Ben and Nemone put sous-chef Sydney Adamu from The Bear into therapy. She helps whip the team at the restaurant into shape, she's nurturing but anxious and riddled with self-doubt, not to mention a person of colour with the highest of ambitions in a profession dominated by white men. Mouthwatering, no? We want to hear about any theories we might have missed, what you've thought of the show so far and your character suggestions. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to write a TV or movie? If you had total creative freedom to pitch a show or movie, what would it be about? Would you center Filipino or Filipino American stories? In this TFAL episode, we talk TV writing with the one and only Rene Gube,...

As Rachel Bloom and Aline Brosh McKenna's exuberant, complicated, hilarious rom-com-musical-psychological-comedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend wraps up its four-season run on the CW, Allison and Clint decided to take some time in between main episodes to talk about the show's unsung (well, less sung, they all sing) recurring characters - from Michael Hyatt's sage Dr. Akopian to Rene Gube's divinely chill Father Brah. But we can't help but wonder if there's someone we're forgetting, someone who shouldn't be ignored... Oh! It's George, he of the delightful ad-libbed songs about getting coffee, one of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend's most beloved supporting players. And lucky for us, the one and only Danny Jolles joins us later in the episode to talk about George's curious evolution, the origins of his breakout on the show, and more! Hall of Faces is a proud member of the Chicago Podcast Coop. Thanks to Cards Against Humanity for sponsoring this episode!)
Rene Gube (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Ground Floor) and Jacob Womack (Key & Peele, Lane Woods Finds Love) come on the program for a mini Hip Hop Penguin Reunion. Rene talks about reexamining his childhood now that he's expecting a baby, Jacob talks about a phase in his life when he got really into BMX bikes and the movie "Rad". These true stories inspire improvised scenes about the love lives of birds, raising a 9-year-old businessman, the mysterious world of diaphragms and more! Comedian and writer Rene Gube fills in while Ingrid is visiting Canada, and Mel gets in a fight with the CEO of Tinder and debates actually following through with a Tinder hook up.
Lilan Bowden is on the show! You may know Lilan from Bonafide, Styx Martin, or TAB, the host team of Crashbar! Lilan and I chat about being in love with what other people are bringing into improv scenes. Lilan also coaches me through having a healthy view of auditioning for harold teams. We talk a bit about Maude night. And we talk about a bunch of other important improv stuff! Lilan gets to weigh in on the conversation that Rene Gube and I had on whether or not it’s funny to hit Lilan. Also, I keep asking if Lilan’s ok. I’m very worried about Lilan’s well being cause I love her so! Rate. Subscribe. Donate. Comment. Enjoy. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
RENE GUBE is on the show! You know him from the stunning UCBLA Harold Team, John Velvet. You also know him as one of the charismatic hosts of Room 101. Rene sits down and talks with me a bit about playing things real in scenes, and working to the best of your ability. We also talk a bit about how it would definitely be funny to slap Lilan Bowden. After all that we go on to the heavier stuff, people being dismissive of improv and the fact that it can and does lead you to wonderful things in life. This episodes less technical, less heady, but more heartful. And isn't that what it's all about? Rate, subscribe, comment, ENJOY! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Rene Gube (writer, Up All Night) joins Jen to talk about a couple of amazing indie movies starring and co-written by Brit Marling. Whether playing a girl whose quest for redemption after a drunk driving accident coincides with the discovery of another Earth that's a mirror to ours, or a girl forming a cult of followers around herself by claiming to be from the year 2054, Marling makes movies that leave a great deal up to the viewer's interpretation. Which means Rene and Jen have an awful lot to talk about. An important note on spoilers! Rene and Jen discuss the end of Sound of My Voice from 49:25-56:19 and the end of Another Earth from 56:19-1:03:26, so if you haven't seen either or both of these movies yet, you can safely listen to the rest of the episode and just avoid the relevant spoiler-y chunks. And if you're enjoying PrePopCulture, please rate/review it on iTunes, and like it on Facebook! Show Notes: Follow Rene on Twitter and check out Hop Hop Penguin, UCB Harold Team John Velvet, indie improv show Room 101, Werner Hotdog: The Documentary, and the show he writes for, NBC's Up All Night. Another Earth is available on DVD and Blu-ray Sound of My Voice will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on October 2, 2012 Theme Music: Theme song: Alps by Motorama is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial No Derivatives (aka Music Sharing) License
