In this episode of Journey to the Blue Sky, Patricia and Arun discuss about Blue Sky Studios' last animation film before Fox was bought by Disney and the shutdown of the company, the 2019 animated film Spies in Disguise. Lance Sterling is the greatest secret agent in the H.T.U.V (Honor, Trust, Unity, and Valor) agency. When he returns from a mission of stealing a suitcase containing a drone from a Japanese arm dealer, it's empty. Security camera footage shows Lance stealing the drone while escaping from a helicopter. Lance tries to claim his innocence, but they don't believe him. He then goes into hiding towards one of the former gadget and weapons builders named Walter when he learns that he can make someone disappear. It turns out that the serum Walter was experimenting on wasn't complete and Lance ends up turning into a pigeon. With his new disguise, he and Walter travel around to find out who is impersonating as him. When the film premiered in theaters, it made $171 million dollars out of a $100 million dollar budget making it the lowest grossing Blue Sky Studios film ever made. It received mixed to positive reviews from critics praising the animation and the performances of Will Smith and Tom Holland. What did Arun and Patricia think of Blue Sky Studios' swan song...or pigeon song? Listen and find out. Editor - Randy Trager, ACE NIMONA editor, Randy Trager, ACE makes a return trip to The Rough Cut to share the inside story of how his latest film went from dead on the cutting room floor to live and loud on Netflix. Beginning its development life under the banner of Blue Sky studios and its parent company 21st Century Fox, NIMONA and the rest of the Blue Sky team were moved under Disney during their acquisition of Fox. The film's rocky development road seemingly ended in April 2021 when Disney shuttered Blue Sky. With her relentless, never-say-die attitude, NIMONA found new life again with Annapurna Pictures and Netflix. NIMONA tells the tale of Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed), a knight in a futuristic medieval world, who is framed for a crime he didn't commit. The only one who can help him prove his innocence? Nimona (Chloë Grace Moretz), a mischievous teen with a taste for mayhem - who also happens to be a shapeshifting creature Ballister has been trained to destroy. But with the entire kingdom out to get him, Nimona's the best (and technically the only) sidekick Ballister can hope for. And as the lines between heroes, villains, and monsters start to blur, the two of them set out to wreak serious havoc - for Ballister to clear his name once and for all, and for Nimona to...just wreak serious havoc. RANDY TRAGER, ACE Randy began his editorial journey as an assistant editor on features such as NURSE BETTY (2000), WHAT WOMEN WANT (2000) and MEN IN BLACK II (2002). He then made the move to working in feature animation as an assistant on ROBOTS (2005) until he got bumped up to the editor's chair on RIO (2011), THE PEANUTS MOVIE (2015) and SPIES IN DISGUISE (2019) Editing Nimona In our discussion with NIMONA editor Randy Trager ACE, we talk about: How to pack and unpack an animated feature Keeping the tone light while keeping it real The virtual future of animation studios Voice over and over and over again Breaking the law with needle drops The Credits Visit ExtremeMusic for all your production audio needs Check out what's new with Avid Media Composer Hear Randy discuss his work on Blue Sky's SPIES IN DISGUISE Subscribe to The Rough Cut podcast and never miss an episode Visit The Rough Cut on YouTube

How does the enemy plan to bring us down? Well, he doesn't have any new tricks! Yolande Vincent looks at how Paul addresses the Galatians in Galatians 2:1-6 and how we can learn to deal with two of the enemy's significant strategies: sowing division and robbing us of our freedom in Christ. Take a trip back to 2019 with us as we watch one of Blue Sky Studio's last animated films (now available on Disney+). This fun spy caper stars the charming Will Smith as Agent Lance Sterling and his quirky tech specialist along for the ride is played by Tom Holland. This animated movie is funny and not just for the kiddos, we get to talk about the issue of Black characters turning into animals (too frequently IMO), and the funny dynamics between these two characters. So will this be a movie theatre regret or a Blockbuster (Redbox?) fave? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/loyaloats/message

From Disney’s The Princess and the Frog, to Blue Sky Studios’s Spies in Disguise, to Pixar’s Soul, have you noticed a recurring theme emerging where Black characters turn into creatures or things in animated feature films, and stay in that form for the majority of their time on screen? In our second episode, we dissect why that happens and what elements worked for and against these three films specifically. Is there a fear by major studios that Black people aren’t relatable to a wider audience? Were there instances where the transformation of a character made sense? Jodi and Philip review and discuss 2019 animated action film 'Spies in Disguise' from Blue Sky Studios and 20th Century Fox. Inspired by the animated short film "Pigeon: Impossible," this team-up film presents an unlikely duo in super-spy Lance Sterling and quirky inventor Walter Beckett. Walter's genius is matched only by his oddness, which results in Lance being inadvertently transformed into a pigeon. This is not without its advantages, but it's up to Walter to perfect his formula in order to reverse the process as the duo embark on an adventure to stop a global threat.
