Welcome to Series 3, Episode 1 of Raw Talent where we're heading to Sweden for an educational chat with Linn Frisinger founder of Swedish Stockings. It all started after watching the 2010 documentary The Light Bulb Conspiracy which uncovers how planned obsolescence has shaped our lives and economy since the 1920's, when manufacturers deliberately started shortening the life of consumer products to increase demand. The film also profiles a new generation of consumers, designers and business people like Linn, who have started challenging planned obsolescence as an unsustainable economic driver. Linn explains that tights are made from petroleum which shocks most people. She saw many areas for improvement in design, quality, sustainability and packaging and has set about rewriting the rule book to create the first sustainable worldwide hosiery brand made from fully recycled nylon.

Meet Linn Frisinger, co-founder and CEO of Swedish Stockings who joins Laura in episode 26 of the ZWC to talk all about her sustainable company. Their high quality stockings are made from polyamide reclaimed from a big problem in our oceans - fish nets. Often called ghost nets, loose fishing nets tangle up and kill marine life and release microplastic into the ocean but Linn's company is reclaiming them and turning them into a durable and fashionable product that can be recycled after its use once customers opt into their return program when the stockings are all worn out. That means Swedish Stockings is sustainable and closed loop. Laura tested out a few pairs and they are stronger and longer lasting than typical stockings that only get one or two uses before being sent to landfill for the next century and made from the oil and gas industry. In episode 99, Kestrel welcomes Shobha Philips, the CEO and founder of Proclaim, to the show. An ethically-made and inclusively-designed bra collection, Proclaim is expanding the definition of nude by celebrating real women. "I think that lingerie should be marketed to the women that wear it - celebrating women's bodies of all types, all skin colors, letting women see themselves represented in these images, and feel like they are included and that they are beautiful." -Shobha Philips, CEO + Founder of Proclaim Throughout this episode, Shobha shares insight on the narrow definition of the color nude, and how she's redefining it with Proclaim. In a past blog post, Shobha wrote: “What started as an annoyance about the color nude turned into something much bigger. It turned into the opportunity to revolutionize an industry. Proclaim is a love letter to women who demand change rather than settling for the status quo.” Kestrel asks if there are other layers of the lingerie industry that are expired or need to be evolved. Shobha talks about how she believes in taking lingerie out of the bedroom in its marketing, and using visuals that are representative of real women. Shobha also explains how manufacturing locally, as well as accessible price points, are important to her and the future of Proclaim. The below thoughts, ideas + organizations were brought up in this chat: History of the word nude; referred to in LA Times article about the "nude revolution" "Why I Started Proclaim" blog post Swedish Stockings, another company challenging the traditional marketing of lingerie
In episode 70, Kestrel welcomes Linn Frisinger, cofounder of Swedish Stockings to the show. Swedish Stockings produces beautiful pantyhose from 90-98% recycled nylon yarn. Each year, two billion pairs of tights are produced, worn a few times, and then discarded. After being inspired by the documentary The Lightbulb Conspiracy, Linn and her cofounder Nadja Forsberg set out to find a better solution for the hosiery industry. In this chat, Kestrel asks Linn about the approach Swedish Stockings has to sustainability and zero waste in their supply chain, as well as their Recycling Club, which addresses the end of life of pantyhose. Linn also acknowledges the impact that nylon has on our oceans and microplastics issue; she shares how Swedish Stockings is developing a new yarn composed of upcycled plastic from the ocean. When it comes to being able to recycle elastane, Linn believes a solution is close, and hopes we will see one in the near future. Details on material composition: Nylon: a man-made polyamide, derived from petrochemicals (a thermoplastic); nylon is not biodegradable and contributes to microplastic pollution in the ocean. Elastane: a synthetic materials, scientifically described as a thermoplastic polyurethane elastomeric fiber; elastane cannot be easily separated from other materials, due to the way it shifts when heated. Currently, a solution has not been found to recycle fabrics with mixed compositions including spandex. Resources Linn mentioned: The Lightbulb Conspiracy: documentary on planned obsolescence & Other Stories: offers a beauty and textiles recycling program, a brand under the H&M Group FAIR TRADE FASHION SHOW TICKETS A fashion show for activists! This unique fundraiser uses fashion as a platform for education and awareness around the realities of modern slavery as well as a space to celebrate the power of everyday purchases to support freedom. Hosted by Bead and Reel, the event will benefit nonprofit Free The Slaves. Kestrel will be moderating the pre-show panel hosted by EcoSessions, which includes: Hoda Katebi of JooJoo Azad, Mike Farid of Nature USA and Jeff Denby of Renewal Workshop. The event will take place in Los Angeles on July 29th, 2017. Get your tickets here!
