CheloniaCast is joined by Dr. Jeff Seminoff, Program Lead of Marine Turtle Ecology and Assessment in the Marine Mammal and Turtle Division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Southwest Fisheries Science Center. The conversation focuses on Dr. Seminoff's upbringing into the world of turtles and thesis work focused on prolonged study of Green Sea Turtles. Whether it's satellite tracking, trans-oceanic movement of individual turtles, or trophic ecology of eastern Pacific Green Sea Turtles, Dr. Seminoff has unique experiences and perspectives in every aspect of these turtles. There is also valuable discussion of the culture surrounding the harvest of sea turtles and the evolution of their public perspective. Dr. Ashley Scarlett welcomes Dr. Thomas A. Jefferson to the podcast to talk about marine mammals, especially dolphins and porpoises. In this episode, Tom talks about the state of the critically endangered porpoise, the Vaquita, that is endemic to the Sea of Cortez.  The Vaquita get caught in gillnets that are targeting Totoaba fish, whose swim bladders are in high demand in China. Tom discusses how the legal Totoaba fishery led to the reduction in fish and porpoise populations by the gillnet.  There are an estimated 15 individuals left in the world.   Dr. Thomas A. Jefferson has been studying marine mammals since 1983, when he was an undergraduate at the University of California, Santa Cruz. His Master’s degree is from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, and his Ph.D. is from Texas A&M University.  Tom is Director of Clymene (KLIM IN EE) Enterprises and an Independent Researcher at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center, NOAA Fisheries, where his main interests are the development of marine mammal identification aids, and investigating the systematics and population ecology of the more poorly-known species of dolphins and porpoises. Most of his work has been related to conservation and management of marine mammals threatened by human activities. He has published over 170 books and papers on marine mammals.

1st half of show: Dr. Jarrod Santora of NOAA of the Southwest Fisheries Science Center talks about the cascading effects of a marine heatwave on whale prey, whale feeding, Dungeness crab season and whale entanglements and discusses new tools and collaborations to proactively address future marine heatwaves to minimize negative impacts to species. On the 2nd half of the show Dr. Melinda Connors, a conservation ecologist at SUNY Stony Brook discusses the amazing information bio loggers placed on albatrosses can tell us about not only their lives, but about activities on the high seas. Could they be defacto law enforcement on the high seas?

There’s been no shortage of weird whale news in Northern California over the last several months. This past week or so the news has had a mostly lighthearted bent to it: Residents caught unusual sights of both humpback and killer whales frolicking in the San Francisco and Monterrey Bays, and managed to snap some pretty great photos in the process.  More ominously though gray whales have been washing up dead along the West Coast in alarming numbers, and with all this unusual whale behavior, many are now wondering what exactly is going on down there underneath the waves. On this edition of KCBS In Depth we speak with two researchers deeply involved in the effort to find some answers to that question.  Host: KCBS Radio reporter Keith Menconi  Guests:  Bill Keener, research associate at  the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito David Weller, research wildlife biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Southwest Fisheries Science Center in La Jolla

Alan Lovewell comes from a Cape Cod fishing family that dates back to whaling times. He grew up out on the water surfing, diving and sailing as often as possible. He move west to attend UC Santa Cruz, and upon graduating went to teach sailing on the Sea of Cortez with the National Outdoor Leadership School. There he witnessed illegal fishing practices by huge international trawlers. These damaging practices were not only bad for the environment, but he noticed the impact it had on the small coastal communities. Local fishermen were struggling to feed their families and make a living.   He returned to California to study Marine Policy and earned a Masters in International Environmental Policy at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. Drawn to fisheries as he saw a unique opportunity to reconnect our communities to our oceans as our last wild food source. He realized that the health of the environment is deeply tied to food production and what we eat.  He founded Real Good Fish (formerly Local Catch Monterey Bay in 2012) as a solution to reconnect our communities to the ocean and local fisheries. Alan has spent time working with The Nature Conservancy and Conservation International in Indonesia. He was a Sea Grant Fellow with The West Coast Governors Alliance for Ocean Health at NOAA’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center and Southwest Fisheries Science Center. In 2014, he won “Entrepreneur of the Year” in Monterey County.

The vaquita is the smallest porpoise in the world and also the most endangered. Last year, a scientific survey determined there were about 30 vaquitas left in wild, down from the 60 or so found the previous year. With such low numbers, the species appears to be teetering on the edge of extinction, and scientists are now are developing a daring rescue plan to remove the vaquita from its home in the Gulf of California. To get some background on the situation and more details on the rescue, we spoke to conservation biologist Barbara Taylor. Taylor is a scientist with NOAA’s Southwest Fisheries Science Center in La Jolla, California who has been studying the vaquita for more than 20 years. She is also a lead member of the International Committee for the Recovery of the Vaquita, which is working on the plan remove the species from the wild in order to save it.
