The vaquita porpoise (Phocoena sinus) is the rarest marine mammal, with fewer than 10 individuals remaining in the wild. Found only in Mexico's Gulf of California, this elusive species is critically endangered due to illegal gillnet fishing for totoaba, a fish highly valued in Chinese markets.

I've been looking forward to today's episode for a really long time - and for two great reasons. One, it's about wildlife forensics, which is an immense field that requires knowledge of everything from wildlife behavior and morphology, to DNA, to crime scene investigation, to policy and the law. I've always been a bit of a generalist who likes to deep dive into topics on occasion…so this is a field true to my heart. And the second reason I've been looking forward to it is the guest - forensic wildlife biologist Ashley Bray. As you'll hear, Ashley - in addition to being a forensic wildlife biologist - is also a podcaster. And her podcast is a slant on human/wildlife conflict - with - as you might expect from a forensic biologist - with a true crime twist. Oh - it's called Get Out Alive - be sure to check it out.Today we take a broad look at what forensic wildlife biology entails, and the surprising connections it reveals, such as the connection between wildlife crimes and drug and human trafficking - and organized crime in general.Ashley has a few nice case examples that we review. And hold tight - you're going to learn about a super cute animal called a vaquita. So, get ready for a wide ranging discussion with forensic wildlife biologist Ashley Bray. And you can find Ashley on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook!FULL SHOW NOTES (Includes Photos!)LINKSAn Immense World by Ed YongCITES Treaty informationSea of Shadows documentarySea Shepherd Conservation SocietyUniversity of Florida's Wildlife Forensics ProgramRELATED PODCAST EPISODES#102: Sophie Osborn - From the Brink: Reintroducing Endangered BirdsSupport Us On Patreon!Buy our Merch!Music: Spellbound by Brian Holtz MusicLicense (CC BY 4.0): https://filmmusic.io/standard-licenseArtist site: https://brianholtzmusic.com Discover the Jumpstart Nature Podcast - entertaining and immersive, it's the nature fix we all need.Check past Nature's Archive episodes for amazing guests like Doug Tallamy, Elaine Ingham, and Rae Wynn-Grant, covering topics from bird migration to fungi to frogs and bats!

Charles and Jon talk to Dr Barbara Taylor (USA) and Dr Lorenzo Rojas-Bracho (Mexico), who together lead the global efforts to save the Vaquita from extinction. The Vaquita, a tiny and beautiful porpoise, is found only at the top of the Gulf of California and holds the unfortunate distinction of being the world's rarest marine mammal (possibly the rarest of any mammal species). There may be as few as 6 animals left alive. The story of the Vaquita's precipitous decline from its discovery in 1958 is as tragic as it is complex. In a fascinating conversation we learn about the Vaquita's biology and how gillnetting has driven the species to the very edge of extinction. We also discuss why illegal fishing - fueled by organized crime and a demand in East Asia for the swim bladder of the Totoaba fish - is so difficult to prevent. But Barb and Lorenzo offer some optimism for the future: there may be more Vaquitas hiding in the Gulf of California and it is not to late to save the species. For more information visit www.mammalwatching.com/podcastNotes: There is a lot more information online. Viva Vaquita is a coalition of scientists, educators and conservationists who strive to increase attention on the Vaquita. They host an International Vaquita Day every year to update folks on the latest situation. There are several documentaries about the Vaquita story including Sea of Shadows which you can find here https://www.vaquitacpr.org The IUCN's Cetacean Specialist Group website has all recent Vaquita survey reports (with 2024 coming soon) as well as reports from the recovery team (CIRVA).If you would like to help save the Vaquita you can donate money to - or volunteer to join - Sea Shepherd the conservation society who are doing very important work in the Gulf of Mexico to help tackle the illegal fishing that is killing the species. If you want to check whether the seafood you eat is sustainable then you can visit Seafood Watch even if they do not as yet carry information about the fisheries that most impact the Vaquita.Jon's report on joining the 2024 Vaquita Survey with Barb and Lorenzo is here. Finally here is the Guardian article on the 6 million antelope migration in South Sudan that Charles mentions at the start.Cover art: Barb, Lorenzo and a model Vaquita with Consag Rock in the background.Dr Charles Foley is a mammalwatcher and biologist who, together with his wife Lara, spent 30 years studying elephants in Tanzania. The size of whales varies greatly depending on the species! They range from tiny to truly enormous, with the smallest being only 8.5 feet long and 300 pounds, and the largest, the blue whale, reaching a whopping 100 feet long and 200 tons. Here's a quick breakdown of whale size diversity: Smallest: Vaquita - 8.5ft, 300lbs Medium: Humpback whale - 40-50ft, 70,000lbs Largest: Blue whale - 80-100ft, 200 tons (equivalent to 3 school buses!) To put these sizes in perspective, here are some comparisons: Blue whale (largest): As long as 3 school buses or a Boeing 737 airplane! Humpback whale (medium): As long as 2 double-decker buses! Vaquita (smallest): About the size of a large dolphin or a refrigerator! It's truly amazing how diverse whales are in size and how some of them reach such incredible proportions. If you'd like to know more about the size of a specific whale species, don't ask! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/moodkillers/message

Fishermen dying mysteriously off the coast of Japan. Entire populations of sea animals disappearing. Despite decades of work by the international community, the high seas remain law enforcement's biggest blind spot, and the site of environmental crimes whose effects reach around the world. But some people are attempting to stop these crimes: We follow the investigations of two private-citizen sleuths, one using satellites to expose massive but previously untraceable illegal fleets, another using spycraft to infiltrate a criminal network of poachers and smugglers operating on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. This episode features Sara Mitchell, professor of political science at the University of Iowa; as well as Jaeyoon Park of Global Fishing Watch and Andrea Crosta, founder and Executive Director of Earth League International.

Dr. Marcela Vásquez-León is the Director of the Center for Latin American Studies and Professor of Anthropology in the School of Anthropology, University of Arizona. She has conducted research and outreach for over two decades with smallholder agricultural and fishing communities throughout Latin America and the U.S. Southwest. Her focus includes collective organization, common property resources, and rural development. In this episode of the JSW Radio Podcast, we speak with Dr. Vásquez-León about the impact of efforts to protect the endangered vaquita marina on fishing communities in Mexico's upper Gulf of California. Scientists and international non-profit organizations, working in tandem with the Mexican government, have invested significant intellectual, financial, and human resources in the upper gulf and on the vaquita. Vásquez-León argues, however, that their efforts have resulted in the near total collapse of what was once a robust fisheries economy and, thus far, have produced few demonstrable successes. Her analysis of the situation, based on years of work with local fishing communities, points to the disparities and injustices that so often result from conservation programs that focus on protecting a single species without considering the deeply entangled “natures” and “cultures” that such efforts both affect and produce. Ultimately, it is not an argument against protecting ecologies and environments but rather a push for a view and approach that considers relationships between human and non-human worlds.

MCU – MARVEL STUDIOS Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Pushes Disney Over $3 Billion at Box Office for the Year https://comicbook.com/movies/news/black-panther-wakanda-forever-pushes-disney-over-3-billion-at-box-office-for-the-year/ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is already one of the biggest hits of the year. The film is being greeted with great reviews and a tremendous response from audiences with an 84% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an A CinemaScore. Now, it seems that the sequel has another accolade to place under its belt. After Wakanda Forever's massive $381 million debut, Disney has officially passed $3 billion at the box office for the year. The film combined with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, Lightyear, and Death on the Nile all contributed to the final number. Thunderbolts Will Drop a Bomb on the Marvel Cinematic Universe https://gizmodo.com/thunderbolts-david-harbour-mcu-movie-1849776448 Marvel's antihero team-up Thunderbolts is reuniting an oddball family, as David Harbour's Red Guardian and Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova join forces again and build on their complicated relationship established in 2021's Black Widow. Although he has not yet received a script for the Marvel Cinematic Universe project, Harbour spoke to io9 while on the press tour for his new holiday movie, Violent Night, and shared that he knows "the arc of the movie and how it functions...and it's super cool. The idea is really cool." The actor, best known for his role in Stranger Things, then expressed his excitement about working with Pugh again. "What [director Jake Schreier] wants to do with Florence's character is very interesting and how I factor into how we develop our relationship is very interesting," he said. Their troubled father-daughter dynamic was teased in Black Widow, but Harbour hints that it will be explored even further in "this movie that's, you know, kind of ragtag." ‘Wakanda Forever' Costume Designer Ruth Carter on Film's New Water Sets: ‘I Had to Weigh Costumes Down so They Wouldn't Float' https://variety.com/2022/artisans/awards/wakanda-forever-black-panther-costume-design-production-design-cinematography-ruth-carter-1235429898/ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever costume designer Ruth E. Carter and production designer Hannah Beachler revealed that the film's costumes required weights for its underwater scenes. In an interview with Variety, Carter shared that since a good portion of the film takes place in the undersea city of Talokan, the crew had to test how the costumes they designed interacted with the water. Weights were eventually added to the outfits to ensure they looked as intended under the ocean. "For the water scenes, we had a 20-foot tank in which we did tests," Carter said. "Divers went down in the water and I had to put them in costumes that included headdresses and capes, just to see what those costumes would do in water, and I ended up putting weights in." Daredevil: Born Again Reportedly Aiming for a TV-MA Rating https://www.cbr.com/daredevil-born-again-tv-ma-rating-report-mcu/ Daredevil: Born Again, the upcoming soft-reboot of Netflix and Marvel's Daredevil series, will be going after the equivalent of television's R rating, according to an industry insider. "Is Daredevil gonna be TV-MA?" a fan on Twitter asked of industry insider Daniel Ricthman. Richtman, a proven source of reliable leaks, gave a simple, one-word reply: "Likely." This revelation should please fans of the original show. The former Daredevil series stands out from typical Marvel fare with its gritty, realistic depiction of violence and the physical and emotional toll being Daredevil puts on Matt Murdock, the man behind the mask. A TV-MA rating should allow the showrunners to push Daredevil: Born Again even further. Daredevil's Deborah Ann Woll Still Hasn't Been Asked to Join Born Again https://www.cbr.com/daredevils-deborah-ann-woll-still-hasnt-been-asked-to-join-born-again/ Daredevil star Deborah Ann Woll has confirmed that she still hasn't been asked to feature in Daredevil: Born Again, a reboot of the Netflix show. On an episode of the Inside of You podcast hosted by Michael Rosenbaum, Woll revealed that she hasn't received any calls from the makers of the Daredevil reboot. "So, as of now, I am not a part of it," the actor confirmed. Woll starred as Karen Page, Matt Murdock's secretary and love interest on the Netflix show that was canceled after three seasons. Woll shared that she would be "thrilled" to be on the show and felt like there was more for her character to explore. "They know where I am. Like I said, I love the character Karen Page. I love telling that story. But it is up to them what kind of story that they want to tell," she added. Karen Page was an integral part of all three seasons of Daredevil and played a significant role in Matt Murdock's life. AGATHA: COVEN OF CHAOS: MORE STORY DETAILS REVEALED: EXCLUSIVE https://www.theilluminerdi.com/2022/11/17/agatha-coven-of-chaos-details/ Agatha: Coven of Chaos may be at least partially set in Westview, NJ -- the same town where WandaVision took place. The story was broken by the Illuminerdi, who reported that Agatha: Coven of Chaos will return to Westview. According to the site, "The show seemingly picks up where WandaVision left off, as Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) will be freed from Wanda's spell, which imprisoned her in her Westview persona, Agnes. Most interestingly our sources stated that she is freed by a new Coven of Witches. Aubrey Plaza is one of them and according to some casting details it can be assumed that Ali Ahn is also part of them." MCU – TIMELINE Will the MCU Ever End? Marvel Studios VP Nate Moore Responds https://www.cbr.com/will-mcu-end-marvel-studios-vp-nate-moore/ Marvel Studios' Vice President of Production and Development Nate Moore doesn't see the Marvel Cinematic Universe ending any time soon. Speaking on The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast, Moore believes that the franchise can continue on for "a long time," insisting that the creative teams behind the MCU still have plenty of stories to tell. "To me, Marvel movies are just movies," said the filmmaker. "Our source material is just… It'd be like saying, 'Hey, are movies about books gonna go on forever?' Probably." Despite this confidence, Moore elaborated by emphasizing that Marvel Studios can't rest easy with the established formula. "I think we have to continue to… We can't sit back on our laurels. We can't think we have the answers. We have to continue to push the envelope as far as genre and what we're willing to explore." This week the world marks Save the Vaquita Day. Our featured article examines a threat to this critically endangered marine mammal (Phocoena sinus), a small porpoise that lives only in the Upper Gulf of California, and of which only 8 remain in the wild. Mongabay reports that a recent CITES decision lifting a prohibition on the export of captive-bred totaoba fish from Mexico could paradoxically spell disaster for vaquitas--which drown in nets that are set to capture the fish illegally, to feed a black market which will likely continue to thrive if a legal trade in farmed totoaba is established.
