9 Ways You Can Gain An Advantage

In today's episode, we are going to discuss 9 different ways that you can gain an advantage.   1. Raw Talent & Intelligence  Either you are born with this... or you're not.    2. Hard Work Nothing can replace this advantage. The person who works how to hustle can be successful even if they have limited talent. Will you outwork everyone else in the room?   3. Differentiation The ability to see the world differently and DO something differently than others.    4. Processes & Disciplines These habits can set you apart when you stick with them over the long term. The power of compounded consistency will make ALL the difference.    5. Talent Collector Are you drawing a HIGH level team around you? Will the people you have gathered raise the standard to a whole new level? Surround yourself with amazing people!   6. Patience A lack of patience changes outcomes... operating in a hurried manner often forces BAD decisions. We need to be people who take a moment so we can RESPOND rather than simply REACTING to something poorly.   7. The Ability to Endure PAIN There is no growth without failure. You'll never be an expert at something the 1st time you do it. Are you willing to look like a fool to improve at something? How much RISK are you willing to take?   8. Temperament Are you able to keep a cool head when everyone else is walking in fear?   9. Luck Sometimes you just have to be in the right place at the right time.    If you prefer to watch this via YouTube, check it out here: https://youtu.be/MIxD-M2tt3Q

Athletes who played at the collegiate level or higher tend to have a certain competitiveness and coachability that make them star salespeople. JR talks about honing their raw talent and really nailing the basics of prospecting, qualification, and creating rapport to mold truly successful sales reps.HIGHLIGHT QUOTESSales athletes see the positive impact of feedback - JR: "When they got constructive criticism or feedback, they didn't take it personally because they were like, okay, like this is something that I can get better at, and if I listen to this person who's an expert and I enact their feedback, then I'm going to see an outcome where it's positive and I'm not gonna take it personally like they're attacking me."Qualification means getting to no faster than you get to yes - JR: "You need to be able to prospect forever. It's the most important skill you can have as a salesperson. So we try to hammer that home with these folks. And then the other pieces we work on are building rapport and doing discovery, like qualification.""And when I say discovery, I'm really talking about qualification. "I see my job as being the guardian of COOK's values and purpose," says the company's Co-CEO, Rosie Brown. "To make sure that everybody in COOK is living the values that were set out when he started the business." It is clear from listening to Rosie that the way COOK does business is just as important to her as making a profit, if not more so. In this episode of the Career Conversations podcast series, she tells us how she ended up co-running the hugely popular frozen meals company. She tells host Elisa Roche she started life wanting to be a nurse, then moved into the political world, before deciding to join her brother Ed at COOK. Ed founded the business and Rosie joined three years later. They also work with another of their brothers. "We've always got on," she says. "I think it helps that Ed and I share values and have been completely united in our vision for COOK, not just in what we want to achieve but how we want to get there." Listen to the full episode to find out why Rosie believes business can be a force for good in the world, her secret to maintaining a company's values when you have 1,600 staff members, and how the cost of living crisis is affecting the business. Find out more about the up-coming Food Matters Live careers event series Rosie Brown, Co-CEO, COOK Growing up, Rosie Brown dreamed of a career in nursing, but a year into training she realised it wasn't for her. Then she worked in the City. Another mistake.  Aged 25, she joined her brother Ed's new frozen meals business – COOK. Together, the siblings built it into a £100m company, with nearly 90 stores, hundreds of concessions, and a thriving e-commerce arm – making it one of the largest independently owned food businesses in the UK. Rosie was the company's first Head of People – and people remain at the core of her work today. She believes in the power of business to make a positive impact and, for her, COOK is about building community one plate, one person at a time.  “The biggest impact a company can have is its people,” says Rosie. “Employment can change people's lives. Given the right support, everyone can achieve extraordinary things.” Rosie is proud to chair the employment board at HMP Wandsworth – and ex-offenders, former addicts and the homeless made up 10 per cent of COOK's new recruits last year, as part of its pioneering RAW Talent programme. Founded in 1997, COOK nourishes the nation through 90 retail stores (but notably not in the big four supermarkets), 800 concessions, and a rapidly expanding delivery business. Their kitchens use the same techniques you would at home, so everything looks and (more importantly) tastes – homemade. They just use bigger pans.  Resolutely independent, today COOK has 1,700 employees and turned over £94.4m in 2021/22 – without selling a single meal through one of the Big Four supermarkets. There are three key strands to COOK: food that tastes like it's been made at home, business independence, and creating community.

The Christian Indie Artists & Songwriters Podcast

On this episode of the CIAS Podcast Ross King and I talk about the 4th ingredient in his formula for music industry success- raw talent. Ross says that we are not able to do anything about the amount of raw talent we are given, however we can lean on the other ingredients (work ethic, suck meter, and how are you in a room) to cultivate the raw talent we have. The bad news is that we can't do anything to gain more “raw talent” but the great news is that raw talent is not enough on its own to make a real impact in music.  This means, within reason, no matter the amount of talent you start with, you can continue to work and develop yourself to do great things in music. Ross's merchandise: https://rosskingmusicstore.bigcartel.com/Join our CIAS Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/christianindieartistsandsongwriters

On Episode 62 of The Chills at Will Podcast, Pete has the pleasure to speak with Donté Clark. Donté and Pete discuss Donte's growing up in North Richmond, CA, his childhood memories-both beautiful and traumatic, his work in the movie Romeo is Bleeding, his poetry, his teaching, and his poetry collection, Close Caskets.   Donté Clark is a poet, actor, and community activist from unincorporated North Richmond, California who works with youth organizations throughout the Richmond area. As a student in high school, Clark was recruited by his English teacher Molly Raynor who was founding a youth arts program, RAW Talent. Clark became the artistic lead of the program's first play, Té's Harmony, which examined local issues through the structure of Romeo and Juliet. The performance was introduced by poet Luis J. Rodriguez. The 2015 documentary Romeo Is Bleeding follows Clark in the process of writing and performing Té's Harmony. In July 2014, Donté Clark and two others, Lincoln Bergman and Brenda Quintanilla, were made poets laureate of Richmond for a two year period. They were preceded as poet laureate by Dwayne Parish, and succeeded by Daniel Ari, Ciera-Jevai Gordon and Rob Lipton. Clark's mentoring of the community's youth has led to some becoming mentors and teachers themselves, including poet and actor DeAndre Evans who appeared with Clark and Will Hartfield reciting poetry for a PBS story about housing in Richmond. Clark has a supporting role in the 2016 film Kicks, the 2018 film Code Switch, and stars in the web series The North Pole.        Show Notes and Links to Donté Clark's Work   Buy Donté 's Close Caskets Here   Donté Clark's Wikipedia   The Creative Independent Interview with Donté by Ambrose Mary Gallagher   Close Caskets Interview with Richmond Pulse   Edutopia Article about Romeo is Bleeding   Donté Clark Discusses Romeo is Bleeding   Romeo is Bleeding Trailer   Watch Romeo is Bleeding through YouTube   Donté performs his work, “Let Me Breathe” in 2014   Donté in Season 1, Episode 1 of Series The North Pole Talking Points/Authors/Books Mentioned and Allusions Referenced During the Episode:   At about 2:50, Donté talks about Richmond, CA, and his background there, and how he sees it as a “small city” and its interconnectedness and history of families   At about 5:30, Donté talks about one of his poems “600 Banks Drive” and its connection to the innocent days of his childhood   At about 10:40, Donté talks about shifts in his life, where innocence was lessened through his middle school days and looking back at possible traumas, and how he felt forced to make adult/serious decisions at a young ages   At about 14:35, Donté talks about the idea of “growing up too fast” and “growing up backwards”   At about 17:30, Donté talks about the dynamics between certain parts of Richmond   At about 23:40, Donté talks about his poem “Bus Stop” and how “exhausting” life can often be when you have to be vigilant so much of the time and how this hypervigilance has impacted Donté in his later life   At about 28:20, Donté talks about how he got into the Renaissance Man life-being an actor, poet, performer, etc., when he had at one time, according to Romeo is Bleeding, wanted to “be the best dope dealer.”   At about 35:20, Pete asks Donté about chill-inducing writers, and Donté references several, including Amir Sulaiman, Tongo Eisen-Martin, Jesmyn Ward, Chinaka Hodge, Lauren Whitehead, and Molly Raynor    At about 39:45, Donté talks about Molly Raynor and how she gained his respect when he was 17 and how the two began working together    At about 47:50, Donté describes reactions from him and others when he did his first poetry performances and his thoughts on the subject matter and how when he's teaching, checking in with students comes first   At about 54:25, Pete and Donté discuss some powerful lines from the documentary Romeo is Bleeding and Donte and “being in tune” with the words he reads and with the audience   At about 57:20, Donté discusses the Romeo and Juliet links to Romeo is Bleeding and the incredible feelings after presenting the work to an audience; he also talks about early casting    At about 1:06:40, Donté talks about Luis Rodriguez's help and support for Romeo is Bleeding and Donté's work as Poet Laureate of Richmond   At about 1:14:25, Donté talks about some of his acting work, including The North Pole YouTube series   At about 1:16:55, Donté explains the meanings and background of the title of his poetry collection, Close Caskets, as well as how Karla Brundage and Pacific Raven Press became the publishers   At about 1:20:00, Pete reads an excerpt of the poetry collection's foreword from Dr. Khalid White   At about 1:24:00, Pete and Donté discuss themes from the poetry collection, including loss, poverty, hunger, as seen in “33 Reasons,” “Gimme,” “Today, I…”   At about 1:26:25. I want them to see my art as something they were both cherish and want to give to another as a gift. Since I began this journey I have seen ups and down learning lessons and it's crazy moments but overall I have never once look back and felt that I should quit what I'm doing because it is my passion, joy, and everything that brings me happiness outside of my loving family. Truly I am so appreciative for the talent I have and how my skills have grown thanks to God, it has put me on the path that shows me what I am capable of and what is yet to come. I am continuing my journey by going on YouTube and Instagram and showing to the world how I develop how I do my craft and how pieces are created. The Part-Time CEO

“Believe in yourself. Believe that you deserve to chase your dreams and that you deserve to give yourself the time to live without regret.” Cherissa Kell (1:00:13 - 1:00:24) The recipe for your success.  Most people wouldn't even dream of going to the Olympics with no collegiate or professional background in athletics. But Cherissa Kell isn't like most people. After hearing that females physically peak in their 30's, Cherissa decided at the age of 24 that she would train hard to prove that theory true. She hopped on the marathon bandwagon, started surfing, and eventually fell in love with triathlons. Now at the age of 34 and living in Japan, she is well on her way to competing as a female triathlete for USA in the 2024 Paris Olympics. But the journey has proved far from easy or kind. Two emergency C-sections just 12 months apart completely ripped apart Cherissa's midline. Everything felt hopeless. The family had recently moved to the middle of nowhere in Wisconsin with the nearest gym 45 minutes away. It wasn't possible for Cherissa to repair her body and fulfill her Olympic dream with two boys and no support system. Or was it? You may feel it is impossible to reach your full potential as Cherissa did. But the truth is, it isn't. There is a recipe for your success. “It's not a matter of whether or not you will have to sacrifice. The question is what are you willing to sacrifice?”  - Janelle Lara (53:55 - 54:07) With the encouragement and support of her husband, Cherissa began researching her options. A life of regret was not what she wanted. Through her research of the professional triathlete and US Olympian, Gwen Jorgensen, Cherissa discovered a reputable coach. An email and phone conversation later, Cherissa was put in touch with her now coach who oversees all elite US female triathletes.  I'm sure you can imagine the investment of time, energy, and money for an Olympic dream. But just to put things into perspective, Cherissa's bike alone was $7,000. That's a tremendous sacrifice for a family of four to make! But it's not a matter of whether you will have to sacrifice for your dream. It's a question of what are you willing to sacrifice?  There are actually many similarities between training for the Olympics and building your own startup. Both require four essential ingredients for success. Raw Talent. Everyone is created with a specific purpose in mind. Cherissa is 130lbs at 5'9 with long legs, a great wingspan, “paddle” hands, and no major health issues or irregular menstrual cycles in the past. Her body is structurally sound to handle the rigor and trauma of training for, and competing in the Olympics. While this might not be the case for you, you are gifted in your own way for something truly amazing! Perhaps you have an inclination? Identify your raw talent to head in the right direction! A Plan. You know you have what it takes. Now you need a plan. Cherissa knew she needed a lot of training to get her body up to peak performance after two emergency C-sections. So she invested in a top coach and got to work! What is holding you back from achieving your dream? What do you need to move forward? Be honest with yourself! Create a plan of personal growth to develop positive habits and master the skills necessary to reach success. A Team. The journey to success is not meant to be lonely. In fact, it's near impossible to build a business on your own. You need a team! There were some days, Cherissa admitted, where she just didn't want to get out of bed, train, or leave her sons. But her husband reminded her of her Olympic dream and cheered her on! A parent, spouse, coach or close loved one will always see the best in you even on your most challenging day. Don't hesitate to reach out and ask for their help. Surround yourself with the right teammates that will provide good sound counsel and encouragement on the journey ahead. Self-Confidence. Unfortunately, you can't purchase or receive this last ingredient from anyone or anywhere. It's something that you will have to dig deep to unearth. Whenever Cherissa found herself on the verge of self-doubt, she would immediately think, “Why not me?” So, why not YOU? If you don't know already, then let me be the first to tell you. You are one strong woman capable and deserving of something truly amazing! You just got to have a little faith in yourself. “Seeking out council is essential... Surround yourself with good council. Take their advice. Ask questions. Don't try to build your business alone.”  - Cherissa Kell (33:09 - 33:43) After mixing these four essential ingredients, it may very well be that you don't succeed. You will probably fail many many times in the process. But guess what? That's okay. Behind most success stories are many stories of failure. If you continue to utilize a plan to develop your raw talent with the support of a team and up your self-confidence, then one of your batches is bound to turn out exactly the way you want. What's important is to not give up and stay positive.  I know it's scary to take the initial step. What if it doesn't work?  But what if it does?  You'll never know until you try! Allow yourself the chance to chase your dreams and reach your full potential! You deserve it. How to get involved Follow @theparttimeceopodcast on Instagram for special, podcast related updates!
