This week Diarmuid Gavin tells us the history of Derek Jarman's garden Prospect Cottage. Derek Jarman was never a man to follow convention. A filmmaker, artist, writer, and activist, his life was one of relentless creativity and defiance. his artistic journey took an unexpected turn when he found himself on the windswept shingle of Dungeness, a desolate landscape on the Kent coast, dominated by a looming nuclear power station and battered by salt-laden winds. Most people would have seen it as barren, inhospitable. Jarman saw possibility. When he overheard talk of a small black fisherman's cottage for sale, he bought it on impulse and named it Prospect Cottage

Peter Halil There are two segments in this episode. The first guest, Peter Halil, was a lighthouse keeper in the UK from 1974 to 1997. He was among the country's final traditional lighthouse keepers before all the lights were automated. He was stationed at some well known light stations in England and Wales, including South Bishop, Dungeness, St. Catherines, Bishop Rock, the Lizard, and others. Peter interviewed Prince Phillip (master of Trinity House, the UK lighthouse service) in 1995 During his final years as a keeper, he visited as many lighthouses as possible before they were automated. He shot video at the lighthouses including walk-throughs, footage of the keepers at work, and, when possible, interviews with keepers. In recent years he's gone back and edited the videos and posted them on his YouTube channel, which you can access at youtube.com/@PeterHalil. This is part one of a two part interview. Candice Simeoni The guest for our special "Be a Lighthouse" segment is Candice Simeoni, who is a police officer in the southern Maine community of Kennebunk. Candice runs the Golden Ornament Project, which benefits local senior citizens in the holiday season. She is also known as the Sugar Angel, for reasons that are explained in the interview.

Turn right off the towpath beside the Military Canal, cross the footbridge, locate the stile that leads onto the hill, then follow the rough footpath up into some impressive edgeland. It's rough. Grassy. Very thistly. And as you ascend it feels hard. Increasingly wild. It's somewhere up here, we say, striding firm against the gradient. But the thing's not marked on the map.   The Sound Mirror of Hythe is a large concrete parabolic dish. A giant ear, pointed out to sea, designed a hundred years ago, pre-RADAR for the early detection of incoming aircraft. Surely, we puff, a structure like this must stand out like a sore thumb? Well no. The steep ground has twists and folds. Ridges and bends that have to be walked. And no military installation worth its salt, however obsolete, is or should ever be easy to find.  We eventually see huddled low in the grass a squat blockhouse. A derelict radio receiving station, according to one historical website. Then we see the dish itself. A concrete shape, nestled against a steep bank, sadly now in a terrible state, trees growing up through its collapsing sections. Up close the dish is behind substantial chainwire fencing and surrounded by what amounts to a moat of evil shoulder high stinging nettles. Whatever evidence there may be of the 'listening chamber' said to reside at the foot of the structure, is not possible to see. It may indeed be buried under broken concrete.  We stood for a long time. Taking it all in. Despite its state, this dish is still active. Still reflecting and to some extent shaping the aural soundscape around it. Of course only from the listening chamber could one be an ear witness to what this structure was properly designed to do, but knowing that on some level it is still working, still channeling the soundscape from the sky above the sea, is, in a quiet way, thrilling. We found some shelter for the Lento box behind the radio receiving station, angling its view up the hill to capture both the near and far soundscapes. Near, wild wind whips through the edgeland grasses, a few crickets are cricketing. Mid-distance left, the sound mirror, about 40 yards. You can hear the wind when it catches in the trees growing in and around the dish and sometimes a yellowhammer. Right of scene is the hill rolling down into the valley. At the bottom the military canal. What filters in from behind the Lento box is from the coast and the ocean view. Toot toot of the steam railway that runs from Hythe, Dymchurch, Romney and Dungeness. Occasional distant echoes from circling seagulls and a construction site. Listening back we think some of these sounds at least are being reflected off the dish itself.

The landscape of Dungeness, at the south-eastern tip of England, is an unusual one. In this programme, Helen Mark finds out about stories surrounding sound and light on this peninsula which juts out into the English Channel. She visits the huge concrete "sound mirrors" - built in the 1920s as an early detection system for incoming enemy planes. Their technology became obsolete as aircraft speeds increased and radar was invented. They still stand today, but are now part of a nature reserve. Helen finds out how they worked, and experiences for herself their eerie sound projection abilities. She also learns about the wildlife which now thrives around them. A few miles further south, Helen visits the old lighthouse - one of five lighthouses which Dungeness has had in its time. The area stands on vast ever-shifting banks of shingle, which have expanded seawards over the years, leaving previous lighthouses stranded too far from the sea. The construction of a nuclear power station in the 1950s also obscured the lighthouse then in use, so it was decommissioned in 1960 and is now a tourist attraction. Helen walks up its 169 steps to the top and talks to the current owner, whose father bought it on a whim at an auction. In this programme Helen experiences the distinctive sounds of Dungeness - from the magic of the sound mirrors and the whistle of the tourist steam train to the ever-present crunch and rattle of the shingle underfoot. In this pancake flat landscape, sound and light both seem to move in mysterious ways. Produced by Emma Campbell

Could sea otters be reintroduced to Oregon?

In June, a team from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently traveled to Astoria, Newport and other coastal towns in Oregon and Northern California to meet with community members about the possible reintroduction of sea otters to Oregon and Northern California. Starting in the 1700s, the marine mammals were nearly hunted to extinction from Alaska to California for the maritime fur trade, and disappeared from Oregon’s coastal waters in the early 1900s.   Last year, the USFWS released a report which found that reintroducing sea otters would be “biologically feasible,” and could help restore kelp forests, along with other benefits to the nearshore environment. But big challenges and uncertainties remain, including the impact on the Dungeness crab and other fisheries. Joining us to talk about this issue is Michele Zwartjes, supervisor for the Oregon Coast Field Office of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.  We also hear from the Elakha Alliance, a nonprofit based in Siletz that has been advocating for more than five years for the return of sea otters to the Oregon coast, including publishing its own reintroduction feasibility study in 2021. Jane Bacchieri is the executive director of the Elakha Alliance. Peter Hatch is an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians and a secretary and board member of the Elakha Alliance. They join us to talk about the cultural importance of sea otters to Indigenous communities, and what their return would signify.

Researchers at Oregon State University recently published a study showing that the use of a metal bar placed at a certain height on a commercial fishing vessel can significantly reduce repetitive motion injuries sustained by deckhands during the Dungeness crabbing season. It's one example of how the Fishermen Led Injury Prevention Program, which was launched at OSU nearly a decade ago, is helping fishermen reduce injuries in an industry where hazards abound, from falls on a slippery deck to vessel disasters on the high seas. After hearing from fishermen that first aid training needs to be relevant for their industry, FLIPP partnered with Oregon Sea Grant to develop a first aid training course that is being taught to fishing crews in Oregon, and has now expanded to training sessions in Washington and California. Laurel Kincl is an associate professor of environmental and occupational health at Oregon State University, and Poggy Lapham is a commercial fisherman based in Newport. They join us to talk about efforts to make fisheries in Oregon and the West Coast safer through the work of FLIPP.

What does dog agility have to do with spiritual growth?Well, potentially a lot! Pamela Ziemann shares her experience with dog agility and highlights the importance of the connection and trust between the dog and handler in the sport and how it's led to her own spiritual growth. She also discusses how dysfunction in any relationship can affect other areas of life, as she discovered with her codependent tendencies affecting her agility performance. Pamela talks about how agility has led to personal development in other areas of her life, such as learning to let go of control and focusing on the present moment. She believes that any activity, including agility, can offer a spiritual curriculum for personal growth.Pamela also emphasizes the benefits of allowing more space in life and not being afraid of a seemingly “boring life”. Listen to hear more about what she suggests happens when we give ourselves space and actions tend to come from an inspired place rather than from our ego.In this episode:How dog agility is more than just running and jumpingWhat is a spiritual curriculumWays to ignite your personal development About Pamela ZiemannPamela has been traveling, living in her van and performing her one-woman show until 2020. In Clallam County, the bustling city of Sequim, the almost abandoned village of Dungeness, and the valley between them are all connected historically, culturally, and economically. The current population of Sequim is 8,048, or more than 20,000 if the surrounding valley is included. Before Sequim was incorporated as a town, Dungeness existed on the Strait of Juan de Fuca, about five miles to the north. It was one of the first Puget Sound ports and enabled the growth of Sequim in the interior. But the S'Klallam Tribe inhabited this confined area of woodland and prairie between the Olympic Mountains and the Strait of Juan de Fuca long before either town arose.Listen now to learn more about this fascinating Evergreen State area!A special thank you goes out to Al Hirsch for providing the music for the podcast, check him out on YouTube.Find merchandise for the podcast now available at:     https://washington-history-by-jon-c.creator-spring.comIf you enjoy the podcast and would like to contribute, please visit: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/EvergreenpodIf you have any questions, episode ideas you'd like to see explored, or just have a general comment, please reach out at Historyoftheevergreenstatepod@gmail.comTo keep up on news for the podcast and other related announcements, please like and follow:https://www.facebook.com/HistoryoftheevergreenstatepodcastThank you for listening!

Fresh crab will be hitting the docks this weekend, after the Dungeness crab season opened on the North Coast with historically low prices. Fishermen will be selling at $2.25 a pound, which is less than half of last year's price. Lauren Schmitt, of KMUD news, spoke with Harrison Ibach, President of the Humboldt Fishermen's Marketing Association as he was setting pots on Tuesday. While crab boats contended with rough weather in the Humboldt Bay this week, residents at Creekside Cabins, a community on privately-owned land north of Willits, are still living with the aftermath of the most recent winter storms. Code enforcement declared a public nuisance at the property last week, due to a sinkhole that blocked vehicle access to the property. County social workers are scheduled to be on site today to advise residents. According to a county press release, an exit-only temporary bridge is due to be installed next week. The only vehicles that will be allowed to enter the property will be those that are there to remove things. The press release states that “At this time there is no existing plan for permanent access to the site, so this will seriously compromise the ability of sewer, garbage and emergency response to provide service to the site.” And OptumServe, a state-provided covid testing service that has also offered covid treatment, is ending its services in Mendocino County. The site at the Ukiah fairgrounds closed yesterday, while the site at the Veterans Services building in Fort Bragg is scheduled to close next Tuesday.
