In the aftermath of the First World War, French philosopher Simone Weil had a solution to address the fascism that surged across Europe: abolish political parties. She argued political parties were not democratic, they were dangerous. With the help of former politician Michael Ignatieff and other guests, IDEAS producer Nicola Luksic explores the radical thinking of Simone Weil to help us better understand the current political climate. We'd love to hear from you! Background - All of us have heard about the tragic and senseless assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. This is tragic on many different fronts. 1. An innocent man was murdered. 2. A wife and two young children are without their husband and father. 3. A nation is divided like we haven't seen in decades. How should we approach disagreement with our neighbor?Aligning political views with God's ways is a process that involves prioritizing faith over ideology, grounding decisions in biblical principles, and engaging with humility and love. This approach shifts focus from seeking partisan victory to seeking a kingdom-minded perspective that reflects Christ's character. Prioritize a kingdom perspectivePlace allegiance to God above any political party. Your identity as a follower of Christ should define your actions, not your political affiliation. Your ultimate hope is in Jesus, not in any earthly political system.View political engagement as a way to serve God. The Bible encourages Christians to be active participants in their communities and to seek the welfare of their cities (Jeremiah 29:7). Your involvement can be an act of service to God and your neighbors.Understand the limits of politics. While government is instituted by God for the good of society, it is not the source of salvation or ultimate change. Transformative change begins with transformed hearts, not just new laws. Ground your views in scripture.Evaluate issues through a biblical lens. Study and prayerfully consider how biblical principles apply to specific political issues. When facing a conflict between a political party's position and your faith, ask yourself what would honor Christ.Seek guidance on complex issues. For issues that are not explicitly addressed in scripture, seek guidance through prayer, theological inquiry, and community reflection. Different Christians may arrive at different conclusions on these issues, and approaching them with humility is vital.Engage with humility and love.Practice civil discourse. Approach conversations with compassion and respect, listening to understand others' perspectives.Rather than striving to convince the other person why they are wrong, concentrate more on understanding how the formed their argument. Focus on integrity. From yourself as well as your elected leaders. Uphold Christian values such as honesty, compassion, and humility in all political interactions. Your actions should reflect the integrity of your faith, even in heated political climates. Avoid rationalizing one politicians actions just to preserve your political foundation. If a “your” politician does something against your integrity standards that are bound to the way of Christ, then be willing to call out just as you would if they were not your choice candidate.Engage with those who hold different views.Rather than trying to "win" an argument, engage with people who disagree with you by seeking to understand their hearts and praying for them. This creates a safer space for dialogue that may open the door to a deeper conversation. Unity is far more important than one person being right and another being wrong. Galatians 6:7, which says, "Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows".rocksolidfamilies.orgSupport the show#Rocksolidfamilies,#familytherapy,#marriagecounseling,#parenting,#faithbasedcounseling,#counseling,#Strongdads,#coaching,#lifecoach,#lifecoaching,#marriagecoaching,#marriageandfamily,#control,#security,#respect,#affection,#love,#purpose,#faith,#mastersofdisaster,#storms,#disasterrelief,#tornados,#hurricanes,#floods
A southside park is once again open to the public after a substantial renovation. Passengers at the Indianapolis International Airport will not be subject to a partisan video from the Department of Homeland Security regarding the shutdown. (This podcast was previously recorded and published on October 24, 2020) Jesus Ministries, Joan Boney ... In 2016, I was watching TV and happened upon the Democratic National Convention. As they showed the delegates, the cameras viewed in on a woman. Something seemed wrong. She was wearing a dress. She had on heels and women's jewelry. She wore a woman's make-up. Then I realized she was a man dressed as a woman! A slight beard had begun to appear on her face. I was very shocked! Somehow seeing this man dressed as a woman at a political convention showed me how very evil the world of politics is today. A Christian could not be a part of being involved in such worldly evil. The Bible says the following concerning homosexuals and lesbians. Romans 1:24-28 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; As a Christian, we cannot participate in anything that is contrary to Bible for the apostle John says to approve such and wish them well would be to make ourselves as a participant in their evil deeds. II John 8 Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward. 9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. 10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: 11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds. Politics in every way is filled with hatred and will cause the Christian to hate and to fight the other party. And we must abstain from those things which cause us to hate. To vote for either party is to approve worldly men who do evil things. Instead, the apostle Paul says to pray for those in authority. I Timothy 2:1-2 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. If we learn to hate the other political party, how can we pray for those in authority if they win the election? As Christians we are separated from the work of worldly men and women. We live in this world but are not of this world. Our goal is to live in peace, without spot and blameless in the sight of God, as we wait for Jesus who takes us out of this world and takes us to the new heaven and new earth wherein dwelleth righteousness. (II Peter 3:14 & Revelation 21:21-5) We cannot be a part of politics and vote for men of this world allowing ourselves to be a part of their evil. This is explained in this podcast. ***** I Thessalonians 5 1 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. 2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. 3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. 4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. 5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. 7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. 8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. 9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him. 11 Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do. *** * "Peace and safety " In the 1960's in Texas if a homosexual was caught, he was put in prison. It was against the law to be homosexual in Texas. Today homosexuals are safe in USA as never before. They have to be saying "peace & safety" as never before. Homosexuals and lesbians can even draw benefits from USA government as married couples. They are protected in their jobs in USA. People are forbidden in the work force today to speak that which the Bible says about homosexuals and lesbians. The leaders of the Catholic church have publicly accepted same sex marriages. Nothing can touch homosexuals and lesbians today ... except for God! Adultery and fornication, sex outside of marriage between men and women, is often approved and protected in USA. Adultery and fornication approved and accepted by society as "normal". We are rarely shocked by anything today for it appears over and over before our eyes. The churches invite all to come to church. The doctrines of Christ have been silenced and removed in the church groups so no one will be offended in their various sins which are approved at the churches. All is well! A time of "peace and safety" ... surely we draw nearer to the coming wrath of God, the great tribulation (Revelation 8-16), upon this earth and the removal of the godly from this earth. Jesus says: Matthew 24 21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. 29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: 30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And HE (Jesus) shall send HIS angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together HIS elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. II Peter 3 10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. 11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, 12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless we, according to HIS promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. 14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of HIM in peace, without spot, and blameless.
ActionSA has reportedly obtained the confidential agreement behind the ANC's R150 million debt settlement with Ezulweni Investments, which it says breaks the Political Party Funding Act. The deal, now public through ANC court papers, shows the ANC ordered R190 million worth of election materials to write off the R150 million debt - a move ActionSA calls an unlawful donation-in-kind exceeding the R15 million annual donor limit. ActionSA says the agreement contravenes the Act, contradicting statements by ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa and the IEC. Elvis Presslin spoke to ActionSA National Chairperson, Michael Beaumont
In this episode, Jeff points out the ridiculousness of the belief that President Trump has brought peace to the Middle East with the ceasefire agreement he got Israel and Hamas to sign. There is a mountain of evidence which makes clear that this ceasefire is simply a lull until the next war. In the meantime, the leftists/terrorists are making massive inroads into America and our failure to cut off the head of the terror snake will be our country's greatest failure in the not so distant future. In other news, Bruce Cutler has passed, at one point the most famous lawyer in the world. Bruce also was the lawyer who had a large part in getting Jeff to drop Pre-med in college and go to law school. In this podcast, Jeff recounts some very funny Bruce stories from years past. RIP Bruce.

How and why did the Chinese Communist Party rise to power in the 1940s at the expense of its Nationalist (KMT) rival? In his new book, Domination and Mobilization: The Rise and Fall of Political Parties in China's Republican Era (Cambridge University Press, 2025), Professor Xiaobo Lü (UC Berkeley) adopts a new model for thinking about this question. Using new qualitative and quantitative evidence, Lü shows how CCP success was built on dominant leadership and its interaction with a strategy of mass-centric mobilization to harness resources. By contrast, the contested factional leadership of the KMT and its elite-centric mobilization held back the party's power, particularly after it lost its geographical and fiscal base during China's war with Japan. In this interview, Professor Lü draws out the comparison between the two parties going back to the 1920s. He discusses how both parties adapted to the challenges of the Nanjing Decade and the 1937-45 wartime period – and how the legacies of party-building before 1949 still affect China today. Domination and Mobilization is strongly recommended for anyone interested in modern Chinese history, comparative revolutions, and party mobilization in authoritarian systems. Show Notes: Miruna studied art history at Harvard, focusing on Renaissance art. After taking a year off to travel and visit Romania, she decided to study Latin American Studies and Spanish and Portuguese at Yale. She found the graduate experience at Yale challenging, especially the sense of isolation that can come with graduate work when it is not socially or politically involved. Miruna began traveling to Mexico for her research on colonial Latin America, focusing on the intersection of history of science, literature, and ritual. Teaching History of Science Miruna moved to Mexico City, where she still resides. She works at a public university, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, in the Humanities Department where she works on narratives that have to do with the history of science. She also teaches courses on collecting and museum formation from a material culture perspective. She works with the national archeological collection in Mexico City, focusing on how collections are formed and the role of material culture in shaping history. Arriving in the U.S. As a Refugee Miruna shares more about her experience as a refugee and her journey to the US. Miruna was 13 when she left Romania with her parents, staying in a refugee camp near Vienna before moving to the US. Her parents applied for asylum in Australia, Canada, and the U.S., and the U.S. was the first to grant it. Miruna describes the cultural shock of arriving in Los Angeles in March with heavy winter coats, highlighting the differences between Central Europe and Southern California. The Cultural Importance of Understanding the Past Miruna discusses her teaching at a public university in Mexico, where she encourages students to question and engage with the past. She explains the hierarchical nature of Mexican society and how public universities provide a space for people from different backgrounds to meet. Miruna emphasizes the importance of understanding that the past is not fixed and that there are always opportunities to intervene and shape the present. In her courses on the history of archeology and collecting, she encourages students to develop their own relationships with the past. Archeological Collections and Community Ownership Miruna shares a story from the 19th century about the National Museum of Mexico and how archeology became a central part of the country's national heritage. She explains how archeological collections were moved from communities to the capital, often with resistance from local people. Miruna discusses a specific incident where urns from the Pacific coast were shattered during transportation, highlighting the different ways of caring for objects. While disciplinary narratives insist that museums care for objects, this episode shows how the opposite is true as well: objects and their meanings can be destroyed, physically and conceptually in their transfer to museum. She further discusses a more recent event, involving state violence and local resistance, when a 168-ton monolith was moved from a village outside Mexico City to the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, in 1964. Practices and Norms in Archeology The conversation turns to changes in archeological practices and norms over the years. Miruna notes that younger archeologists are more likely to seek permission from local communities and give credit to local guides and people working on excavations. She mentions the increasing difficulty of accessing certain areas in Mexico due to organized crime, which has reduced the number of archeological projects in some regions. Miruna emphasizes the importance of local museums and community collections in providing more inclusive and contextualized narratives. The Rise of Political Parties and the Zapatista Movement Miruna shares her experience of arriving in Mexico and the political changes she witnessed, including the rise of new political parties and the Zapatista movement. She describes the vibrant and dynamic nature of Mexican society, with ongoing efforts to find new ways of relating to the past and imagining the future. Miruna discusses the challenges of prejudice and hierarchies in Mexican society, despite progress in areas like gay marriage and feminist marches. Science Fiction as a Form of Resistance Miruna teaches science fiction written from the Global South, which she sees as a form of resistance against dominant narratives. She explains that this genre is relatively new in Latin America and is influenced by writers from the Global North like Octavia Butler and Ursula Le Guin. Miruna highlights the work of young writers like Gabriela Damian and Fernanda Trias, who explore social and cultural realities through science fiction. She discusses the importance of imagining open networks and connected worlds, rather than closed systems and technological fantasies. Archeological Points of Interest in Mexico Miruna offers a few recommendations for visitors interested in archeology in Mexico. She suggests visiting the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, which focuses on archeology and pre-Hispanic history. She also recommends a trip to Teotihuacan, highlighting the importance of visiting the mural paintings in the residential compounds. Miruna also recommends exploring the center of Mexico City, which is a palimpsest of different centuries and cultures, with the Templo Mayor, a pre-Hispanic structure from the 16th century, which is rising out of the ground due to shifts in soil and shifts in the water table. Harvard Reflections Miruna mentions Joseph Koerner, who taught Northern Renaissance art, and John Sherman, who taught Italian Renaissance art. She also recalls Oleg Grabar, who taught Islamic art and read poems such as Yeats' poem "Sailing to Byzantium" to inspire students to see art with different eyes. Miruna expresses regret for not taking classes with other influential professors like Stephen Jay Gould, which she would have loved to do now. The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 1: 3:05pm- According to new data from CNN's Harry Enten, despite Donald Trump's personally low approval ratings, Republicans still possess massive polling advantages on three key issues: the economy, immigration, and crime. Enten joked that the Democrats have become the New Orlean Saints of political parties—which bodes poorly for the party's hopes of taking the House of Representatives and/or Senate in 2026. 3:10pm- On Sunday, Republican Jack Ciattarelli and Democrat Mikie Sherrill held their first NJ Gubernatorial debate at Rider University. During one notable moment, Sherrill refused to pledge that she wouldn't raise taxes on New Jersey citizens. One new poll now has Ciattarelli leading by 1-point. 3:30pm- During Sunday's debate, Mikie Sherrill attempted to explain why she voted in favor of a bipartisan House resolution honoring the life and legacy of Charlie Kirk—but publicly denounced Kirk, lying about his past comments and baselessly claiming he wanted to” roll back the rights of women and Black people.” Sherrill was unable to answer when confronted with her inconsistencies and falsehoods. 3:40pm- On Sunday, a memorial service for Charlie Kirk was held in Glendale, Arizona—with 73,000 inside of State Farm Stadium and an estimated 200,000 people in total showing up to the event. In a powerful moment during the ceremony, Erika Kirk said she forgives her husband's accused killer. 3:50pm- During her Monday briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that President Donald Trump plans to sign an Executive Order designating Antifa as a terrorist organization.
Are you enjoying this? Are you not? Tell us what to do more of, and what you'd like to hear less of. The Reykjavík Grapevine's Iceland Roundup brings you the top news with a healthy dash of local views. In this episode, Grapevine publisher Jón Trausti Sigurðarson is joined by Heimildin journalist Aðalsteinn Kjartansson, and Grapevine friend and contributor Sindri Eldon to roundup the stories making headlines in recent weeks. On the docket this week are: ✨ Three AI robots have started “working” for the Icelandic container company. Their job is to sort garbage. ✨ Morgunblaðið has been going nuts about the profitability of drilling for oil on the ocean floor north east of Iceland, in an area generally referred to as “Drekasvæðið” or the Dragon Zone. What do you guys think is driving this discussion, and does it really make sense to drill for oil — underwater — at this point in history?✨ Four out of ten Icelanders say they have faith. Down from just over half of the population 10 years ago. 25% claim to be atheist, compared to about 15% in 2014. We see the trend of young men being more religious that women, with a third of men saying they have faith, while only a fifth of women report the same. ✨ A Reykjavík city council member of Viðreisn, suggested during a city council meeting last week, that the school summer recess would be shortened. The minister of education announced he'd be willing to discuss the proposition. ✨ On Friday, Estonia announced they were putting article 4 of the NATO charter into effect, initiating a consultation among the member states. This happened after Russian airplanes entered Estonian airspace.✨ Political parties meet over the weekend. Viðreisn, one of the three political parties of the majority coalition government was re-elected chairman of that party over the weekend. The Pirate party also met over, decided to take up the status of chair and co-chairman as a part of their party's hierarchy, but nobody really seemed interested in becoming chairman of the party.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------SHOW SUPPORTSupport the Grapevine's reporting by becoming a member of our High Five Club: https://steadyhq.com/en/rvkgrapevine/You can also support the Grapevine by shopping in our online store: https://shop.grapevine.is------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------WHO ARE WE?The Reykjavík Grapevine is an alternative monthly magazine, bringing you all the news and views on Ice------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------SHOW SUPPORTSupport the Grapevine's reporting by becoming a member of our High Five Club: https://steadyhq.com/en/rvkgrapevine/You can also support the Grapevine by shopping in our online store: https://shop.grapevine.is------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is a Reykjavík Grapevine podcast. The Reykjavík Grapevine is a free alternative magazine in English published 18 times per year, biweekly during the spring and summer, and monthly during the autumn and winter. In this podcast, Jeff talks about his trip to Italy and love of Italians — and notes the many similarities between Italians and Jews and one glaring difference.
