What happens when you get everything you thought you wanted—and you still feel exhausted, invisible, or like it's not enough? In this episode, I sit down with executive coach, author, and chronic illness advocate Amina AlTai to talk about the ambition trap that so many women find themselves stuck in. We're talking burnout, people-pleasing, invisible labor, and the deeply ingrained systems that convince us our worth is tied to how much we produce. Amina shares insights from her new book The Ambition Trap: How to Stop Chasing and Start Living, including why redefining ambition is key to healing, how codependency and chronic overachievement are related, and what high-performing women often get wrong about success. If you've ever felt like you're doing everything and it's still not enough—this conversation is your wake-up call and your permission slip to do it differently. In this episode, you'll walk away learning: How the cultural definition of ambition keeps women stuck in burnout cycles Why burnout isn't a personal failure—it's a systemic setup The hidden cost of invisible labor, especially for women and mothers How your core wounds shape your ambition, your money mindset, and your relationships A practical framework to move from painful ambition to purposeful ambition Why even women who “have it all” still struggle to believe in their zone of genius—and how to reclaim it Follow Amina on Instagram @aminaaltai Stay up to date with everything Everyone's Talkin' Money on Instagram @everyonestalkinmoney Learn more about your ad choices. I'm so excited for you to hear this conversation with Amina AlTai. She's enthusiastic, warm, and wicked smart, and her work around ambition is deeply important. Amina is a holistic career coach and chronic illness advocate who helps leaders lead from their brilliance and truth. Her new book, The Ambition Trap, reframes what ambition means, and how it can be a tool for healing and wholeness instead of burnout and over-functioning. We discuss the two types of ambition: the kind rooted in purpose and values, and the kind that comes from pain, people-pleasing, and old wounds. Plus, Amina shares her own story about autoimmune diagnoses and near organ failure; and how they shaped the framework she now teaches. As Amina says, “Ambition is the desire to grow,”and anything is possible with your ambition when it's coming from that place of purpose and wholeness. You'll hear us talk about: Ambition rooted in purpose vs. ambition driven by family or societal expectations (aka purposeful ambition vs. painful ambition) (6:13) Why overworking is often a systemic and economic issue, plus signs you're caught in the cycle and how to break free (10:25) What it means to live above the resentment line and how it applies to your professional life (12:56) The three E's of identifying your zone of genius: excellence, energy, and ease and how they help align your career with your true self (15:25) How to shift your perspective around the word ambition, especially if it's always felt a little uncomfortable (21:39) Practical strategies to prevent burnout while still pursuing your goals (24:08) The internalized beliefs that equate your worth with your work and how core belief and shadow work can help flip the script (32:53) Resources: Rythmia Retreat Andrea on Instagram @heyandreaowenMy Ketamine Therapy Journey secret podcast seriesAmina's websiteAmina's book, The Ambition Trap: How to Stop Chasing and Start Living Amina on Instagram @aminaaltaiThe Big Leap, Gay Hendricks Stop Telling Women They Have Imposter Syndrome, Ruchika Tulshyan and Jodi-Ann Burey, Harvard Business Review Book recommendations:I love a good personal development book, and you do too, right? I am thrilled to have Amina AlTai here with me today to talk about her new book The Ambition Trap: How to Stop Chasing and Start Living, which is out May 13. Here's what I love about this book, among many things, honestly—it is billed as “the anti-hustle guide to getting what you really want,” and it delivers. If you are experiencing or have experienced burnout, overwork, and stress when it comes to your ambition, then this book is for you. This book helps us escape the ambition trap—and don't worry, Amina tells us in this episode what that is—and step instead into joy-filled work. This is such a great book and a great conversation! She has taught me that we can be ambitious and not sacrifice ourselves in the process. Hallelujah! It turns out that maybe we're not looking for money or status but really acceptance and belonging. I know I've outsourced my self-worth externally for a great many years, and spoiler alert—that doesn't work. If you, like me, are ready to reconcile your ambition, let's heal our core wounds and get to the other side together, escaping the ambition trap once and for all. Today Amina and I talk about why ambition is complicated, especially for historically excluded people; how ambition is not up and to the right and isn't a linear journey; why being an ambitious woman is somehow still not acceptable, even in 2025; the difference between painful ambition and purposeful ambition; how hustle culture became so pervasive, anyway; what the resentment line is—trust me, you'll want to know all about that; and what healthy ambition looks like and a microstep we can take even as soon as today to get there. Amina is an executive coach, leadership trainer, and chronic illness advocate that has been featured everywhere from The New York Times to NBC, CBS, Forbes, and more. She's an expert-in-residence at Entrepreneur Magazine and was named one of Success Magazine's Women of Influence, and she's partnered with companies like Google, Snap, Roku, and Outdoor Voices. I not only enjoyed this conversation, but I deeply appreciated it. The Ambition Trap: How to Stop Chasing and Start Living by Amina AlTai

Given the time we'll spend at work, making it as fulfilling as possible makes sense. Codependency is not just happening at home. It's happening in our professional lives, our work environments and relationships too. But I'm not so sure we're hearing much about that, so we're going to dive into the topic of codependency at work on this episode of This Is Woman's Work. Amina AlTai is a holistic business and career coach, proud immigrant and chronic illness advocate and our guest on today's episode. In addition to her one-on-one work with forward thinking and notable leaders, executives and founders, Amina was also a founding coach for Chief (the women's leadership organization) and led the coaching division for Inspire Justice (which trains entertainment organizations and celebrities). Here are a few things to keep in mind so we don't create codependency in our work lives: Our strengths taken too far can easily become our greatest weakness There is a difference between empowering people and enabling them Being needed is not the same as being valued Connect with Amina: Website: https://aminaaltai.com/ IG: https://www.instagram.com/aminaaltai FB: https://www.facebook.com/aminaaltai Change Your Life Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/amina-change-your-life/id1669584137 Like what you heard? All change requires some level of courage, confidence, trust, and faith. But not all of us naturally feel confident. Some of that, particularly for historically excluded folks like women, POC, the LGBTQIA+ community, those with disabilities, those of varied sizes, and of varied immigration status, our confidence is often impacted by systemic oppression. If we don't see people like us in spaces we want to be in we usually question ourselves, our abilities, and our belonging. So how do we build confidence in an unjust world? I've got 10 hot tips for you! In this episode, you will be able to: Debunk the myth of imposter syndrome. Hint: it's a major distraction. Learn a step by step approach to building confidence over time. Strengthen your inner voice. Practice kindness and self-compassion, making confidence-building more attainable. If 82% of people feel it, it's impossible to believe that it's about individual inadequacy. I think it has much more to do with structural inequality. - Amina AlTai We are enough. Are you a career changer who feels lost in the process of pivoting your career? Have you heard these common myths that are holding you back? Myth #1: You need to start from scratch. Myth #2: You can't switch industries. Myth #3: You have to take a pay cut. Let's debunk those right now. In this episode of the Amina Change Your Life podcast, I explore the principles of a powerful career pivot. I stress the importance of living directionally (a la Megan Hellerer), seeking clarity and information at each step of the journey. I highlight the significance of making small changes every day to avoid overwhelm and impulsivity. I encourage listeners to examine their fears and not let it hold them back from taking action. By taking things step by step and seeking clarity and information along the way, we can overcome barriers and move in the direction of personal and professional fulfillment. In this episode, you will be able to: Grasp the value of defining unearthing your purpose and creating a criteria for your next-level dream. Make peace with non-linear and unconventional career journeys and learn to adapt to evolving circumstances. Adopt the practice of making minor daily tweaks to witness exponential growth. Face and dismantle the fears and cognitive distortions stifling your potential and growth. The key moments in this episode are: 00:00:05 - Choosing Your Career Consciously 00:03:29 - You Are Right on Time 00:06:33 - Taking One Aligned Action at a Time 00:08:52 - Don't Get Stuck in the Planning Phase 00:11:37 - Living Directionally 00:11:59 - Atomic Habits 00:12:44 - Gain Clarity 00:13:48 - Examining Fears 00:14:36 - Cognitive Distortions Quotes “We are always right on time for our lives.” - Amina AlTai “Before you leap into something entirely new, I want you to go inward and start to follow the breadcrumbs of your purpose.” - Amina AlTai “Most of us have not chosen our careers consciously. We choose them based on the imprints of families, of cultures, subcultures, media, or sometimes even reactions.” -Amina AlTai “I just want to underscore that you are absolutely not a failure. You have not gone down the wrong path. You are not off track. I don't believe that we're ever off track. We're simply clarifying our next move.” -Amina AlTai “I find this whole judgment about where individuals should be at a certain stage of their life ridiculous. Only the soul knows the path it's here to walk, what it has to overcome, which achievements to measure its progress by. Nobody knows why we're here except you. You're the only one that can find that. People judge as though they have it all figured out, but their judgments are often just a smokescreen for their own confusion. Are we late bloomers or on time growers? This is a personal decision. The important thing is that we keep on walking towards a place that feels like home.” - Jeff Brown The resources mentioned in this episode are: Listen to Episode 3: Unearthing Your Purpose and download the purpose workbook. Make a list of three to five things that didn't work in your last role and what contributed to the breakdown from a personal, managerial, and organizational perspective.
