As President Trump continues to try to end the war in Ukraine, Russia is playing for time. For as long as the U.S. continues to support Ukraine, Russia's military effort will remain weak and unsustainable. But if Russia is able to stall in negotiations, and degrade American and Western support for Ukraine, they could very well emerge victorious. How should Ukrainian leadership respond to continued American attempts at war-ending negotiations? And what are the consequences if America withdraws its support for Ukraine? Frederick W. Kagan is the director of AEI's Critical Threats Project and a former professor of military history at the US Military Academy at West Point. He is the author of the 2007 report Choosing Victory: A Plan for Success in Iraq, which is one of the intellectual architects of the successful “surge” strategy in Iraq, and the book Lessons for a Long War (AEI Press, 2010). His Critical Threats Project, alongside the Institute for the Study of War, releases regular updates on Iranian activity in the Middle East, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and transnational terrorism on the African continent.Read the transcript here. This is a conversation to kick off the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. Retired U.S. Army Major General and history buff, Bill Rapp, drops some knowledge on how the colonies weren't exactly gung-ho for a full-blown revolution before April 1775. Turns out, they were mostly ticked off and feeling rebellious in response to intolerable British policies. But a tense situation and an itchy trigger finger set it off. The episode covers the action-packed Battles of Lexington and Concord, George Washington taking charge of the Continental Army, the intense Battle of Bunker Hill (which was actually fought on Breed's Hill), and the clever move at Dorchester Heights that sent the British packing from Boston. William “Bill” Rapp is a retired Major General of the United States Army with 33 years of distinguished service which included combat deployments in three wars, two Defense Service Medals, two Bronze Star Medals, Master Parachutist and Ranger tabs. He was not only a respected Army officer, but also a leadership developer who served as Commandant of the Army War College and Commandant of Cadets at the US Military Academy at West Point.  In over 42 months in combat, Bill led an airborne engineer company in the first Gulf War, commanded a 3,000-soldier brigade in the Iraq War, served as General Petraeus' personal assistant during the Iraq Surge, and commanded over 17,000 troops supplying all resource needs of the 160,000 U.S. and international force in Afghanistan in 2011-12. He also served as the Army's senior liaison to the U.S. Congress. Bill holds a PhD in Political Science from Stanford University and is the author of the book about the Boston Campaign of the American Revolutionary War titled Accomplishing the Impossible: Leadership That Launched Revolutionary Change. He now consults and teaches on leadership and is working on his second book on Sioux and Cheyenne leadership at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. What if you could redefine your identity beyond titles and roles? How do you know which path to take when you come upon a fork in the road along life's journey? Join us, as we explore these profound questions with our remarkably wise guest, Dave Schutter. From Military to Ministry - Dave Schutter's Wisdom Journey Our special guest Dave Schutter had his sights set on a military career, dreaming of an appointment to West Point. But God had a different plan for his life. From his dreams of West Point to a transformative mission trip to Albania, Dave's journey is a testament to adaptability, faith and finding purpose. Together, we unravel the intricate balance of separating who we are from what we do, sharing experiences from his time as a military chaplain in Afghanistan and his work in pastoral ministry. It's an engaging conversation steeped in life's simple joys and the wisdom found in unexpected places.   More about Pastor Dave Schutter Dave is a military veteran, a pastor and a pizza aficionado. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, as the son of a military man, Dave dreamed of attending West Point, but a sports injury prevented him from passing the fitness entrance exam. He didn't give up on that dream and years later Dave qualified for that appointment to the US Military Academy at West Point. But he turned down that opportunity in favor of something different.   Today, Dave leads the congregation at Northwest Presbyterian Church as Senior Pastor. Notably in Dave's life, he served as a military Chaplain in the US Army, including an active deployment in Afghanistan. That tour of duty earned him the prestigious Bronze Star.   Dave Schutter graduated with a Master of Divinity degree from Covenant Theological Seminary in 1997 and earned a Master of Theology degree from Westminster Seminary in 2017. He completed his undergraduate studies at Miami (Ohio) University in 1993. Dave is also a contributor to the Jonathan Edwards Encyclopedia (Eerdmans, Fall 2017) and the Jonathan Edwards Global Sermon Editing Project.   Dave, his wife Kim, and their three children live in the Columbus Ohio area.   Resources Connect with Dave on LinkedIn Link to website for Dave's church - Northwest Presbyterian Church   Credits Editor + Technical Advisor Bob Hotchkiss Brand + Strategy Advisor Andy Malinoski PR + Partnerships Advisor Rachel Bell Marketing, Social Media and Graphic Design Chloe Lineberg   Stay Connected with Us on Social YouTube @themainthingpod Twitter @themainthingpod Instagram @themainthingpod Facebook  @TheMainThingPod LinkedIn   Help Support and Sustain This Podcast Become a subscriber. Israel's strike, involving over 100 aircraft, effectively took out Iranian air defense systems and decimated Iran's missile production capabilities. However, either because of Israel's strategic calculation or pressure from President Biden, Israel chose not to target Iran's nuclear or oil production. Tuesday, October 8, 2024 Hoover Institution, Stanford University The Hoover Institution's Wargaming and Crisis Simulation Initiative presents To War or Not to War: Vietnam and the Sigma Wargames on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at 2:00PM PT. In 1964, America was slowly marching towards war in Vietnam. But what if that war could have been fought differently or avoided altogether? The Sigma Games, a series of politico-military wargames run by the Pentagon's Joint Staff in the 1960s, sought to understand the unfolding conflict in Southeast Asia. These games, which involved top figures from the Johnson Administration—including National Security Adviser McGeorge Bundy, Air Force General Curtis LeMay, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Earle Wheeler—offer a chillingly accurate forecast of the war's potential trajectory.  Choose your character for an immersive experience. See the game unfold through the eyes of pivotal figures such as John McCone, Curtis LeMay, Earle Wheeler, and McGeorge Bundy in this interactive event. This event introduces the games and turns to a panel of historians to explore the Sigma Wargames, their prescient warnings, and why these early insights failed to shape the Johnson Administration's decision-making, ultimately leading to one of America's most costly conflicts.  The conversation, while a look into a key set of games at a historical moment in American foreign policy, says something more broadly at the impact of wargames on US foreign and defense policy as well as how influence is created (and hijacked) within strategic decision making. PANELISTS H.R. McMaster is the Fouad and Michelle Ajami Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. He is also the Bernard and Susan Liautaud Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute and lecturer at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business.  McMaster holds a PhD in military history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was an assistant professor of history at the US Military Academy. He is author of the bestselling books Battlegrounds: The Fight to Defend the Free World and Dereliction of Duty: Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Lies that Led to Vietnam. In August 2024, McMaster released his most recent book, At War with Ourselves: My Tour of Duty in the Trump White House. His many essays, articles, and book reviews on leadership, history, and the future of warfare have appeared in The Atlantic, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, National Review, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, and the New York Times. McMaster is the host of Battlegrounds: Vital Perspectives on Today's Challenges and is a regular on GoodFellows, both produced by the Hoover Institution. He is a Distinguished University Fellow at Arizona State University. Mai Elliott is the author of The Sacred Willow: Four Generations in the Life of a Vietnamese Family, a personal and family memoir which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, and RAND in Southeast Asia: A History of the Vietnam War Era. She served as an advisor to Ken Burns and Lynn Novick for their PBS documentary on “The Vietnam War” and featured in seven of its ten episodes.  She recently contributed a chapter analyzing “The South Vietnamese Home Front” for the soon to be published Cambridge University Press 3-volume work on the Vietnam War.    Mai Elliott was born in Vietnam and grew up in Hanoi and Saigon.  She attended French schools in Vietnam and is a graduate of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.  (She also writes under the name of Duong Van Mai Elliott).   Mark Moyar is the director of the Center for Military History and Strategy at Hillsdale College, where he also holds the William P. Previously, he directed the Project on Military and Diplomatic History at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC, and worked as a national security consultant. He has taught at the U.S. Marine Corps University, the Joint Special Operations University, and Texas A&M University. He is author of eight books, of which the most recent is Masters of Corruption: How the Federal Bureaucracy Sabotaged the Trump Presidency. He holds a B.A. summa cum laude from Harvard and a Ph.D. from Cambridge. About the authorDavid Warner Mathisen explores the world's ancient myths, scriptures, and sacred stories and the evidence that they share a common foundation, based on a system of celestial metaphor that is very specific and almost certainly connected, probably descended from an extremely ancient culture predating even ancient Egypt, ancient Mesopotamia, ancient India, and even present in the sacred traditions of extremely ancient cultures in Australia, in Africa, in the Americas, and in the Pacific. When we begin to hear the myths in the language that they are actually speaking, we find that they have as a central theme the path to recovery of our own authentic Self, from whom we become alienated in this life through trauma.David is a graduate of the US Military Academy at West Point and has a graduate degree in literature from Texas A&M University. He has been an instructor in the Department of English and Philosophy at West Point and currently lives in his home state of California, where he enjoys surfing and watching the stars, planets, and heavenly cycles.https://www.starmythworld.com/courses-1Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/earth-ancients--2790919/support.

We're back on our mission to get to the bottom of why providing soldiers with healthy food is such a challenge for the Army, and this time we have an insider with decades of experience in running Army food service operations. Jeremy M. Deck is a Vice President at the national insurancebrokerage firm HUB International specializing in commercial risk management, employee benefit, and human resources consulting. Although the bio he sent us focused heavily on his work in the insurance industry, that's obviously not what we're here to talk to him about. Jeremy's professional career, spanning over two decades in the Army, exemplifies dedication to leadership, operational planning, and management. His military service, culminating as the Food Service Director for the US Military Academy at West Point, makes him a perfect person for us to bring on to discuss one of our favorite issues: how the Army feed's its soldiers. Jeremy possesses a passion for service to the community through involvement and outreach as a member of several organizations locally. Jeremy volunteers as a mentor with the national non-profit American Corporate Partners, an organization that places industry mentors with service members exploring post-military employment. Additionally, his community involvement includes board service with the non-profit Eating for Your Health a 501c3 non- profit based in Princeton, New Jersey, that aims to promote health through cooking and eating whole, nutrient-dense foods. These are only two among many volunteer efforts he's a part of. Jeremy holds an MBA from the University of South Carolina's Darla Moore School of Business where he specialized in International Business and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. We also owe a shout out to George Dailey, for making this episode happen. He was the one who first referred us to Jeremy and said he had a night and day impact of the food service operation at West Point.

WTH is Iran Attacking Israel? Fred Kagan Explains

What the Hell Is Going On

Last weekend, for the first time since the founding of the Islamic Republic in 1979, Iran launched a direct attack on Israel from Iranian territory. In total, some 170 drones, 120 surface-to-surface ballistic missiles, and more than 30 cruise missiles targeted Israel, with most coming from Iran, and some from Iranian proxies in Iraq and Yemen. In response to what was a well-advertised attack, Israel, the United States, Great Britain, France, and Jordan (among other Arab countries) deployed from land, sea, and air with jets, missile defense, and a guided missile cruiser among a sophisticated array of defensive assets. As a result, a reported seven missiles landed mostly harmlessly in Israel, with injuries restricted to shrapnel injuring a young Bedouin girl. Israeli and American leaders were quick to celebrate Iran's failed attack and the “restoration of deterrence.” But are the Israelis correct in celebrating Iran's inability to cause real damage? Or are they ignoring the very real risk that seven Iranian missiles actually hit the State of Israel? What will Iran learn from this exercise? And how did their attack reflect the lessons Russia is learning on Iranian equipment in Ukraine?Frederick W. His Critical Threats Project, alongside the Institute for the Study of War, releases regular updates on Iranian activity in the Middle East, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and transnational terrorism on the African continent.Download the transcript here. Drawing on their different perspectives and areas of expertise, Petraeus and Roberts show how often critical mistakes have been repeated time and again, and the challenge, for statesmen and generals alike, of learning to adapt to various new weapon systems, theories and strategies. Among the conflicts examined are the Arab-Israeli wars, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, the two Gulf Wars, the Balkan wars in the former Yugoslavia, and both the Soviet and Coalition wars in Afghanistan, as well as guerilla conflicts in Africa and South America.  Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare From 1945 to the Russian Invasion of Ukraine (Harper, 2023) culminates with a bracing look at Putin's disastrous invasion of Ukraine, yet another case study in the tragic results when leaders refuse to learn from history, and an assessment of the nature of future warfare. Filled with sharp insight and the wisdom of experience, Conflict is not only a critical assessment of our recent past, but also an essential primer of modern warfare that provides crucial knowledge for waging battle today as well as for understanding what the decades ahead will bring. In this episode, Justin Chezem, head coach of Christopher Newport University men's soccer, and I are privileged to welcome Jackson Meyer and Jubril Bamgbala, Cadet Student-Athletes from the United States Military Academy at West Point. SummaryIn this conversation, two West Point soccer players, Jubril Bamgbala and Jackson Meyer, discuss their experiences at West Point and the transition from high school to college soccer. They talk about their expectations versus reality, the leadership lessons they learned during the recruiting process, the preparation required before entering West Point, and their post-graduation plans and requirements. They also discuss the unique challenges and rewards of playing soccer at West Point. They talk about the unique challenges of balancing academics and athletics, the intensity of the Army-Navy rivalry, and the opportunities for off-season training. They also share insights into the academic year and breaks, the possibility of studying abroad, and the expectations and opportunities after graduation and commissioning. The conversation concludes with advice for high school students and a discussion about the potential for playing professional soccer.TakeawaysThe recruiting process for West Point involves meeting with senators, getting letters of recommendation, and understanding the type of school West Point is.Expectations versus reality: West Point is designed to humble and develop individuals, and failure is seen as a building moment.Leadership lessons from the recruiting process include the importance of respect, holding others to a standard, and caring for their well-being.Preparing for West Point involves physical training, packing, and spending time with loved ones before reporting. After graduation, West Point graduates are required to serve five years in the Army and have various opportunities for further education and career paths.Transitioning from Beast (basic training) to soccer involves getting back into the flow of the game and receiving support from the team and staff.Soccer at West Point is similar to other Division 1 schools, but the schedule and team dynamics create a unique and fulfilling experience. Balancing academics and athletics at a service academy requires discipline and time management skills. The Army-Navy game is a highly anticipated and intense rivalry that holds great significance for both teams.Off-season training is crucial for individual development and team improvement. The academic year at a service academy includes breaks and holidays, but the schedule is rigorous.Studying abroad is a possibility for service academy students, with popular destinations being Germany and Italy.Summer training and internships provide opportunities for further development and exploration. It is important to start developing good habits and leadership skills early on in high school. After graduation and commissioning, service academy graduates have the opportunity to become platoon leaders in the Army.Playing professional soccer after graduation is possible, but the financial implications and opportunities vary.06:37 Expectations vs Reality18:19 Leadership Lessons from the Recruiting Process20:46 Preparing for West Point26:10 Post-Graduation Plans and Requirements34:05 Transitioning from Beast to Soccer37:16 Soccer at West Point39:41 Balancing Academics and Athletics42:01 The Intensity of the Army-Navy Rivalry44:06 Off-Season Training46:36 The Academic Year and Breaks51:15 Summer Training and Internships53:22 Advice for High School Students56:49 Life After Graduation and Commissioning58:46 Opportunities in the Big Army59:12 Playing Professional Soccer01:01:24 Closing Remarks

On today's episode we're focusing on medial collateral ligament injuries with Dr. Brett Owens. We'll start off our discussion today with an article authored by our guest, Dr. Brett Owens, titled “The Epidemiology of Medial Collateral Ligament Sprains in Young Athletes” from the 2014 issue of AJSM.The authors performed a longitudinal cohort study of US military cadets and found that MCL injuries are relatively common in the athletic population. Male athletes are at significantly greater risk than females –of the 128 injuries in this study, 89% occurred in males. Intercollegiate athletes are also at greater risk than athletes participating in intramural sports. The incidence of MCL injury was highest in wrestling and hockey. In terms of time missed, the average amount of time was 23 days but this differed based on the grade of injury – with grade I sprains only missing a median of 13.5 days.Up next is a Current Concepts Review article from JBJS authored by Robert LaPrade and colleagues at the University of Minnesota. Some takeaways from this paper: First, the medial structures of the knee (including the superficial and deep MCL as well as the posterior oblique ligament) are the most commonly injured ligamentous structures of the knee. The majority of medial knee ligament tears are isolated injuries. Physical examination is the initial method of choice for diagnosis and includes application of a valgus load to the knee in both full extension as well as in 20 to 30 degrees of knee flexion. In terms of imaging, valgus stress radiographs and MRI are useful to confirm and grade the injury. We wrap up Part I with a discussion on the prevention of MCL injury and review an article from the August issue of OJSM this year titled “Prophylactic Knee Bracing in Offensive Lineman of the NFL – A Retrospective Analysis of Usage Trends, Player Performance and Major Knee Injury.” Dr. Robert Gallo and team at Penn State found that brace wears had a significantly lower rate of major knee injury, defined as an injury requiring time missed. The most common knee injury in nonbracers was an isolated MCL injury. There was no difference in player performance between bracers and nonbracers. Interestingly, despite this data, brace usage has steadily declined – from 16.3% in 2014 to 5.6% in 2020 – specifically at the rookie level. We are joined today by Dr. Brett Owens, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at University Orthopaedics in Providence Rhode Island, who specializes in complex shoulder, knee and sports medicine. He is the Chief of Sports Medicine at the Miriam Hospital in Providence, RI and the Director of the Rhode Island Cartilage Repair Center. He is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Brown University Alpert Medical School and is currently a Team Physician for Brown University and the Providence Bruins. Prior to joining University Orthopaedics, Dr. Owens served as the Chief of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at Keller Army Hospital at West Point New York, where he cared for soldiers and cadets at the US Military Academy and was the Team Physician for Army lacrosse, rugby, and football teams. While deployed in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom, Dr. Owens served as Chief of Orthopedics at the 86th Combat Support Hospital. He has also served as Team Physician for US Lacrosse like Catherine! Needless to say, he is a very accomplished person and we are excited to have him join us today.
