Welcome to HashTag Trending, the weekend edition. I'm your host Jim Love. I can understand if many of you get frustrated about politics. What we see for the most part is a lot of BS. Ask a politician a simple question and you'll get a lot of non-answers, talking points ways that their political opponents have it wrong. Yes, that's true even in Canadian politics. So what do we do? We can get involved and try to change the process. I've certainly done that. I've worked for every political party at one point. I've worked for the NDP - Neil Young - not the musician and Bob Rae, I've worked to support the Liberals under Stephane Dion, one of the most incredible people I've ever met, I've been a riding president of a Progressive Conservative riding which led me to meet and grown to like Joe Clarke for the authentic person he is. I know what you are thinking. What's wrong with this guy? Can't he take a side? And the clear answer is no. I can't take sides. There is only side - and that's what's best for Canadians. So I've never been a believer in party labels. I wanted to work with authentic people who wanted to make Canada a better nation and make a future for our children. And the need was never greater. Canada is in crisis. Our productivity numbers are plummeting. Regardless of what you get fed from government sources, we are not a leader in AI, or in digital government. But equally, the stuff that the opposition parties are feeding you - that's nonsense as well. The reality is if you strip away the party lines, if you talk to the smartest people in Ottawa, you'd know the truth. We are in crisis. Our future standard of living is in real jeopardy. And yet, we are an incredibly resilient people, we have so much going for us, that if we could get it together we could fulfil that quote of Wilfred Laurier - the 21st Century belongs to Canada. But what do we do? Fortunately, we have a structure in our Government where parties don't really have to matter. It's called the Senate. For my American listeners, you have a Senate as well - it's called the body of “sober second thought.” The difference in Canada - our senators are actually sober. I say that in jest, but in our Senate, and I'm not taking political sides, but credit where credit is due, our Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, said he would no longer make political appointments to the Canadian Senate. He would appoint knowledgeable people and challenge them to “challenge the government's thinking.” In other words, he would try to make the Senate truly a “body of sober second thought.” A place where non-partisan citizens would join with only the best interests of the country at heart. A place where people who weren't politicians could offer their experience and expertise to the governance of our nation. There's nobody you will meet that embodies this more than my guest, Colin Deacon. Senator Deacon is a serial entrepreneur and someone who knows technology and knows how to build businesses that export to the world in a digital economy. And we're lucky to have him - both in the senate and for this interview. I met Senator Deacon at the Digital Governance Council, another group of non-partisan, business and government leaders who also have one objective - to help Canada become a leader in the digital economy. I was totally impressed by him and asked if he's sit for an interview with us. I hope you'll be as inspired by it as I was.

Want to know what college recruiters are looking for in their athletes? Should you specialize in a sport at a young each to reach that level? The State University of New York College at Brockport has been a powerhouse in the Division III Men's Basketball scene for years. Their fast-paced style of play has produced 9 conference championship teams and several appearances in the NCAA Division III Championship tournament. One of those appearances was in the 2006-2007 season where they reached the Elite 8, and Seth and Joe were both players on that team. This 2019-2020 season was on track to be one of their best ever with a 26-3 record, and ranking as high as 11th on D3HOOPS.com. Just as they reached the Sweet Sixteen in the tournament, their season was cut short by the coronavirus. Seth Johnston and Joe Clarke are both long-time coaches on staff, alongside Head Coach Greg Dunne. They share the recruiting process used by Brockport, and the types of players they are looking for in their program. They also stress the importance of unstructured play during childhood, and the importance of becoming a well-rounded athlete versus specializing in one sport while growing up. This is a great episode for students looking to play a sport in college, parents looking for help on guiding their kids in sports, and fellow coaches at any level looking to gain some insight on some of the behind the scenes works of an excellent program.Episode Timeline:1:30 - Rapid fire questions8:10 - 2019-2020 Season9:10 - Transition From Player to Coach14:30 - Seth’s Story20:00 - Recruiting28:15 - Bigger, Faster, Stronger33:15 - Importance of Unstructured Play40:00 - Building Toughness Through Play41:30 - Why Brockport?Website:https://gobrockport.com/sports/mens-basketballInstagram:@brockport_mbbMOVRS Website:http://www.movrs.orgMOVRS Instagram:@wermovrsSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/movrs)

We talk about the movie/documentary "Headstrong" which took an unexpected turn during shooting. It was originally supposed to be about RVD on the road doing stand up, but quickly became a documentary about brain health. Having suffered a concussion the night before leaving on tour, Rob was dealing with the effects of the concussion on the road, he was light sensitive, seeing double, having headaches to name a few symptoms. During the making of the film RVD was fighting the idea of focusing on his concussion, because he didn't want to be viewed as anything other than Superman, Rob Didn't want to become the poster boy for concussions. RVD and Filmmaker Joe Clarke fought for their vision of the film's direction. After going back and forth many times they came to an agreement. The decision to show his human side paid off, after hearing how Rob's story helped many people, and now RVD hope's to continues to to be the poster boy for brain health.Rob also talks about a documentary that he saw after Headstrong came out, that if he saw before Headstrong might have made him take his concussion more seriously. Chris Nowinski's Head Games A documentary that follows Chris, a football player and pro-wrestler's quest to uncover the truth about the consequences of sports related head injuries.Keep your eyes open for RVD's line of CBD products, which have qualities that are proven to help support brain health as well as kill pain. he has some tinctures and creams that will be available soon. A look at Jan Van Meter's 21st Century updated take on Black Lightning's origin story.Affiliate link included.Transcript:"Justice like lightning should ever appear, to some men hope, to other men fear." We're taking a look at Black Lightning, Year One, coming up next.Black Lightning was created by Tony Isabella in 1977. Black Lightning, Year One was published in 2009 and is a modern updating of Black Lightning's origin stories. The reason this was done is that he was introduced prior to Crisis on Infinite Earth where the DC Universe could be rebooted, and its continuity simplified so that that would never happen again. And about twenty-five years later they had to do it again. The original origin story from the 1970s really worked pretty well for the most part. The story was that Jefferson Pierce, a gold medal Olympian, returned to his old high school – Garfield High in a suicide slum in Metropolis – to serve as a high school teacher; and the murder of one of his students leads him to become Black Lightning and to take on the 100, the evil gang that dominates his city. 2009 Update changes some things. First, rather than coming in as a teacher he arrives as the principal. In some ways I think this is kind of a nod to Lean on Me where Morgan Freeman plays Joe Clarke, a principal who comes to restore order to a troubled school. In the original story Pierce was divorced and his ex-wife showed up working at the same school he was at, and she is in the school and frequently ignored until finally they become friends and happily divorced as was the big trend in the 1970s, the cultural push for people to become divorced, be good friends and have it all be very socially acceptable. This not really being a thing in 2009 he is actually still married to his wife Lynn and they have one child and another child's quickly on the way. But Jeff's decision to become Black Lightning creates a lot of friction in his marriage, ending up with her leaving him though not getting divorced. She doesn't come off particularly well in the exchange but there's actually a reason for it, and it's probably the book's most clever innovation. And what makes a good retelling of an origin story stand out from one that is a bit weak, a good retelling will take a look at some element of the story that wasn't explained or fleshed out and flesh it out and provide a remarkable twist that fills in a hole that a writer in a previous age hadn't thought of. And writer Jen Van Meter really does that here. When you think about it a key problem with the original story of Suicide Slum called Southside here in Year One is the idea that there is a portion of Metropolis that is overrun with crime, and that Superman doesn't do anything about it. When you think about it the idea then is that Superman is not addressing the problems with crime in this neighborhood unlike crime in other parts of Metropolis, because he doesn't really care about black people. I'm sure that is not what Tony Isabella was going for. He was used to dealing with Marvel characters, and Marvel characters do not generally have as much power or scope as Superman. There's a reason Spider-Man doesn't fight crime in Harlem as a practice, because his main area is Manhattan and Queens, and he cannot fly everywhere in the city. Superman is different and the original take on this leaves the impression that there's a portion of Metropolis that Superman is ignoring even as he flies all over the world and universe to fight crime elsewhere. And Van Meter does something clever and introduces an evil mystical force into the equation as the key cause behind this. And as most people know, Superman does not have powers against magic; and in the books it's referenced that Superman is weakened inside the Suicide Slum....
