Luke grew up steeped in a disparate sonic concoction of classical music, 90's country, and a heavy (and healthy) helping of CCR and Motown. Homeschooled and sheltered in the stifling arms of an evangelical Southern Baptist church, it wasn't until the rebellious teen years that he began to delve into the truly sinful and purely carnal rock music of NIN, Nirvana, and Sublime. His college/drunk years introduced him to the gods of the rock genre, with a years long obsession with the iconic Led Zeppelin and Rage Against The Machine, that still rears its head from time to time (particularly on road trips). The Blue Stones released their sophomore album, Hidden Gems on March 19th via Entertainment One. For the album they had the opportunity to work with producer Paul Meany (Mutemath, Twenty One Pilots), who led the band to explore and create music in a different way than they had before, as well as approach and tackle lyrics in an entirely new light. While making the album, Tarek learned confidence and strength-of-self not only in his personal lives but in the lyrics he penned through expressing acceptance of his flaws and growth from heartbreak, which also translated into taking more musical risks. When Jafar and Justin Tessier (drums/vocals) formed The Blue Stones, they were facing uncertainty about who they were individually. What they did know for sure, though, was that they wanted to make music together - and, so they did. Following the success of their debut album, Black Holes, the band quickly found a following in the alternative rock world that led to them sharing the stage with the likes of grandson, Welshly Arms, and Reignwolf. As the band were working with Paul Meany on what would become their sophomore-effort, Hidden Gems, they realized they wanted to take the sound they had become known for and give it a new edge. Across the ten songs on the album, the band pairs rock songs built to be played in a stadium with layered, R&B leaning numbers and moody, grunge tracks. The songs resonate with a powerful emotional intensity both sonically and lyrically, with Jafar penning his most personal lyrics to date. Centered around self-confidence, the album works through accepting your strengths and weaknesses, touching upon heartbreak and bad habits. Thank you for listening! This is one wild wolf that can’t be caged and consumes anything and everything in his path. He does his thing live, large and walks a musical tightrope without a net. On this week’s episode of SMI Radio I chat with Reignwolf to talk about his style is approach to his live performances and his blues-based, gritty, raw Americana rock sound. Back in the 1990′s band’s like Nirvanna, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Screaming Trees helped lead a rock and roll revolution and collectively contributed to putting Seattle on the music map. Another Seattle rock outfit called Truly earned a ton of respect but their sound defied the grunge classification. Truly featured former Screaming Trees skin pounder, Mark Pickerel, former Soundgarden bassist, Hiro Yamamoto and the smooth yet menacing voice and overdriven guitar stylings of Robert Roth. The power-trio was first championed in the 90′s by DJ and tastemaker, Marco Collins while he was on air at 107.7 The End. The band’s first full length record and sonic masterpiece Fast Stories From Kid Coma released on Capital Records garnered praises from MTV and Steve Kurutz of Allmusic. Kurutz gave the album four and a half stars, calling it “a loosely based concept album. After weeks of attorneys, contracts, and negotiations... ok, never mind... we just asked and she said yes... Dawn Taylor and Patrick join us in the studio for some chat on the deterioration of service and a look back at The Breakfast Club. We also drink MANY beers as we go over Musicfest NW and how much Reignwolf kicks ass, Sean almost getting splattered like a bug, earthquakes, organic food, and old slangy terms for being drunk. Main St. Homebrew provided us with a delicious Space Stout from Laurelwood. It was a good day!
