#365 In this episode of the Let It In podcast, Guy welcomed back Thomas Campbell for an insightful conversation on exploring other realities, consciousness, and the nature of life and death. Thomas shared his experiences of traversing different virtual realities, interacting with beings beyond Earth, and understanding the essence of consciousness. They discussed how consciousness grows through multiple lifetimes, the roles one can undertake in different realities, and how intent can alter future probabilities. Tom also touched on overcoming the fear of death and the importance of making low-entropy, love-based choices. He offered practical advice for those seeking to explore these concepts through his online resources and workshops. This episode delved deep into profound themes, resonating with both new listeners and longtime followers of Tom's work. About Thomas: Thomas W. Campbell is the author of Tom's Park and the My Big TOE trilogy that “unifies science and philosophy, physics and metaphysics, mind and matter, purpose and meaning, the normal and the paranormal”. The attributes assigned by some theologians to their concept of God are very similar to the attributes of the LCS, the larger consciousness system as scientifically derived by Tom.  Tom has said for over a decade that the next big cultural and scientific paradigm shift is virtual reality. Virtual reality is now a more widely accepted concept in science and technology. Tom combines a fundamental understanding of consciousness and virtual reality to back up this prediction with a logically and scientifically derived My Big TOE theory.  This theory explains most of the remaining big questions in both physics and metaphysics”. Tom's model of Consciousness derives Quantum Mechanics and Relativity, eliminates quantum weirdness, and builds a scientific foundation under much of what was previously deemed “paranormal”.  This comprehensive, logical, and scientific explanation of both objective and subjective reality perfectly defines a Big TOE. A former NASA physicist, Tom worked as a large complex systems analyst by day and collected evidential information in the larger consciousness system by night.  Tom delivers information through his unique abilities and experience that you will not find anywhere else. How are recent DESI experimental results challenging the traditional view of dark energy as a fixed cosmological constant? Are foundational assumptions in Einstein's general relativity limiting progress in theoretical physics? And how do tensions in cosmological measurements, like the Hubble constant discrepancy, reflect deeper issues in physics? In this episode, we'll explore these fundamental questions with none other than Eric Weinstein! Eric is one of the most revered thinkers of our generation. Though not an academic physicist, he proposed a unified theory of physics in 2013, which is supposed to have the potential to explain phenomena that string theory cannot. In a lecture held live at UCSD in April 2025 at the prestigious Astrophysics and Cosmology Seminar, Eric presented an update to his groundbreaking theory. Today, we'll discuss his fascinating theory, the future of physics and academia, and much more.  Eric is an investor, financial executive, and host of The Portal. He and his brother, Bret Weinstein, coined the term Intellectual Dark Web to refer to an informal group of pundits. Eric is a vocal critic of modern academic hierarchies and advocates for advances in scientific theory over an emphasis on experimental results. He proposed a new unified theory of physics in 2013 and has been an active member of the physics community since then.  — Please join my mailing list here

This is a conversation with Stephen Wolfram about his proposed theory of everything. Stephen is a British-American computer scientist, mathematician, physicist, and CEO of Wolfram Research. He also created Mathematica, and Wolfram|Alpha & Wolfram Language, and is the Author of 'A New Kind of Science' as well as a number of other books. Stephen's attempt to derive all of the laws of nature (including gravitation, statistical mechanics, and general relativity) rests on two key ideas:  1. The idea of computational irreducibility. In physics we usually deal with systems for which we are able to predict the state of the system at a later time as long as the initial conditions are known. For example, the trajectory of a bullet can be calculated at any point along its path. There are, however, complicated systems like cellular automata where there isn't a closed formula that lets you calculate the state of the system at some arbitrary later point. Instead you are forced to compute the development of the system one step at a time if you want to know how it evolves. Such systems are 'computationally irreducible'. 2. The idea of computational boundedness. This is the idea that we have finite computing power in our brains. There are many complex systems that scale so fast that our bounded computing power isn't enough follow every element of the system (e.g. we can't visualize the motion of the billions of cells in our own bodies, and so instead we develop an aggregated model of ourselves). Starting with these two ideas, Stephen asks what a world with computational irreducibility would look like to a computationally bounded creature living in that world. He then builds a computational model based on hypergraphs (which you can think of as a kind of cellular automata), and from there attempts to re-derive all the laws of nature. This is an extraordinarily ambitious project, that lies somewhat outside of mainstream approaches to physics. The claim is, however, that significant progress has been made, and that this approach really is able to derive interesting aspects of the physical world. This conversation explores the key ideas behind the program. ►Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/T0s_H9c2O28 ► For more information about Stephen's work see: www.stephenwolfram.com www.wolframphysics.org ►Thumbnail source images can be found here: https://company.wolfram.com/press-center/stephen-wolfram/ https://www.wolframphysics.org/visual-gallery/  ►Follow Stephen on X: @stephen_wolfram These conversations are supported by the Andrea von Braun foundation (http://www.avbstiftung.de/), as an exploration of the rich, exciting, connected, scientifically literate, and (most importantly) sustainable future of humanity. Einstein completed his theory of general relativity in 1915 when he was 37 years old. What did he do for the remaining 40 years of his life? He continued developing his masterwork of course! Feeling that his theory was incomplete, Einstein pursued a unified field theory. Though he ultimately failed, the ideas he came up with were quite interesting. I have read a lot of old Einstein papers in the past weeks and here is my summary of what I believe he tried to do. This video comes with a quiz which you can take here.

I've got a real soft spot for heretics and people who carve their own path outside of the institutions and societal norms and things that everyone is so pressured into because it creates this echo chamber and there's these cookie cutter outcomes, it's not conducive to getting to new ideas, it's not good for figuring out new things and to discover how the world works and invent new things. It's always a real privilege to spend time with a true heretic and today we're hanging out with Garret Lisi. He has his own unified theory of particle physics, combining that with Einstein's theory of gravitation Garrett's been slagged by the scientific community for this, even though nobody's managed to do a really good job of proving he's wrong and. I think it's a really great story. You don't need to know anything about these topics to be interested in this conversation. It's a lot less about the science, you can learn about that independently if you want. What we're really doing is discussing his experience of what it's like trying to bring a new idea from outside of the ivory tower of academia, especially in a field that has been trying really hard for 40, 50 years now with very little to show for it, with string theory and these other things that soaked up a lot of the resources and attention but didn't really get us where we thought we wanted to go. No disrespect to the people who tried, but we need new ideas and we need to work on those too. This is a case where the credentialism where the established folks in the scientific community exhibited pretty poor behavior and really tried to shut down an idea in the wrong way, instead of doing it the right way, which is to just come up with one that is better. Garrett is a super fascinating guy! If you are interested in figuring out how to live a life of surfing, snowboarding and doing a little bit of stock trading and not having to fit into the corporate world: this is a great conversation for you, cause Garrett has been doing that for his whole career. He's living off of stocks and he started trading as early as high school. I'm going to link to a couple of things that Garrett has written, his papers and things, but also I'm going to link to a YouTube video by Sabine Hossenfelder, who you may recognize cause now she's getting huge on YouTube, but she's doing a great job of explaining physics. She even has an episode that I really like where she discusses some of the problem with the scientific establishment, from her perspective as well. Important Links: An Exceptionally Simple Theory of Everything on Wikipedia Quantum mechanics from a universal action reservoir An Explicit Embedding of Gravity and the Standard Model in E8 The Pacific Science Institute Also recommended Sabine Hossenfelder on What's Going Wrong in Particle Physics About Garrett Lisi Antony Garrett Lisi, known as Garrett Lisi, is an American Theoretical Physicist who works as an independent researcher. Lisi has proposed a new "theory of everything" — a grand unified theory that explains all the elementary particles, as well as gravity. His theory is based on a mathematical shape called "E8". With 248 symmetries, E8 is very large and complex and Garrett believes the relationships of its symmetries correspond to known particles and forces, including gravity. Throughout his career in research and education, he has made full use of the technological tools available and developed strong expertise in advanced problem solving, the invention of mathematical algorithms, and complex calculations. This extensive background in science, education, and computing enables him to be very effective in addressing the complex social as well as technological needs of those wishing to solve hard problems. Currently Lisi is the director of The Pacific Science Institute, a "Science Hostel" that aims to provide scientists the freedom to explore the boundaries of knowledge in an independent and transdisciplinary research community outside the confines of traditional academic institutions.

Welcome to the Crazy Wisdom podcast. I'm Stewart Alsop, and in this episode, I'm joined by Stephen Wolfram, a distinguished scientist and the founder of Wolfram Research. Throughout our conversation, we explore a range of topics including Stephen's revitalized work on a fundamental theory of physics, the profound implications of this work for understanding the universe and its laws, and the intersection of these theories with computational technology and AI. We also discuss how these advanced concepts might shape future technological developments and philosophical inquiries into AI's role in society and personal identity. Timestamps [00:00:00] - Stephen Wolfram discusses revisiting his physics theory from the 1990s and the rapid advancements made since 2019. [00:05:00] - Explores implications of his physics project on AI, machine learning, and philosophical questions about the universe's existence. [00:10:00] - Describes the universe's construction from a network of discrete points, explaining emergent phenomena like black holes. [00:15:00] - Discusses the interface between the discrete network model of the universe and concepts of quantum mechanics. [00:20:00] - Shifts focus to computational theory, introducing the "Ruliad" that encompasses all possible computational rules. [00:25:00] - Talks about AI's generative capabilities and its evolving relationship with human cognition and creativity. [00:30:00] - Discusses practical applications of his theoretical work in technology development and complex systems understanding. [00:35:00] - Considers the societal and ethical implications of AI, and the concept of co-evolving with AI in a symbiotic relationship. [00:40:00] - Explores philosophical impacts of AI on human identity, decision-making, and future societal norms. [00:45:00] - Reflects on personal impacts of his work, the continuity of identity through AI, and digital legacies. [00:50:00] - Concludes with thoughts on AI's potential role in human exploration and understanding of the universe. [00:55:00] - Discusses computational thinking and the integration of computational methods in modern problem-solving. Key Insights Revival of Fundamental Physics Theories: Stephen Wolfram discussed reigniting his work on the fundamental theory of physics, an endeavor he first conceptualized in the early 1990s. He returned to these theories with fresh perspectives and the help of young physicists, leading to rapid advancements that surpassed his initial expectations, demonstrating that foundational theories in physics can evolve significantly with the incorporation of new data and technologies. Interconnection Between Physics and Computation: Wolfram elucidated how his latest work in physics unexpectedly bears significant implications for fields like AI, machine learning, and distributed computing. The formalism developed for explaining the universe has versatile applications, suggesting a profound connectivity between physical laws and computational processes. Philosophical Questions on Existence and Regularity: The conversation delved into deep philosophical questions such as why the universe exists and whether the laws of physics are inevitable. Wolfram's approach suggests that these existential queries are not only theoretical but can be addressed in a scientific framework, proposing that our observations of the universe are deeply influenced by human perspectives and limitations. Discrete Network Model of the Universe: Wolfram proposes that the universe is constructed from a network of discrete points, which he likens to atoms of space. This model suggests that all phenomena in the universe, including particles and black holes, emerge from this underlying network, offering a novel way of understanding the fabric of space and time beyond the continuous models traditionally used in physics. Concept of the Ruliad: A significant portion of the discussion focused on the "Ruliad," a conceptual framework that encompasses all possible rules and computations. This idea broadens the scope of computational theory by suggesting a meta-level at which all possible computational processes coexist and interact, providing a new lens through which to view the universe and its complexities. AI's Impact on Creative and Intellectual Pursuits: Wolfram touched upon the transformative impact of AI on creativity and intellectual activities, suggesting that AI not only automates tasks but also enhances human capabilities in arts and sciences. This co-evolution with AI could potentially lead to new forms of art, science, and understanding, radically altering how humans engage with complex problems and creative endeavors. Symbiosis with AI: The episode concluded with a reflection on the future relationship between humans and AI. Wolfram posited that as AI continues to advance, humans will increasingly form a symbiotic relationship with these systems. This integration promises to augment human memory, decision-making, and creativity, potentially leading to a profound shift in how we perceive our capabilities and limitations in relation to technology.

Gravity defies quantum mechanics. What does that mean for a theory of everything? There's a pursuit of simplicity and unification in theoretical physics, aiming for a single mathematical law to unify quantum mechanics and gravity: a theory of everything. But while other forces have been successfully unified, gravity resists integration — casting doubt on the likelihood of ever unlocking the theory of all theories. As physicist Janna Levin explains, black holes, with their strong space-time curvature, provide insights into this challenge. Levin draws parallels to mathematicians' incompleteness theorems, noting the inherent limitations in such an overarching theory. Acknowledging the complexity of the endeavor, Levin emphasizes the need to embrace and explore gravity's enigmatic nature fully. In doing so, the pursuit of unification might still yield profound insights, even if a comprehensive theory of everything remains elusive. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ❍ About The Well ❍ Do we inhabit a multiverse? Do we have free will? What is love? Is evolution directional? There are no simple answers to life's biggest questions, and that's why they're the questions occupying the world's brightest minds.
