What does it take to walk away from a name your organization has carried for over 160 years – and replace it with something no one has ever heard? For Jeff McCarthy, SVP and Marketing Director at Bank Five Nine, it took research, courage, a tight-knit team, and an unwavering commitment to standing out in one of the most crowded markets in the world. In this episode of the He Said, She Said: Razor Branding™ Podcast, Jaci and Michael sit down with Jeff to walk through one of the most complete and compelling rebrand stories we’ve heard – from First Bank Financial Centre to Bank Five Nine. It’s a story of competitive audits, internal discovery, board presentations, and a brand launch that landed right in the middle of a global pandemic. Jeff shares how his team did it all in-house, why they chose red in a sea of blue and green, and how a three-word mission statement – make lives better – became the culture north star that unified an entire organization. Whether you’re considering a rebrand, trying to justify one to your leadership team, or simply trying to understand why clarity and differentiation matter, Jeff’s story makes the case better than any textbook could. In this conversation, you’ll hear: How a name change gave Bank Five Nine permission to tell a 160-plus-year story Why internal buy-in is just as important as external launch strategy The risk Jeff took by keeping the rebrand in-house – and why it paid off How the Wisconsin State Fair became the bank’s biggest brand megaphone What “make lives better” really means when it’s more than words on a wall Listen wherever you get your podcasts or at razorbranding.org

In this episode, Dean breaks down Calvert's unique $20K-down flip and BRRRR program, how their in-house appraisal team gives real estate investors a genuine edge on after-repair value, and how they've been closing deals in 24 hours since before it was a selling point. We also get into the story behind CAMLA, why Dean went to 20 competitors to solve a compliance problem and ended up building Canada's national alternative lending association. Dean makes the case for why calling ourselves "private lenders" may be hurting the industry, what the 2025 CAMLA position paper means for regulators and consumers, and the real risks posed by unregulated lenders operating outside the system. Thirty interviews in two days became the foundation for RN Esthetics' new website. Kevin shares the behind-the-scenes process of building a digital experience around the people who define the brand: 23 providers and seven longtime patients. Rather than relying on generic treatment messaging, the site uses real stories, genuine provider-patient relationships, and the team's own language to communicate what makes RN Esthetics different. The discussion covers why the patient remains the hero even within a provider-forward brand, how RN Esthetics' coastal New England identity shaped the visual direction, and where AI-assisted illustration supported the creative process without replacing the human story. It also explores the challenge of balancing animation, video, functionality, and page speed while creating a platform that both patients and providers can feel connected to and proud of. Firma síce využíva moderné technológie na zefektívňovanie procesov v pozadí, no komunikáciu so zákazníkmi ponecháva v rukách ľudí. Firma totiž dlhodobo zabezpečovala prepravu do krajín bývalého Sovietskeho zväzu. „V roku 2022 sme prišli približne o tretinu tržieb. Napriek tomu sa nám podarilo situáciu zvládnuť a minulý rok sme opäť rástli takmer o 40 percent,“ približuje A. Jendek. Viac si vypočujete v podcaste.

Your firm name is not just a label. It is the brand people search for, refer and remember. And most advisors get it wrong. In this solo episode, Frank LaRosa pulls back the curtain on the naming conversations he has with breakaway advisors every week. Many default to their last name without realizing it can scare off the very advisors they hope to recruit. Others fall for a name that sounds great until a quick search turns up an identical practice down the street. Frank explains why your name carries far more weight once you are independent than it ever did inside a wirehouse, where clients simply trust you as their advisor. He digs into the real marketing math too, showing how a name that blends in with dozens of competitors forces you to spend more just to be found online. He closes with the practical checklist he runs through with every client, covering abbreviations, pronunciation, how the name feels when you say it out loud and whether it has a story worth telling. If you are preparing to launch your own firm, this is the framework to get it right before it ever goes live. Questions answered in this episode include: Why does your firm name matter more after you break away than it did at a wirehouse? What happens when your name is too similar to other firms in your market? How does a crowded name drive up your marketing and SEO costs? Why should breakaway advisors think twice before using their last name? What is the difference between who you are and what you actually do for clients? What checklist should you run through before committing to a firm name? The Confederacy lost the Civil War, but the myth it built afterward never really died. In this episode, we unpack the Lost Cause: the postwar propaganda campaign that recast slavery as “states' rights,” turned Confederate leaders into martyrs, and helped justify monuments, textbooks, and generations of historical denial. From secession documents to Black Union soldier massacres, Confederate prisons, and the rise of groups like the United Daughters of the Confederacy, this episode traces how a failed slaveholding rebellion was rebranded as noble heritage. The Confederacy was not misunderstood. It was rebranded.

A federal judge has delivered a significant legal blow to the administration's plans for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. In a 94-page opinion issued Friday, U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper ruled that the institution's board overstepped its statutory authority by unilaterally adding President Donald Trump's name to the venue. The court has ordered that all physical and digital signage bearing the President's name be removed within 14 days. In this episode, we break down Judge Cooper's landmark decision. We discuss why the court determined that only Congress—not the board of trustees—has the authority to rename the historic memorial. We also examine the second part of the ruling, which blocks the administration's plan to close the facility for a two-year renovation project, calling the board's decision-making process "derelict."In this episode, we cover:The Legal Argument: Why the court ruled that the "Trump Kennedy Center" rebranding was illegal. The Closure Block: Why the two-year shutdown for renovations was halted by the court.Congressional Authority: The judge's clear statement that the Kennedy Center's identity is protected by federal law.The Fallout: President Trump's response to the ruling and his stated intent to facilitate a transfer of the institution.Make sure to subscribe, rate, and leave a review to keep up with our analysis of major legal and political developments.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/chaos-culture-radio--3078307/support.Follow Chaos Culture Radio for real conversations that move culture forward.New episodes every week.Share this episode with someone who needs to hear it.
Host Jesse Jackson welcomes Los Angeles–based musician and music teacher Jake Cassman, who shares his path from growing up in Berkeley on classic rock and '90s alternative to discovering Bruce Springsteen later through a 2008 Obama rally performance, long bus rides through New Jersey, and years playing dueling pianos. Jake discusses teaching recording and songwriting at The Geffen Academy, the realities of freelancing (busking, weddings, improv), and how COVID ended live work and pushed him into a USC master's program that led to greater stability and new opportunities, including producing for the podcast Switched on Pop. He explains why he shifted from the Drunken Logic moniker to releasing music under his own name, introduces his album Idling High, performs “We All Look the Same,” and talks songwriting, storytelling, and favorite Springsteen albums, ending with the classic Thunder Road question. https://www.podtrac.com/pts/redirect.mp3/pdst.fm/e/pscrb.fm/rss/p/traffic.megaphone.fm/PAN6239596108.mp3 00:00 Welcome and Guest Intro 02:00 Teaching Music in LA 03:00 TeachRock and Music Education 04:27 Writing and Community Programs 05:35 Growing Up With Rock 07:32 Finding Bruce Springsteen 09:14 Early Music Obsession 10:31 Dueling Pianos Stories 12:31 Requests and Deep Cuts 15:10 Freelance Music Career 17:38 Rebranding as Jake Kassman 19:17 Pandemic Shock and Pivot 22:41 Freelancing and Saying Yes 25:52 Better Paying Gigs 26:32 Idling High Origins 28:15 We All Look the Same 33:33 Storytelling Gets Universal 36:19 Bruce Road Trip Deep Dive 39:28 Next Creative Steps 40:40 Pop Podcast Tangent 44:00 Thunder Road Debate 47:53 Where To Find Jake 49:34 Final Wrap And Thanks Learn more about your ad choices. In Episode 346 of The Business Development Podcast, Kelly Kennedy sits down with Rudy A. Zacharias and Terry Elkins of About That... to explore one of the most misunderstood topics in business: branding. Drawing on decades of experience helping organizations navigate growth and transformation, Rudy and Terry explain why a brand is far more than a logo. It is the sum total of what people think, feel, and experience when they interact with your company. Together, they unpack the warning signs that your business may have outgrown its brand, the importance of aligning perception with reality, and why successful companies often reach a point where evolution becomes necessary. The conversation also provides a behind-the-scenes look at About That...'s own transformation from G Squared to its new identity. Rudy and Terry share the intentional process behind the rebrand, the challenges of balancing existing brand equity with future growth, and the critical role of employee buy-in, change management, and communication throughout the journey. Whether you're considering a full rebrand, a brand refresh, or simply want to better understand how your organization is perceived, this episode offers practical insights into building a brand that reflects who you are today and where you want to go tomorrow.Key Takeaways: A brand is not your logo. Your brand is the sum total of what people think, feel, and experience when they interact with your company. The biggest reason companies rebrand is misalignment. When who you are as a business no longer matches how you are perceived in the market, a rebrand may be necessary.Growth often creates branding challenges. As companies evolve, expand into new markets, add services, or change leadership, their original brand may no longer accurately represent them.Living things grow and living things evolve. Businesses that remain exactly the same year after year risk becoming stagnant and losing relevance.Rebranding should never start with design. Before changing logos, websites, or visual identity, organizations must first understand their values, purpose, positioning, and stakeholder perceptions.Internal alignment comes before external messaging. Employees must understand and believe in the brand before the marketplace ever sees it. Your team becomes your most important group of brand ambassadors. The truth about your brand is often found through listening. Leadership's perception of the company can be very different from what employees, customers, vendors, and partners actually experience.A rebrand is not always the answer. Sometimes a refresh, updated messaging, service clarification, culture improvements, or operational changes can solve the real issue without a complete overhaul.Successful rebrands require change management and communication. If stakeholders do not understand why a change is happening, they will create their own narratives and assumptions.Values must be lived, not displayed. He explains why he shifted from the Drunken Logic moniker to releasing music under his own name, introduces his album Idling High, performs “We All Look the Same,” and talks songwriting, storytelling, and favorite Springsteen albums, ending with the classic Thunder Road question. https://www.jakecassman.com/music 00:00 Welcome and Guest Intro 02:00 Teaching Music in LA 03:00 TeachRock and Music Education 04:27 Writing and Community Programs 05:35 Growing Up With Rock 07:32 Finding Bruce Springsteen 09:14 Early Music Obsession 10:31 Dueling Pianos Stories 12:31 Requests and Deep Cuts 15:10 Freelance Music Career 17:38 Rebranding as Jake Kassman 19:17 Pandemic Shock and Pivot 22:41 Freelancing and Saying Yes 25:52 Better Paying Gigs 26:32 Idling High Origins 28:15 We All Look the Same 33:33 Storytelling Gets Universal 36:19 Bruce Road Trip Deep Dive 39:28 Next Creative Steps 40:40 Pop Podcast Tangent 44:00 Thunder Road Debate 47:53 Where To Find Jake 49:34 Final Wrap And Thanks Learn more about your ad choices. Hilary Dubin is co-CEO and head of Jones' digital product & behavioral support program. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania magna cum laude, majoring in cognitive science with a concentration in computation and cognition, an honors thesis on the effects of gender, realism, and role of virtual agents, and a minor from Wharton in consumer psychology. She worked in David Brainard's visual neuroscience lab for 3 years and published 4 papers and supplementary materials on illumination discrimination (color perception). After Penn, she was selected as one of ten Americans to be a Ventures Fellow in the Excel Ventures incubator program in Tel Aviv, and continued on to be the inaugural member, and later program lead, of the US Associate Product Manager Program at Atlassian. She worked as a product manager at Atlassian for 5 years, ultimately as Head of Confluence Editions & Admin Experience where she launched Confluence Premium & Free into multi-million dollar product offerings with 2M+ users. She hired & managed two PMs and lead a team of over 30 developers. Prior to founding Jones, she and Caroline founded Cozier together, a sleep & loungewear brand designing ethical, effortlessly chic garments for every/body. Hilary started vaping casually in 2017 when the JUUL seemed relatively harmless and fun. When the world went on lockdown in 2020, her casual vaping habit became a daily crutch for coping with stress and working from home. After over a year of unsuccessful cold-turkey quit attempts, she finally kicked her vaping habit in 2022 when Caroline suggested she try NRT. Outside of work, Hilary loves hiking, backcountry skiing, trying to find the best burger in NYC, and playing with other people's dogs. When your messaging, positioning, and systems stay aligned, you create clarity, trust, and momentum for the next stage of growth. In this episode, Amy Maxwell, Founder and Creative Director at Maxwell Design Co, breaks down the hard truth about rebranding, business growth, brand strategy, thought leadership, positioning, operational systems, and scaling a service-based business. You'll hear practical insights on how to know when your business has outgrown its current brand, how to align your identity with growth goals, and why brand systems, messaging consistency, and operational structure matter more than just a new logo. Key takeaways:A rebrand should support growth. Without systems and structure behind it, a rebrand becomes “an expensive mood board” instead of a growth tool.Your brand is bigger than your logo. Messaging, positioning, and client experience shape how people understand your business.Consistency builds trust. Inconsistent messaging across marketing, sales, and leadership creates friction that weakens growth.Growth often creates the need for rebranding. Your systems, identity, and positioning need to reflect where you are going.Brand audits reveal hidden problems. Stefan Padfield of the Free Enterprise Institute and Heritage Foundation joins to discuss ongoing corporate and institutional responses to DEI policy rollbacks, arguing that while some progress has been made in scaling back diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, many organizations are simply rebranding rather than eliminating them. The conversation expands into concerns about ideological persistence in institutions, the risk of political complacency, and the broader cultural “whack-a-mole” effect of policy enforcement. Padfield also addresses scrutiny surrounding the Southern Poverty Law Center, referencing recent legal and fraud-related allegations while framing the organization as part of a longer-running pattern of ideological and institutional controversy. What if you could build a private practice that evolves with you through rebranding, new niches, and even public speaking? Today's guest is back for her third appearance on the show, and every time she comes on, her practice looks completely different in the best way possible.I'm so excited to reintroduce you to Vanessa Alcala, a first-generation college graduate, bilingual speech-language pathologist, and founder of TheraVolve Wellness Co., a private practice serving children and adults across Tampa Bay through clinic, in-home, school, and telehealth services.Once told by a guidance counselor she wasn't "college material," Vanessa went on to launch her private practice the day she graduated in 2019 — LLC and all. But between a global pandemic, two high-risk pregnancies, and losing her grandmother, she realized the traditional track wasn't the vibe for her.So she built her own path.Switching from adult-focused care to bilingual pediatrics. Rebranding from Vital Therapies to the deeply meaningful TheraVolve Wellness Co. Growing from a solo clinician to a team with a beautiful clinic in Carrollwood. And most recently? Turning public speaking into a high-impact, high-income marketing tool earning her "Best of the Best SLP" recognition from the Tampa Bay Times in 2025.Vanessa Alcala is a bilingual SLP, healthcare entrepreneur, public speaker, and mentor. A former dementia caregiver, she's co-host of Sip & Social, the first multi-state networking event of its kind for SLPs and women in healthcare and creator of "Impact to Income," a course helping healthcare professionals transition from clinical work to speaking opportunities and diversified income streams. She's also co-founder of The Concierge Marketing Shop, offering customizable marketing templates designed specifically for adult and pediatric private practice owners.Outside of patient care, Vanessa is a mother of two who has navigated private practice through different seasons of life. She's passionate about helping other practice owners recognize their value and build businesses that support the life they want — not the one they're told to settle for.In Today's Episode, We Discuss:How her practice has evolved in ways she never expectedThe pivots that changed everythingHow she's using public speaking to grow her practice in a way most SLPs never even considerVanessa is proof that your private practice doesn't have to look the way you first imagined it. In fact, it shouldn't. She was told she wasn't "college material." She messed up. She rebranded. She expanded into populations she never planned to serve. She built a culturally responsive bilingual practice that earned public recognition. And now? She's speaking on stages and TV, running a team, and building a business that actually lets her breathe. Her story does not have to be the exception. You, too, can evolve your practice—if you're willing to start before you feel ready. Want to build a private practice that gives you the freedom to pivot, grow, and even speak on stage? check out the Start Your Private Practice Program over at www.StartYourPrivatePractice.com.Or, if you already have an existing private practice and you're ready to take it to the next level we'd love to support you inside the Next Level Private Practitioner.
