In this episode we go back to the beginning. What is NATO? What challenges has NATO faced in the past? How are these similar or different to today's issues? Why is NATO important for US national security? Why should Americans care about the security of Europe? Former NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, Ambassador Alexander Vershbow, and Seth Johnston join Rick to explain NATO's history, its purpose, and its evolution over the past seven decades. The Ties That Bind: NATO at 75 and Beyond is a five part series examining the past, present, and futur of NATO.For access to the full interviews and more, subscribe to our newsletter.
As tensions grow in Eastern Europe, the role of NATO is crucial for our understanding of the reaction of the West to Russia's troop build-up at the Ukrainian borders. NATO has undergone significant changes since it was founded more than 70 years ago when twelve countries came together to, as a British diplomat famously put it, “keep the Americans in, the Russians out, and the Germans down.” Today, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization has almost thirty members and its missions have changed significantly. In this episode of the HCA podcast, Anja Schüler and Seth Johnston take a look at these changes in NATO's organization and strategy. Seth Johnston is assistant professor in the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. As a scholar-practitioner, he also has served in the Pentagon and the State Department as well as in many multinational overseas missions.
As the No. 2 Texas Longhorns enter College World Series as the highest remaining national seed, thoughts turn to the thrilling 2005 season when the Horns swept through the field to capture the program's sixth championship. Four players from the late Augie Garrido's final national champion — Buck Cody, Seth Johnston, Kyle McCulloch and Drew Stubbs — join the On Second Thought podcast for a special roundtable with hosts Cedric Golden and Kirk Bohls to reflect on that incredible title run while giving their thoughts on what it will take for the 2021 Longhorns to return the program to the winner's circle, Also, Kansas State running back Deuce Vaughn — a former Cedar Ridge HS star — calls in to rep the Wildcats, who come in at No. 7 on OST's preseason Big 12 football poll.
In this edition of the podcast, SOSH Faculty Alumni Dr. Seth Johnston sits down to talk with us about the history and future of NATO: How did an organization originally intended as a defense alliance against Germany and the Soviet Union morph into a major player in Afghanistan? How has it evolved over time to remain relevant and important in international affairs? In what ways must NATO continue to adapt in order to counteract emerging threats in new domains such as cyberspace? We ask these questions and more. Want to know what college recruiters are looking for in their athletes? Should you specialize in a sport at a young each to reach that level? The State University of New York College at Brockport has been a powerhouse in the Division III Men's Basketball scene for years. Their fast-paced style of play has produced 9 conference championship teams and several appearances in the NCAA Division III Championship tournament. One of those appearances was in the 2006-2007 season where they reached the Elite 8, and Seth and Joe were both players on that team. This 2019-2020 season was on track to be one of their best ever with a 26-3 record, and ranking as high as 11th on D3HOOPS.com. Just as they reached the Sweet Sixteen in the tournament, their season was cut short by the coronavirus. Seth Johnston and Joe Clarke are both long-time coaches on staff, alongside Head Coach Greg Dunne. They share the recruiting process used by Brockport, and the types of players they are looking for in their program. They also stress the importance of unstructured play during childhood, and the importance of becoming a well-rounded athlete versus specializing in one sport while growing up. This is a great episode for students looking to play a sport in college, parents looking for help on guiding their kids in sports, and fellow coaches at any level looking to gain some insight on some of the behind the scenes works of an excellent program.Episode Timeline:1:30 - Rapid fire questions8:10 - 2019-2020 Season9:10 - Transition From Player to Coach14:30 - Seth’s Story20:00 - Recruiting28:15 - Bigger, Faster, Stronger33:15 - Importance of Unstructured Play40:00 - Building Toughness Through Play41:30 - Why Brockport?Website:https://gobrockport.com/sports/mens-basketballInstagram:@brockport_mbbMOVRS Website:http://www.movrs.orgMOVRS Instagram:@wermovrsSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/movrs)
