"Quarter Life Crisis" with JB and Rig is a podcast for those who don't have a clue what their next move is... and neither do we. Tag along as us two knuckleheads (a former NHL draft pick and your everyday Male Nurse) chat about how normal it is to have yo
Ever wonder what it's like to take off to L.A. and chase the road to stardom? We only hear of people far-off in the distance that make the trek out to the big city to chase their childhood dreams. Now, what if we told you that we could get down to the nitty gritty with someone who actually took the plunge and drove to the west coast to shoot his shot (with just 1500 dollars to his name). Insert James Heugh... a former mixed martial artist turned professional acrobat from the small town of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Now James may not have become the Oscar winning actor or the lead vocalist that we tend to think of when people head to "The City of Angels", however, he found his own niche in acrobatics which absolutely took off for him. He became an "America's Got Talent" Finalist and was featured on "Ellen" for his talents. But don't let his huge smile fool you as it wasn't always rainbows and butterflies on this guest's journey and he goes deep on the adversity that he faced on his way to becoming one of Santa Monica's finest Acrobats.
With March Madness just rapping up, there is no better time to get life advice from an NCAA National Basketball Champ, Mike Brkovich. This week's guest travels back to his college days at MSU and discusses what was it was like shooting the three ball alongside Magic Johnson. He not only dives deep on his successful basketball career but he also discusses the struggles of going away to an American college and what happened after basketball. Despite beginning his career a few years later due to his dream of becoming a professional baller, Mike has shaped into one heck of a success story. He is now the owner of multiple properties around the city of Windsor, one of which being the major local beer spot, "Walkerville Brewery". But, don't let this fool you... because you would never know this about our guest "Mikey B". He is one of the most humble guests we've had the pleasure of interviewing and he dives in to why he thinks humility is the key to a happy life. Who would've known "The Golden Arm" had this in his repertoire... Strap in for episode 25, this one is GOLD!
Welcome back QLC fam, it has been a while since we last tuned in! Hope you studs are all doing well! Now, enough of the sob story... I want you to ask yourself. Have you ever debated going away after school, maybe for a gap year to travel the world, maybe in between jobs or maybe just to take a break and get out on your own for a bit. Better yet, have you thought about taking school or your job somewhere else and doing the full move? Well, JB and Rig can gladly tell you that they have this debate on the DAILY... On episode #24, QLC hosts will break down why everyone should leave the box that they have created and get out on their own. They go into detail and explain the three main takeaways from getting out on your own and why it's necessary (ONLY if within your means... this is very important). They also dive in on what it is like taking on a project with a partner, (say a podcast?) and the ups and downs of working alongside someone for an extended period. Strap in for this one, the boys are back!
Picture this... You're in school, on your way down a path that you always thought you wanted. Maybe go to college after, maybe university, maybe the workplace? When a couple life obstacles hit you right on the melon (your head). So, you debate why your doing what your doing... questions of why you were doing it in the first place start entering your melon (there it is again) and you can't seem to shake it. So you decide to take your life to a totally different place in the world... Become a surf instructor behind a taco shop, volunteer at an orphanage, open up a bar in Guatemala... maybe even a pizza shop?! Everybody, welcome to the insane life of Dustin Girard... On episode #23, you might learn how to take that risk, try something you've always wanted and more importantly… you'll learn how to ACTUALLY DO IT! We dive deep on what was running through Dustin's head when he decided to leave everything he knew to become a surf instructor and how this lead to owning one of the most popular bars in Guatemala. Warning… you're probably going to want to do something crazy after this one, so buckle up
When you look back at your school days (that might be right now for some) and think about all the people that played a role to get you where you are today. Now let's take that one step further and think of someone who left such an impact, that you can vividly recall certain lessons, messages or even the slightest gestures that stuck with you. JB and Rig have narrowed ours down and it's about time we share him with you too. So grab your bags and pull up a seat for this one because we're heading back to Mr. Koloff's class. You see... Mr. Koloff wasn't just any regular teacher. He was the one where you'd gladly put off your "faking sick" days to second semester so that you didn't miss his class. Each day there would be a take home message that we'd bring to the cafeteria, and one of the ones that stuck... to NEVER conform or lose your inner kid. Now enough of us talking, let's see what we can take home from Mr. K while we have him on the mic.
Ever look forward as you're studying for finals and think, "I can't wait to be making money and just start my life". Now let's look at it the other way... Have you ever glanced back, years into your career to think, "I'd do anything to be back in school...". Well, I think it's pretty safe to say that these are not uncommon thoughts whether you're in school or in the workplace. On episode #21, JB and Rig dive deep into differentiating the thoughts that come about when you're in the school age years versus the working years. And the highlight of this episode... The "Speed of Life" theory surfaces later in the discussion and each phase in our education/career is honed in on. Where do you find yourself in the theory? Is life zipping right before your eyes, or are you sitting on a blow up flamingo floating along a lazy river? Something to think about...
I think it's safe to say that we've all been there before… The sweaty palms before the big game, the butterflies in your stomach before heading on stage or better yet, the crippling nerves before meeting with a group of people. “Anxiety” is a loose term that we all deal with to some extent every day, but what happens when it goes that one step further? How do we know when it goes beyond our grasp? And how can we deal with this gloom that seems to be more and more prevalent every day? On episode #20, “@mdmotivator” Zach Dereniowski is an open book with JB and Rig and shares his battle with mental health. Zach goes deep on what exactly he was feeling at the time, how he managed to pivot out of his depression and his top tips of what we can do to deal with our very own struggles. From being vulnerable and posting his first video on mental health, to becoming a WORLD RENOWNED mental health advocate and TikToker… Zach teaches us what the term, "vulnerability", truly means.
There are 3 pillars that make up a QLC... your career, your relationships and your finances. Ever wonder the best way to set yourself up financially to coast however you'd like down the road? What you probably should be doing with your money? How to balance buying the new whip or saving for a future day? Well, today's the day... And we've got just the right guy to pave the way. On episode #19 with Nathan Kennedy, JB and RIG learn that they didn't have their finances in check like they had originally thought... Nathan dives deep on what to do after you make your first dollar. He goes through the TOP 5 things young professionals/college students can do to set themselves up for the future. He then shows us why it makes zero sense financially to stay in a career just because you started there. Stay tuned and keep your wallet close by. Oh and P.S. he is currently (RIGHT NOW) in the process of pivoting from his 9-5 into a big time financial influencer! Don't forget to check out his TikTok @newmoneypod...
Ever wonder how exactly people got to where they are today? More specifically, how they managed to earn millions of dollars in the process... The exact steps they took, what decisions they made, how much work went into it? Well strap in, because on episode #18, Entrepreneur and serial business owner Dan Crosby digs in on what it actually takes to get him where he is today. JB and Rig dig for what drove this guest to turn a supplement company start-up, into a money pit of successful businesses. And while the money is great and all, the main takeaway here is Dan's mindset. He doesn't hold back any secrets and shares with us his unique opinion on a variety of topics... One of them being why chasing your passion might not be the best option for a certain audience (excuse me?!). Tune in to hear when Dan decided to really turn it on and what he suggests for people going through a QLC. Beware, he doesn't beat around the bush this guy...
Picture this... You're in your university dorm, studying for finals when you get a phone call. They ask YOU to audition in front of some of the biggest names in music and you haven't played in over a year and a half. Fast forward a few months and now you're on stage, touring the states, with fans singing your songs louder than you can hear yourself sing them. Your songs are now being featured on Monday Night Football and Netflix Series "Suits". Let's just say that this Rockstar/Physiotherapist is far from a snooze fest... On episode #17, JB and Rig go the deepest with "The Blue Stones" lead singer and guitarist, Tarek Jafar. Tarek walks us through what it was like to receive the phone call that changed his life and how the pieces just started to fall into place thereafter. Tarek is currently working as a small town Physiotherapist but has pivoted more towards the music industry... and can you blame him? He opens up from the start of this interview and shares some big secrets to his success. The main one being that going full eggs in to do something you love might not be the best option for everyone. Having that solid ground (physiotherapy in his case) is what kept this rockstar moving forward and helped fund his dream. Let's find out where Tarek is at today.
The boys are back after Summer Break and are stoked to get rolling forward with Season 2! On this episode JB and Rig unpack the "Covid Summer" and how it caused everyone to gallivant their own countries (how many of you can say you went out west...). They dive deep on how it blows to live your life based on the people around you and how everyone just has to get up and fly the nest on their own at some point. They finish up by giving a sneak preview on the unique guests we'll be having on in the future (some with extreme 180 degree career changes and some that have worked for extreme wealth?). Stay tuned as Season #2 seems like it might be a doozy.
After a full season of outstanding guests showing their unique way of dealing with a "Quarter Life Crisis" we decided to top it off with some parmesan cheese... "Joey Teach". If you had questions about how to tackle your next few obstacles, say no more and hit the play button on episode #15 as we go deeper than we've ever gone thus far. "Joey Teach" is pretty much a father figure to everyone and anyone, and makes us feel at ease by absolutely deconstructing and simplifying this thing they call life. Instead of your traditional interview style podcast, JB and Rig present several topics that everyone should have asked themselves prior to going headfirst into their career (regret, happiness, who they have winning the Euro Cup... you know, all the important things to think about). Make sure to buckle up for "Joey Teach" on the Season Finale of the Quarter Life Crisis.
Ever wonder what it's like to take the stage at a country music festival? In this episode our guest tells her story of what is was like to trade in her scrubs for cowboy boots, and bet on herself. Kelsi Mayne tells Rig and JB about the ups and downs of the music industry and what it takes to go the distance. Kelsi Mayne is a singer, entertainer, athlete, and nurse and she is here to tell us how all of these identities come together.
Being an influencer has easily become one of the most popular careers that everyone seems to want a taste of. Whether a YouTuber, Instagrammer, TikToker... how do these influencers get to where they're at? Tag along as business dropout Eric Langlois goes deep on how he became a well known influencer in the nursing world. He discusses how difficult it was to do a complete career flop, but more specifically where it got him today.
There are three things that everyone has to ask themselves when going after their careers... Well at least the QLC GUYS think so... On episode #12, JB and RIG cover these three must ask questions and discover that sometimes your answers may change on the daily. Tune in to gage where you're at, you might surprise yourself.
Welcome to Ep 11 of the QLC podcast. If you've been with us from the start you are probably wondering what co-host JB actually does for a living?! Well here's the Ep where we explain it all! After taking the cookie cutter approach to life JB uncovers that that is the very thing that led him to his QLC. After being valedictorian of his University graduating class and achieving his dream job before he turned 25, this kid wants more! He shares with us what is next in his pursuit of a dream that he has kept to himself for years...
Ever wonder what it's like to show up to work in flip flops and a snapback... to get away from "the real world" and sit back and chill? Well, we've got a good idea of where you can start. On Ep #10 JB and Rig are floored by guest Danielle Chevalier and how she manages to be an absolute boss (literally and figuratively) while staying so laid back and "chill". Deep down, the QLC hosts realize that there has always been this desire to jet and open up a surf shop somewhere secluded... Well... this guest actually did it. Let's take a look how!
Rig and JB dive into some speculation of the time on earth, and how we have come to 2021, proving how little they actually know about science... They also discuss the Instagram façade and call into question, do you live your life for yourself or to impress other people? If you couldn't post life updates online, would you be living life a little different...? We don't know that answer, you are going to have to ask yourself!!
Quarter Life Crisis or Quarter Life Quandary? This kid said he's not in a crisis…YET. Tune in and hear University of Michigan graduate and NCAA golfer Bryce Evon talk about his journey through his early twenties where he tee'd it up against some current PGA powerhouses, and why he left golf behind to follow his passion of teaching. 25 and engaged, hear how he is facing some big life decisions and how he is working through them. This new teacher will school you in what it means to be thankful, and how to maximize our most precious asset in life…TIME!!
Have you ever been lined up by your barber/hairdresser? JB and Rig unpack the story of how an 18 year old kid from Ottawa, moved across the country and is now an elite barber in one of the most upscale neighbourhoods in Downtown Vancouver. Some of us are still trying to find our "spark" or passion in life. While Johnny B. knew from a young age he was born to cut hair. Fresh out of high school Johnny B met his QLC head on, put on his blinders, and bought a one way ticket straight to the top! Johnny reminds us its not about taking the scenic route, but that the view at the top is amazing!
Ever wonder what it's like to be in the shoes of a pro football player? You see, from our take, it looks like they've got it made... but don't jump too quick to say that an NFLer isn't still having the same debate that we're all having. Now... it might be tough to fit in this guy's shoes (considering he's a larger than life version of Jason Momoa) but tune in as we go WAYYYY DEEP with SAN FRANSISCO 49ER... Dakoda Shepley! Dakoda walks us through his multiple passions and talents (the guy is ridiculous...) and why "Pro NFLer" isn't the title he likes to consider himself. He maybe even unpacks why he's not so different from Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) from High School Musical? Listen in as Dakoda unpacks this Quarter Life Crisis and what his take is on hitting your QLC head on! Stay Tuned.
JB and Rig take a crazy deep look into each of their Quarter Life Crisis'. They discuss why they have completely switched spots in their lives (literally a full 180) and give an update on where they are at today. They also discuss something that's been holding people back for way too long and try to uncover how to deal with it. Hint... it has to do with being in a career you're not sure about... Let's see what these guys are up to.
JB and Rig totally deconstruct a motivational fitness mogul... Mackenzie (Siddall) Jalalpoor. She discusses how she went from an HK undergrad to starting her own business and is in pursuit of turning her "Side Hustle" into her full time career. You see, Mackenzie's the type of person that has had many wrenches thrown her way and always seems to come out cheesing. She takes us through the obstacles along the way and absolutely dives in on her secret of "continuing to move forward". Let's see where this "gratitude" guru takes us. You can check her out on Instagram @aogwindsor
JB and Rig take a look back on 2020 and discuss how much of a s*$! show it was… But wait... was it really? They shoot it about how two different people came about from this pandemic and which one you want to be going into 2021. They end off by asking each other 5 random questions about this "fiasco" of a year and what came from it.
JB absolutely breaks down the first guest on the show… the co-host Hunter Smith (Rig). Big Deal eh… Well you see, Rig is a former professional hockey player that was selected by the Calgary Flames in the second round of the 2014 NHL Draft. Rig briefly takes us through what it was like to be a sifter at that level and dives in on how he deals with saying goodbye to his former dream of playing in the NHL. Let's see where he's at today.
On the pilot episode, Rig and JB go through your basic high school syllabus on what “Quarter Life Crisis” is all about. We chat about what a QLC is, who's affected by it and how you might not know you're in one yourself. From being expected to have your stuff figured out to shooting your shot early on, we chat about all of that on “The One with The High School Syllabus”.
