How the Rudy Gobert trade and a Kevin Durant move impacts the Portland Trail Blazers

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 4, 2022 33:30

The Utah Jazz agreed to trade Rudy Gobert to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday in the what might be the first of several seismic trades that shake up the Western Conference playoff picture. With potential moves coming for Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and Ben Simmons in Brooklyn couple with the possibility of Deandre Ayton, Donovan Mitchell and Russell Westbrook changing teams, there's a lot up in the air across the league. Like, a lot. All of these trades and moves could have major implications for the Trail Blazers. Who are still waiting to complete the Jerami Grant trade and could wait until the dust settles to finish that trade or get involved in a larger deal if some other All-Stars in hopes of further upgrading the roster. Regardless of how it all plays out, the Blazers need to get bigger. They're small and interesting and fun as it stands, but if they are serious about being competitive, they need to add size to the roster. Music for Locked On Blazers by Drae Slapz. Play Episode Listen Later Jul 1, 2022 34:03

The Trail Blazers opened the first day of free agency with a couple mild surprises. Anfernee Simons got a four-year $100 million contract and Jusuf Nurkic got nothing, left waiting for a contract agreement after the first official day of negotiations. What doe Simons' big day mean? How did it swell to $100 million and how do we judge Simons now that's he's graduated from alluring star of the future to well compensated cornerstone? On the Nurkic front, what's the deal? Or rather where's the deal? Why haven't the two sides agreed on a contract that seemed to be a forgone conclusion for months and what are the other options for both Nurkic and the Blazers if they can't agree on a new contract. Plus, is there a Kevin Durant trade demand angle to all of this that could be holding up some decision making from the Blazers and Nurkic. Finally, the Blazers are reportedly targeting Gary Payton II and Bruce Brown. What does that type of free agent target tell us about how Portland wants to play and what the front office values in a player this offseason. Learn more about your ad choices. How The Trail Blazers Can Get Better in Free Agency

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 28, 2022 36:13

The beginning of the NBA's 2022 free agency period begins June 30 and the Trail Blazers have real needs to upgrade the roster, re-sign important contributors and then scour the trade market. Here's everything you need to know to get you ready for Portland's massively important summer. First the key dates of the offseason, how the free agent moratorium works and why the Blazers won't upgrade the roster using cap space. No Cap Space, huh? Well the Blazers still have avenues to get better, including a couple small trade exceptions and the Non-Taxpayer Midlevel Exception, which is a ~$10.3 million contract that could help them lure the likes of Kyle Anderson, Thad Young, Chris Boucher, Mo Bamba or Isaiah Hartenstein to Portland. Free agency isn't the only avenue for the Blazers this summer. We look at the roster to close the show and conclude the obvious: Some kind of trade is coming. The team is not good enough and not big enough to seriously compete for the playoffs as constructed. We run down the roster and look to get a sense of what the team's needs are before the offseason begins in earnest. It's a good episode. Learn more about your ad choices. Could the Trail Blazers Really Trade for Kevin Durant? Dare to Dream!

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 27, 2022 34:28

Could the Trail Blazers swing a trade for Kevin Durant? Probably not. No. Okay but let's have some fun anyway. Damian Lillard did his part in starting the KD to Portland fantasy so let's wade into the deep waters of the hypothetical and talk about righting a wrong from the 2007 draft. First how did this get started and is Kevin Durant even likely to be on the trade market. A messy Brooklyn Nets organization and an Instagram post from Dame got everyone riled up over the past couple days. But there's still some hurtles. Durant is under contract for the next four seasons and the Blazers would have to get creative to make the money work. They'd also have to give up A LOT to get Kevin Freaking Durant on the roster. It's a long shot. But this city loves long distance shooting. The show closes with a reminder about the relative value of draft picks and spare parts in trades. Every team values things a little bit different and as we head into the offseason it's a reminder that something like a future first round pick can be valued very differently depending on the motivations of any given organization. The Trail Blazers made their pick at No. 7 in the 2022 NBA draft making a swing for a superstar with the selection of Shaedon Sharpe, a teenager who did not play a minute of college basketball en route to becoming a top ten pick. Sharpe has superstar potential but has a long way to go to fulfill that potential and isn't likely to be a Year 1 contributor on a team with playoff aspirations. We break down his massive offensive upside and why he's worth a risk at seven. In the second segment we acknowledge both the inherent risks with drafting a mystery man with no college tape to scout and also the challenge of adding an upside play who will needed some seasoning to a team on a win-now timeline. The Portland Trail Blazers acquired Jerami Grant from the Detroit Pistons in exchange for a 2025 first round pick and three second rounders the day before the NBA draft. The deal on its face looks like a good. one for Portland as the Blazers didn't have to give up their first round pick in the 2022 draft and still landed their long rumored target. Grant, who is entering the final year of his contract eligible for an extension this summer, brings the length, defensive acumen and shooting the Blazers have desperately needed at the forward spots. It's a huge win for the Blazers who aren't done dealing yet. Portland is still reportedly pursuing Raptors forward OG Anunoby for a package centered around the No. 7 pick in the NBA draft. The Blazers were always likely to take a big swing this offseason and so far it's looking like a home run attempt with chance for one of the best offseasons in franchise history. The Trail Blazers should draft Bennedict Mathurin: The definitive case

Two days before the NBA draft and I'm calling my shot. The Portland Trail Blazers should draft Arizona's Benn Mathurin with the No, 7 pick in the draft. I walk you through how I landed on Mathurin with my personal Top 12 Big Board, agonizing over AJ Griffin and Dyson Daniels and then finally why Mathurin is the guy for me. It's simple really: Shooting, athleticism, size to likely play on the wing and a relatively stable floor with a high-likelihood of being a productive NBA player. All that led me to Mathurin. That's the pick for me. Finally, we close the show with a look at the Locked On NBA mock draft where I discuss all the trades I failed to make and how I eventually landed on Mathurin in that draft as well. It's a good exercise for thinking about how hard it might be for the Blazers to pull off a solid trade on draft night, but gosh knows they'll try, and probably will have more success than a local podcaster. That means they have to trade their draft pick. Whether they trade back in the round or out of the draft entirely the 7th pick is their best trade chip and not using it would likely indicate they aren't or can't achieve their goals of being immediately competitive. The solo workout for Mathurin doesn't mean much other than that his agency wanted a solo setting for a workout. But it does mean that the Blazers are interested enough in the 6-6 wing that they obliged that preference and got Mathurin into the practice facility. Portland could be a good fit for Mathurin who is an elite shooter and transition scorer but might have issues scoring in the halfcourt and developing into a consistent high level defender. Mathurin isn't the only prospect the Blazers have scouted closely this week. They've also had eyeballs on Purdue's Jaden Ivey, Duke's AJ Griffin and Notre Dame's Blake Wesley among others. It's an offer in line with a recent valuation of the franchise by Forbes. The Blazers are headed for new ownership. Unless they aren't. The team issued a statement saying that while Knight did indeed make an offer to buy the team that the franchise is not for sale. While that may be the case all signs point it being public relations nonsense as all indications are that a sale is coming in the near future. New ownership whether it's Knight/Smolinisky or any other is almost certainly good news for the Blazers.
