The European Recycling Platform (ERP), Ireland's only pan-European compliance scheme for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and Waste Batteries continues their Sustainability Partnership with St. Patrick's Festival, coinciding with their 20th anniversary in Ireland. ERP, in collaboration with artist group FORJA Works, has created a WEEE-inspired installation entitled 'EcoTrashShip' that will take festivalgoers on a mission to reduce electrical waste on Earth while reaching for the stars! With research showing that 1 in 3 people are hoarding unused or broken electrical items in their homes, ERP is encouraging everyone to Go Green and Boldy Recycle their electrical waste. EcoTrashShip The ERP 'EcoTrashShip' is a fun, space-themed installation that stands over 16 feet tall, is fully solar powered, and is composed of more than 100 electrical items, such as TVs, laptops, phones, and cables, which are some of the most frequently recycled electrical items in Ireland. Research conducted by Coyne Research in January 2025 revealed that 1 in 5 (20%) people in Ireland recycled old TVs in the past 12 months, 1 in 6 (17%) recycled old mobile phones, and 1 in 8 (13%) recycled old laptops. Since the WEEE Directive was launched in Ireland in 2005, ERP has collected almost 220,000 tonnes of WEEE, and 4,500 tonnes of batteries in Ireland - that's 480 times the weight of the International Space Station! This year's St. Patrick's Festival theme, Adventures (Eachtraí), celebrates the adventurous spirit that defines Irish culture. The ERP 'EcoTrashShip' aligns with this spirit by blending art and activism, aiming to inspire change and highlights ERP's commitment to a circular future where nothing goes to waste. James Burgess, Country General Manager of ERP Ireland said: "What if your old kettle, laptop, or hairdryer became part of a spaceship? When you recycle your electrical waste, these products are broken down, and the materials can be reused. Recycling all that Christmas waste Christmas is one of the biggest occasions across the globe for waste generation, with Ireland expected to produce 100,000 tonnes of packaging waste this year. A recent survey by repak.ie of 1,000 people concluded that 92% of respondents said that would make a conscious effort to recycle packaging correctly over the festive period. Natural Christmas trees can be recycled at nine Tipperary County Council sites across the county, and at bring centres that handle green waste, but fake trees must go in general waste if they can no longer be re-rused. Any broken fairy lights and used batteries can be recycled for free as WEEE recycling and should never go into general waste bins. Unfortunately most Christmas decorations and shiny or glittery cards and wrapping paper are not recyclable as they are mixed materials. If you told 19-year-old Larry Liu that his hobby re-selling used electronics “for fun” would someday help him build a multi-billion-dollar company, he probably would have laughed. He was an electrical engineering student in Shanghai at the time. His goals were to land a corporate job and go to grad school in the U.S. He did both, starting with a job at Intel. But his passion for e-commerce stayed with him through his MBA and other corporate jobs. The WEEE forum estimates that of the 16 billion mobile phones in the world about 5.3bn will no longer be in use this year. Despite being packed with precious metals like gold, silver and palladium and other recyclable parts most will not be disposed of properly. This mountain of e-waste (that if piled on top of each other would reach 120 times higher than the International Space Station) is only part of e-waste problem with other small consumer electronics e.g. remotes, headphones, clocks, irons etc., being hoarded in even greater numbers than mobiles. Magdalena Charytanowicz from the WEEE forum is on the show and explains the magnitude of the problem and how it needs to be tackled. 100 years of the BBC As the BBC starts its 100th anniversary celebrations, we have a report from BBC Northampton's Martin Heath, who is spending the day at the site of the Daventry transmitting station at Borough Hill. Martin tells us about the history of the station (it was initially was used for long wave, and short wave broadcasting and closed in 1992) and we also speak to one of the engineers who worked there about the technology used. More than 5000 scientists from across the world will now be able to observe stars being born, comets, black holes and light from cosmic objects that has been travelling to Earth for more than 13 billion years.
