Alternative realities have been speculated by many people, the curious becoming concerned with our reactions to such drastic differences. What if you met yourself? What would you say? This idea helped the filmmaker Mark Cahill to create the sci-fi motion picture, 'Another Earth'. Within the film, Mark chose these questions to intertwine with a heartfelt story of an ambitious young student and an accomplished composer crossing paths in a tragic accident. This accident would then form a timeline of events that would question the concept of alternative realities, external and internal conflicts, acceptance of oneself, and the beauty of distractions.

Helping children establish boundaries is important for developing friendships and maintaining positive social interactions. Boundaries help people set limits for themselves and honor limits set by others. In "Boundaries," three eight- and nine-year-old kids (Olivia, Izzy, and Wynter) define and discuss boundaries and help Qook-a-leekie and Link-a-deedle friends learn the importance of boundaries. They discover that understanding someone else's boundaries requires empathy, the ability to recognize others' feelings...and that takes practice. The role of Qwee-vee the Qook-a-leekie is played by Ana Cruz Kayne and the role of Lexton the Link-a-deedle is played by Michael Cruz Kayne. Ana and Michael are siblings in real life, so they know a thing or two about boundaries. Before becoming an entertainment powerhouse, Brit Marling was headed toward the world of investment banking. But during a college internship at Goldman Sachs, her gut told her that finance wasn't the field she should be in. With a desire to tell stories, she soon pivoted into independent filmmaking. In 2011, she made a major splash in the entertainment industry when her films Another Earth and Sound of My Voice premiered side by side at the Sundance Film Festival. Both films were nominated for Independent Spirit Awards and picked up for distribution by Fox Searchlight, and in the years following, Brit went on to create massive hits like The East and The OA. Now, she's evolving her career yet again: In November, Marling made her television directorial debut on the FX murder mystery show Murder at the End of the World starring Emma Corrin. Catch the finale of the series tomorrow, December 19. See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
This week we are going backn in the way back machine to 2011 when indie sci-fi was on the in. Another Earth is the film written by director Mike Cahill and star Brit Marling. This film duo makes a gem of a movie about how a tragic accident derails a young girls potential as a mirror Earth is discovered. Enjoy Katie and Darren's discussion on the film.

Brit Marling is an inspiration. The talented multi-hypenate became an indie darling in 2011 with “Another Earth” and “Sound of My Voice”—collaborations with Mike Cahill and Zal Batmanglij respectively. She avoided various vapid roles and unfulfilling career paths and instead went on to star in (and co-create with Batmanglii) the hit Netflix series “The OA,” which was bafflingly cancelled after two seasons, despite a rabid and large fan base. The two are back with another series, “A Murder At The End of The World”—a cool Zoomer detective whodunit set in a remote super-hotel in Iceland. On this episode, she talks about how knowing she will have to play a character affects the writing process, the “shared loneliness” of collaboration, using AI as a story element before the world even knew it existed, why she has to hold on to her character during the editing process, the cosmic concoction she uses to make her ideas grow, and much more. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram
For more than a decade, actor and writer Brit Marling has made futuristic work that reveals truths about our disquieting present. Her latest endeavor, A Murder At the End of the World, is no exception. We recently sat with Marling in front of a live audience as part of this year's On Air Fest LA Annex, where we discussed her excellent new show on FX (8:34), the role artificial intelligence may play in the future of filmmaking (14:26), and where she first fell in love with science fiction (20:35). Then, Brit reflects on her winding path at Goldman Sachs and Georgetown (23:40), where she met longtime collaborators Zal Batmanglij and Mike Cahill (25:25) that would eventually result in films like Another Earth and Sound of My Voice (36:18). On the back-half, we speak on the power of collective action (41:30), the public outcry that followed the cancellation of The OA (45:15), the state of Hollywood (51:12), and why Brit was inspired to direct (57:00) upon finding a passage from the late Polish auteur, Krzysztof Kieślowski (57:35). Disney spent 350 million making the pretty-fun Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and 288 million making the downright awful Black Widow. Help NinetyForChill: The #Podcast get away from paywalls by subscribing to "Ninety For Chill: The Podcast with CatBusRuss". CatBusRuss is doing his best to overcome exhaustion. Fan Expo Chicago calls for exploration means there was no time for relaxation. Our host has worked himself sick, so he felt lucky to get in three movies since returning from Rosemont. And after starting the week with his Netflix DVD rental, "Another Earth", getting up the energy to watch 1979's "The Lion, the Witch, & the Wardrobe" and 2022's "Thor: Love and Thunder" should be considered an accomplishment. These three movies are all worthwhile. "Another Earth" is science fiction that challenges the genre's demand for visual effects. The adaptation of the first "Chronicle of Narnia" is an interesting attempt to sneak Christianity into schools. And while avoiding films in the franchise that are based around a new characters, Russ has enjoyed diving into Phase 4 of the MCU. But all of these features present challenges to enjoy them. There is a very dour premise with the indie film. The cartoon features questionable character designs that make you wonder why they did not stick to their "Charlie Brown" style. And you can see why there are three credited editors on the Marvel movie. It is definitely going to be a one flick movie this week for the CatBus. His strength must be regained.
Once again, #FanboySummer moves by quickly, as this week, another loser winner contributor joins the show, this time for best "Conceptual Sci-Fi". What does that even mean? We have no idea, but who cares... as per usual, we go with it and have a fantastic time doing so. Joining the show is the Rocket Man himself, Uncle Brian E, as he, Mikey, d$, and #TwitterlessDrEarl play a little round of ABCDeez, borrowing from fellow podcaster Doug Benson, as we use letters from a movie phrase to call out movie titles, figure out the theme and try to match up. Then, a series of categories, from "robots" to "time travel" to "realistic" and more, calling out movies in many of those categories, plus all the discussion that go with it. And Mikey met up with Glosson to see Petra. Not Pantera. Films discussed tonight: Films for rental only: Alien Nation... Another Earth... Blade Runner... Close Encounters of the Third Kind... Contact... HER... Logan's Run... The Martian... Moon... Predestination... Primer... Serenity... Tenet... THX 1138... Are we alone in the universe? And if not, what does that mean? And what would aliens be like? And what would they want? To destroy us? To bring peace? To gain knowledge?…Sounds like it's time for Episode 81 of Pop Art, where we find the pop culture in art and the art in pop culture. It's the podcast where my guest chooses a movie from popular culture, and I'll select a film from the more art/classic/indie side of cinema with a connection to it. This time I am happy to welcome as my guest, writer Caitlin Duffy, who has chosen as her film the hard sci-fi Jody Foster film Contact, while I have chosen soft sci-fi Brit Marling film Another Earth, both films about first contact with beings from another planet. And in this episode, we answer such questions as: What is SETI? What is hard sci-fi as opposed to soft sci-fi? Who do they want to play the president in Contact? Who is the Saw Lady? Why did they use Bill Clinton? What is special about the opening shot in Contact? Cyanide pill or no cyanide pill? Who is Steven Ford's father? How does Gianni Versace fit in? Two Nerds was contacted by a friend of ours recently who put in some requests for podcat subjects. On the list were some titles we'd already tackled, like Another Earth and Shane Carruth's Primer, and some we hadn't yet, like Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. This got us thinking about movies which are mindbenders: often high concept, maybe a little arthouse, and definitely out to blow your mind. Science fiction can be especially fruitful for mindbending, as it allows the artist latitude to mess with reality itself, to present extreme circumstances and and mine them for their philosophical possibilities. Rather than retread old ground, we took as our subject two mindbenders we hadn't discussed yet: 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Shane Carruth's second film, Upstream Color. (We also watched 2010, but I wouldn't call that one a mindbender.) We definitely make mention of Aronofsky's The Fountain a bunch, as that's a mindbender both of us keep coming back to (even though objectively it's a pretty infuriating movie?) Either way, prepare to have your mind blown.

Two Nerds have spent the last few episodes discussing time travel, repeating day, or otherwise timey-wimey narratives. Adjacent to that (and often overlapping) are stories that explore parallel worlds. In this outing, we discuss the movies Sliding Doors and Another Earth, and touch on a series called Counterpart. Sliding Doors is a rom-com from 1999, and Another Earth a melancholy indie movie from 2005. Counterpart is something like a spy thriller, with two alternate Earths in a cold war of sorts.
