This episode celebrates the determination of one woman to achieve her dreams through the choices presented to her at different times of her life to date. SHOBHA DAS with whom I was fortunate enough to catch up with in London last month, embraces an incredible life-changing challenge to build a house in the mountains above her Keralan homeland in India alongside her husband Chris Collinson - with whom I also recorded a podcast episode (ep. 027) over two years ago. Shobha is straightforward and unflinching in her recollection of choices she has made in life, reminding us that although some choices can be challenging ones to make, it is important to remain realistic yet not afraid of the decisions one takes. The biggest factor to longevity is in the diet. The saying that “You are what you eat.” is exactly true in the sense that what you take in your mouth can do a lot with your body and well-being. Evidence-based studies show that eating more whole plant-based foods can reverse chronic diseases, end the frustrating dieting cycle, lose weight and get off medications. Drs. Arjun and Shobha Rayapudi are both board-certified lifestyle medicine doctors and co-founders of Gift of Health, a nonprofit organization based in Newfoundland, Canada, dedicated to revolutionizing lives through lifestyle medicine. Through in-person and online workshops, they have helped hundreds of people prevent and reverse chronic diseases, end the frustrating dieting cycle, lose weight and get off medications. Their life-saving work was featured in the documentary "Plantify," broadcast on the national Canadian Broadcasting Corp (CBC) TV. Their mission is to bring the Gift of Health experience to a broader audience all over the world through online programs. Listen and be inspired in reaching your highest health! Highlights of the episode … - What prompted the doctors to shift from traditional medicine in favor of healthy eating? - Plant-based diet is the key to longevity. - Why don't the doctors recommend oil, not even olive oil? - What are the other factors that contribute to longevity aside from diet? - Information on the six-week online course offered by the Gift of Health that includes yoga and meditation - Why cholesterol matters as part of the overall healthy lifestyle? (...Can a plant-based diet lower high cholesterol even though it is part of a person's genetics?) - What makes people with food sensitivities disappear with a plant-based diet? - Do we really stay away from fruits because of sugar? - Advice from the couple doctors on self-care and self-love. There next job was to teach people to shift their perspectives and change their habits and as Dr Arjun said to his father when he needed heart surgery “instead of having your chest cut open why don’t you open your mouth and put different plant-based food in there?” With their non-profit organisation - Gift of Health they are showing thousands of people how to transition to Plant-based by not trying new foods but adjusting what you grew up with. “Have an open mind and an open mouth” Find Dr Arjun and Dr Shobha at: Website: www.giftofhealth.org Facebook: @giftofhealth.org Instagram: @giftofhealth_org You Tube: Gift of Health Discussed on the Podcast: Doc - Forks Over Knifes – www.forksoverknifes.com Dr Colin Campbell – www.nutritionstudies.org Dr Barnard – www.pcrm.org Dr Esselstyne – www.dresselstyn.com Dr McDougall – www.drmcdougall.com Elisabeth Kubler-Ross – Five Stages of Grief - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_stages_of_grief Rich Roll Podcast – www.richroll.com/all-episodes/ Holistic Holiday Cruise – www.holisticholidayatsea.com Sherzai Team – www.teamsherzai.com Doc – CBC Plantify - https://gem.cbc.ca/media/absolutely-canadian/season-19/episode-7/38e815a-01150100d0a Three ingredients you need to do this journey - 1. CHRIS COLLINSON jacked in his job as a civil servant in London and set off to India with his city-loving (internationally-travelled) partner Shobha Das to build a home in the Ghats mountains of Kerala, a State in southern India where Shobha was born but had never lived until now. Two years on, I had the unexpected opportunity to catch up with Chris on a visit to London for a podcast chat and walk along the river Thames on a gloomy November day recently. This is Chris' frank and inspiring interpretation of how life has changed for both him and Shobha living side by side in a habitat filled with elephants, snakes, leopards, wild dogs, butterflies and birds; and, respecting and marvelling at these creatures in equal measure. Tune in to our chat for a unique understanding of how dramatically life can change if you want it to, while putting your fears in to a perspective to suit the situation in which you find yourself. Meantime we've got the sounds of London in the background of our podcast chat just to give you that London city context too. :) *** To find out more about Chris and Shobha's home-building project in Kerala, southern India go to the YouTube link: Shobha and Chris' Wayanad Home Building Project *** TO KNOW MORE about your podcast host EMMA you can go to https://www.travellingthrough.co.uk/ THANKS to MARISKA Martina at https://www.mariskamartina.com/ for creating our wonderful podcast jingle! Mother-daughter duo Keryn & Shobha Kalyan are New Zealand born Gujarati's. Shobha's grandparents were one of the first Gujarati families to arrive in Aotearoa in the 1920s. Despite having very strong Kiwi roots, both Shobha & Keryn have grown up eating authentic Gujarati food and they learnt the art of Gujarati cooking the Indian way, by using all five senses. There were never any measurements or recipes, just an oral passing down of generations worth of food memories.Shobha has always dreamt of writing a cookbook and so the duo began the painstaking process of documenting the food they wanted to write about. In 2019, two years after they first began, “Pass It On” was released, a gift to Keryn and her two sisters and a preservation of their culture. The book is a bright and inviting collection of Gujarati recipes that have been handed down over generations. Shobha found translating the 103 recipes into simple instructions a hard task while Keryn, who had no photography experience, watched YouTube videos and painted backdrops to create the beautiful full-page images in the book.On the show I talk to them about secret recipes and why we need to uncover them. We talk about our joint Indian heritage and why it is so important for immigrant Kiwi's to have a way to access their past through their food. Specifically, we chat about:Importance of passing on family food memoriesWhat it takes to self-publish a cook book in New ZealandHow do you get your book out there?Fundamentals of Gujarati cooking Quotes from the episode:“With self-publishing you can have full creative control of your book. So, you can choose how you want it to look and how long it took you to write it. It helped us take control of how we wanted our book to be”“When you self-publishing you're essentially creating a small business. You're doing the marketing, the distribution, hiring freelancers to fill gaps in your skills”“It was mum's dream for so long and it's been awesome being able to make it happen.”“Writing a recipe is actually really hard, thinking about all the components that's needed and then making sure we are weaving our family stories through all the dishes featured there” Pass it On Cookbook: https://www.passitoncookbook.co.nz/

Synopsis: Author Shobha Rao discusses her debut novel, GIRLS BURN BRIGHTER, as well as the plight of human trafficking in India, how fiction has changed in a post-9/11 world, the perseverance of the human spirit, whether fiction writers have an obligation to expose the dark truths about humanity, and how she wrote the book in two months while living in complete isolation. Also, apologies for the abrupt ending – we had a lengthy conversation about my own writing I didn’t think anyone wanted to sit through and by the end of it, I completely forgot to thank Shobha and ask her the usual “where can people find you?” Time flies when you’re talking shop. In episode 99, Kestrel welcomes Shobha Philips, the CEO and founder of Proclaim, to the show. An ethically-made and inclusively-designed bra collection, Proclaim is expanding the definition of nude by celebrating real women. "I think that lingerie should be marketed to the women that wear it - celebrating women's bodies of all types, all skin colors, letting women see themselves represented in these images, and feel like they are included and that they are beautiful." -Shobha Philips, CEO + Founder of Proclaim Throughout this episode, Shobha shares insight on the narrow definition of the color nude, and how she's redefining it with Proclaim. In a past blog post, Shobha wrote: “What started as an annoyance about the color nude turned into something much bigger. It turned into the opportunity to revolutionize an industry. Proclaim is a love letter to women who demand change rather than settling for the status quo.” Kestrel asks if there are other layers of the lingerie industry that are expired or need to be evolved. Shobha talks about how she believes in taking lingerie out of the bedroom in its marketing, and using visuals that are representative of real women. Shobha also explains how manufacturing locally, as well as accessible price points, are important to her and the future of Proclaim. The below thoughts, ideas + organizations were brought up in this chat: History of the word nude; referred to in LA Times article about the "nude revolution" "Why I Started Proclaim" blog post Swedish Stockings, another company challenging the traditional marketing of lingerie

Fast-forward to present day, and they're married, living in London with kids and running the great family travel blog Just Go Places. "The more you pay, the less you get." No, she's not talking about the luxury family hotels she sometimes visits. Instead, she's describing her kids' school holiday schedule. With 17 weeks of vacation a year, Shobha and family get a lot of time to explore more of the world. That includes back in NYC as well as discovering the best things to do in London with kids. Out of the places she's been to, she mentions Cornwall's Luxury Family Hotels as some of the best family resorts in the UK. She also talks about luxury family hotels in the Caribbean and the USA. What makes them her favorite? Pools and waterslides make a difference, for sure. Cultural Travel and Accommodating the Interests of All Shobha and her husband want their kids to enjoy their family travel, but that doesn't mean only doing kids activities. Architecture, food, and culture travel all factor into their plans, as well. "We're not that child-centric," she says, "...I will not spend the rest of my life going to Disney." I couldn't have said it better myself. They visit lots of waterslides and roller coasters along the way, she explains, but the kids do lots of things that the parents enjoy, as well. For example, food tours have played and important role in their travels, and you know what? The kids enjoy them, too. Best Things to Do in London with Kids What exactly are the best things to do in London with kids? Shobha has a large list, and she tells us about some of them in the interview.
