Picture this... You're in your university dorm, studying for finals when you get a phone call. They ask YOU to audition in front of some of the biggest names in music and you haven't played in over a year and a half. Fast forward a few months and now you're on stage, touring the states, with fans singing your songs louder than you can hear yourself sing them. Your songs are now being featured on Monday Night Football and Netflix Series "Suits". Let's just say that this Rockstar/Physiotherapist is far from a snooze fest... On episode #17, JB and Rig go the deepest with "The Blue Stones" lead singer and guitarist, Tarek Jafar. Tarek walks us through what it was like to receive the phone call that changed his life and how the pieces just started to fall into place thereafter. Tarek is currently working as a small town Physiotherapist but has pivoted more towards the music industry... and can you blame him? He opens up from the start of this interview and shares some big secrets to his success. The main one being that going full eggs in to do something you love might not be the best option for everyone. Having that solid ground (physiotherapy in his case) is what kept this rockstar moving forward and helped fund his dream. Let's find out where Tarek is at today.

We sat down with Tarek Jafar of The Blue Stones, a Canadian rock band that blends blues, alternative, and indie influences on their new album, Hidden Gems. Produced by Mutemath frontman, Paul Meany, the album colors the band’s rock n’ roll sound with this fusion of influences and new lyrical approaches. Amongst some awesome insight on the album, Jafar also opened up to us about “Careless”, one of the new songs off of Hidden Gems. Drawing on a unique influence of pop and RnB sounds, “Careless” stands out from the rest of The Blue Stones’ discography in the best way. It’s an ode to their songwriting versatility and the true range of the band, unbound by the “limitations” of genre. Jafar admitted that they were nervous about the change in sound, but Justin Tessier, Jafar’s counterpart in the band, convinced him that “Careless” was a step in the right direction:“He mentioned it’s more of a sell out move to not release a song that you actually care about. So if we were to hold that song back from being released because we didn’t think it would do well, then isn’t that what selling out is?”After spending a lot of time in quarantine writing for other artists, Jafar also expressed a huge interest in collaborating with other bands and songwriters in the future. The Blue Stones released their sophomore album, Hidden Gems on March 19th via Entertainment One. For the album they had the opportunity to work with producer Paul Meany (Mutemath, Twenty One Pilots), who led the band to explore and create music in a different way than they had before, as well as approach and tackle lyrics in an entirely new light. While making the album, Tarek learned confidence and strength-of-self not only in his personal lives but in the lyrics he penned through expressing acceptance of his flaws and growth from heartbreak, which also translated into taking more musical risks. When Jafar and Justin Tessier (drums/vocals) formed The Blue Stones, they were facing uncertainty about who they were individually. What they did know for sure, though, was that they wanted to make music together - and, so they did. Following the success of their debut album, Black Holes, the band quickly found a following in the alternative rock world that led to them sharing the stage with the likes of grandson, Welshly Arms, and Reignwolf. As the band were working with Paul Meany on what would become their sophomore-effort, Hidden Gems, they realized they wanted to take the sound they had become known for and give it a new edge. Across the ten songs on the album, the band pairs rock songs built to be played in a stadium with layered, R&B leaning numbers and moody, grunge tracks. The songs resonate with a powerful emotional intensity both sonically and lyrically, with Jafar penning his most personal lyrics to date. Centered around self-confidence, the album works through accepting your strengths and weaknesses, touching upon heartbreak and bad habits. Thank you for listening!
