She's a musician, blogger, music business analyst and consultant and social media teacher. She regularly contributes articles on the music industry and music marketing to Hypebot, the ASCAP Daily Brief, and other online music industry blogs. As both a technologist and life-long learner, Solveig holds an engineering degree, an MBA and a K-8 Teaching Certificate. In addition to writing, performing and licensing her music, she also works as an independent marketing consultant for tech companies and musicians, teaches seminars on music marketing at the Art Institute of Seattle, and is a social media instructor at the University of Washington in their Professional and Continuing Education certificate program. Solveig and her musical partner, Stevie Adamek, just released their second studio album in September 2014 called Fire and Other Playthings. Solveig Whittle joins us again to take a look at iTunes' current status in the market, evaluate its competitors, and peer into the future of Apple's devices.
Part 1 of this episode looks at how iTunes has impacted music consumers, artists, and the overall industry over the past 10 years. In Part 2, we'll discuss iTunes' current challenges and what the future might hold for the #1 music retail platform.
This week I am interviewing Solveig Whittle. Solveig is involved in the North West Music Experience, a music conference debuting next year in Seattle. She is a singer and music marketer as well as a software developer. As she puts it: "I’m a high tech marketer who has a serious music habit I’ve been feeding for the past 30 years. I love how these two interests are finally coming together for me." Starting her professional career in music a little later in life she has applied her previous success in business to her career in music. With her own success she is helping other aspiring musicians to do the same. Coming from the tech world it is surprising just how many similarities can be drawn to the current music industry. Solveig was involved in the early software development at Microsoft. Creativity and collaboration were as important in the early days of Microsoft as they are in today's music industry. There is always a lot to be learned from the experiences of others and the conversation with Solveig shares many! Aaron Bethune www.playitloudmusic.com
