Ever since moving to Christchurch I have been trapping pests: stoats and possums, rats and mice. Think Predator-Free New Zealand!  Mice are quite common here on the Port Hills; rather rural with heaps of herbage, seeds, and grasses, plus good seed crops in the gardens.  Mice are an important food source for rats and stoats. They also eat heaps of Native New Zealand Invertebrates (caterpillars, beetles, weevils).  In summer the mice have a great time, breeding like mice.  In autumn the wusses get a bit cold and look for shelter in people's homes and ceilings as well garages.  I have about 10 mouse traps employed and they're going off regularly. Big populations at the moment, be warned!  A few weeks ago, I attended a lecture by Pete McClelland, one of New Zealand's unsung heroes when it comes to pest eradication. Pete has been managing huge projects on Subantarctic Islands and Tropical islands for many years.  Fascinating stuff and very much one of the inspirational tools to create a Predator-Free Aotearoa.  Of course, he was always dealing with the famous exotic pests that somehow gained entrance to an ecosystem that never had those pests before. From Donkeys to Deer and from Ferrets to Rodents, Feral Cats to Foxes and Rats to Mice.  Mice are often seen as the small (almost cute) creature that is probably the least impactful pest on the world list.  Many people would be surprised to learn that these ubiquitous mice (Mus musculus) are a complete pain on many isolated islands in Hawaii (Midway atoll), Gough Island (in the south Atlantic), Marion Island (in the Southern part of the Indian Ocean), to name just a few important Nature reserves with Albatrosses and other ornithological gems.  The mice on these islands have climbed up the ladder of the ecosystem so cleverly that they can attack huge albatrosses at night (while they are incubating their eggs). They do this by chewing open the tops of the birds' heads, eating the brains and simply keep on extending the damage, which ultimately becomes fatal for those birds.  Should you wish to see the horrific pictures of these massacres, caused by, simply google the names of these islands and the words “mice”  Summing up:  Not uncommon on islands, those adaptable mice, causing ecological damage, and oh yes, New Zealand is an island too, remember!  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"All of us involved in the project are driven by the opportunity to make a real difference for this special part of the planet." Eradicating giant mice from South Africa's Marion Island, a vital haven for seabirds. The vast, wild Southern Ocean is home to albatrosses, petrels and other remarkable seabirds which wander for years on end in search of food. Only to breed do the seabirds of the Southern Ocean need land, of which there are just a handful of tiny specs. One of these is South Africa's distant Marion Island, which has become overrun by invasive mice, introduced inadvertently by sailors at least two centuries ago. The mice eat the eggs, young and even the adult seabirds. Now Anton Wolfaardt of BirdLife South Africa and his team have a wild plan to eradicate the mice, with the hope that it will allow seabirds to surge back to their historic abundance. Can an albatross detect illegal fishing vessels? Findings from published research say yes: over the course of six-months, 169 albatrosses fitted with radar-detecting trackers covered 47 million square kilometers of the southern Indian Ocean found radar signals from 353 ships. Many of these vessels had no AIS signal, which is an indicator that a ship has switched it off in an attempt to remain hidden, but little did they know that the albatrosses revealed them. Sunflower Radio Promo (1970) The Beach Boys - Slip On Thru (Instrumental backing and backing vocals ) (1970)  The Beach Boys - Forever (1970)  The Beach Boys - Til I Die (vocals only) (1971) The Beach Boys - Add Some Music To Your Day (1970)  The Beach Boys - Seasons In The Sun (1971) Originally titled "Le Moribund" ("The Dying Person"), it was a huge hit for Terry Jacks in 1973, who had previously been part of a husband-wife band called The Poppy Family. The Poppy Family had a sitar player in the band. Four people. One was a sitar player. ANYHOO, Jacks tried repeating his luck by recording another Brel song, "Ne Me Quitte Pas", as "If You Go Away", but as the French say, "La foudre ne frappe jamais deux fois." Wikipedia: The first version of the song was recorded by Jacques Brel, who also wrote it in a brothel in Tangiers. Sung in a marching tempo, it tells of a man dying of a broken heart and shows him saying his last farewells to his close friend Emile, a priest friend, an acquaintance named Antoine, and his wife who has cheated on him numerous times with Antoine. Despite knowing of Antoine being his wife's lover, he wishes no ill upon him but tells him to take care of his wife. The American poet Rod McKuen translated the lyrics to English. In 1964, the Kingston Trio first recorded an English version of "Seasons in the Sun", which was later heard by Terry Jacks and became the basis for his rendition. Jacks rewrote the lyrics, although he is uncredited for it. He justifies the rewriting by stating that he deemed the original version and its translations to be "too macabre". The inspiration for the rewritten lyrics was a close friend of his who was suffering from acute leukemia and died four months later. The Terry Jacks rendition, which was later dedicated to the friend, has the dying man giving his last words to his loved ones with whom he shared his life, much like the original. However, unlike the Jacques Brel version, the man does not die broken-hearted but instead, acknowledges the rights and wrongs of his actions in life as he passes away peacefully. In the rewritten version, the man first addresses his close friend, whom he had known since childhood, and reminisces the happy times they had such as playing and studying together ("climbed hills and trees", "learned of love and ABC's"), and friendships with others ("skinned our hearts and skinned our knees"). He then addresses his father, who tried to give him a good upbringing and exert a positive influence on his undisciplined life ("I was the black sheep of the family", "You tried to teach me right from wrong", "wonder how I got along") which included overindulgence, vices, and revelry ("too much wine and too much song"). The man finally addresses "Michelle", possibly his daughter or niece, and stating how she lifted his spirit up in times of despair. Before he dies in peace, the man reminds all three that he will always be alive in their hearts and will be present in spirit when they see people or visit places; pretty girls (old and new friends) for the close friend, young children playing for the father, and flower fields for Michelle. This version is actually produced for The Beach Boys BY Jacks. He produced this one song and they gave him the heave-ho. Maybe he said, "I'll produce, but there's this song I wrote called 'Put The Bone In' which you might like." They have been entertaining alternately between the Montauk Golf & Racquet Club and Gurney's Inn for the past three years. Off-season, Bill and Lisa perform on cruise ships, including trips to the South Pacific and the Orient."   Kool and the Gang - Raw Hamburger (1969) Formed by Robert "Kool" Bell, his brother Ronald Bell and a bunch of their New Jersey teenage friends in the mid-60s (then called the Jazziacs), Kool & the Gang played traditional jazz in regional venues for several years, slowly morphing their style to incorporate emerging funk sounds of Sly and the Family Stone and James Brown. They were signed by the De-Lite label in the early '70s and gathered a small but loyal national following (in particular for their 1971 release Live at the Sex Machine). The group's fortunes exploded in 1974 with Wild and Peaceful, an infectiously raw album that spawned three smash hits, "Funky Stuff," "Hollywood Swinging," and "Jungle Boogie," all featuring great instrumentation and lyrics virtually shouted by the group. However, as quickly as they rode to fame, Kool & the Gang faded, their rough sound appearing out of place against the slick, dance-oriented sounds that began to dominate popular radio in the late '70s. And then they broke up, never to be heard from again.  Kool and the Gang  - Country Junkie (1972)  Looking Glass - Sweet Something (1973)

Bird Podcast

This episode is about striated caracaras, or rather, one man's obsession with them.  The man in question is Jonathan Meiburg who is a musician, author and bird lover.  In 1833, a young Charles Darwin was astonished by a strange animal he met in the Falkland Islands: a handsome, social, and oddly crow-like falcon that was “tame and inquisitive,” “quarrelsome and passionate,” and so insatiably curious that it stole hats, compasses, and other valuables from the crew of the Beagle. Darwin met many unusual creatures in his five-year voyage, but no others showed an interest in studying him—and he wondered why these birds were confined to islands at the tip of South America, sensing a larger story. But he set this mystery aside, and never returned to it. Almost two hundred years later, Meiburg picks up where Darwin left off. These rare and unusual birds—now called striated caracaras—still exist, and A Most Remarkable Creature reveals the wild and fascinating story of their history, origins, and possible futures in a series of travels throughout South America, from the fog-bound coasts of Tierra del Fuego to the tropical forests of Guyana. Along the way, Meiburg draws us into the life and work of W.H. Hudson, a Victorian writer and naturalist who championed caracaras as unsung wonders of the natural world, and takes us to falconry parks in England, where captive caracaras perform incredible feats of memory, problem-solving, and friendship. A Most Remarkable Creature is much more than a book about birds: it's a quest for moments of first contact between humans and animals, science and religion, and the mismatched continents Europeans mistakenly called the New World.  In 1997, Jonathan Meiburg received a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship to travel to remote communities around the world, a year-long journey that sparked his enduring fascination with islands, birds, and the deep history of the living world. Since then, he's written reviews, features, and interviews for print and online publications including The Believer, Talkhouse, and The Appendix on subjects ranging from a hidden exhibit hall at the American Museum of Natural History to the last long-form interview with author Peter Matthiessen. But he's best known as the leader of the band Shearwater and as a member of Sub Pop recording artists Loma, whose albums and performances have often been praised by NPR, The New York Times, The Guardian, and Pitchfork. His unique career between the sciences and the arts makes him an ideal guide for a journey that takes in the deep history and landscapes of an entire continent, from the lush forests of Guyana to the windswept Falkland Islands. He lives in central Texas. “Caracaras are not like other birds, or even other birds of prey. Curious, wide-ranging, gregarious, and intelligent, the ten species of caracara are a scientific puzzle that has intrigued biologists since the days of Darwin. And this book — as curious, wide-ranging, gregarious, and intelligent as its subject — is not like any other book that I have encountered.” Charles C. Mann, author of 1491.  Image credit: Bryan C. Parker Summary of the episode 1:00 What are Caracaras? 3:00 Falklands from Tierra del Fuego. 5:25: Bird life in the Falklands per Darwin. This episode, we're talking about one of the most majestic and mystical birds in the world. From escaping half acre kelp patches that stop the boat to coping with Christmas alone I explain what it is to sail around the bottom of the world for the fist time and share some of the uniques sights that only a handful of people get to see like the huge Albatrosses that hover over the boat for days on end. STORY TRANSCRIPT Far up north there was a land wrapped in a perpetual winter - nothing but snow and ice. The people in that land struggled to find food and warmth because the sea was barren and the animals of the land hid in deep caves. As a result, the people were cold and hungry and in a family, one more child can often prove to be one child too many. So it was with one such family - a mother, a father and three children. During a particularly cold stretch, the two parents got together and discussed which child they should get rid of. After much discussion, they decided that their oldest daughter, Ronan, the one who asked too many questions, who had too many opinions... that's the one who should go. So the father went to the cliffs at the edge of the barren sea and made a deal with the skies. The next day, Ronan's parents sent her to the cliffs on the edge of the barren sea and told her to collect firewood. Ronan was surprised. There was no firewood to be found on the cliffs, but it would give her a break from the tedium of her household chores and her parent's bickering, so she went. Now when she got there, she saw far out to sea, there was a boat. It was, even from a distance, a most remarkable boat. The sails were white, and it was lined with furs, and best of all, there was a smell of hot, fresh food. And on the boat was a man. He was tall and strong and looked like his skin had soaked in the sun. The man waved to Ronan. He asked her if she wanted to travel to a land where there was sun and warmth and food. Ronan didn't think twice. She waved the man ashore, and she got on the boat. But no sooner had the man left the shore than he raised his arms to the sky where they turned from limbs to mightily wings. Instead of resting on a bed of fur, she was clinging to sharp, hard talons. A powerful albatross swept to the sky carrying Ronan with him. They flew to the cliffs on the far side of the land where he dropped her into a nest full of screaming chicks. Ronan realised immediately what her parents had done. So from the nest, she began to cry and wail, begging her parents to bring her back. After a whole year, the parents finally accepted that they couldn't manage without Ronan, so her father got in his boat and sailed across the long, barren ocean to the cliffs where he rescued Ronan from the Albatrosses nest. But it didn't take long for the Albatross to realise that Ronan was gone. He swept across the ocean until he found the small boat. He cursed Ronan's father for breaking the deal: "You told me if I took her, she'd take care of my chicks!" The Albatross was so angry he dived into the sea and swirled it into a fury causing waves ten feet high to crash over the small boat. In order to save himself, the father threw Ronan overboard hoping to appease the Albatross. But Ronan swam to the surface and clung to the boat. Her father took out his knife and stabbed her hands. Ronan fell into the... Support this podcast

On this edition of Nature’s Voice Jane Markham talks to marine biologists Titus Shaanika from the ATF team in Namibia and Cristian Suazo in Chile about their work with the fishing industry to try to reduce the number of Albatrosses killed as a ‘bycatch’. She also meets the RSPB’s Nina da Rocha the Albatross Task Force Project officer to find out more about the task force’s role since it was set up and looks forward to further success in the future.

Albatrosses are giant flying seabirds that inhabit the southern oceans. Many species have been studied intensively over decades on their breeding grounds in the sub-Antarctic and the Pacific. Clever studies involving satellite tracking and simple observations from ships have shown they can disperse and forage across the whole of the southern ocean. Monitoring of their populations has shown a marked decline in their numbers since the 1980's so much so all albatross species are now threatened. A key cause of albatross decline was found quickly after the decline in populations was noticed; long-line fishing hooks baited with squid and floating on the surface after being deployed was an easy meal for an ocean scavenger and often their last. Shared Planet visits this story many years after it broke to report a cautious success on the high level conservation measures that were put in place involving biologists and the fishing industry.

Nearly two million birds call it home for much of each year, including the world's largest population of Laysan Albatrosses, or "gooney birds". Hawaiian monk seals, green sea turtles and spinner dolphins frequent Midway's crystal blue lagoon. Midway became an "overlay" refuge in 1988, while still under the primary jurisdiction of the Navy. With the closure of Naval Air Facility Midway Island in 1993, there began a transition from bullets to birds, a change in mission from national defense to wildlife conservation.
