Jean Olson, age 70, describes her 13 years in the Foreign Service as an “odd and torturous path,” that included a successful class action suit against the federal government. Jean left the Foreign Service (stints in Europe and South America) for her hometown in Wisconsin to be her mother's caregiver and to serve as (volunteer) President of the Village Council. At age 57, and ‘unemployed' for seven years, Jean created a path to retirement. She rejoined the Foreign Service for seven more years, having to start over as a “baby diplomat” — a “lesson in humility.” Jean choice of Las Cruces, NM. as her retirement home affords her access to a university, a cluster of good friends, affordable housing, and excellent Mexican restaurants. Best of all--no snow shoveling! Since her move, Jean has served on the Board of the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum, worked with a Refugee Resettlement project, and is currently engaged with a children's Literacy program. When I retired from the Foreign Service, I found a home in New Mexico with a university, good friends, affordable housing, and great Mexican restaurants. - Jean OlsonConnect with Jean Email: jean.olson@yahoo.com

Why Your Leadership Mindset is the Ultimate Crisis Tool In today's unpredictable world, leadership is more critical than ever. But how do you lead effectively when the ground is shifting beneath your feet? We dove deep with David Johnson, a veteran leader and CEO of Verve, to uncover the core principles of leading through economic uncertainty. His advice boils down to one powerful truth: it starts with your mindset. The biggest mistake a leader can make is inaction. David emphasizes that waiting for the storm to pass only wastes precious time and opportunity. A true leader breaks down overwhelming problems into manageable pieces and gets the team moving. This isn't about reckless action; it's about embracing small, continuous progress that builds confidence and momentum.

Ross Barkan is a 35 year-old American journalist and novelist from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. His third novel, Glass Century, was published on 6 May 2025.On a semi-vacation to London this summer, Ross and Jack met to speak about Ross's favourite Martin Amis novel, Inside Story. This the first episode of the series to deal explicitly, and at length, with Donald Trump.Looking beyond the playful concept of 'The Maggot Probability' (first coined by Kingsley Amis to explain the degenerative effects of an ageing brain), Ross and Jack discuss Amis's graver concerns about true impact of America's septuagenarian president on its politics and political culture. As a New Yorker, Ross recognises what he calls Trump's "outer-borough mindset", an attitude of adversity towards the elites of Manhattan who famously paid Trump little serious attention before his meteoric rise to office in 2016 forced them to.That mindset, he argues, became Trump's calling card to the left behind of America, for whom Washington had come to represent the same den of iniquity and aloofness that the gleaming towers of The Big Apple had to Trump in the 70s and 80s.And yet, while Amis does not take Trump lightly, Ross says his criticisms of Trump lack the corrosive power of the pen that Amis was otherwise known for. Amis confesses to taking an arch tone on the subject in Inside Story, though says he does so only because Trump is a "sick joke".It's suggested later in the conversation that while Amis excelled at diagnosing modern pathologies in characters like John Self, he may have bottled it when it came to confronting the real thing in Trump. Does it take a true New Yorker to satirise this century's most controversial Western leader? It may help to read Ross's new novel before answering. Finally, listen to this episode to discover what Ross took as indispensable writing advice from Amis in Inside Story.FOLLOW US ON TWITTER/ X: @mymartinamisFIND US ON YOUTUBE Hosted on Acast. Delve into this classic 1990's record with me.
Featuring brand new music from Erik Deutsch's upcoming release “This Was Then'; a meeting of legendary guitar minds between Charlie Hunter and Ella Feingold; Joe Alterman and Mocean Worker paying tribute to the one of the greatest, Les McCann; BK psycho-funk geniuses Breastfist; a visit to the electric roots of NYC legend Phil Haynes; the final recording of late Japanese master Ryuichi Sakamoto; a new look at the Bill Evans Trio from the Verve vault; and the creme de la creme of France, Air.
Aron! is only 22, but his music seems to exist outside of time. A singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from North Carolina, he studied classical guitar, jazz voice, and film scoring—playing everything from indie rock in a college band to Nat King Cole covers in retirement homes—before landing on a sound that feels both old school and strikingly fresh. (He calls his sound “vintage pop”.) His debut EP cozy you (and other nice songs) began as a self-produced student project, recorded in a college studio with friends. It was completed before he signed with Verve Records—one of the most iconic jazz labels in the world—and showcases his gift for timeless songwriting, intimate performance, and warm, sophisticated arrangements. He first gained attention online through casual videos of himself playing standards and originals, quietly amassing a loyal audience. Among his early champions was Ryan Lerman (Scary Pockets), who helped connect Aron! with a wider musical community. Here he reflects on his musical roots, his love of old songs, the strange path from Instagram to Verve, and the challenge of staying grounded in a moment of rapid change. The songs may sound old, but the feeling is immediate. The muse, it seems, doesn't care what year it is. www.third-story.com www.leosidran.substack.com www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story
Good morning from Pharma and Biotech daily: the podcast that gives you only what's important to hear in Pharma and Biotech world.Former FDA official Peter Marks criticized the agency's new risk-based COVID-19 vaccine framework, stating it contradicts the administration's transparency and science standards. The CDC's advisory committee recommended Merck's infant RSV vaccine, and Novavax's approval delay raised concerns about politicization of drug approval processes. Lilly's Verve deal revealed regulatory turmoil following Marks' resignation. Meanwhile, Trump's CDC pick supports vaccine safety, Novartis made a large bet on cardiovascular disease targets, and RFK cut US funding from vaccine alliance Gavi. The biopharma industry is hiring less international talent, and pharma companies face challenges with failed immuno-oncology projects. Evotec is hosting a webinar on preserving quality in the pharmaceutical industry.
Publicly traded U.K. investment firm and company builder Syncona is restructuring its fund amid ongoing market challenges in the biopharma industry. On the latest BioCentury This Week podcast, BioCentury's analysts discuss how the firm will steer its portfolio toward returns for shareholders, while aiming to build a new fund away from public markets. The analysts then assess Eli Lilly's takeout of cardiovascular base editing company Verve, and what Washington Editor Steve Usdin calls FDA's new “two-track” future for evaluating new therapies for approval — those with clear-cut benefits and those with ambiguous efficacy safety and efficacy profiles — in light of the many departures of senior FDA staff. They also discuss NASDAQ's largest biopharma IPO — by Caris — in two years, the latest obesity readouts, FDA Commissioner Marty Makary's priority pathway and Usdin's Q&A with new BIO Chair Fritz Bittenbender. Good morning from Pharma and Biotech daily: the podcast that gives you only what's important to hear in Pharma and Biotech world.Ey's 2025 Biotech Beyond Borders report reveals that over one-third of biotech companies have less than a year of cash left, indicating financial challenges within the industry. The report emphasizes the need for a return to basics for biotech companies. Additionally, industry experts are discussing FDA Commissioner Makary's push to modernize the FDA and speed up regulatory processes. Scholar Rock has seen positive results with a weight loss combination therapy, and the FDA's new voucher program has been met with some optimism from biotech investors. Overall, the biotech industry is facing financial struggles, but there are opportunities for growth and innovation in the future.BioNTech and CureVac were once enemies, with BioNTech attacking CureVac's "failed" COVID vaccine program. However, they are now merging, with BioNTech buying CureVac in a $1.25 billion all-stock acquisition. The biopharma industry has seen a string of dramatic deals, with companies paying high premiums for acquisitions. This includes Sanofi paying a 300% premium for Vigil Neuroscience and Novartis acquiring Regulus for $800 million upfront. Overseas biosimilars companies can be sued in the US, potentially dissuading them from targeting the US market and benefiting domestic producers. Lilly's $1.3 billion acquisition of Verve in the gene editing space has been met with skepticism from analysts. Biotechs are seeking partnerships as the industry moves forward, with events like BIO2025 kicking off. The industry is facing challenges such as layoffs at companies like Lycia, while AstraZeneca makes a $5.3 billion AI bet with China's CSPC for chronic disease pills. Overall, the biopharma industry is experiencing a period of intense deal-making and strategic shifts.

This episode is brought to you by Better Beer. TRAINING WEEKS The 2025 FTK podcast hosts are back together are giving up their spot for last week's FTK OG takeover. Jack cracks 160km in his 3x key workout week at Font Romeu where he spends plenty of time training with Sondre Moen (2:05:48 Marathon PB). Joel does another big mileage week that sees him running more often than he's used to and unfortunately for him a fair bit slower than he's used to (especially at this weekend's Ferny Creek run). Tess updates the listeners on the medical issue that surfaced in an MRI which explained why she needed to play it safe and skip some runs later in the week. THE BIG Q Tess asks Jack and Joel their opinion on how to coach an athlete that is struggling for motivation this deep into a marathon block. The team discuss a variety of answers that should help the athlete enjoy their upcoming race without the pressure of a pre-negotiated "goal time". GIVE SOME KUDOS Jack sends his Kudos to an incredibly fast runner while Tess uses self-reflection during this short period of injury to give kudos. Joel goes left of centre and sends his in the direction of Uranium glass. TWHSOITWTWATSA Tess is not sure about a certain promotional video seen on the Verve socials. Jack submits his entry which is an interview from a Villanova athlete before his 5000m at the NCAA champs. Joel can't decide between two this week so he does the noble thing and submits both. One recipient has received this award numerous times throughout the season while the second submission is of an anonymous poster of the Facebook page Athletes Australia wanting advice on what super shoes to buy their 9 year old child. Send us a textVox of the Chameleons stops by to discuss his long career, his evolution, their new record, the world, and more. *****Having released their first studio recordings in over 20 years in 2024 (Where Are You? of new material and Tomorrow Remember Yesterday which consisted of re-recorded archival tracks), Chameleons have been gearing up the release of their upcoming album Arctic Moon later 2025 which will be their first studio full-length since 2001's Why Call It Anything. He explains, "It's quite different from anything Chameleons has done before, and I know this will probably polarize the legacy audience, but we're quite excited about how it's developing. I think the songwriting is much more mature in a lot of ways, which is to be expected, I suppose, given our age, but I, for one, really believe we're taking the band forward, and I'm quite excited about it." Not planning on playing too much from the new album (“we don't really want the songs spoiling on such platforms as YouTube until the record is actually out”), the new album will undoubtedly be embraced by old and new fans alike. “Our approach to making the music hasn't changed,” Vox hints, “although having found a regular producer in Christophe Bride at Oxygene has helped our development tremendously. His studio in Manchester, UK, is a great environment to work in. We feel our sound is fresher and more contemporary, which seems to resonate very strongly with our younger audience that are turning out to see us in such great numbers.” Long cited as a hugely influential act, having inspired the likes of Verve, Oasis, White Lies, The Slow Readers Club, Interpol, The Killers and Editors, among countless others and known for their transformative musical catalog and intense and emotionally charged live performances, Chameleons have created a legacy that extends beyond their four studio albums. Following their debut single "In Shreds" in 1982, the band released three seminal albums: the widely acclaimed Script of the Bridge (1983), cited by many sources as a masterpiece way ahead of its time, and its follow-up, What Does Anything Mean? Basically!' (1984), Strange Times (1986), and Why Call It Anything? (2001). Their unique sound quickly captivated the public through their mix of melancholic yet energetic and powerful tunes, hypnotic, ethereal riffs, and the potent, timeless lyrical style. Chameleons are considered one of the most influential guitar bands of the 80s and 90s, contributing substantially to the post-punk, shoegaze, and indie scenes. They are often regarded as one of the most underrated bands ever to emerge from Manchester, England. Chameleons are Reg Smithies (guitar), Vox (bass, vocals, lyrics), Stephen Rice (guitar), Danny Ashberry (keyboards), and Todd Demma (drums).******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. Enjoy our discussion of The Verve's "A Storm In Heaven."
This won't be the last time you hear the Rolling Stones but this is the episode wherein we discuss "The Last Time" from early 1965. After acknowledging the chorus copped from the Staple Singers, we move on to the riff, the riff, the riff! We also note the strange connection to German Oompah music. The second in the parade comes from their producer and manager Andrew Oldham and his Orchestra. Obviously, this is a rearrangement rather than a cover, and obviously, it's infamous in the wake of Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony." It's totally tubular! In '66 to North Carolina's Nomads gave the song the garage treatment and the vocals are snottier and the kick drum is busier! The same year Phil & The Frantics authored a version with strange strangled vocals, an added organ with "Gloria" flourishes and it's the most oompah of all. We break the mold for "Do You Understand Me" by The Jujus, a song which steals the riff but scrambles it a bit - it's a classic! The last word goes the Who, who covered the song in 67 who underplay the riff and focus on Pete Townshend's thundering chords and Keith Moon's wild drumming. Oompah!

Welcome to the Health Marketing Collective, where strong leadership meets marketing excellence. In today's episode, host Sara Payne sits down with Mike Cronin, Cofounder and Chief Strategist at Verve, to explore the evolving landscape of creativity in B2B healthcare marketing. Mike, whose impressive résumé includes brand and campaign strategy for UnitedHealth Group, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Optum, and revered consumer brands like Harley-Davidson and Samuel Adams, brings a rare blend of creative vision and strategic rigor to his work. His fundamental belief? That creative work's purpose is to move people, not just fill space. In this conversation, Mike and Sara dive deep into how B2B health brands can move beyond “safe” ideas and unlock emotionally resonant, unforgettable campaigns—even within highly regulated and risk-averse spaces. They discuss why simplicity is a superpower, the importance of strategic “boxes,” and how marketing leaders can create environments where big swings are encouraged, not stifled. Along the way, Mike shares memorable stories from his work (including a campaign that fused Lizzo's “Good as Hell” into healthcare advertising), offers insight into the universal human truths marketers often miss, and outlines what separates teams that produce great creative from those that simply make noise. Thank you for being part of the Health Marketing Collective, where strong leadership meets marketing excellence. The future of health care depends on it. Key Takeaways: Creativity Thrives Within Constraints: Mike challenges the conventional wisdom of “thinking outside the box.” He argues that true creativity is often unlocked not by limitless freedom, but by well-defined strategic constraints. It's within the confines of a focused brief—what Mike calls “the freedom of a tight brief”—that intelligent, emotionally resonant ideas emerge. Rather than aiming for “crazy” or “flashy,” the best creative is smart, intentional, and purpose-driven. Emotion and Human Truth are Universal, Even in B2B: B2B often gravitates toward rational benefits: cost savings, efficiency, or productivity. But, as Mike notes, even financial administrators and clinicians are humans first—they respond to messages that tap into universal emotions and experiences: hope, fear, dignity, and relief from frustration. Brands that connect on this human level, rather than just touting features and benefits, become memorable and meaningful. Strategic Alignment is the Key to Unlocking Great Creative: Teams that produce truly breakthrough work consistently prioritize strategy. When everyone is aligned on the core insight and brief, creativity can flow freely within those parameters. Conversely, weak or vague direction leads to “safe,” generic campaigns. Mike's experience shows that great creative always starts with a shared, sharp strategic foundation. Boldness is Essential for Breaking Through the Noise: Healthcare, especially B2B, often defaults to playing it safe (“everything's blue”)—but in a crowded marketplace, standing out is non-negotiable. Mike advocates for boldness that is grounded in the brand's truth and strategically anchored. The result: unforgettable, not just noisy, marketing. Leadership's Role: Foster Honesty, Empathy, and Trust: Leadership sets the tone for creativity and trust. Mike urges CMOs and marketing leaders to lead with clarity and honesty—eschewing “BS” and toxic positivity for real, truthful dialogue about challenges and opportunities. Teams (and audiences) respond to authenticity; when leaders call things as they are and create space for truth, better work results. Jason Brenner is the RVP of Healthcare & Lifesciences at LiveRamp and has been working in the advertising and ad tech industries for over 20 years. He is leading efforts on building data connectivity solutions for the healthcare and life sciences industries. Prior to LiveRamp, Jason has held leadership positions at Placed, Verve, PayPal, Time Inc., The New York Times, and Condé Nast. In this episode… Companies in industries like healthcare and life sciences are leveraging data collaboration to collect valuable insights to drive innovation and improve customer experiences. However, for many organizations, balancing data collaboration with privacy, security, and regulatory compliance obligations remains a significant challenge. With consumer trust at stake, and the risks of improper data handling, how can companies balance innovation with responsible data use? Data collaboration in healthcare presents both opportunities and challenges. Companies need to adopt privacy-by-design principles and engage legal and privacy teams early in the process. By implementing techniques such as data tokenization and de-identification, businesses can extract valuable insights while minimizing privacy and security risks. That's why companies like LiveRamp are making this process easier with a platform that transforms personally identifiable information into non-reversible tokens, allowing organizations to use data responsibly while minimizing privacy and security risks. In this episode of She Said Privacy/He Said Security, Jodi and Justin Daniels speak with Jason Brenner, RVP of Healthcare and Life Sciences at LiveRamp, about the critical role of privacy and security in data collaboration. Jason shares insights on how organizations are navigating a complex and fragmented regulatory landscape, the importance of adopting privacy-by-design principles, and engaging legal and privacy teams early in the process. He also shares how businesses can minimize data retention risks, the role of de-identification and tokenization in protecting sensitive information, and the importance of building customer trust through responsible data practices.
