Hello Everyone! Joining us this week is our friend, author and journalist Luca Perasi! As he celebrates the publication of his latest work "Press To Play | That Unmistakable 80s Sound" chronicling the "hot take" "Love It or Hate It" record that divides McCartney fans nearly 40 years later! One of the more significant people Luca was able to interview for the book was esteemed 1980s Producer Hugh Padgham (Genesis/The Police/Phil Collins) among many others. We know the relationship and direction over the album took many turns and misunderstandings, especially where Eric Stewart comes into the picture. Luca brings up many hypothesis' for these missteps. The book also takes a very detailed technical approach with the album including detail on instruments used as well as the key people that worked on the album (Arrangers, Other Musicians etc). Luca also does a fine job of contextualising the 1980s Pop Culture zeitgeist through the mediums of video games and technology. Congrats again to Luca on his latest book! Emilia Pérez Is The Messiest Movie I've Ever Seen- and It Deserves All the Hate It's Getting...In Today's video I will be deep diving into all the reasons the movie musical Emilia Pérez is under fire in all types of communities recently for being an offensive and tone-deaf mess. After clips that went viral on tiktok of Selena Gomez' bad spanish accent, to cringey dances and musical lyrics- people were shocked that this trainwreck of a film was being made and even praised. Especially its being inaccurate in their depiction of latino culture and other marginalized communities, and why latino people everywhere on tiktok, youtube and even the news are mad at this film. From the producer being terrible behind the scenes, having bad writing, confusing horrible plot devices, to major casting problems- such as Selena Gomez being casted in a problematic role in which she can't speak the language and the role reinforcing bad stereotypes about latino people. People are also upset that this movie musical won over Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo's Wicked, despite Emilia Pérez having the worst music ever heard in a musical. Jeff and Phil welcome comedian Ronny Chieng to discuss his latest Netflix special Love to Hate It. He talks about his efforts to harvest his wife's eggs (with no medical training whatsoever), the frustrating susceptibility of baby boomers to internet scams, his near-decade-long tenure as a correspondent on The Daily Show, and why the only career move he's concerned with is crafting the next joke. Plus: The Good, The Bad, and The WTF of making Love to Hate It.
When Trevor Noah stepped down as host of ‘The Daily Show' a couple of years ago, it didn't even occur to Ronny Chieng that he could be capable of taking over that seat. But now that he's been sitting in as guest-host as part of a rotating group of correspondents he finally feels like he deserves to be there. “I think I get how to do it,” he says. “And I've done it like 20 times now, so it's definitely possible for me to do it.” In his return to the podcast, Chieng discusses the process of putting together his third stand-up special for Netflix, ‘Love to Hate It,' which includes material about possibly becoming a father, how the internet is destroying male brains, and making “MAGA friends” in Hawaii. He also talks about grabbing the “fearless mantle” from heroes like Jon Stewart, being the first late-night host to joke about the UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting, and how he thinks ‘The Daily Show' will evolve when Donald Trump takes back the White House in 2025.
