As a special holiday gift to The Film Stage podcast feed, listen to a new Box Office Bonanza! Here we talk about random box office weekends and where they fit into our lives. The movies, the memories! This episode features Dan Mecca, Conor O'Donnell, Mitchell Beaupre, Jordan Raup, and Cory Everett. The box office weekend in question is July 21, 2000. The number one movie in the country was the Robert Zemeckis-directed, Clark Gregg-scripted, Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer-starring supernatural thriller What Lies Beneath. The number three movie was the second Pokémon feature film, Pokémon 2000. Gladiator was still in theaters, so was U-571. But at the start, we mount a passionate defense of the new Zemeckis epic Here, which has now arrived digitally. After that, we talk about Martin Lawrence movies. We talk about how horrible Greg Kinnear's character is in Amy Heckerling's Loser. We talk about Al Pacino's new autobiography Sonny Boy. The sport doc Michael Jordan to the Max gets some discussion. An Office Space reference is completely ignored! There are too many 9/11 jokes! How many? You'll have to listen to find out. We remember that great bit with Ben Stiller and Tom Cruise from the MTV Movie Awards (“He's Harmless”). There's an appreciation of Jesus' Son as well.  There's a Saving Silverman reference, talk of yo-yos and Yu-Gi-Oh! There's a remembrance of that time The Perfect Storm and The Patriot came out the same weekend. Finally, for a few moments I'm convinced that nobody has been recording the podcast!  There's a lot here, people! We're thankful for you listening to us have fun! We hope you have some fun too! Sometimes we learn more from our mistakes than our successes - that's my story and I'm sticking to it this week! Narrative drive is an important storytelling principle to learn and this week's movie is an example of poor story structure resulting in terrible narrative drive. A mystery writer should have control of the information. Valerie's study of conflict triangles was more fruitful than my area of study this week. Writer / Director Josh Margolin is here to discuss turning June Squibb into a nonagenarian action star in Thelma, parental caretaking dynamics, and high speed mobility scooter chases. More about Thelma: The feature directorial debut of Josh Margolin, THELMA is a poignant action-comedy that gives veteran Oscar® nominee June Squibb (NEBRASKA and star of Scarlett Johansson's upcoming directorial debut ELEANOR THE GREAT) her first leading role and features the final performance of trailblazing actor Richard Roundtree (SHAFT). Squibb, who did many of her own stunts in the film, plays Thelma Post, a feisty 93-year-old grandmother who gets conned by a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson (The White Lotus' Fred Hechinger) and sets out on a treacherous quest across Los Angeles, accompanied by an aging friend (Roundtree) and his motorized scooter, to reclaim what was taken from her. Parker Posey, Clark Gregg, and Malcolm McDowell also star. Inspired by a real-life experience of Margolin's own grandmother, THELMA puts a clever spin on movies like MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, shining the spotlight on an elderly grandmother as an unlikely action hero. With infectious humor, Margolin employs the familiar tropes of the action genre in hilarious, age-appropriate ways to tackle aging with agency. In the first leading film role of her 70-year career, Squibb portrays the strong-willed Thelma with grit and determination, demonstrating that she is more than capable of taking care of business – despite what her daughter Gail (Posey), son-in-law Alan (Gregg), or grandson Danny might believe More about Josh Margolin: Josh Margolin is a writer, director, editor and actor from Los Angeles. He co-wrote, edited and starred in the absurdist horror-comedy DEEP MURDER, which premiered at the LA Film Festival in 2018 and ran theatrically before streaming on Paramount+. Previously, Josh co-created the digital series MY BOYFRIEND IS A ROBOT for Freeform, and has developed projects with TBS, Sony Pictures Television, Olive Bridge and Paul Feig's Powderkeg. He performed over 100 shows with One Night Stand: An Improvised Musical, which was produced by Marc Platt and had sold-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival as well as appearances in the The New York Musical Theater Festival and a limited run in Los Angeles. Pull up a stool and lend an ear, because today's episode is brimming with tales you'd expect to overhear at a secluded airport bar. Ever wonder what it's like to serve a drink to the likes of Rob Lowe or share a silent nod with James Marsden? I've got the inside scoop on these starry encounters, plus some not-so-glinting moments, like Steve Harvey's early morning demands. We'll explore the intertwining of fame and humanity—where every pour and tip reveals a narrative etched in the glitz and grit of celebrity life. The glamor isn't confined to the silver screen; sometimes it walks right into your day job. Imagine chatting with Clark Gregg about his Marvel adventures or Patrick Warburton's distinctive voice filling the room. This episode spins a yarn about these moments and more, including a quiet exchange with SNL's Andrew Dismukes and a hearty handshake from country star Pat Green. It's not just the brush with fame that lingers but the humility and warmth these figures exude amidst their travels.Yet the life of an airport bartender isn't always garnished with star sightings. Today, I recount a sobering tale of excess and the shadow it casts over the glitzy encounters. We discuss the pitfalls of substance use, especially in the high-flying context of post-pandemic travel, and the impact it leaves on both the famous and the fans. So, settle in with your drink of choice, as we mix a cocktail of celebrity run-ins and life lessons learned beyond the bar top.Support the Show.

The masterful skill that Robin Williams shows off in his against-type performance as lonesome photo lab tech Sy Parrish, the numerous times when this movie sneaks in brand licensing, the questionable stab that Matthew McConaughey has been taking at the self-help industry, and the irritation that Tyler expresses toward implausible workplace behavior in the film comprise some of the talking points for this episode. Minute Twenty-Nine: From 40 Minutes Out to Coulson's Reassuring WordsJonathan Carlisle from UHF 62nd and The Princess Bride Minute join us in this episode! In the twenty-ninth minute of The Avengers...It's so fun watching Agent Coulson chat with Steve. Well, it's awfully uncomfortable, but Clark Gregg and Chris Evans play the scene perfectly. We talk a bit about the quinjet and how Steve's catching up on yet another example of that fantastic SHIELD tech we just saw Tony using. How does Gregg's acting seem as he gets up from the desk? Too much business? Regardless, his move across the quinjet is perfect. It's another great example of dialogue leading great scenes through complicated exposition. The affair may be over, but oh the guilt! Sam and Chris take on the newest personality for Ms. Hobbes, Mandy the Stewardess; ponder the specifics of Charlotte's bizzare wedding week; and continue to lament the writers giving Samantha nothing to do. And then it's time to bid Aidan a not so fond adieu. It's a lot. Justice for Clark Gregg!
