Vaquita warns us about sharks: lessons for the ocean's future

Vaquita stands as one of the rarest marine mammals on Earth, with fewer than 20 left in the wild. In this episode, we explore what the near-extinction of the vaquita teaches us about the future of sharks and why their survival is critical to the health of the ocean. Sharks play an essential role in keeping marine ecosystems balanced, yet they face many of the same threats that doomed the vaquita: bycatch, overfishing, and weak enforcement. This episode dives into the parallels, the urgency of acting before it is too late, and how the loss of sharks would ripple into every part of our lives, from food security to coastal protection. I've been looking forward to today's episode for a really long time - and for two great reasons. One, it's about wildlife forensics, which is an immense field that requires knowledge of everything from wildlife behavior and morphology, to DNA, to crime scene investigation, to policy and the law. I've always been a bit of a generalist who likes to deep dive into topics on occasion…so this is a field true to my heart. And the second reason I've been looking forward to it is the guest - forensic wildlife biologist Ashley Bray. As you'll hear, Ashley - in addition to being a forensic wildlife biologist - is also a podcaster. And her podcast is a slant on human/wildlife conflict - with - as you might expect from a forensic biologist - with a true crime twist. Oh - it's called Get Out Alive - be sure to check it out.Today we take a broad look at what forensic wildlife biology entails, and the surprising connections it reveals, such as the connection between wildlife crimes and drug and human trafficking - and organized crime in general.Ashley has a few nice case examples that we review. And hold tight - you're going to learn about a super cute animal called a vaquita. So, get ready for a wide ranging discussion with forensic wildlife biologist Ashley Bray. Charles and Jon talk to Dr Barbara Taylor (USA) and Dr Lorenzo Rojas-Bracho (Mexico), who together lead the global efforts to save the Vaquita from extinction. The Vaquita, a tiny and beautiful porpoise, is found only at the top of the Gulf of California and holds the unfortunate distinction of being the world's rarest marine mammal (possibly the rarest of any mammal species). There may be as few as 6 animals left alive. The story of the Vaquita's precipitous decline from its discovery in 1958 is as tragic as it is complex. In a fascinating conversation we learn about the Vaquita's biology and how gillnetting has driven the species to the very edge of extinction. We also discuss why illegal fishing - fueled by organized crime and a demand in East Asia for the swim bladder of the Totoaba fish - is so difficult to prevent. But Barb and Lorenzo offer some optimism for the future: there may be more Vaquitas hiding in the Gulf of California and it is not to late to save the species. For more information visit www.mammalwatching.com/podcastNotes: There is a lot more information online. Viva Vaquita is a coalition of scientists, educators and conservationists who strive to increase attention on the Vaquita. They host an International Vaquita Day every year to update folks on the latest situation. There are several documentaries about the Vaquita story including Sea of Shadows which you can find here https://www.vaquitacpr.org The IUCN's Cetacean Specialist Group website has all recent Vaquita survey reports (with 2024 coming soon) as well as reports from the recovery team (CIRVA).If you would like to help save the Vaquita you can donate money to - or volunteer to join - Sea Shepherd the conservation society who are doing very important work in the Gulf of Mexico to help tackle the illegal fishing that is killing the species. If you want to check whether the seafood you eat is sustainable then you can visit Seafood Watch even if they do not as yet carry information about the fisheries that most impact the Vaquita.Jon's report on joining the 2024 Vaquita Survey with Barb and Lorenzo is here. Finally here is the Guardian article on the 6 million antelope migration in South Sudan that Charles mentions at the start.Cover art: Barb, Lorenzo and a model Vaquita with Consag Rock in the background.Dr Charles Foley is a mammalwatcher and biologist who, together with his wife Lara, spent 30 years studying elephants in Tanzania. The size of whales varies greatly depending on the species! They range from tiny to truly enormous, with the smallest being only 8.5 feet long and 300 pounds, and the largest, the blue whale, reaching a whopping 100 feet long and 200 tons. Here's a quick breakdown of whale size diversity: Smallest: Vaquita - 8.5ft, 300lbs Medium: Humpback whale - 40-50ft, 70,000lbs Largest: Blue whale - 80-100ft, 200 tons (equivalent to 3 school buses!) To put these sizes in perspective, here are some comparisons: Blue whale (largest): As long as 3 school buses or a Boeing 737 airplane! Humpback whale (medium): As long as 2 double-decker buses! Vaquita (smallest): About the size of a large dolphin or a refrigerator! It's truly amazing how diverse whales are in size and how some of them reach such incredible proportions.

But some people are attempting to stop these crimes: We follow the investigations of two private-citizen sleuths, one using satellites to expose massive but previously untraceable illegal fleets, another using spycraft to infiltrate a criminal network of poachers and smugglers operating on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. This episode features Sara Mitchell, professor of political science at the University of Iowa; as well as Jaeyoon Park of Global Fishing Watch and Andrea Crosta, founder and Executive Director of Earth League International.

Dr. Marcela Vásquez-León is the Director of the Center for Latin American Studies and Professor of Anthropology in the School of Anthropology, University of Arizona. She has conducted research and outreach for over two decades with smallholder agricultural and fishing communities throughout Latin America and the U.S. Southwest. Her focus includes collective organization, common property resources, and rural development. In this episode of the JSW Radio Podcast, we speak with Dr. Vásquez-León about the impact of efforts to protect the endangered vaquita marina on fishing communities in Mexico's upper Gulf of California. Scientists and international non-profit organizations, working in tandem with the Mexican government, have invested significant intellectual, financial, and human resources in the upper gulf and on the vaquita. Vásquez-León argues, however, that their efforts have resulted in the near total collapse of what was once a robust fisheries economy and, thus far, have produced few demonstrable successes. Her analysis of the situation, based on years of work with local fishing communities, points to the disparities and injustices that so often result from conservation programs that focus on protecting a single species without considering the deeply entangled “natures” and “cultures” that such efforts both affect and produce. Ultimately, it is not an argument against protecting ecologies and environments but rather a push for a view and approach that considers relationships between human and non-human worlds.
