What is AI really costing you when you hand over your creative control? If you're a solo or small business owner creating content to grow your business, you already know the pressure to keep up. Between SEO demands, audience expectations, and new AI tools promising shortcuts, it's tempting to hand over control and “let the robot do it.” But will your audience feel any connection to you when they finally find your content? Or will you sound like everyone else who is letting AI create their content from start to finish?I'm joined by Emily Gertenbach, a seasoned SEO content strategist who's been writing human-centered digital content since 2010. She's worked with clients ranging from local agencies to internationally recognized companies, and she's here to help us make sense of AI's role in content creation. Emily brings receipts, nuance, and a bit of tough love as we unpack how AI can help and hurt your brand voice, your SEO, and your connection with your audience. This isn't a doom-and-gloom episode about robots ruining your content. It's a human-first conversation about how to use AI responsibly while keeping your creative voice at the center.Listen for These Episode Highlights • What happens when a brand's copy feels “off” • Is your AI-written content quietly tanking your Google rankings over time? • How can you still show up in Google's top results without gaming the algorithm?Chapters(00:00) Why AI might be costing you more than it saves (03:15) Meet Emily Gertenbach and her mission to humanize SEO (04:07) How does generative AI like ChatGPT work? What if the real secret to getting better results with AI isn't finding the “perfect” tool, but learning how to work with the tools you already have to create the results you want?In this episode, I'm joined by Sonya Sigler, an executive coach, attorney, and someone who's been working with AI technology inside businesses long before AI became the shiny new toy on everyone's mind. Sonya shares why AI isn't a magic wand or a shortcut, and how working with it thoughtfully, through training and iteration, can actually enrich your creative process — not replace it.If you're a solo business owner or service provider feeling overwhelmed by content demands or frustrated that now there's “one more thing” you have to learn, this conversation will give you a refreshing and practical perspective. We talk about how to experiment with AI without losing your originality, why evolving with the tools matters more than chasing the latest updates, and how small shifts in your workflow can boost your creativity.Plus, I'll share how this conversation pushed me to finally commit to using ChatGPT more intentionally, and how I'm building it into my own content creation process to work smarter, without losing soul or connection.Chapters(00:00) Introduction to AI and Creative Process(00:33) Meet Sonya Sigler(02:40) The Love-Hate Relationship with AI(04:29) Training AI Tools for Better Results(06:49) Using AI in Content Creation(09:37) AI as a Collaborative Partner(13:10) AI in Career Development and Job Applications(17:11) Intellectual Property Concerns with AI(20:07) The Power of Context in AI(22:30) Iterative Process and Training AI(25:17) Authenticity in AI-Generated Content(26:59) Advanced Uses and Customization of AI Tools(31:46) Ethical Considerations and Validation(34:59) Embracing AI for Strategic Thinking(37:14) Conclusion and Call to ActionConnect with Sonya SiglerLinktree: https://linktr.ee/ssiglerCONNECT WITH JEN Book Your Podcast Power HourWebsite: https://brassybroad.comYouTube: @BrassyBroadJenLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jen-edds-470351b/Instagram: https://instagram.com/brassybroadjenTikTok: https://tiktok.com/@brassybroadjen
What if using AI in your business isn't just a tech decision—but a values decision? Have you ever found yourself standing at the crossroads with your podcast? That quiet, empty intersection where the path forward isn't clear? The road stretches in three directions. One road continues the miserable soul-sucking journey of producing your podcast even though the spark is gone. Another veers toward a pivot - changing direction while keeping your momentum. And the third... well, that's the road that lets you put it all to bed and walk away. That once-brilliant bright idea for a podcast that would change the world, or at least get you more clients, has become cumbersome. The thought of sitting down to record another episode fills you with dread instead of excitement. This has been my dilemma for weeks - loitering at the crossroads of whether to pivot and move in a different direction, miserably move forward, or put this baby to bed. If you've ever felt like you were at a crossroads with your podcast or some other creative project, give this a listen. Do you need a podcast production partner? This episode reminded me why I started podcasting. It was an opportunity to spend time with two of my most favorite people in the world while sharing them with you. It's a win for everyone! Amy Woodall and Lindsay Boccardo join me for this episode. They are both returning guests, but it has been more than a minute since we last chatted. You know those people that always make you feel better when you've spent time in their presence? That is how I always feel after spending time with these two! They leave me in better shape than they found me, even when I'm already having a fantastic day! I have a hunch they will do the same for you. We are constantly told by the online business “experts” that we need to niche down. Amy and Lindsay are taking a more expansive approach to their podcasts and their work, and it is working for them. They share why they started their podcasts and what keeps them coming back. Spoiler Alert: It's not big sponsorships and massive download numbers! I intended to talk about podcasting, but as it goes with these two, our conversation goes deeper than just podcasting. We talk about alignment, mindfulness, authenticity, curiosity, playfulness, and of course, and how those things impact our podcast and how we show up. As we wrapped up the episode, I felt inspired, empowered, and reconnected to why I started podcasting. Let's tap into our alignment, embrace mindfulness, live authentically, nurture our curiosity, and sprinkle a healthy dose of playfulness into our lives. Podcasting is not just about the numbers and business strategies. It's about creating a space for connection, authenticity, and clarity. Trust your intuition, follow your heart, and let the conversations flow. Key Takeaways (01:45) The Power of Mindfulness: Amy reminds us that true growth and leveling come from working on the internal stuff, not the external. (14:22) The Power of Self-Reflection: Amy shares how the fears we project on other people are really telling us something we need to discover about ourselves (17:12) The Importance of Representation in Telling LGBTQ+ Stories: Lindsay reminds us that the story of LGBTQ+ folks doesn't just end when they come out. It's ongoing and it's important to continue to hear these voices and stories. (22:58) Worthiness and Confidence: Amy talks about how our ability to learn, recognize patterns, process, and make shifts that impact our confidence and how we view our worthiness as we grow into ourselves (23:12) Finding Alignment: Lindsay stressed the importance of aligning our thoughts, actions, and values. (33:59) Playfulness Fuels Connection: Lindsay emphasized the magic of playfulness in creating engaging environments and fostering connections. Through laughter and light-heartedness, we can tackle serious subjects and make them more approachable. So, let's loosen up and have some fun. Traction by Gino Wickman I'm sharing how I'm using inspiration and practices from both books to help me name my own obstacles and work through them, so I'm more consistent in publishing my own podcasts, YouTube videos, social media posts, and blog posts. Most definitions paint “brassy” in a negative light of being harsh, loud, tasteless, showy, or resembling brass in color. And then….when you scroll down….you see brassy described as brazen, bold, audacious, unashamed, unrestrained by convention and propriety. I want to live a brassy life - A life lived boldly, brazenly, audaciously, and unrestrained by convention and propriety. In my world, Brassiness thrives in the intersection of curiosity, creativity, and caring no more what most folks think. I'll be sharing what I'm learning along my own adventures to live a bold and brassy life. Here's your disclaimer: I'm no subject matter expert. Far from it. I'm just a curious broad full of questions. We road-tripped to Louisville, Ky, in this latest Brassy Roadcast adventure. Highlights included a bourbon tasting at the Angel's Envy distillery, a guided ghost walk through Old Louisville, shopping, and dinner at La Bodeguita de Mima. As always, there was a little drama along the way. What if…we were encouraged to bring our creativity and our unique gifts to work with us? What would the world look like? Would we be better humans? Would we do better work? Would we feel more satisfied and happy in our work lives and beyond? What are the consequences of stuffing that creativity way down deep inside us? Rebecca Fleetwood Hession, host of The Badass Women's Council podcast joins me for this episode. In addition to talking about creativity and how we can use our unique gifts and talents professionally, Rebecca also talks about the challenges she had to overcome to get her podcast out into the world…and what has happed as a result of putting out her first sh*tty podcast episode…. Public speaking can be a crippling fear. I wonder how many of us it keeps from really reaching our full potential. I've had to get a handle on my own fears around speaking and performing in public. It's not a priority if it's not a practice. The one thing that has become crystal clear to me in 2020 is that if I don't have a practice around something that I say I want to accomplish, then it really isn't a priority. It's a just “that would be nice.” One of the core pillars supporting that bridge to Legendary status is RESPONSIBILITY. As the HBIC (Head Broad in Charge), I have to take responsibility for failure to meet the goals I have scribbled down in scattered notebooks and spreadsheets. If these goals were really priorities for me, I would have built a practice around how I would reach them. This isn't new information. As a kid, when I wanted to make more free throws, I spent time practicing shooting free throws. I had a ritual that I followed every time I stepped to the line. I still do it. BackSpin the ball. 3 bounces. Line it up. Shoot. Follow Through. You already know what practice looks like. Now it's time to take action to achieve the priorities that really matter to you. My process for creating practices around priorities: 1. Determine if the WHY matters enough that I will show up and put in the necessary work. 2. Outline your practice and keep it consistent. 3. Block Time on your calendar I started a morning routine after reading Hal Elrod's book The Miracle Morning a few years ago. I always felt better when I did it, but I was inconsistent in the practice. I got serious about committing to practicing my morning routine back in March. It was the ONE THING I could do that felt like I had some control over what was happening in a world filled with uncertainty. The Practices in My Morning Routine 1. Work out hard for 20 minutes 2. Journal 3. Meditate 4. Work on my business and not “in” my business. Each practice has a very clear WHY attached to it. My morning routine practice is sacred. Nothing else happens in my morning until my morning routine is completed. I've accomplished more in my business, during a global pandemic, because I have committed to this morning routine practice. Now it's your turn. I want to hear from you. What practice has changed your life or business? Do you have a morning routine that sets the tone for success? Brené Brown's Unlocking Us podcast episode about FFTs is now required listening for my podcasting clients because she shares her challenges around starting a new podcast and how she has worked through them. This is my first time back in a while. My focus for the past year has been on my other podcast, Beauty and the Gi, a podcast about the intersection of life and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu on and off the mat. It feels good to be back. Now, does this mean that I'm going to be back on a regular production schedule? Probably not. I'm using The Brassy Broadcast as a resource where I can direct clients and folks with questions about podcasting. It's more about adding to the resource library as needed, rather than feeling like I have to put out a new show every week. This episode is actually serving a couple of different purposes for me. The first is that I wanted to record and edit a full episode using Descript. It's a cool tool for business owners, authors, and industry experts that want to start a podcast. It's a great tool to get you started. The second purpose of this episode is to share with you why I'm making listening to the FFT episode of Brené Brown's Unlocking Us podcast required listening for my new podcasting clients. Here are some highlights with time stamps. Did you know that if you include the time stamp in your show notes, some apps will take you right to that spot in the episode? Not all apps do this. I know that it works in Overcast, Pocketcasts, and Castbox Highlights and Time Stamps :52 My thoughts on using the Descript app to record and edit this episode 1:59 Why the FFT episode is now required listening 4:01 Recording in a closet 4:30 Why is it so hard to say your podcast intro? 5:22 Keeping your podcast recording setup simple Links and Resources Mentioned Unlocking Us episode on FFTs https://brenebrown.com/podcast/brene-on-ffts/ Descript https://www.descript.com/use-cases Connect with Jen Download Your Ultimate Guide to My Favorite Podcasting Tools and Resources https://brassybroad.com/ Instagram @brassybroadjen https://www.instagram.com/brassybroadjen LinkedIN https://www.linkedin.com/in/jen-edds-470351b/ Twitter @brassybroadjen https://twitter.com/brassybroadjen YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/c/brassybroadjen

How Do I Optimize SEO for My Podcast? How do we grow our podcast audience and get new listeners? How will people find my podcast? Podcasters need a basic understanding of keywords and SEO (search engine optimization) so our podcasts can be discovered by new listeners. How can podcasters capitalize on SEO to help new listeners find their podcasts? Spoiler Alert: There is no magic bullet or SEO Jennifer Denney, Digital Strategist and Owner of Elevated Marketing Solutions, breaks down what we need to understand about SEO for podcasters. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) isn't just one thing. It is small incremental tweaks combined to impact your site's user experience and performance in organic search results. SEO is a long term strategy. There is no SEO magic bullet. It takes grit, time, energy, and expertise. What is the Ideal Length for Podcast Show Notes or Blog Posts? Jennifer does a little myth-busting here. I was under the impression that there was an ideal length for show notes. Turns out, this is not the case. People are going to Google to get questions answered. Google is looking for you to completely cover the subject from beginning to end and do it better than anyone else. How does Google determine who has the best answer? It's all of those hundreds of little tweaks. Formulating the Right Questions for SEO Think about how your listeners are phrasing questions when they are going to Google to look for answers. What words are they using? What questions are they asking? Get out of your own language box and how you say things. Ask your audience how they would search for an answer. Recommended Tools for Keyword Research Ubersuggest SEMrush.com Keywordtool.io Keywordseverywhere.com AnswerThePublic.com How to Optimize Show Notes and Blog Posts Optimize your show notes and blog posts because there are still folks that would rather read than listen to podcasts. Think about having your episode transcribed. This makes it easy to create detailed show notes. Jennifer has created a search optimization checklist to help optimize blog posts. Don't just describe what is in the episode. If your intention is to share information with your audience, give them the option of how they want to consume it. Meet Jennifer Denney, Digital Strategist and Owner of Elevated Marketing Solutions. In this podcast series collaboration, Jennifer shares insights, strategies, and tactical tips for marketing your podcast. I've struggled in marketing my own podcasts. The process of creating and producing the podcast lights me up. Marketing what I've created makes me want to jump in the bed and pull the covers over my head because I don't know where to start. What is the right way? Should I run ads? Where should I run ads? Do I need to be everywhere? How much is this going to cost? I wanted to collaborate with Jennifer on this podcast series because her work is data-driven and she has learned everything by diving into the work, figuring it out, and building her strategies one brick at a time. The first marketing myth we address in this series is the myth of marketing attribution. Jennifer made it super easy to understand: “Giving all the credit to one marketing channel or another is like drinking beer and only saying the last beer is the one that got you drunk.” In the next episode, Jennifer walks us through how to strategically think about SEO for podcast discoverability. What happens when you experience an anxiety attack on the mat? Tweet me @brassybroadjen or email jen@brassybroad.com to let me know how you handle it.
This is what happens when you go to class 3 times in one week!
I've just finished week 4! That means I've had about 8 hours on the mat now. I go twice a week for an hour. I absolutely love it. I want to go more than twice a week. I want to get better, faster. It's frustrating when you love doing something and could absolutely throw yourself into if you didn't have to run a business, do things around the house, or a myriad of other grownup responsible things. I've finished my 3rd week of classes! I'm sore. I'm still sucking for air halfway through the warmups, but I'm showing up and I'm all in. This podcast series is less about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or BJJ, and more about learning something new, getting miles outside of my comfort zone, and the willingness to totally suck at something. BJJ is the lens through which this experience is being shared.
