Today we're going back to October 4, 1943, for one of the wildest and weirdest comedy programs ever to hit the airwaves, It Pays to Be Ignorant. Hosted by Tom Howard and featuring his panel of so-called “experts,” Harry McNaughton, Lulu McConnell, and George Shelton, the show turns the idea of a quiz show upside down, serving up ridiculous questions, nonsensical answers, and nonstop vaudeville-style banter. You'll also hear authentic 1940s flavor with wartime bond announcements and classic Peele's Beer ads, plus a musical interlude from the Korn Kobblers, a novelty band in the spirit of Spike Jones and His City Slickers. The perfect ending to a half hour of vintage radio nonsense. Day 21 – Episode 171: Us (2019)On Day 21 of The Conner & Smith Show's 31 Days of Halloween, Ryan and I dive into Jordan Peele's Us (2019) — a chilling and complex exploration of duality, privilege, and identity. This isn't just a home-invasion thriller; it's a layered allegory packed with symbolism, social commentary, and unforgettable performances. From the haunting use of “I Got 5 on It” to the eerie concept of the Tethered, Peele crafts a film that rewards multiple viewings and endless interpretation. It's both terrifying and thought-provoking — the kind of horror that lingers long after the credits roll.Support The Conner & Smith Show on Patreon here:
Filmen har Mark Wahlberg (The Departed, Ted) i hovedrollen og Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele, The Super Mario Bros.

Greg Alba & Andrew Gordon dive into Us (2019), the critically acclaimed horror film written and directed by Jordan Peele (Get Out, Nope). A chilling exploration of duality, privilege, and hidden societal truths, Us follows Adelaide Wilson, played by Lupita Nyong'o (Black Panther, 12 Years a Slave), as she takes her family on a beach vacation only to be confronted by terrifying doppelgängers known as the “Tethered.” Alongside Nyong'o, the cast includes Winston Duke (Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War) as her husband Gabe, Shahadi Wright Joseph (The Lion King 2019, Hairspray Live!) as daughter Zora, and Evan Alex (Mani) as son Jason. The film also features standout performances from Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid's Tale, Mad Men) and Tim Heidecker (Tim & Eric Awesome Show), whose chilling turns highlight Peele's ability to blend suburban normalcy with pure terror. From the unforgettable opening scenes at the Santa Cruz boardwalk to the haunting “Hands Across America” imagery and the now-iconic reveal of Red (Nyong'o's Tethered double) with her eerie, rasping voice, Us has become one of the most analyzed and highly searched horror films of the past decade. In this full reaction & review, Greg and Andrew break down Peele's masterful use of symbolism, the shocking home invasion sequences, the underground world of the Tethered, and the legendary final twist that redefined how audiences see Adelaide's story. Whether it's the chilling “Good Vibrations” sequence, the scissor imagery, or Nyong'o's tour-de-force dual performance, Us remains a milestone in modern horror cinema. The Harrington Brothers (so Thadd and Luke say) join us to talk about 2023's highly enjoyable Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Jordan Peele's Get Out is a masterpiece both firmly planted in the rich tradition of horror and at the forefront of the growing genre of new Black horror. As auditors of the zeitgeist, we simply had to talk about the splash it made in 2017 and the conversation around its legacy since. In this episode we consider what made the narrative so impactful and we take a closer look at its reception by white audiences and critics who were particularly interested in claiming Peele's work as an example of "Black Excellence." Marcelle and Hannah parse the complexity of the term and pull on Cheryl Thompson's work to understand how "Black Excellence became the veil that shielded people from seeing how our systems and institutions are still rooted in White supremacist notions of ‘success'." To better understand the film itself, Marcelle then draws on “Horrifying Whiteness and Jordan Peele's Get Out" written by Julia Mollenthiel — an artcile that defines a theoretical lens to help us think about the growing genre of new Black horror: “horrifying whiteness.”Even if you're a weenie when it comes to horror, this is an episode you don't want to miss! It's that time again for another (albeit slightly delayed) episode of Cast A Role, and this week the Mega Wheel presented us with one of Nicks films that he believes Jim should have watched by now. In this episode, we dive into Jordan Peele's Get Out (2017), the groundbreaking psychological horror film that blends suspense, satire, and razor-sharp social commentary. We break down the film's most memorable moments — from the chilling “Sunken Place” to the unsettling Armitage family — and explore how Peele redefined modern horror. Join us as we discuss Daniel Kaluuya's standout performance, the hidden symbolism woven throughout the story, and why Get Out remains one of the most talked-about films of the 2010s. Whether you're a horror fan, a film buff, or just curious about the meaning behind the movie's iconic imagery, this episode offers fresh insights and plenty to think about. As usual, not all of us were fully on board with this episode (we'll give you one guess as to who). Is this opinion Justified? Or that lost their minds from spending too much time with Mrs Armitage? This week on That Was Wild, Adam welcome the hilarious Hal Rudnick (Screen Junkies, Key and Peele, Community) to talk about his new one man show Jersey Devil now play at the Hollywood Fringe! They dive deep into the insane character that the show is based on, Roger Rudnick - who was a gambling addict, show promoter, and thief! Speaking of toxic, Adam and Hal dive into this wild internet trend of taking Sam Brown's poem to then super cut it with pictures of T-rex's, muscle cars, muscle men, and fighter jets. It's very base but also very cool. Hal and Adam talk about their experience with toxic masculinity with their toxic dads and how all though t-rex's are cool, maybe you don't need them to be masculine. Many years ago, a wise principal once told me that good instruction is the best classroom management tool teachers have at their disposal. In Session 293, Dr. Todd Haydon joins me to discuss the practice of increasing the rate of students' opportunities to respond (OTR), which is an instructional practice that has been shown to improve classroom behavior. In doing so, Todd and I did a deep dive on his dissertation work, which culminated in the study, Haydon, Mancil, and Van Loan (2009). This study began with a referral to help students who engaged in disruptive and off-task behaviors. Rather than conduct several individual FBAs, Todd and his colleagues coached the teacher to increase the rate of posing academic questions to the class. The results spoke for themselves, and the rest is history. So tune in to learn how this practice works, and maybe it can be something that will help you in your practice! Oh, and by the way, he concludes the podcast with a very memorable story, so be sure to tune into the entire episode!
