The Super Cagle Bros are the nerdy lineup for today's episode, and they are tackling not only some geek-based headlines but also creating their own celebrity deathmatch! Harry Styles spit on Chris Pine, Olivia Wilde chased off Shia LaBeouf, and has issues with Florence Pugh... so all of this drama can only be settled one way; a pro wrestling match! CAC and Jared narrate this fantasy epic! Additional topics: What is going on with the "Don't Worry Darling" film and its drama, Gremlins 2 director confirms the Key & Peele sketch was pretty spot on, which of Nicolas Cage's characters are his best (according to a website... and debated by us), and lastly a funny story about the University of Central Michigan passing out some keyboard stickers to their students... and it turns out UCM has a bit of a different order on the keyboard (oof). --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rage-you-nerds/support

Ah-hah, hush that fuss, Pop Screen is back with Graham and Dreaming Machine's Joe to take a look at OutKast's 2006 movie vehicle Idlewild. It's not uncommon for rappers to make their big-screen debuts by playing gangsters, but as ever Andre 3000 and Big Boi found their own unique way of doing things, by setting it all in an anachronistically-scored Black bohemia in the 1930s. It's a gangster movie, it's a backstage musical, it's a Prohibition drama, it's a hip-hop film... it's so many things, in fact, that the audience were confused and stayed at home. While not perfect, it deserved a better fate. Join Graham and Joe as they discuss the film's dynamite cast, its odd but intriguing parent album - which is, as of 2022, the last OutKast record - and the shadow that one immortal Key and Peele sketch has cast over OutKast discourse. We also consider how the band's legacy only appears to have grown since their split, and reference that weird news story from a few years back about someone spotting Andre Benjamin just wandering around an airport playing jazz flute. That was a good one. Remember that hilarious Jordan Peele from sketch comedy shows like Mad TV and Key & Peele? Well he decided to make a movie, and I'm sure it's going to be... hilarious. Artwork by Dustin Goebel. Follow @dgoebel00 on instagram. Synopsis Chris Washington, played by Daniel Kaluuya, is taking a vacation with his girlfriend to meet her family. Played by Allison Williams, his girlfriend Rose convinces Chris that her family will be perfectly fine with her dating a black man despite the fact that she never told them about his race. The weekend begins pleasant, albeit slightly awkward. However as time goes on, Chris notices weird behavior from the black employees of the family. Chris becomes suspicious that something is wrong, but before he can GET OUT, he's caught in the family's trap and has to escape a fate worse than death. https://youtu.be/DzfpyUB60YY Review of Get Out Get Out is Jordan Peele's first film as a writer/director and he delivered way beyond expectations given his sketch comedy background. Peele turns out to be an expert at building tension while utilizing, and commenting on latent racial tension in the US.  https://www.horrormovietalk.com/2022/07/27/nope-review/ I distinctly remember seeing the trailer in the movie theater and was immediately delighted by the implied premise of the film, that the scariest thing to a young black man, is...white people. It really is impressive how this film gives a really nuanced social commentary on what it is like to experience racism. Peele didn't choose the easy target of right wing southern whites as the danger to Chris, he specifically used an affluent “New York liberal type” family. It expresses the false sense of security of a masked racism right below the surface that others and marginalizes black people. The quality of this commentary is really magnified by all of the racial allegory horror movies that have come out since. Just watch Antebellum or the Candyman remake to see how blunt these allegories can be. Score 10/10 Get Out Add it to your collection or rent it now.Click here to buy

Jordan Peele's launch from a solid comedy base with Key & Peele to the unexpected Get Out was so impressive that he's generated a huge amount of good will that allows him to play the full-on auteur with huge budgets. Did that pay off with his third film, the monster movie Nope? Mark is joined by Lawrence Ware, Sarahlyn Bruck, and Nicole Pometti. For more, visit prettymuchpop.com. Thinking Outside The Long Box

Jordan Peele has been making some very interested movies these past few years. Today's topic is no different, in the weirdness scale. It's pretty different as far as the alien genre movie goes, but it seems to be pretty on coarse for a Jordan Peele movie!! I think that the pair of us may have thought it went just a tad too far in that direction, but what did you all think of the Jordan Peele film, Nope? "Two siblings running a horse ranch in California discover something wonderful and sinister in the skies above, while the owner of an adjacent theme park tries to profit from the mysterious, otherworldly phenomenon." What happens when two siblings find something in the sky that they don't know how to explain? On top of that there seem to be many disappearances? For the most part, this is a film in the alien genre, but I promise, you're not going to be able to predict what happens at the end of the movie!! You definitely need to check this out, even if Peele's movies aren't always for you!  SUBSCRIBE: Apple Podcasts | Android |  Spotify | Pandora | RSS Tell us what you think!Leave us a voicemail at 970-573-6148Send us feedback and/or MP3's to outsidethelongbox@gmail.comFollow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Youtube!Support the podcast on Patreon!Credit - Doyle Daniels, Juan Muro

Writer-Director Ben Kegan always knew he had a strong passion for character, film and storytelling. His growing up in a John Hughes-esque Chicago suburb is apt considering his eventual exploration of the sex-quest genre of teen movies in college. His evolution through the wrestling biopic short, Team Taliban, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival; the complicated love-triangle surveyed in Commencement, which he shot at Whitman College, his alma mater; the Hypocrite; and After Christmas featuring Chicago theatre legend Barbara Robertson, helped exhibit his versatility as a cleverly-synchronized writer-director. His most recent efforts include the renowned short, The First Men, which featured Maria Blasucci (Ghost Ghirrls, Family Tree, Key and Peele) and the enigmatic, menacing force of Bo Mitchell (Cobra Kai, Eastbound & Down, October Road); Fractions of Speed, a documentary short profiling the mid-distance runner and Olympic hopeful Peter Callahan, which he just shot as a feature film; and the military-themed documentary Expiration Term of Service. In our conversation, the Columbia MFA graduate remarks about the films which impacted his unique approach through the lens of Chicago, improvisational comedy and the subjects he portrays in his films.Opening Credits: One Man Book - Scaffold of Repeated Addition; Closing Credits: Ketsa - Another-Day

Rich wrote and produced on shows like MADtv, Review, Saturday Night Live & The Tonight Show. Rich is an alum of Chicago's Second City. Rich appeared in featured roles on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, MADtv, the feature film High Fidelity and numerous TV ads including A&W Root Beer's classic commercial, "Mr. Dumass.” more at richtalarico.com . Rich is a WGAw Show Captain for Key & Peele Rich's recent interview I just did with latenightist, that explains the issues I'm campaigning on https://latenightist.com/q_and_a/pay-your-writers-a-q-and-a-with-rich-talarico-of-key-peele/ Rich's official campaign site for his WGA Board Seat Campaign: https://elections.wga.org/2022/rich-talarico WHY RICH IS RUNNNG FOR THE WGA BOARD Comedy writers have not been and are not being appropriately paid by the studios, and we need the Guild's help in this fight. Unfair use and numerous, MBA violations affects not just Key & Peele, but virtually all comedy writers, including many of the most known, most beloved shows. Royalty payments are distributed to heirs, and heirs of heirs. We need systemic change as companies continue to egregiously violate the 5 minute promotional clip exemption in our contract.  Additionally, WGA writers' material is being unjustly exhibited on www.cc.com as an "Archive" (but we are not being paid archival rates) and according to MBA, "archival is not promotional." We need fair back pay for any and all Archival Postings exhibited on the cc.com. In addition to seeking better transparency between the studios and WGA, I pledge to advocate for improved communication between writers and the Guild. OVER-PROMOTION & THE ABUSE OF THE 5 MIN PROMO CLIP RULE First, what is a clip? The industry standard on what a promo clip is, has long been established as “Merv Griffin” style bits to entice the audience to watch/buy. Longer than something you would see on a talk show is too long. And, Viacom flooding the promotional space with hundreds upon hundreds of “promo” clips (many of which are illegally over the five minute limit) destroys us financially and will ultimately devastate all comedy writers' livelihoods. You consume a sketch show differently than you would consume a sitcom or drama. A clip from a sitcom or drama would entice you to watch the full episode or season, which you would theoretically have to pay for, while a sketch show clip would entice you to watch more sketches, which are currently available for free. This is not promotional use. This is not a fair and reasonable reading of the MBA "promo exemption clause." While the MBA is silent on the number of clips that can be used as excerpts, it is not fair and reasonable to gobble up whole shows and display them as “promotional.” The clips fail to be excerpts-- if the entire show can be watched for free in excerpt form. The promotion, in our case, is the exhibition.  As we've argued since 2013, five to ten clips per season should be sufficient to entice an audience to buy. Originally, the Guild backed us on this, but have since chosen to ignore these violations. Key & Peele only has 298 sketches in total. As of December, 2020 (just on YouTube) there were over 350 “promotional” full-sketch uploads and Viacom continues to add more day by day. Of these 350+ uploads, there are (at least) 35 compilations which include bundles of Key & Peele sketches, some of these are longer than the length of full episodes. There are also uploads that exceed seven, eight, and 12 hours. This does not even account for Facebook, TikTok, Instagram and other platforms where there are also hundreds of millions of “promotional” streams.

In terms of narrative, there's not that much connecting NOPE's flying-saucer story with that of THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, but Jordan Peele's latest is as likely to someday serve as a document of this particular moment as its 1953 predecessor. A thematically dense and bracingly cinematic film, NOPE is uninterested in providing its viewers with neat answers, but we do our best to (begin to) untangle Peele's web of ideas before bringing his film into conversation with THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, to consider the alien motivations and human responses that connect these two invasions across the decades. With their potent mix of horror, comedy, and social satire, the films of Jordan Peele are the rare Hollywood films that succeed in entertaining while also puzzling, sending audiences out of the theater sifting through clues in an attempt to find meaning. Peele's latest - NOPE - is no exception, with Adam and Josh sharing their own theories about the director/prophet's wild west sci-fi that's loaded with themes of trauma, spectacle, race, and the movie industry's complicity in all those things. Also, there are some scares. And some laughs. Adam and Josh get spoiler-y in the second half of the review to sort out some lingering questions.
