Building a business with purpose will push you to grow in ways you probably didn't expect. What happens when your ambition outpaces your timing? Or when your team starts breaking down and you realize the real issue starts with you?   In this episode, Alex Raymond talks with Brian Dally, the co-founder and CEO of Groundfloor, a fintech company that gives everyday investors access to real estate debt. Brian shares what he learned from starting too early, betting on the wrong timelines, and eventually paving the way for a market that wasn't quite ready for him.   Brian also opens up about a turning point in his leadership when a blowout between two teams during a family ski trip forced him to confront the culture he had helped create. That moment led to a reset, not just in how the company operated, but in how he saw himself as a leader.   What do you do when your company hits a wall? How do you stay committed when the cost of building starts to feel personal? Brian reflects on his spiritual life, his leadership missteps, and the values that guide him today. He also shares the habits that keep him steady like hiking Colorado trails, practicing mindfulness, and checking in with the people who matter most.   If you're building something ambitious, this conversation will make you think more deeply about the kind of person you're becoming in the process.   Episode Breakdown: 00:00 Introduction 03:07 Early Challenges of Launching Groundfloor 05:55 The Cost of Being Early 08:10 Lessons from Republic Wireless 12:09 Personal Growth Through Leadership 14:45 Faith, Vulnerability, and Inner Work 16:48 How Company Culture Broke and Got Rebuilt 23:05 Big Goals, Ambition, and Opportunity Cost 30:59 Real-World Impact on Customers 34:02 Habits That Keep Brian Grounded   Links Connect with Brian Dally: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bdally/ Website: https://groundfloor.com/   Connect with Alex Raymond: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/afraymond/ Website: https://amplifyam.com/ HiveCast.fm is a proud sponsor of The Conscious Entrepreneur Podcast. Welcome back! This is the first ‘Man in the Mirror' of 2025, we're in March so I'm WAY too late to say ‘Happy New Year' to you, but I hope the year has got off to a great start. I'm delighted to be back with more new episodes, there's some amazing guests to come this season…My guest in episode 1 is Stuart Williams-Philp, who describes himself as a ‘Liberty veteran and retail survivor!' Stuart has been a sales specialist in the Ground Floor fragrance department at the world famous Liberty in London, UK for over 20 years. There can't be many people who know the retail space, the trends and most importantly, what the customer wants better than Stuart. I first ‘met' Stuart via his Instagram channel @Stubieblessed. If you aren't following him, you should do so immediately. It's a (rare) positive, joyful and fun account where he talks about his love of interiors, design, beauty and of course fragrance. Oh - and he also has a ‘Monday moan', so you can see what gets on his nerves each week! I subsequently met him IRL in the Liberty store and I can confirm he's just as friendly and fabulous in the flesh! Stuart mentioned the following products in his routine:Augustinus Bader - The Rich Creamhttps://www.libertylondon.com/uk/the-rich-cream-30ml-000725185.html#pos=2Aesop - Facial Cleanserhttps://www.libertylondon.com/uk/purifying-facial-cream-cleanser-100ml-304141.html#pos=34Sam McKnight - Shampoohttps://www.libertylondon.com/uk/rich-cleanse-nourishing-shampoo--250ml-000783331.html#pos=11Ultra Violette - SPF50https://www.libertylondon.com/uk/brands/u/ultra-violette/Escentric Molecules - Molecule 01https://www.libertylondon.com/uk/brands/u/ultra-violette/?algq=escentric%20molNew Notes - Latte di Cherryhttps://www.libertylondon.com/uk/brands/n/new-notes/You can find Liberty on Instagram at:https://www.instagram.com/LibertyLondon/Online at: https://www.libertylondon.com/Stuart is on Instagram at:https://www.instagram.com/stubieblessed/- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -You can ‘tip' me via the link below. I think that's the ultimate superpower because, in the end, the only minds we have control over changing are our own. The very best we could do for others is to inspire them. Now you have to ask the question, well, how do you inspire somebody? And I think that's done with love.Crowd investing offers a unique opportunity to shape the future while achieving financial goals. Paul Lovejoy, Principal Investment Advisor of Stakeholder Enterprise, is passionate about this transformative investment approach. His personal journey, marked by financial trauma during the 2008 crisis, led him to discover the power of social enterprises and crowdfund investing.Paul shared how his experiences inspired a shift in his career. “Through a dedication to practice personal development, I started to heal. And healing meant I needed to face my own past and my financial trauma,” he explained. This journey not only led him to confront his challenges but also to embrace a new way of investing. He described how platforms like SMBX and GroundFloor enable investors to support small businesses and local economies while earning returns.Paul's strategy emphasizes the importance of income-producing assets. “There's no greater way to build wealth than through income-producing assets,” he noted. By investing in offerings with regular income streams, such as short-term real estate loans on GroundFloor or local business notes via SMBX, investors can achieve steady returns while creating positive social impact.Paul also highlighted the broader implications of investment choices. “Where we place our capital really matters,” he said, urging investors to consider how their investments shape the world. His approach balances financial returns with a commitment to community empowerment, making impact crowdfunding both rewarding and sustainable. For those looking to fully integrate crowd investments into their portfolios, Paul advocates seeking professional guidance. “You don't want to go this alone,” he advised, stressing the importance of strategy and diversification.Today's episode underscores that impact crowdfunding is not just about funding businesses—it's about shaping a better future while achieving personal financial goals.tl;dr:* Paul Lovejoy shared his passion for investing, sparked by childhood curiosity and personal experiences.* Today's episode revealed Paul's transformative journey from financial trauma to embracing impact investing.* Paul highlighted peer-to-peer lending and Regulation Crowdfunding as tools for creating social and financial change.* Paul's approach emphasizes investing in income-producing assets to build wealth and sustain communities.* He advocates guiding and inspiring others with love, respect, and thoughtful questions to empower success. How to Develop Inspiring with Love As a SuperpowerPaul Lovejoy's superpower is the ability to inspire others through love, acceptance, and respect. By fostering an environment of understanding and encouragement, Paul helps people embrace challenges, explore new possibilities, and achieve their goals.Paul shared a touching story about his younger son, who aspired to join his school's basketball team despite lacking prior experience. Instead of offering advice, Paul asked thoughtful questions to guide his son to discover his own solutions. By encouraging self-reflection, Paul empowered his son to practice, gain confidence, and actively work toward his goal. Seeing his son practice with friends and an assistant coach underscored the transformative power of inspiration.Tips for Developing the Superpower:* Cultivate Acceptance and Respect: Create spaces where people feel valued for who they are.* Ask Thoughtful Questions: Guide others to discover their own paths rather than dictating solutions.* Let Go of Blame: Recognize and release anger or blame to open yourself to love and acceptance.* Embrace Humility: Focus on being the best version of yourself rather than trying to control others.By following Paul's example and advice, you can make inspiring with love a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfilePaul Lovejoy (he/him):Principal Investment Advisor, Stakeholder EnterpriseAbout Stakeholder Enterprise: Stakeholder Enterprise is a Registered Investment Advisory firm and home of the Crowd Investor Program, a three-part initiative to ethically build wealth through private market crowd investing. For the next 8 years, he stayed in the real estate industry suffering in silence. In 2016, he began practicing personal development and discovered that personal finance has more to do with personal growth than actual finance. His journey of personal development led him to a career in wealth strategy. In this episode of the HyperFast Agent Show, Dan Lesniak delves into the question of whether being part of a ground floor opportunity truly offers better prospects for real estate agents. Using eXp Realty as a case study, he argues that while the appeal of joining a new venture is tempting, the advantages of aligning with an established, profitable, and scalable company are far greater. Dan highlights eXp Realty's impressive growth to over 85,000 agents across 24 countries, its proven revenue-sharing model, and the stability it offers compared to newer, unproven companies that may face profitability challenges or potential failure.   Do you want to partner with Billion Dollar Agents and top growth leaders at eXp realty? On this episode of the Crazy Wisdom Podcast, Stewart Alsop is joined by ~tiller-tolbus to explore his three current projects: Red Horizon, Sen Chain, and Aegean. The conversation navigates through the intricacies of Urbit, touching on the common threads that bind these ventures together. Tiller shares insights into how Red Horizon is making Urbit more accessible, how Sen Chain offers a unique blockchain integration, and how Aegean envisions a new kind of browsing experience within the Urbit namespace. For more details on Tiller's work, you can connect with him on Urbit at tiller tolbus, or follow him on Twitter at @tiller_tolbus. Unlike the fragmented nature of traditional computing systems, where apps often do not work well together, Urbit aims to allow disinterested parties to build components that organically fit together, reducing the need for direct collaboration and communication overhead among developers.Red Horizon's Role in Making Urbit Accessible: Red Horizon is highlighted as a crucial project for making Urbit more accessible to users. By providing a hosting solution that allows users to run their Urbit instances efficiently and affordably, Red Horizon is paving the way for broader adoption of the platform. Tiller emphasizes that this accessibility is key to the future success of Urbit as a viable alternative to centralized cloud services. The Importance of Shrubbery in App Development: Tiller introduces the concept of Shrubbery, an application design system that standardizes how data is organized and accessed within Urbit. This standardization makes it easier for different apps to interoperate, addressing one of the major challenges in current app development on the platform. Shrubbery represents a step toward making Urbit a more developer-friendly environment, potentially leading to more innovative and cohesive applications.Aegean's Vision for a New Browsing Experience: Aegean is described as a project that aims to redefine how users interact with the Urbit network. By conceptualizing a browser that navigates the Urbit namespace, Aegean seeks to create a more intuitive and user-friendly way to access and share content on the network. This project highlights Urbit's potential to offer a fundamentally different internet experience, one that emphasizes ownership and control over personal data. The Philosophical Foundation of Urbit: The conversation delves into the philosophical motivations behind Urbit's development, particularly the desire to create a computing system that is both mathematically elegant and practically robust. Tiller and Stewart discuss the importance of having a foundational "ground floor" for software development, one that is stable, clean, and designed to last. This reflects a broader idealistic vision for computing that prioritizes long-term sustainability over short-term fixes.Challenges and Potential of Ares in Urbit's Evolution: Ares is identified as a critical upcoming project that could transform Urbit from what Tiller calls a "toy" into a fully-fledged computing platform. By addressing current limitations, such as the small data storage capacity, Ares promises to enhance the performance and capabilities of Urbit, making it a more serious contender in the world of personal computing. However, the timeline for Ares' completion remains uncertain, reflecting the complexity of such a transformative project. The Role of Digital Sovereignty in the Future of Technology: Throughout the episode, there is a recurring theme of digital sovereignty—empowering individuals to have full control over their data and computing resources. Urbit is positioned as a response to the increasing centralization of digital services by major corporations, offering an alternative that prioritizes user autonomy and privacy. This emphasis on sovereignty is seen as both a philosophical stance and a practical solution to the challenges posed by today's internet infrastructure.

In this episode Stories from the River, host Charlie Malouf welcomes back April Todd, Home Furnishings Expert & Sales Manager, for the second part of their conversation. April shares heartfelt reflections on her career and the deep sense of gratitude and fulfillment she derives from working for the River, inviting others to experience what she describes as home. Her positive influence on her community and colleagues is evident as they laud her for her kindness, generosity, and leadership. She talks about the various company events she has attended, such as soirees, summits, and purpose-driven gatherings that have filled her cup and provided her with a sense of feeling appreciated as well as renewed her spirit and mindset with inspiration and motivation.  April recounts being particularly touched by an impactful speech from Inky Johnson at Broad River's Leadership Summit in August 2018 when the Company's purpose statement ("Furnishing Life's Best Memories.") was unveiled.  She also discusses the positive impact of the Company's annual themes, which aid in centering and driving the team's focus. She highlights Broad River's commitment to fostering real human connections, standing out as a top workplace in the furniture industry due to its culture and treatment of its Memory Makers. April candidly discusses her professional journey, including how she sets sales goals that spur her to push her performance to new heights, using stories of working diligently through holiday seasons at the end of the year as examples. Her narrative also includes the personal sacrifices she's made, and she openly discusses how she's dealt with grief that she's had over the years (and how she's been able to perform at work amidst the personal struggles at home), including the fortitude she's shown during family struggles such as her husband's cancer diagnosis, and her father's passing following a terminal diagnosis.  April's generous spirit and heart of gold extend beyond work as she recounts how she's used her annual jackpot bonuses to support her community, from helping dozens of families with Christmas gifts during the holidays to giving away a car and even to aiding a homeless man.  In offering advice she would offer to new hires on the sales floor, she stresses the importance of a positive mindset, hard work, and the pursuit of continuous improvement. Even though April has been a perennial Million Dollar Memory Maker and has achieved the top levels of sales success at the Company, she has not allowed herself to become complacent towards her craft.  She has personified personal excellence and a drive to always learn and seek opportunities to improve.  Her professional mindset and serious approach to craft are exemplary examples to others on the sales floor. At Broad River Retail, there's a focus on people, innovation, and pushing boundaries, with initiatives to recognize and engage employees. Despite the fast-paced growth and the corporate backdrop, April enjoys the warm culture and the surprising close-knit feel within the Company that April believes is the same as it was when she began even though the Company has grown so much over the years.. April's story is a profound blend of personal resilience, Company pride, continual self-reflection, and the faithful belief in overcoming adversity and achieving greatness. In this episode of Stories from the River, host Charlie Malouf welcomes April Todd, Home Furnishings Expert & Sales Manager, about her journey in the home furnishings industry and her role as a sales manager and home furnishings expert, and her path to being a Million Dolllar Memory Maker repeatedly year after year (after being in the industry for over 12 years).  April has had an extensive career with Ashley, which started when she was 19, and although initially intended as a temporary job, has turned into a lifelong journey. Despite taking a break from Ashley to focus more on being a mother for her young son with a stint at Haverty's, she returned to the company with renewed vigor in 2017, leading her to regularly achieve million-dollar sales. Her persistence and motivation, alongside her role as a leader who emphasizes team success and empowerment, are also important themes throughout April's career. She also opened up about her previous challenges, such as working as a single mother and pursuing further education, and how her EMT training once played a crucial role in assisting a colleague.  April discusses the importance of compassion in customer interactions, as even leaders can find it challenging to handle people who may react differently. She shares her transition from a sales manager leading the sleep business to a sales manager overseeing the finance business, a move that showcases her passion for challenges and deal-making. April and Charlie also reminisce about the history and development of the original Anderson store, now relocated to a new, brighter, and more prominent location, which faced initial doubts but resulted in joy and satisfaction upon its completion. April especially appreciates the new store's real mattress gallery and outlet, which have been warmly received by the customers. The conversation with April is just getting started! We all start somewhere. For these two IT professionals, the ground floor is where they found their way into the tech industry. When you don't know how to navigate a career in technology, it pays to be flexible. Because as Luis Martin and Victor Santiago would learn, where someone begins isn't necessarily where they end up.
