On this episode of Headliners, Greg is joined by WELSHLY ARMS to talk about their new album WASTED WORDS & BAD DECISIONS.After dropping their anthemic single “Legendary” in 2017, the indie rock world was quickly introduced to Welshly Arms' penchant for unleashing larger-than-life alt-rock bangers and spine-tingling live performances. Their 2018 album No Place is Home has garnered over 350M total streams and provides a sensational musical journey that hits all the swaggery notes. Put simply, the band injects a powerful dose of emotion that continues to leave the Welshly Arms' faithful enamored. The band will be extremely active this spring. As they are set to drop their lead-up single “World is Watching” on March 24th before releasing their full-length album Wasted Words & Bad Decisions, on April 6th. The album comes right before the band embarks on a long-anticipated return to Europe for a month-long tour. Wasted Words & Bad Decisions was recorded in an old farmhouse in the outskirts of Cleveland, Ohio as the world endured lockdown. The tranquil and comfortable setting provided the platinum-selling five-piece band a welcome respite from the grueling demands of touring stateside and overseas. "With a long pause in touring and live performances due to the pandemic, we took time to reflect and refocus on our music,” says Sam Getz [Lead, Singer, Guitar]. “These songs speak to who we all are in this exact moment of our lives. Musically, we wanted this record to bring us back to the raw rock-n-roll that we had built the band on when we were jamming in the basement together. But, of course, we've also matured and gelled as musicians after touring the world together, and I think that intersection is what made Wasted Words & Bad Decisions so fun and rewarding to create." After dropping their anthemic single “Legendary” (now a certified platinum single in several European countries that has been streamed over 250 Million times) in 2017, the five Midwesterners were catapulted from playing local music clubs in Cleveland onto the world's largest rock festival stages including Lollapalooza, The Reading & Leeds Festival, Bottlerock, Rock am Ring, Hangout Music Fest, Shaky Knees, and more in less than a year's time. The quick rise for Getz, Jimmy Weaver [bass, vocals], Mikey Gould [drums], Bri Bryant [vocals], and Jon Bryant [voca ls] saw the band play for massive sold-out festival crowds instantly hooked by “Legendary” and other Welshly Arms' hits such as “Indestructible”, “Learn To Let Go”, and “Sanctuary” (the latter two were both Top Ten Songs in Germany) In mere months, Welshly Arms became indie-rock darlings cherished from Los Angeles to Warsaw. While being on the road in Europe and North America for seemingly two straight years, Welshly Arms' tunes appeared in popular media including Quentin Tarantino's award-winning film “The Hateful Eight” (Trailer), Underground 6 (Netflix), Empire (Fox), FIFA (EA Sports), and were used by major brands such as Miller Lite, Jeep, ESPN, MLB, NFL, and NASCAR, among many others. Heavily influenced by the classic Cleveland sound, the eclectic group harkened back to their diverse musical roots for their latest release; from jazz to soul, gospel to blues, rock to alternative, and everything in between. Wasted Words... is an impressive sonic evolution for a band that's known for smooth melodies, momentous choruses, bold guitar instrumentation, and slick production techniques. Hardcore fans will instantly recognize recently released singles such as “Are You Lonely,” “save me from the monster in my head,” and “Stand”, while fresh standouts like “Dangerous,” “One More...

Nick Wheeler from The All American Rejects is my guest today on the show . We talk about Nicks career in music as well as his new recording studio . Producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. As the co-founder, lead guitarist, and one of the primary songwriters of The All-American Rejects, he has sold over 5 million albums worldwide, with their single "Gives You Hell" hitting #1 on the Top 40 chart in 2009 and remaining on the charts for 36 weeks. Other hits include "Move Along," "Dirty Little Secret," and "It Ends Tonight," which all ranked in the top 10 on the Billboard Charts. Based in Nashville since 2015, Nickolas is now building Wheelhouse Studio, a freestanding space in East Nashville. In setting up his own studio, he credits historic spots he's worked in – the Village in Santa Monica, Barefoot Studios in Hollywood – in learning how to maximize both workflow and comfortability for artists. Wheelhouse Studio will have isolation, separate control and tracking rooms, as well as a lounge, kitchen, and outdoor courtyard space. Nickolas has been recording music since 1996 and making music professionally for almost 20 years. When artists come to record at Wheelhouse Studio, they can expect to feel taken care of by a producer who's ready to guide them to the next stage of their career and accomplish whatever they're wanting to create. The studio is a space for Wheeler to work with artists and writers "who are excited and passionate about what they're doing and open to collaboration in a vibey, comfortable, professional space." After attending Oklahoma State University for music theory, Nickolas has since honed his skills through an Advanced Certificate in mixing, engineering, and orchestration at Berklee College of Music, as well as becoming an Avid Certified Pro Tools User. Nickolas is also endorsed by Warm Audio, an Austin-based company that makes "some great reproductions of classic gear": he has their version of a Pultec EQP-1A, an LA-2A compressor, and several microphones. Wunder Audio (another Austin-based company) is also custom-building a console for the studio. As a guitar player, his guitar collection is in the triple digits – not to mention an extensive microphone collection: "I've collected a lot of fun toys to play with over the years from the road, stopping at music shops or things I've been inspired by in other studios that I felt I needed a version of in my own space." Though he's primarily someone who works best in the studio recording and producing music, Nickolas likes to develop a rapport with artists through writing with them. He's written with Welshly Arms, Never Loved, and Cassadee Pope ("What The Stars See," which he also produced), as well as several local independent artists in the rock, alternative, and pop music world in Nashville. Now signed to Waldman Management, because of his team and tools like Zoom, Nickolas has had his busiest and most successful year yet. Working digitally has allowed him to work with more artists outside of Nashville – and expand his repertoire in the process. Nickolas is the recipient of several ASCAP Pop Awards, and in 2007, he was the recipient of the ASCAP Vanguard Award. He was also inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame in 2008. More than two decades of experience have primed him with the knowledge, passion, and drive to launch his own freestanding studio. Ground was broken for Wheelhouse Studio in September 2020 and for more info you can visit https://www.nickolaswheeler.com/

The Blue Stones released their sophomore album, Hidden Gems on March 19th via Entertainment One. For the album they had the opportunity to work with producer Paul Meany (Mutemath, Twenty One Pilots), who led the band to explore and create music in a different way than they had before, as well as approach and tackle lyrics in an entirely new light. While making the album, Tarek learned confidence and strength-of-self not only in his personal lives but in the lyrics he penned through expressing acceptance of his flaws and growth from heartbreak, which also translated into taking more musical risks. When Jafar and Justin Tessier (drums/vocals) formed The Blue Stones, they were facing uncertainty about who they were individually. What they did know for sure, though, was that they wanted to make music together - and, so they did. Following the success of their debut album, Black Holes, the band quickly found a following in the alternative rock world that led to them sharing the stage with the likes of grandson, Welshly Arms, and Reignwolf. As the band were working with Paul Meany on what would become their sophomore-effort, Hidden Gems, they realized they wanted to take the sound they had become known for and give it a new edge. Across the ten songs on the album, the band pairs rock songs built to be played in a stadium with layered, R&B leaning numbers and moody, grunge tracks. The songs resonate with a powerful emotional intensity both sonically and lyrically, with Jafar penning his most personal lyrics to date. Centered around self-confidence, the album works through accepting your strengths and weaknesses, touching upon heartbreak and bad habits. Thank you for listening! Sam’s credits have grown exponentially since, including cuts with Dixie D’Amelio on her groundbreaking #1 debut "Be Happy" featuring blackbear and Lil Mosey (which has surpassed 100M+ streams), Adam Jensen, Jared Lee, Peking Duk and Alisa Xayalith (of The Naked And Famous), Welshly Arms, and more. Now, after years of honing in on her craft and helping others find their voice, Sam DeRosa shines in her own spotlight and gets her due on The Medicine.A sincere glimpse into the singer-songwriter’s sensibility, the EP opens with “Unfinished.” Sam notes, “I really wanted ‘The Medicine’ to start the whole EP and I knew that I wanted to touch on this idea that maybe this is what it is. Maybe we are just meant to be open-ended and there's no ending, and there’s no reason for that?”Also featured on the EP is fan-favorite release “Sad Faces” which comes at a time where we all need to take a moment to pause for a mental health check. The songwriter behind mega-hit “Be Happy” by Dixie D’Amelio continues to step into her own, her slick vocals eclipsing over a magnetic drumline that has you hooked instantly and positions her as not only a force behind the scenes but as a welcomed face in the incredible squad of artists who are sharing ‘sadgirlpop’ with the world (à la Julia Michaels and Sasha Sloan).Other songs that complete the body of work include “321” and slow-burner “The Medicine.” Penning the track from her own experience bumping into an ex, “321” perfectly captures the universal emotional turmoil that takes over you from the unexpected encounter. On the title-track, Sam says, “I’ve always wanted to write a song called ‘The Medicine’, but I didn’t realize that it would end up being a part two to ‘Pill For This’. This whole body of work is meant to be the start to finish of my journey to closure and surviving...”The EP closes out with none other than “Pill For This” - the song that uprooted the trajectory of her music career forever, following her SONGLAND appearance on S1E1 with fellow Berklee student and pop artist Charlie Puth. While “Pill For This” began as a quest for the cure to a broken heart, the life of the track itself has evolved a hundred times over and ultimately opened a door to a new season for self-love, acceptance, and prosperity for the rising star.“The whole idea of my EP is supposed to feel like I’m walking myself through my own love rehab. From track one until the final track, I really wanted it to feel like each song is a full day of healing.” Sam DeRosa elaborates, “Hopefully someone will hear this and feel like I’m right there with them - whether we are stumbling home, dancing around the house, or crying it out on the bedroom floor. I’ve been there, so I’ll sing them through it.” She also asserts, “There are a lot of people who can’t process what they’re feeling, so my responsibility as an artist and songwriter is to speak my truth as best I can with the hopes that it will help someone else who’s hurting.”We want to hear from you! In Episode 33, we sit down with new Wilkes-Barre folk funk band Fake Fight, which features members of Half Dollar and solo artists Jordan Ramirez, Brendan Brisk, and Michael Stec with Stephen Stec. They play three original acoustic songs for us in the studio before their debut “Pete Horse” EP is released. Before and during the interview, we drink crowlers of Sköll Och Hati by HammerHeart Brewing Company, Mass Rising by Jack's Abby Brewing, and Sidecar Orange Pale Ale by Sierra Nevada Brewing that was put through a Randall of candy corn, which was made exclusively at Beer Boys. They all go over well for very different reasons. We talk about this new project and how it came together, what "folk funk" is and how the term was coined, the local music scene and the importance of collaboration and encouragement over competition, the quick and organic development of their sound, their other musical projects and how they informed this band, open mics, going from the name Elijah Would to Fake Fight, opening for The Wood Brothers at the Sherman Theater in Stroudsburg, and more, including some funny stories, like that time Jordan got kicked out of a Renaissance fair. We also read a few comments and give away free tickets to Alt 92.1's concert with Bleachers, Bishop Briggs, Welshly Arms, and The Struts at the F.M. Kirby Center. Loved meeting with Vaynermedia intern Leo to chat about his time at Vayner, where his head was at and his aspirations for where he wants to go. He brought up an amazing question about how to best utilize the tiny percentage of time that's not already taken up by attending Law school, and I know you'll all benefit from this answer. Hope you enjoy ;) By the way, love the new intro? The song used in it is "Legendary" by Welshly Arms.

Justin interviews Sam and Jimmy from Welshly Arms, who are releasing their debut album this week and will be performing at the House of Blues in Cleveland on Saturday May 9. We talk about how the band got started, the agony of choosing an album/band name that isn't too goofy and isn't too serious, the power of no, tips for local bands, and through a series of strange coincidences realize what a small world it is.
On this week's episode, Justin Markert sits down with Emily Hornack, the co-founder of Brite Winter. Brite Winter is a free annual music and arts festival. In it's 6th year, Brite Winter will host 63 bands across 9 stages in Ohio City on Saturday, February 21 to an expected crowd of over 20,000.Justin (who was recently hired as Program Director for Brite Winter) and Emily talk about the the early years of the fest, what this year will be like, and if anybody actually does give a F&$% about an oxford comma. You'll also hear music from a variety of Brite Winter performers including By Light We Loom, Welshly Arms, Brian Straw and Archie Green.
