You've been there: You look up and realize you did it again—that thing you know you shouldn't do and said you'd never do again. But here you are. And for a moment, it felt good—until it didn't. The guilt, shame and regret kicked in so quick. And the fallout was far worse than you thought. Why do we all do this? Why do we continue to take the bait, even when we see the hook? When fully incorporated add the lemon juice and check seasoning. This is more than you need for the crab but store in the fridge for up to a week.Crab salad 200g white crab meat 100ml of mayonnaise 2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill – keep a few fronds for on top Zest of lemon from above Salt and pepper to taste Pick through the crab in case there's any rogue shells. Mix in the remaining ingredients and check seasoning.Pickled radish 10 radishes, finely sliced 2 shallots, finely sliced 50ml cider or white wine vinegar 50ml water 2 teaspoons castor sugar ½ teaspoon salt Place the vinegar, water, sugar and salt in a pan and cook until sugar has dissolved. Mix the radishes and shallots in a bowl and add the pickle liquor. Chill for a few hours, giving the odd stir. What you don't use can be stored in the fridge in a clean jam jar. Savoury French toast 1 brioche loaf cut into rectangles ( make breadcrumbs from trimmings) 2 eggs 100ml milk 50g butter Whisk the eggs and milk together and season with salt and pepper. Dip the bread in ensuring its covered. Melt the butter in a pan ( you might want to do this in two batches and keep cooked warm in the oven). Christina shares highlights from this year's Green Crab Week, an island-wide initiative focused on managing the invasive European green crab population. Veteran astrologer and Mystical Messages podcast host Hilary Harley shares her cosmic forecast for the month of August 2025.  Messenger Mercury is retrograde as the month opens, allowing plenty of time to rest, re-set and relax. If you haven't taken vacation yet this summer, the first part of August is the perfect time to refresh yourself.  Manage your expectations about how much you will accomplish during the first ten days of August.  Under the spotlight of the full moon in radical Aquarius on Saturday, August 9th, Mercury turns direct motion the very next day.  Sunday, August 10th we can begin moving forward with signing major documents, purchasing large ticket items or booking travel plans.  Leo Mercury aligns helpfully to Neptune and Saturn in Aries pushing us to take risks and go for it!  It is especially safe to do so now that both Valuable Venus and Generous Jupiter are in nurturing Cancer the Crab.  This duo has our back and acts as a guardian angel.  Watch for silver linings. Our grand designs are called into sharp focus at the New Moon on Saturday, August 23rd.  In practical Virgo, both Sun and Moon prompt us to get real, to make a plan and execute our ideas.  Remember to hand write 3-5 goals or intentions that you seek to manifest.  Plant these in the warm, soft earth to manifest over the coming month or season.    To reach Hilary Harley: www.hilaryharley.com http://www.hilaryharley.com/ Hilary@hilaryharley.com Facebook:  hilary harley. https://www.facebook.com/hilary.harley.3 hilary harley astrology https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100057501487642  holistic healing https://www.facebook.com/hilaryharley714 Instagram:  hilary.harley https://www.instagram.com/hilary.harley

Tonight, we'll read a story from “Just So Stories” by British author Rudyard Kipling published in 1902 titled “The Crab That Played with the Sea”. The book is a collection of origin stories. Kipling began working on the book by telling the first three chapters as bedtime stories to his daughter Josephine. These had to be told "just so" (exactly in the words she was used to) or she would complain. The stories illustrate how animals obtained their distinctive features, such as how the leopard got his spots. This particular story explains the ebb and flow of the tides, as well as how the crab changed from a huge animal into a small one. — read by 'N' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus! And for extra credit, how many crabs per person if they are one of the 1,400 or so at the 80th Annual Rotary Coffee Annapolis Crab Feast on August 1st? SPOILER: The answer is nearly a dozen! Today, we sit down with Lisa Mam, a local realtor and the force behind organizing a feast for over 1,000 people on August 1st. We went from A to Z — from all-you-can-eat to zero waste, and a lot in between. What is required to organize this? How many crabs do you need? When does planning start? How many people make it all go? And then we discussed the rewards for the community — grants to non-profit organizations, as well as other Annapolis Rotary initiatives. To be honest, I am not sure what the community would do without them! Tickets are now on sale online, and some will also be available at the gate on August 1st. Have a listen! Rough Draft Outline: The Greater Portland Crab CaperOverall Synopsis: "The Greater Portland Crab Caper" is a multi-generational mnemonic mystery spanning over six decades (1960-2025 and beyond). It charts the escalating rivalry between two prominent Portland marine industry families, the Crabbes (Eastern Promenade, led by Carlton "Carl" Crab) and the Fishers (Western Promenade, led by Codman "Cod Fish"). What begins with local trap pilfering in 1960 evolves into a worldwide web of espionage, cyber-attacks, and the mysterious disappearance of Codman Fisher, with Carl Crab emerging as the prime suspect. The story uses Portland's iconic four quadrants as a living memory palace, aiding both the characters and the reader in unraveling the intricate deceit.Chapter 1: The First Spark (1960)Core Focus: Establish the foundational rivalry, introduce young Carl Crab and Codman Fisher, detail their fateful first encounter, and introduce the mysterious "gizmo" that hints at future escalation. This chapter firmly plants Carl as an early suspect.I. The Morning Encounter: Tommy's & Exchange StreetScene: Dawn breaks over Casco Bay. Young (16-year-old) Codman Fisher (Western Prom, subtly academic) and Carlton Crabbe (Eastern Prom, stockier, direct) clash over a breakfast sandwich at Tommy's Post Office Park Take Out Mobile stand. A quick, terse exchange sets the tone for their future.Setting: Vivid description of Tommy's, the sounds and smells of a waking working waterfront on Commercial Street. Emphasize the ordinary setting contrasting with the extraordinary tension.Walk to the Waterfront: Their silent, tense walk down Exchange Street to Moulton Street towards their fathers' fish factories, highlighting their inherited rivalry and the unspoken currents between them.II. The Holyoke Wharf Confrontation & The Glinting GizmoScene: Codman arrives at Fisher-owned Holyoke Wharf to find Carl Crab on a Crabbe Industry marked fishing vessel, hurriedly offloading traps. Carl is seen with a "bright shiny metallic object" glimmering on the traps. The Exchange: Codman questions the "gizmo" and Carl's presence on Fisher property. Carl's defiant retort, "That's something my Dad has been working on!" and "Your Dad doesn't own Casco Bay!" establishes his audacious nature and willingness to cross boundaries. He quickly reverses the boat and flees.Impact: This scene solidifies Carl's early actions, contributing to his later status as the main suspect for not just local pilfering but the entire escalating caper.III. Foundations of Rivalry: Crabbe vs. Fisher (Expanded Lore)The Crabbe Family (Eastern Prom's Enduring Legacy):Symbolism: Tenacity, guarded nature, ethical ambiguity (crab's hard shell, sideways movement). Connection to marine exploitation.Location: Munjoy Hill/Eastern Promenade – rugged, insular, built through will and cunning.Industry: Cutthroat commercial fishing, evolving into legally dubious conglomerates, shadowy ties to shipping/offshore wind. The "silent operators."Secrets: Tied to Munjoy Hill Reservoir burst (1893) – ancestor possibly benefited illicitly, establishing connection to infrastructure and legacy of exploitation. The Fisher Family (Western Prom's Steadfast Guardians):Symbolism: Tradition, sustainability, ethical approach (Fisher name evoking integrity). Guardians of Portland's maritime soul.Location: Western Promenade – older, established, mercantile/shipping elite, grand historic houses.Personality: Grounded, principled, pursuing sustainable practices, embracing ethical innovation.#GrandpaBillsNovel,#CrabCaperMystery,#PortlandMaine,#MnemonicFiction,#FamilyRivalry,#MaritimeEspionage,#CyberThriller,#DecadesOfDeceit,#CarlCrabSuspect,#CodFishDisappearance,#BHSKKHHHPODCAST#YouTube, #BillHolt, #@billholt8792,#MemoryPalaceNovel,#WorkingWaterfrontNoir,#OldPortSecrets,#WesternPromMystery,#EasternPromIntrigue,

I made it to my final destination of Comox British Columbia where my daughter was joining her boyfriend who had been stationed there earlier this year. A very long trip but they organized for an apartment and everything went very smoothly.  While staying in a hotel before they got their keys, we went out for breakfast to Smitty's (the GF dedicated restaurant in town was too busy to take us which is great for them!) I spoke to the server at Smitty's about gluten free and she was very knowledgeable. I try to order relatively simply when they don't say anything on the menu, but have the knowledge. I had eggs over easy, bacon and potato shreds which were all done on the flattop away from any pancakes. I had a very satisfying and filling breakfast! We were finally able to grocery shop and cook for ourselves which made meals easier in the apartment, but there were still restaurants I wanted to try. We had dinner at a dedicated gluten free restaurant called Off the Hook. Crab cakes are something delicate that I love, but usually can't have, but at this restaurant I could have them and they were terrific! I also had the fish and chips, which were some of the best. I'm so spoiled! My daughter saw a gluten free bakery just outside of Comox on the highway, which she thought I'd be interested in. It was not what I expected – from a storefront perspective – but the food I bought was amazing. They had and extensive line of bread and cookies and tarts and buns all gluten free and also with keto and dairy free in mind. I need to discuss this bakery more with Ellen. My last restaurant stop was at Taco Bandido in Courtney. Most things on the menu could be made gluten free and I was happy when the server said the chef would clean off a portion of the cook top to ensure no gluten came into contact with my tacos. I had the Beef Birria tacos once again to compare them the ones I had in Thunder Bay. Both were great, but these ones were so rich (yummy) that I could only eat half of the order and brought the rest back to the apartment with me. I'm flying home tomorrow but will be recapping my trip with Ellen on a podcast in the next couple of weeks. If you have any questions for me please email them to acdnceliacpodcast@gmail.com. Richard Sorge is one of history's most famous spies. This hard-drinking, womanising, motorcycle-crashing Soviet officer penetrated the German embassy in Tokyo during the 1930s and gathered intelligence credited with changing the course of the Second World War. It is an intriguing tale; but Sorge's spy ring was just one chapter in a much longer history of Russian and Soviet espionage in and against Japan. Cracking the Crab: Russian Espionage Against Japan, from Peter the Great to Richard Sorge (Hurst, 2025) by Dr. James D Brown tells the extraordinary full story of Russian intrigue targeting Japan, from first encounters in the eighteenth century to the Soviet declaration of war in August 1945. Colourful episodes include Gojong, King of Korea, being smuggled into the Russian legation dressed as a woman in 1896; the 1927 ‘Tanaka Memorial', an infamous forgery purporting to be Japan's hidden plan for world domination; and the secret intelligence of ‘Nero', a Soviet agent supplying invaluable insight into Japanese strategy during the Second World War. From Russians murdered in broad daylight in Meiji Tokyo to Soviet honey traps and ‘white magic' at the Battle of Nomonhan, this is a landmark history of the covert struggle between two great powers of the modern age. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars.
