Health challenges, unfortunately, tend to come with age. Gardening is a popular retirement hobby but may require a new approach as we age. Adaptive Gardening means making small changes to accommodate a gardener's physical needs. This approach may help us continue to enjoy this hobby. However, realistically, adaptive gardening applies to gardeners at any age. Think about gardening smarter, not harder. Examples of some adaptations might include gardening in raised beds, containers, or soft-sided bags. Different gardening tools might also help in the care of plants and even reduce the chance of injury. For example, a balanced watering jug with a wide handle might lessen the tightness of the grip needed to carry it. Once you understand some adaptive considerations, you can get creative implementing gardening techniques. Three areas typically require some form of adaptation: Muscles and Joints, Cardiovascular and Cardiopulmonary issues,, Visual and Memory problems. Special tools can make a big difference to help with some of these issues. But the selection of plants can also help. For example, woody plants are easier to care for and don't require the same amount of work as annuals and perennials. Air Plants are a great option indoors. Life long marketer and gardener, Duane Pancoast, has helped tree, landscape, and lawn care businesses market their services. His passion for gardening started when he studied Landscape Architecture at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, As mobility restrictions began taking their toll on his own gardening abilities, he decided to share his experience with other senior gardeners, including how he 'adapted'. His blog and book "The Geriatric Gardener 2.0" provide a wealth of information that might be helpful to you too. He joins the Nature Calls: Conversations from the Hudson Valley podcast team to share his insights. The conversation highlights the significance of conservation efforts and the need for responsible hunting to ensure the future of waterfowl populations. Dr. Mike also shares his insights on duck hunting ethics, memorable hunting stories, and the future of his podcast. He has lived and hunted in multiple states, gaining a deep understanding of different duck cultures. The Fall Weather podcast was created to provide forecasts for duck migration based on scientific models. Duck migration predictions rely on weather variables, including temperature and snow cover. The accuracy of migration predictions can significantly enhance hunting success rates. Duck populations fluctuate, and current trends show a decline that needs attention. Conservation efforts, such as the farm bill, are crucial for maintaining healthy duck populations. Ethics in duck hunting are essential, focusing on respect for fellow hunters and the environment. The culture of hunting should prioritize learning and understanding over competition and flashy gear. Responsible hunting practices can help sustain duck populations and improve the overall hunting experience. Duck hunting requires respect for the birds and the environment. Mentorship is crucial for the younger generation of hunters. Memorable hunting stories often come with valuable lessons. Conservation efforts are essential for maintaining healthy waterfowl populations. The Fowl Weather Podcast aims to educate and entertain listeners about waterfowl hunting. Hunting experiences are often defined by a few memorable days rather than the entire season. Ethics in hunting include making clean kills and utilizing the harvested birds. Wetland consulting is a growing aspect of Dr. Mike's work. Cooking and sharing meals from harvested game fosters community and appreciation for the hunt. The beauty of nature enhances the hunting experience, making it unforgettable. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Today's conversation is with Bonnie Gintis, DO Bonnie lives in in northern Vermont. She has taught worldwide, addressing physicians and all people interested in exploring embodiment. She retired from Osteopathic private practice in 2009 and now devotes herself to teaching, writing, and exploring new ways to foster health and wellbeing. She is the author of Engaging The Movement Of Life: Exploring Health And Embodiment Through Osteopathy And Continuum. She is a 1986 graduate of New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she has also taught Osteopathic Principles and Practice. She has been a faculty member with the Sutherland Cranial Teaching Foundation, the American Academy of Osteopathy, the European School of Osteopathy, The German Academy for Osteopathic Medicine, and Jim Jealous, DO. Bonnie has been a board member, faculty member and Course Director for The Osteopathic Cranial Academy, and was honored with Fellowship in the Osteopathic Cranial Academy (FCA) in 2015. Bonnie studied Continuum extensively with Emilie Conrad and taught in collaboration with her from 1997 until the time of her death in 2014. She was authorized by Emilie to teach Continuum, and now teaches a synthesis of all her areas of exploration and expertise. She has had more than 50 years of meditation practice, trained to be a teacher of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and has explored many approaches to mindfulness within and outside of Buddhist traditions. Bonnie's innovative approach combines Osteopathy, Continuum's fluid movement exploration, and mindfulness, expanding the possibilities for experiencing health and embodiment and allowing for the development of perceptual skills to more deeply care for ourselves and others. https://osteopathyunplugged.com/ https://bonniegintis.com/ In today's talk discussed about what Osteopathy and Continuum are. We shared perspective on the importance of natural movement, meditation, and a holistic approach in professional practices. We also discussed ways to connect with Bonnie's work, including her wonderful book and her upcoming teaching schedule including a retreat at Kripalu in October. There was really so much territory we could cover her and I felt Bonnie did a great job to just scratch the surface without opening up too many wormholes to go down, as the topics are rather vast topics as we explore them more. I would highly recommend her book and her podcast to get a deeper sense into what Osteopathy and Continuum can be. They are practices which I am personally still so green about but have touched and changed me in profound ways. I hope if they can be supportive for you that you too can get more information to explore your inner workings through these ways of being. If you are enjoying and getting something out of these talks, we'd appreciate it if you would leave a positive review of the podcast and subscribe to it through the platform of your choice. He studied science as an undergraduate at the Penn State University graduating with honors. He was awarded one of six national scholarships for optometry from the US Air Force. He served his country with distinction. He finished his doctoral work at the State University of New York College of Optometry. He completed fellowships in Synotic Optometry and Vision Therapy. He is a sought-after guest speaker for various groups on a local, national, and international level. All too often, children and adults are told that their eyes are healthy, they have 20/20 eyesight or their glasses are the correct power, and there is nothing else to be done. They are told that their reading issues are inborn dyslexia and other reductionistic diagnosis. At The Developmental Vision Center, Dr. Bugaiski looks beyond 20/20 eyesight. His team is there to treat the person, not just their eyes. Vision therapy is a program of progressive visual activities performed under doctor supervision, individualized by a vision therapist to fit the needs of each patient. The American Chestnut Foundation has long supported a controversial plan to release genetically engineered chestnut trees into the wild. The Tree was being developed by the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF). But now poor performance in field trials and the revelation that researchers had even been field testing the wrong tree prompted The American Chestnut Foundation to pull its support for the GE Tree. The American Chestnut Foundation has also called for SUNY-ESF to pull its application before the United States Department of Agriculture for deregulation of the tree.On this episode of Breaking Green, we spoke with Anne Petermann. Petermann co- founded Global Justice Ecology Project in 2003. She is the international coordinator of the Campaign to STOP GE Trees, which she also co founded. Petermann is a founding board member of the Will Miller Social Justice Lecture Series. She has been involved in movements for forest protection and indigenous rights since 1991, and the international and national climate justice movements since 2004. She participated in the founding of the Durban group for climate justice in 2004, in Durban, South Africa, and Climate Justice Now in 2007 at the Bali Indonesia UN climate conference. Anne Petermann was adopted as an honorary member of the St. Francis- Sokoki band of the Abenaki in 1992 for her work in support of their struggle for state recognition. In 2000, she received the wild nature award for activist of the year. We will also talk with Dr. Donald Davis, author of the American Chestnut: an environmental history. His exhaustive book explores how the American Chestnut Tree has shaped history as well as the cultural and environmental significance of the once ubiquitous tree. He also calls the story of the American Chestnut, a cautionary tale of unintended consequences, and criticizes plans to conduct a massive and irreversible experiment by releasing genetically engineered American chestnuts into the wild. Davis is an independent scholar, author and former Fulbright fellow. He has authored or edited seven books. His book, Where There are Mountains: an environmental history of the southern Appalachians, won the prestigious Philip D. Reed environmental writing award. Note: The first 30 seconds had a technology glitch so it is on 2x speed and then it becomes normal…..sorry! Over the next few months, Dean's Chat will be providing bonus episodes interviewing students from the Schools and Colleges of Podiatric Medicine. This week we are joined by three students from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM); Karan Sharma, Tube Azam, and Ronald Baraga Delannoy. Karan is representing the Class of 2024, Tuba represents the Class of 2026 and Ronal represents the Class of 2025. All represent the American Podiatric Medical Students Association (APMSA) within NYCPM. Join our discussions each week on the podiatric journey our students are embarking on at the various schools. Students share their path to discovering podiatric medicine, to applying to what is now eleven schools and colleges of podiatric medicine, to the first and second year of didactics, Boards Part 1 and 2, and clinical experiences and opportunities. We do some professor shout-outs and discuss student services, extracurricular activities, and student life at each school. In this episode of Dean's Chat, the students share their educational experiences and offer insights for prospective students considering attending the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. The students discuss the importance of staying connected to the outside world and being informed about current events, especially while being in school. They acknowledge that it is easy to become solely focused on exams and academic responsibilities, but stress the need to have a broader perspective and connection to the world beyond the school environment. One of the students highlights the incredible opportunity of living in New York City and how it engages them, as there is always something to do. They emphasize the importance of remembering that there is a whole world outside of the academic bubble. The episode also provides advice for maintaining academic success. Ronald suggests staying consistent and developing a routine, even when not feeling motivated to study. He emphasizes the importance of doing things that may not be enjoyable, as it helps build discipline. Ronald suggests treating academics like a marathon rather than a sprint and getting used to studying even when not feeling motivated. He recommends starting with just a few minutes a day and gradually increasing the time. Karen echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the challenge of doing a little bit every day but also highlighting its effectiveness. She suggests changing topics if boredom arises but consistently dedicating time to studying. She also mentions the value of having a supportive community, sharing her experience of receiving tutoring from a senior student. Tube also emphasizes the importance of staying on top of lectures and studying consistently. They advise against skipping a day of studying and always staying on top of lectures, as it greatly contributes to academic success. https://www.nycpm.edu/ Dean's Chat Website Dean's Chat Episodes Dean's Chat Blog Why Podiatric Medicine? Did you know that how you use your eyesight, even if you have 20/20 vision, can have a material impact on your mental performance ? According to holistic optometrist, Jerry Wintrob, most of us can benefit from “seeing” better. As humans we have a tendency to overuse our eyes, inhibiting learning and overall mental performance. In this episode, we go into detail on the significant role that our eyesight can play on impacting our overall well being. In addition to Jerry sharing about how he uses sound and light to help his patients improve their eyesight, he provides practical at-home techniques that you can start utilizing today to improve your own eyesight. Referenced Links: https://www.holisticeyecare.com/ Biography: Dr. Jerry Wintrob is a holistic optometrist who has been in private practice for over 30 years. Whereas Traditional eye care focuses on treating symptoms through ever increasing prescriptions, Dr. Wintrob's practice uses many forms of holistic medicine (including, you know it, light and sound) to identify and treat the root causes of symptoms. Dr. Wintrob believes that a vital aspect of vision is the relationship between the mind and body, meaning that emotional problems can manifest in visual symptoms, which we will be discussing in greater detail in today's interview. Dr. Wintrob received his Doctorate in Optometry from the State University of New York College of Optometry in 1983 and continues to see patients today through his private practice based in New York. In this episode, Dr. Trepal shares his journey to becoming a Dean and his passion for podiatric medicine. Dr. Trepal also talks about his upbringing in New York City and his hope for his own children to stay close by. Tune in to hear this insightful conversation about all things podiatric medicine. The episode delves into the evolution and growing respect of the podiatry profession, attributing its success to hard work, innovation, and recognition. A key factor in achieving this recognition has been the improvement of podiatry curriculum in colleges. Additionally, the presence of experienced podiatrists who have worked in hospitals and developed residencies has played a significant role in gaining respect for the profession. Podiatrists have showcased their capabilities and earned privileges at hospitals, leading to the establishment of residency programs. The inclusion of podiatry under Medicare as a physician and the reimbursement of podiatric residencies at the same rate as other medical specialties has further solidified the profession's standing. The episode also highlights the importance of positive interactions with podiatrists in attracting more individuals to pursue a career in the profession. Many people who have considered podiatry as a career have had personal experiences with podiatrists, such as receiving treatment for sports injuries, broken bones, or torn tendons. Others have witnessed the life-saving care provided by podiatrists to family members, particularly diabetics. Shadowing opportunities have also been influential in attracting individuals to the profession. Dr. Jensen and Dr. Trepal emphasize the need for podiatrists to actively promote the profession and generate interest among potential students. They suggest that if every podiatrist recruited one student, it could have a significant impact on increasing the number of applicants and ensuring the future success of the profession. Dr. Jensen and Dr. Trepal discuss how successful students in the field of podiatry require three key qualities: brain power, passion, and freedom from distractions. Dr. Jensen emphasizes that these factors are essential for students to excel in their studies and future careers as podiatrists. Overall, the episode emphasizes the significant role of the grassroots profession in mentoring and promoting the podiatry profession. Dr. Jensen encourages podiatrists to actively recruit and mentor students, generate interest in the profession, collaborate with colleges and advisors, and provide shadowing opportunities to prospective podiatry students. We're taught to learn before you do, school teaches you to read the instructions. You do this and do that right. Dean's Chat host, Dr. Jeffrey Jensen, is joined by Dr. Andrew Cohen, Residency Director of the Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency at Central Michigan University. This episode includes interesting discussions on what makes a great student during a clerkship month, and what they look for in residents. Tune in for a discussion on mentors from the Civic/Kern Hospital days, including Dr. Earl Kaplan, Dr. Irv Kanat, Dr. William Todd, Dr. Guy Pupp, Dr. Stuart Bass, Dr. Robert Weinstock, Dr. Gary Kapla, and other leaders that shaped our profession. Dr. Cohen and Dr. Jensen were residents together at Kern Hospital 30 years ago. In this episode of Dean's Chat, Dr. Jeffrey Jensen welcomes Dr. Andrew Cohen to discuss all things podiatric medicine. Dr. Cohen, hailing from Saginaw, Michigan, shares his journey from Boston University to the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, and his experience in podiatric surgical training at Kern Hospital. He currently serves as the director of the podiatric medicine and surgical residency program at Central Michigan University. Tune in to learn more about Dr. Cohen's career and his unique residency program in Saginaw. Dr. Cohen and Dr. Jensen discuss the definition of success and highlight the significance of finding fulfillment and satisfaction in one's work. They suggest that success is not solely measured by external factors such as wealth or status, but rather by the level of enjoyment and fulfillment derived from one's work. Additionally, they mention having someone to share their success with, implying the importance of interpersonal relationships and support systems in achieving success. This perspective on success aligns with the idea that true happiness and fulfillment come from pursuing one's passions and finding meaning in their work. They encourage students to prioritize their interests and cultivate strong relationships and connections. Dr. Cohen suggests that the profession needs to make a better effort to expose potential students to podiatry at an earlier stage, even before college or postgraduate studies. He believes that waiting until college or postgraduate studies is too late. Dr. Cohen points out that many college students may not even know how to get to medical school or podiatry school, what classes they need to take, or what is important for their future careers in podiatry. Dr. Cohen emphasizes that it is not solely the responsibility of organizations like AACPM or APMA to address this issue. He believes that every podiatrist has a responsibility to be an ambassador for the profession and actively engage with students in high school and the early stages of college. He suggests that podiatrists should educate students about the path to medical or podiatry school, the importance of certain classes, and the opportunities available in the field. Dr. Cohen believes that this grassroots effort from podiatrists themselves can help excel in student recruitment. https://www.cmich.edu/academics/colleges/college-of-medicine/education/residency/podiatric-medicine-surgery https://aacpm.org/ Dean's Chat Website Dean's Chat Episodes Dean's Chat Blog Why Podiatric Medicine?
