On this episode, I'm so excited to bring to you Alyse Bacine, a 1/3 Sacral Manifesting Generator and breathwork practitioner (and also just an amazing human). We chat ALL about breathwork, where to start, taking the intimidation out of the practice, how to start healing generational patterns and connecting to the quantum realm of possibility. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did!Alyse Bacine is a Breathwork Practitioner, Spiritual Mentor, and the CEO of Alyse Breathes. She has her Master's in Counseling Psychology and certifications in both Social Emotional Learning and Mindfulness Practices, as well as an extensive background in the mental health field where she served as a school counselor for 10+ years and received a grant to implement a meditation program at her school. Knowing that she wanted to expand her mission of healing familial and ancestral trauma, and normalizing breathwork and meditation practices, she opened her own business and quickly became a six-figure mentor. Alyse helps high-achieving women that feel stuck in their wealth, partnership, psychic abilities, and trauma, transform their current realities to get to their next-level selves. Her programs are deeply rooted in healing with the support of the Akashic Records, so that women can navigate work, love, and life as powerful leaders, without the burden of trauma playing a role in their highest potential. Knitting in Passing Riley finished the Reinpack Bag (free Ravelry Download she was knitting for my Mom, her grandmother. We bought yarn at Staci's Stitches. The yarn is a super bulky t-shirt yarn from Hoooked Zpaghetti. She did most of the bag in a white with black polka dots and then black towards the bottom. The black yarn was definitely thinner, which wasn't ideal but as long as Mom doesn't use it to store small buttons or screws, it should be just fine. I gave Riley a very brief kitchener stitch overview and she flew through the rest of it to close up this bag. I'm so proud of her. In My Travels I visited with Laura in Orleans over the last two weekends. We went to a movie theater to see A Man Called Otto. We browsed Provincetown, which is a bit sleepy in the offseason. We had fun browsing a few shops. We did a taste test of 3 peanut butter cups. Of the three milk chocolate peanut butter cups, Hilliard's Candy was our favorite followed by The Providence Fudge Factory and then Hot Chocolate Sparrow.  I taught Laura how to make homemade stovetop popcorn and that nearly turned into a disaster when we thought we ruined the bottom of a Les Creuset but were able to clean/remove the stain with vinegar and baking soda. We also visited the Antique Center & Cape Abilities Thrift Store in Yarmouth, MA. I made a quick trip to Adventures in Knitting in Harwich on Saturday. I bought 2 skeins of yarn and a set of Addi sock needles. Toimittaja on Minna Korhonen.

Special thanks to our patrons, including our new patron Julian and Honorary Antler Queens Courtney and Jade!    My guest this week is the Queen Bee of Yellowjackets content, Kelly McClure.   We talked all about the evolution of female and LGBTQ+ characters, and growing up in the 90s. We were both in high school at the same time as the class of 96, so prepare for a lot of 90s nostalgia!   Kelly McClure is Salon's Nights and Weekends editor, and her work has been featured in Vulture, The A.V. Club, Vanity Fair, Cosmopolitan, Nylon, Vice (where she became the first official music editor), my personal favorite, BUST (where she also worked as the music editor), and many other publications. In 2022 she started her own publishing imprint, WolfieVibes Publications, and released her debut novella, Something Is Always Happening Somewhere in May of 2022. It's described as a visceral tale of grief with horror elements. She wrote a fantastic article titled “Yellowjackets is gay as hell. Why that's just what we needed right now” which plays into what we talked about in this episode. Creating and sustaining a successful photo career is no easy feat. To help aspiring young imagemakers acquire the needed creative concepts and business skills, two New York-based organizations—ASMP NY and BKC—have teamed up to offer the innovative mentorship, education, and industry immersion program The Bridge. Open to individuals from 18- to 26-years-old, The Bridge embraces diversity and offers opportunity to underserved communities, regardless of formal photography experience. Best of all, this four-month, real world program is free to accepted students. We first learned about The Bridge during a chat with program co-founder Liam Alexander for the show ASMP-NY and the Future of Photo Trade Organizations in February 2022. Since the program's second year recently wrapped with a gallery exhibition in Brooklyn, and plans are in the works to expand The Bridge to other ASMP chapters in 2023, we wanted to learn more about this valuable initiative in advance of the next application window this spring. For this week's podcast, we're joined by Alexander, who sheds light on The Bridge program's inner workings and educational goals during the first half of the show. After a break, we speak with 2022 Bridge graduate Eli Edwards, who describes what he learned through the program, and the resulting shift in the pictures he makes, as well as in his creative point of view. The Nylon Curtain turned 40 last September, and we can't help but take one last look at it as we start the new year.      Back in September, we did our album spotlight where we discussed the history and making of the album along with our track-by-track commentary. This time, we're speaking with two people who helped make the album into the classic we all know today.      Our guests for this episode are Larry Franke and Bradsahw Leigh. Both were engineers at A&R Recording where Billy worked with Phil Ramone to produce his string of hit albums from the late 70s through the mid-80s.      Larry and Brad were involved with many of those records. And, for this episode, they're taking us through what it was like creating Billy Joel's most sonically ambitious album.      You'll hear about the studio tricks they used for sound effects, how they used analog effects well before today's digital plugins, and how the band and studio crew went about fulfilling Billy's goal of making an album inspired by the Beatles' Sergeant Pepper's.      With track-by-track commentary, stories from the sessions, and deep dives into the recording technology of the day, it's the closest you can get to being a fly on the wall of the live room and mixing booth back in 1982.     Join us for another look behind The Nylon Curtain.   ------   Email us: glasshousespodcast@gmail.com   Glass Houses - A Billy Joel Podcast on the web / social media: Website: http://www.glasshousespod.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glasshousespodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glasshousespod/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/glasshousespod  Discord: https://discord.gg/6G6cMRFu7T   Support the podcast: Paypal: https://paypal.me/glasshousespod Venmo: @MGrosvenor   Produced by Michael Grosvenor & Jack Firneno for Groove Music Marketing

We had the pleasure of interviewing carbae over Zoom video! carobae, the moniker of Nashville writer, artist and producer, Caroline Baker, released her debut album scared to go to sleep, due out now via too drunk for a tuesday records / STEM. Recent single, “he'll never know” starts off with carobae's acoustic guitar strumming to her aching ethereal vocals speaking to an old lover about past issues that are of no concern now that she's in a better place b/w the soft loud chorus to the very dark “stab my back.” “he'll never know” is completely written and produced by carobae herself. In the simplest form, “he'll never know” is about freedom from who I'd been in past relationships because now I've found someone who doesn't need me to change who I am or my needs for their own. I wrote and produced this song alone a little over two years ago when I had done a lot of personal growth and realization that I deserved to be with someone who didn't treat me like an afterthought or burden. I've been holding onto this song for a while now, and I'm still with who I wrote it about - he's eve playing drums on the record. In the past I've released a good amount of music about one-sided relationships and not feeling like I've been enough, and “he'll never know” coming out now feels like the perfect follow up to those old stories I've told. I think everyone needs to hear that there's love out there that you don't have to bend over backwards for and that you deserve simply by just existing. – carobaescared to go to sleep's tracklist is comprised of the indie pop singer-songwriter confessions from the heart, with candid and colorful songs written and produced solely by carobae as well as songs co-written and co-produced with Brandon Shoop (sophie cates, Quinn XCII), Sean Kennedy (UPSAHL, Role Model, Nessa Barrett), Lauren Mandel (LØLØ, TALK, Maggie Lindemann, MOTHICA), Raziel (Siiickbrain, Poutyface, Slush Puppy) and Megan Redmond (Taylor Edwards, Charlotte Sands, Taela). With this single and prior singles, title track “scared to go to sleep” b/w “if I don't leave the house, “till the day i ___” b/w “every time i close my eyes,” which was included in Consequence's “Song of the Week” and “dead ends/happy endings,” carobae released b-sides that complement the tone and theme of each single. With the release of “scared to go to sleep,” carobae launched new merch items, releasing “behind the song” videos on her YouTube showing fans how she produces and writes each song, and giving fans “restless pages” designed as an activity book to be done while one is listening to the new songs. scared to go to sleep is a shift from carobae's relationship/heartbreak songs fans are familiar with, showing them a new kind of heartbreak sound – heartbreak from the world. carobae first started releasing her own music in 2019 through a handful of EPs starting with songs from 3am, followed by The Longest Year: Part One in 2020 and in 2021 she dropped The Longest Year: Part Two. These early releases earned her raves from NYLON, Ones to Watch and Alternative Press. Along the way, she's garnered over 40 MILLION streams on Spotify, who featured her on a billboard in downtown Nashville and featured her songs on numerous playlists including New Music Friday, Fresh Finds, Fresh & Chill, Indie Pop, and more. Growing from a tiny seed of an idea to a flourishing company, the couple behind a subversive new product shares the pivotal moments that fueled their major success in the sustainable confectionery industry.  Taylor and Brennan Clarke are the Co-Creators of Amborella Organics, a revolutionary line of organic seed-bearing lollipops with herbs and flowers throughout. After years of grit and hard work, Amborella products are now featured in Urban Outfitters, Nordstrom and Uncommon Goods as well as hundreds of trend-setting cafés, florists and curated shops around the world. Amborella Organics has been featured in Goop, Daily Mail, Food Network Magazine, ABC News, Nylon and Epicurious.  Amborella Organics leads the confectionery market in conversations about sustainability, ethical means of production and conscious consumer goods. Their lollipops feature flavors like strawberry and basil, champagne and roses, and lavender and lemongrass, with thoughtful product packaging. After enjoying the luxurious flavors of an Amborella lollipop, you simply plant the stick horizontally in the ground and grow the seeds of a plant you just consumed. It's beautiful and it keeps giving back to you and the earth!  There were no other lollipops like them anywhere, and the Clarkes overcame every adversity to make them a reality.  You can accept challenges and rise to the occasion Taylor and Brennan Clarke are no strangers to the challenges of growing a business. Beyond the usual red tape of starting a new company, they wanted to stick to their own rigorous standards of ingredient sourcing, flavor formulation, pouring and packaging. This would prove to be an incredible obstacle, but they made it happen through sheer determination and hard work. After being invited to promote Amborella at a trade show for the first time, they stayed up late the night before the event - making their website on Squarespace in bed. It paid off. Immediately after the event, they received their first wholesale account: It was Alfred, a trendy influencer in the coffee space promoting small brands from Los Angeles to Tokyo! Amborella Organics even went viral in 2017, reaching over ten million views with a video feature on NowThis News.  They were experiencing explosive growth when they found out that their lollipop manufacturer was closing up shop - with just two weeks of notice. In a moment that could have caused anyone to quit, Taylor and Brennan doubled down! They poured lollipops by hand and stacked boxes as high as the ceiling as their family and friends helped them fulfill thousands of orders.  Finally, they built a company headquarters with an organic kitchen and efficient in-house production.  Stick to your mission and your vision Most lollipops are formulated with lab-created ingredients, poured overseas, then packaged and branded. That's been done before - and the Clarkes had no interest in being just another candy company.  On top of all of this, they are frequently made with mass-production machines that are unable to handle the seeds and petals in Amborella's lollipops without breaking down.  In the midst of every challenge, there were roadblocks that could have easily made them compromise their vision. But with an unwavering commitment to their long-term goals for Amborella, the Clarkes accepted each challenge as an opportunity to improve the industry as a whole. Always be planting seeds Amborella Organics is not just about lollipops. It's about a future of sustainability and respect for the planet, as evidenced by their tagline: “Eat, Plant, Love.” Just like you can plant seeds from every Amborella lollipop, the Clarkes plant seeds of change for the confectionery industry with every hurdle they knock down.  It's a sunny reminder that we can create a better world for all those who follow in our footsteps - by believing in the power of our ideas.  Quotes “We didn't want to create something that already existed. The copy-and-paste model was not interesting to us. Beyond seed-bearing technology, we also wanted a delicious flavor that wasn't already out there.” “We have ambitions to do a lot of things - but we will always be botanical, organic and different.” “We truly have stuck with our vision. It has been ten times as hard, but it has been worth it. Throughout this entire process, people have tried to get us to compromise our vision to make things cheaper or easier, and we have stuck to our guns. We know who we are, and who our customer is. We're confident in that!” “If it was something we had to do alone, it would have been too impossible.” “It's important to create a dialogue about what can be sustainable!” Links mentioned in this episode: Visit the Amborella Organics website at https://amborellaorganics.com/  Read Amborella's growing press features on their company website at  https://amborellaorganics.com/pages/press  Find Amborella's wholesale application by clicking here: https://amborellaorganics.com/pages/wholesaleapplication   Follow Amborella Organics on Instagram for fun giveaways and new flavor releases at https://www.instagram.com/amborellaorganics/  Connect with the team at Amborella Organics on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/company/amborella-organics/

Aya Kanai has done what most people don't know how to do— change industries. Over twenty years, she rose through the fashion industry ranks, with experience as a Fashion Director at publications including Cosmopolitan, NYLON, Women's Health, and Teen Vogue, ultimately becoming Editor-in-Chief of Marie Claire. But then Aya started having the desire to evolve. She was genuinely curious to understand how the tech platforms that impact our lives daily shape their own narratives. Connecting the dots between fashion and tech was possible because of her expertise in visual storytelling. Today, Aya is the Head of Editorial and Creative for Google Shopping, where she oversees the development and execution of merchandising and consumer content. She was previously the head of content and creator partnerships at Pinterest. In this episode, Aya takes us on her journey from her college days, where she trained as a Puppeteer, to that junior year college moment when she wanted to put off getting a job and instead applied for an experimental puppet theater fellowship. That opportunity would take her to Poland, the Czech Republic, France, Japan, and the UK, with the only rule that she could not have her feet on American soil for that entire year. That experience taught her to be courageous, independent, and resourceful in challenging circumstances; remember, there were no cell phones or laptops! Aya explains her transition to tech, how she remained fearless while tackling her new experiences, and what she has learned from her peers. She also shares why it's okay to be a beginner and that at various points in your career, you will be a beginner again and again, for better or worse, so you better start getting comfortable with it.

Virginia Postrel is a California-based journalist who has written four books, including her most recent one, The Fabric of Civilization: How Textiles Made The World, (which I highly recommend.) In this episode, Virginia talks about why the history of fabric and civilization is a “story of innovation,” the mechanized Italian silk mills that predated the Industrial Revolution by two centuries, cotton's history and dominance in today's clothing, advances in synthetic fabrics, and the tragic life of Wallace Carothers, the almost-unknown inventor of nylon. This week it's a beauty news round-up; I'm talking about the latest print issue - the penultimate print - of Allure and dipping into the history of the magazine, and I'll be talking about the early reactions to Sephora's online store here in the UK and briefly wondering what Taylor Swift's visuals for her new album Midnights could look like. I had to dedicate much of this episode to Allure because I'm a longterm fan who's seen it change hands from founder Linda Wells, to former Nylon editor Michelle Lee, to the current editor in chief, Jessica Cruel. Discussing print and people of colour comes up and I'd love to know your thoughts on the conclusions I make. Sometimes it feels like the major magazines bring in people of colour way too late, which leaves them in a vulnerable position, as if they alone have to save the title. Let me know what you think! Tag me when you're listening over on Instagram @beautymepodcast or reach out to me on Twitter @beautymepodcast. I also give my thoughts on the latest print cover over on my TikTok, @charissekenion. I also touch on Sephora's arrival in the UK - for now it's online only and it's getting a lot of criticism, but I'm intrigued to see if they're going to bring in same-day delivery for us as well as the States - and I wonder what kind of visuals we can expect as Taylor Swift's album Midnights takes over the internet and makes Spotify history. At the point of recording Taylor had only released several lyric videos and one video for Anti-Hero, but this morning I've seen she's released a video for Bejeweled. Hattie wants a unicorn because she thinks hers was lost. TBD. From the Armchair The Girl Next Door Podcast: I thoroughly enjoyed their annual Fall Extravaganza episodeand this year was no exception. I didn't especially enjoy the Serial Podcast recent update about Adnan Syed's case but I was relieved to hear that Syed was officially ruled out as a suspect in the murder of Hae Min Lee in 1999 (though he served 23 years in prison) Check out this local Baltimore news story. Congrats to Syed & and his family and especially his fierce friend and advocate Rabia Chaudry. Check out this video on Rabia's Instagram Feed for more details. Listen to Season 1 of Undisclosed if you want more about this case (especially if you only ever listed to Serial). I also enjoyed episodes 1 & 2 of Rabia's new podcast- Rabia & Ellyn Solve the Case.
