Toni Laites made history last year as the first American to win Love Island, but her journey to the villa was anything but ordinary. Discovered in Las Vegas working as a cabana girl by the show's creative director, Toni was persuaded to fly 6,000 miles to Mallorca. The rest, as they say, is history. But you don't need to be a Love Island superfan to love this episode. Toni is funny, emotionally intelligent and disarmingly honest. She opens up about living with the chronic illness Ulcerative Colitis, her pattern of choosing the wrong men in the past, working through anxious attachment and the hard-won strength it takes to forgive yourself. This is a conversation about resilience, self-awareness and what it really means to back yourself - even when the odds (and the public vote) are against you. ✨ IN THIS EPISODE: 03:18 Vegas Sales to Villa Casting 05:36 Saying Yes to Love Island 07:21 Life Inside the Villa 08:33 Votes, Outcasts and Forgiveness 10:57 The Big Three Friendship 14:18 Health Scare and Ulcerative Colitis 28:10 Tourist In London 28:43 Toxic Dating Patterns 32:22 Pressure On Her Relationship 34:57 Fame And Social Media 37:34 Family And Attachment 44:28 Self Criticism And Hate 49:44 Plan For The Future

Royal favourites, we want your voice notes in our new miniseries on historical failures. Look out for Producer Al's callout post on patreon.com/thisishistory.  It's there where you can listen to this week's bonus episode, where Dan discusses what likely triggered Henry VI's descent into silence, while he also gives a primer on England's warring noble families: the Nevilles, Percys, and Courtenays.  Henry VI isn't responding to anyone. Not to his physician, nor to his newborn son, Prince Edward. He's just inert, catatonic.  If the king's health is said to be a mirror of the health of the realm, then England's in big trouble (which it is). The Hundred Years' War is on the verge of being decisively over in France's favour. England has lost Gascony, Normandy, and Maine, with only the small Garrison at Calais left.  This a full-blown crisis that is usually left to the king to solve, but instead, Parliament decides to make Richard Duke of York the Protector of the realm — angering Queen Margaret and York's nemesis, Edmund Duke of Somerset.   Then something remarkable happens: Henry wakes up. – A Sony Music Entertainment production.  Find more great podcasts from Sony Music Entertainment at sonymusic.com/podcasts  To bring your brand to life in this podcast, email podcastadsales@sonymusic.com  Learn more about your ad choices.  Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices  – Written and presented by Dan Jones Producer - Alan Weedon Senior Producer - Dominic Tyerman Executive Producer - Simon Poole  Production Manager - Jen Mistri  Production coordinator - Eric Ryan  Mixing - Amber Devereux Head of content - Chris Skinner Learn more about your ad choices. Fertility Myths vs Facts: Egg Freezing, IVF, & What Every Woman Should Know

Fertility is one of those topics that's either avoided entirely—or turned into a fear-fueled spiral online. So we're cutting through the noise. Molly and Emese sit down with Dr. Lucky Sekhon (reproductive endocrinologist and author of The Lucky Egg) for a clear, science-backed conversation about what every woman deserves to understand: how fertility actually works, what's myth vs. fact, and what to do if you're feeling overwhelmed, behind, or panicked by the “biological clock” narrative. We get into the truths behind AMH and ovarian reserve, egg quality vs. egg quantity, and the real-world decision making around egg freezing—including the best age window, what the process really feels like, and why it's not a guarantee, but can be a powerful option. Dr. Lucky also breaks down how far IVF has come—why success rates have improved, how genetic testing can lower miscarriage risk, and we debunk the biggest fears we keep hearing.   If you're in your 20s thinking ahead, in your 30s asking “what now?”, or in your 40s trying to stay hopeful, this episode is your no-shame, no-gatekeeping fertility roadmap—built on facts, compassion, and the truth that you're not a statistic. But it can also whisper that we are only as good as our latest achievement - and these two brilliant former How to Fail guests explore what it really means to live a driven life. Gillian Anderson reflects on her lifelong drive to prove herself, the guilt she feels when stepping back from work and the tension between motherhood and a demanding career. Munroe Bergdorf shares how rejection and gatekeeping in fashion shaped her ambition. Once treated as a token gesture, she has become a leading voice for representation, speaking openly about resilience, self‑worth and creating space for others to follow. An episode about striving and self‑belief – and about whether ambition truly supports us, or whether we end up chasing it at our own expense. In celebration of Pixar's 40th anniversary, Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter is our special guest this week. Few filmmakers have a style as bold, romantic and unmistakable as Baz Luhrmann. From his breakout debut Strictly Ballroom to the glittering spectacle of The Great Gatsby starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and the fever-dream energy of Elvis, Luhrmann has built a career on transforming familiar stories into cinematic events. In this episode, he takes us inside one of his most iconic creative decisions: the unforgettable fish tank scene in his 1996 adaptation of Romeo + Juliet - and reveals how that moment came to life. We also explore his latest project, EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert, a return to Elvis Presley through newly uncovered footage from the legendary Las Vegas residency. Beyond the films, Luhrmann reflects on the journey that shaped him. Raised in Herons Creek, a tiny rural town in New South Wales, Australia, he grew up surrounded by performance and storytelling: his father ran a quirky petrol station and cinema, while his mother owned a dress shop and taught ballroom dancing. We discuss the setbacks that tested him, his unconventional audition process, his enduring creative partnership with his wife and the viral TikTok moment that sent the internet into a frenzy. It's a welcome addition to what remains of a vanishingly thin Plantagenet dynasty.  Aside from Henry, this is the first royal birth in 50 years.  The celebrations don't last long. As 1453 rolls on, two prominent nobles are fighting to rule on behalf of an impotent king. Edmund Beaufort, Duke of Somerset is the king's favourite… but he's also the man who lost Normandy. At his heels is Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York, a man feared by the nobility but loved by England's increasingly frustrated populace.  The realm will soon have to make a stark choice, because a catastrophic blow to English power is imminent. Rylan Clark then takes us back to his childhood, where he opens up about growing up feeling different, navigating his sexuality and surviving bullying, which left him with a fractured skull. Rylan's resilience is a reminder that truly owning who we are not only empowers us, but also shapes the individuals we are meant to become. I don't say that lightly - I've had some amazing guests - but there's something about how Jennette puts the female experience into words that I find truly electrifying. Raised Mormon in Orange County, Jennette was just six when her mother decided she would become an actor. What followed was a difficult, abusive childhood, which she chronicled with unflinching honesty in her 2022 memoir, I'm Glad My Mom Died - a book that spent more than 90 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Her new novel, Half His Age, follows 17-year-old Waldo as she embarks on an affair with her 40-year-old creative writing teacher. It's a startling, powerful story about discomfort, agency and self-determination and it became a Sunday Times Number One bestseller in its first week! In this episode, we talk about her upbringing, her experience of disordered eating, the writing process and the grounding partner she's been with for nine years (who I was lucky enough to meet). We get into what's actually worth splurging on and where saving makes sense, from coats, bags, denim, and shoes to the everyday pieces you reach for over and over again. There's plenty of talk about designer outlet wins, high–low dressing, airport outfits, Sambas, barrel jeans, athleisure fatigue, and the trends we're loving and the ones we're ready to move on from. We also dive into how to get dressed when winter feels endless and your closet suddenly feels uninspiring. From layering and texture to scarves, winter whites, and the idea of dopamine dressing, we break down what actually helps you feel more put-together without chasing every trend or buying an entirely new wardrobe. Along the way, we answer your questions on everything from skinny jeans and white shoes to whether athleisure belongs outside the gym and which bags feel timeless versus overplayed. It's candid, opinionated, and exactly the kind of fashion conversation we'd be having if you were sitting with us. Families are fascinating: how those first bonds shape our understanding of love, security and ourselves. In this episode, we revisit episodes with Bella Freud and Danny Dyer, who each open up about the simultaneous beauty and complexity of family life. Bella Freud, speaks about losing both of her parents to cancer within a week. As the great granddaughter of Sigmund Freud and the eldest sibling, she reflects on a complex childhood, the responsibilities she carried and how grief reshaped her sense of identity. Secondly, we hear from Danny Dyer, who shares what it was like growing up on a council estate with a single mother. He discusses the shock of discovering his father had another family and how the absence of love in his early years shaped the devoted parent he is today. Family dynamics can feel messy and taboo, but I hope this episode offers reassurance, validation and insight into the ties that form us first and stay with us for life. Bodices will be ripped in this week's Take, because we're talking Wuthering Heights. Emerald Fennell heads to the wild and windy moors for a cinematic storm of obsession, repression, lots of rain and, well… let's just say nobody's getting this worked up about the weather alone. Controversially starring Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff and Margot Robbie as Catherine, it's already dividing the critics, so where does Mark stand? The lascivious literary adaptation's director is our guest this week. She joins Simon to talk about the story's sensuality, toxicity, and how much glaring, breathing, and storm-lashed longing is too much glaring, breathing, and storm-lashed longing? She tells us how it felt to realise her teenage dream of bringing her vision for this classic to the screen, and why its tale of love, revenge, and emotional chaos still gets pulses racing. Plus reviews of three more of the week's cinematic offerings. There's Crime 101, Bart Layton's sleek thriller pairing Chris Hemsworth's precision jewel thief with Mark Ruffalo's relentlessly pursuing detective, and proving once again that nobody in LA should ever relax. Whistle brings supernatural horror and the world's worst extracurricular activity, as students discover that cursed ancient Aztec artefacts are best left well alone. And Little Amélie offers something altogether gentler — an animated adaptation of Amélie Nothomb's autobiographical story of childhood, identity, and wonder. All this, plus the box office top 10, a trip to the dizziest heights of humour in the Laughter Lift, and the customary digressions and delights of another top Take. 00:00:00 Show starts 00:08:53 Crime 101 review 00:18:33 Box Office Top 10 00:32:14 Emerald Fennell interview 00:46:27 Wuthering Heights review 01:00:06 Laughter Lift 01:03:11 Little Amelie review 01:08:49 Whistle review You can contact the show by emailing correspondence@kermodeandmayo.com or you can find us on social media, @KermodeandMayo Please take our survey and help shape the future of our show: https://www.kermodeandmayo.com/survey EXCLUSIVE NordVPN Deal ➼ https://nordvpn.com/take Try it risk-free now with a 30-day money-back guarantee! Royal favourites, we want your voice notes in our new miniseries on historical failures. Look out for Producer Al's callout post on patreon.com/thisishistory   Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester — Henry V's last surviving brother — is lost in delusion. He still believes England can somehow hold its possessions in France, even as its soldiers are exhausted, its treasury is drained, and its enemies grow stronger by the day. Across the Channel, King Charles VII of France hardly needs to fight; he simply needs to wait for England to collapse under the weight of its own war. But in Westminster, reality is catching up. William de la Pole, Henry VI's most trusted advisor, summons a special parliament to confront the crisis head‑on — a moment designed to force the kingdom, and Humphrey himself, to face the truth. What happens next delivers the biggest shock of Humphrey's political life, sending ripples through the court and reshaping England's future. We're joined by Senada Greca — strength coach, founder of WeRise, and yes, Kim Kardashian's personal trainer — to break down what actually works when it comes to fitness, consistency, and building a body you feel strong in (not punished by). Because by February, most people aren't “lazy” — they're just burned out from setting unrealistic goals and trying to do too much too fast. We talk about why so many women fall off their routines, how to build discipline when you don't feel motivated, and the simple strategy shift that changes everything: start smaller than you think, stay consistent, and let it build. Senada shares her method for sustainable strength training (even if you only have 30 minutes), what to prioritize in a week, and why lifting weights won't make you bulky — it will make you healthier, stronger, and more confident. If you've been feeling like you can't stay consistent, you don't know where to start, or you're tired of starting over — this episode will make you feel capable again.  A Sony Music Entertainment production.  Find more great podcasts from Sony Music Entertainment at sonymusic.com/podcasts and follow us at @sonypodcasts  To bring your brand to life in this podcast, email podcastadsales@sonymusic.com Learn more about your ad choices. We're joined by psychologist, behavioral scientist, and author Dr. Zelana Montminy, whose work focuses on resilience, focus, and what it actually takes to feel grounded in a world that constantly pulls at our attention. And no — this isn't about productivity hacks or doing more. It's about coming back to yourself. We talk about why so many women are living in low-grade burnout without realizing it, how multitasking and being “always available” is quietly frying our nervous systems, and why distraction isn't just a kids' problem — it's an adult epidemic.  Dr. Zelana breaks down how focus isn't about grinding or optimizing — it's about presence and intention. We get into simple, realistic shifts that actually help: micro moments of calm, rethinking your relationship with your phone, why silence matters more than you think, and how modeling regulation (not perfection) changes everything — especially for our kids. If you've ever thought, Why can't I focus anymore? Why am I so tired? Why does everything feel urgent? — this episode will leave you feeling seen, understood, and a little more grounded by the time it ends. Owen Tudor is running out of time. With Queen Mother Catherine de Valois dead, their once‑secret marriage — and the Tudor bloodline it produced — is suddenly exposed. The English court is alarmed, the line of royal succession is in question, and powerful enemies are closing in. But political panic is only the beginning. When Eleanor Cobham is accused of witchcraft and plotting against King Henry VI, England is convulsed by one of the most explosive scandals of the 15th century. Accusations of sorcery, prophecies of regicide, and ruthless factional battles collide at the heart of the medieval court. Power, prophecy, and the birth of the Tudor dynasty meet head‑on in this gripping chapter of medieval English history — as paranoia, ambition and fear push a fragile kingdom toward chaos. – Want to delve deeper? Today's episode is a little different. Because lately we've been feeling it: the shift into your 40s and 50s is real. Friendships change. Your body changes. Your kids grow up overnight. And somehow you're expected to keep up with all of it while also looking cute, staying calm, and being everyone's emotional support system. So we're zooming out and having the unfiltered conversation about what it actually feels like to grow up in this stage of life — from navigating adult friendships (and learning how to set boundaries without guilt), to dealing with jealousy, comparison, and social media dynamics that no one talks about… but everyone feels. We get into how to maintain close friendships when everyone is busy with work and kids, why your standards shift as you get older, and the “hard truth” that not everyone is meant to come with you into every season. And because it wouldn't be Lipstick on the Rim without some beauty + body talk, we're also sharing what's helped us feel more confident as we age. Fame isn't always limousines, five star hotels, champagne and private jets. I find this topic totally fascinating and these two past How to Fail guests give us a glimpse behind the curtain as to what becoming famous at a young age really means. Shania Twain takes us back to her childhood, singing late nights in smoke-filled bars, growing up far too fast and without real control over her own life. She speaks movingly about the emotional cost of starting so young. Charlotte Church reflects on how early fame shaped - and at times restricted – her creative freedom, the doors that were closed to her by the industry and the advice she would give her younger self now.
