alcohol Why alcohol freedom is just the doorway to deeper transformation The concepts of true nature and soul edification  And more In Christie's Session: Moving from fear-based motivation to emotion-based goals Finding joy after years of emotional disconnection The connection between creativity and emotional healing Recognizing permission to feel all emotions, not just "acceptable" ones How to process emotions after years of drinking through bodily awareness Restorative yoga as a bridge to feeling into the body Cues of safety that help regulate the nervous system The concept of "unf*withable" emotional resilience Moving beyond perfectionism The role of curiosity in spiritual liberation And other topics Related Episodes: Reader's Question - Episode 634: How do you get rid of the punishing voice inside your head?  - https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-634-readers-question-how-do-you-get-rid-of-the-punishing-voice-inside-your-head/ Episode 69: Allowing Feeling with Scott Stabile - https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-69-allowing-feeling-scott-stabile/ Reader's Question - Episode 604: Embracing Your Authentic Self - https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-604-reader-question-embracing-your-authentic-self-overcoming-self-judgment-and-insecurities/ Ready to take the next step on your journey?  Visit https://learn.thisnakedmind.com/podcast-resources for free resources, programs, and more. It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with David McWilliams, Irish economist and writer, to discuss Trump's interest in the presidency of William McKinley. Then, she speaks with Lily Greenberg Call, former political appointee in the Biden administration, to discuss the recent developments in the detention of Mahmoud Khalil. First, Emma runs through updates on the Senate's vote on cloture and the Continuing Resolution, Trump's mass layoffs, the gutting of the DOE, Trump's trade war with Europe, the falling stock market, Trump's failed nomination for CDC director, Tim Walz's political tour, the UN's independent inquiry into Israel's genocide, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Mayor of Miami's crackdown on free speech, and the attack on the IRS, before expanding on the ongoing fight within the US Senate to block the GOP's partisan Continuing Resolution which would effectively neuter Congress amid Trump's reign, and watching Markwayne Mullin accidentally give away the game on Trump's tariff war. David McWilliams then dives right into the historical context for Trump's obsession with William McKinley – 25th President of the United States – highlighting how the election of McKinley in 1896 served as a major turning point in the evolution of the Gilded Age, as a culmination of a populist push against growing economic consolidation amid increasing culture war and a rapidly growing (and changing) working class with an influx of European immigration, and the very clear parallels with how Trump is handling the similarities in this moment, from his alignment with the monopolists and oligarchs of the time, to his obsession with small territorial acquisitions while pushing an isolaitonist economic agenda. After touching on the end to McKinley with his assassination in 1901 and the major role his Vice President Teddy Roosevelt would play in pushing back against the political takeover of robber barons and monopolists, putting a bit of a damper on potential parallels to the Big Tech-backed JD Vance, McWilliams walks Emma through McKinley's expansive project to bolster the pockets of his wealthy donors, from cementing the shift to a gold standard (crypto reserve anyone?!) and bolstering rail monopoly at the expense of America's farming majority, to the inception of lobbying with the backing of his 1896 campaign by notorious businessman Mark Hanna (Musk), who would rally the wealthy elite behind McKinley to change the facts on the ground. Having briefly expanded on McKinley's imperial agenda, and the particular role it plays in creating an atmosphere of chaos to mask the kleptocracy at work, David looks to the extreme lengths Trump has taken McKinley tariff regime, applying them to quite literally every close ally the US has in such a drastic manner it offers little explanation outside of in-group speculation while the economy as a whole collapses. They wrap up the interview by touching on the role McKinleyism and the Gilded Age played in spurring the emergence of the US labor movement under FDR. Lily Greenberg-Call then joins as she and Emma parse through the abduction and detainment of Columbia University activist and Greencard holder/permanent US resident Mahmoud Khalil over his speech in support of a free Palestine, reflecting on the vast distance between the response Chuck Schumer gave – largely defending Israel and denouncing Khalil's speech – and that of Chris Murphy – who cites the criminalization of speech that goes against Trump's agenda in contrast with the happy embrace of explicitly Nazi speech. Next, they dissect the particularly disgusting way in which antisemitism has been abused over this fight, from the White House's explicit references to judaism in their flaunting of this authoritarian overstep, to the fact that the statute they're using to defend their action is grounded in the antisemitic McCarthyist movement, and the value of seeing Jewish Americans stand up and fight for Mahmoud Khalil's rights, wrapping up the interview by emphasizing the need to keep that momentum going, showing up in the streets to fight for Khalil and any other victims of the Trump regime. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they unpack dweebs Tim Pool and Russell Brand's fear of a real punk rock lifestyle (shoutout Against Me!), before talking to Rob from DC about calling our Senators. They also do some side-by-side comparisons of NYC candidates for Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Andrew Cuomo in their response to the abduction of New Yorker Mahmoud Khalil at the hands of the Trump administration, before listening to Tommy Tuberville explain why its fine to treat protesters this way, actually, and watching economists struggle with explaining Trump's tariff agenda. They also reflect a little more on Against Me! and trans identity with Ramona Frankenstein, before Mimi from Colorado delivers a plea to save our federal land, plus, your calls and IMs!
