This week, we discuss two films starring friend of the show Philip Seymour Hoffman. The first is Owning Mahowny (2003). The film is based on the true story of Brian Molony, a Toronto bank employee who embezzled more than $10 million to feed his gambling addiction. It was named one of the ten best films of the year by critic Roger Ebert. The second is State and Main (2000), an American comedy film written and directed by David Mamet. The plot sees a movie crew invade a small town whose residents are all too ready to give up their values for showbiz glitz. Sean talks to Jen D'Angelo about the movie State and Main (2000). They discuss the WGA strike, David Mamet, and his portrayal of a writer. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Today we are talking about the 2000 David Mamet film State and Main. The film has a huge ensemble cast including Philip Seymour Hoffman, William H Macy, Alec Baldwin, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rebecca Pidgeon,Clark Gregg, Julia Stiles, Charles Durning, and Patti LuPone. It is a film about a small town that is taken over when a Hollywood film cast and crew descend to produce a film called The Old Mill. As Patti LuPone pointed out it is “an affectionate skewering of the movie business. We do this because we love the business and to see it portrayed in this way is a loving tribute.” Some of our favorite parts of this movie are: The doctor bit throughout the film The spotlight on actors who behave badly The sadness in the film's writer Philip Seymour Hoffman A celebrity sighting near the end of the film Special thanks to our editor Geoff Vrijmoet for this episode and Melissa Villagrana for helping out with our social media posts. Next week's film will be The Player available on HBOMax Subscribe, Rate & Share Your Favorite Episodes! Best friend and painter extraordinaire Hooks shows me one of their favorite nostalgic movies. We watch State and Main and I swoon over romantic lead Philip Seymour Hoffman. We talk about Los Angeles as two transplants and basically decide it's all avocados. Then I show them Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse and confess my love for Nic Cage and Rubick's cubes. I call the movie "Art" way too many times. I learned a lot and I had a great time. BYE FOREVER. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/minute-twenty4/support

P.S. I Love Hoffman: A Film By Film Retrospective of Philip Seymour Hoffman
The State Street that Eddie describes sounds like paradise: burlesque clubs, bars, tattoo shops, arcades, and reasonable hotels. He was always drawn to the action that was just over hill or around the next bend. He found it at on State and Main. It was burned into his memory like a neon sign. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/eric-foemmel/support
Following our visit to David Mamet’s STATE AND MAIN, we head to another small town for a different sort of redemption tale: Martin McDonagh’s THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI. While the two films may not have a whole lot of overlap in terms of plot, they share a theatrical lineage as well as a tweaked view of small-town life, and both feature stacked ensembles with a strong handle on writerly dialogue, all of which we dig into here. Inspired by Martin McDonagh’s new pitch-black comedy THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI, we look back at another playwright-driven film about redemption set in a small town populated by a colorful ensemble: David Mamet’s 2000 comedy STATE AND MAIN. How does the sex scandal at the center of Mamet's film look in a post-Weinstein 2017? What are we to make of the film’s cynicism toward Hollywood and those who populate it? And just what is the deal with that running matzo gag? We discuss all that and more, plus dig into some excellent feedback from recent episodes. P.S. I Love Hoffman: A Film By Film Retrospective of Philip Seymour Hoffman
