Can you be a Christian and be gay? Tim Rymel spent nearly 20 years emphatically answering no to that question. Born into the fundamentalist, Pentecostal Christian faith, he went into the ministry at 15-years-old, pleading with God to make him straight. His desperate journey led him into conversion therapy (among the Ex-Gay Movement), where he went from participant to leader at what was once the world's oldest and leading ex-gay organization. He, and the prominent ministry staff, including John Paulk, John Smid, and other Exodus leaders, suddenly found themselves thrust into the national media spotlight at a time when the battle between the LGBTQ community and the evangelical church was heating up. Michael and Tim discuss Tim's story as told in his book, "Going Gay." Hear Tim's thought-provoking account of one man's journey to accept and understand himself. In a culture where faith and sexuality seem often to be at war, Tim brings insight and light to the conversation. They also discuss Tim's other book, "Rethinking Everything When Faith and Reality Don't Make Sense," and how important and freeing it is to have a reasoned, fact-based faith or philosophy of life. In Episode 21, Micah hosts Tim Rymel, author of Going Gay, which is about his personal journey from evangelical minister to self-acceptance, love, and meaning. Tim also authored Rethinking Everything, which examines the foundation on which American evangelical Christianity is based and explains how the relationship between this 300-year-old Christian sect and conservative politics began. He's also a contributor to the academic publication Negotiating Spiritual Violence in the Queer Community. He's written hundreds of articles on the confluence of religion, politics and sexuality for HuffPost, The Good Men Project, Medium, and other outlets.
In episode 3 of Religiosity we talk with author, activist and podcast host, Tim Rymel, about his journey from identifying as an ex-gay Christian, to embracing his sexuality. He's now an activist who speaks out against conversion therapy and the damage caused by fundamentalism.
Last season, Chuck and Brady spoke with Curtis, who lived through gay conversion therapy. This season, a former leader of Love in Action (gay conversion therapy) and author, Tim Rymel, tells his experience. TW: This episode can be triggering for those who had to disassociate from their sexuality to survive in Evangelical envirnoments and others. Tim promoted the notorious gay conversion therapy organization he helped organize and led. But over the years, he realized that the organization wasn't honest. His inquisitive mind compelled him to keep asking questions and not making excuses when there was no good answer to be found. In addition to leaving Love in Action, Tim eventually left the faith he always knew. But that is where he found himself. The episode includes several gripping coming out stories. Time Rymel grew up under the incredibly dogmatic and restrictive religion of Pentecostalism. At a young age, Tim realized he just wasn't attracted to women like he was "supposed" to be. But, his intense belief system didn't allow for that sort of thing, so Tim felt compelled to pursue gay conversion therapy. After he was "cured," he married a woman and became a leader in "ex-gay" ministry. Eventually, though, things began to unravel... Check out Tim's website, and also his Facebook group. I talk with Tim Rymel, author, educator, and rethinker, about his experience as a leader in the gay conversion therapy movement. Tim grew up Pentecostal in a small town in California, and from a young age, he knew he had same-sex attractions. He also knew that he needed to pray away the gay. His journey from an unshakable conservative Christian to a progressive social justice writer has been long and arduous. Tim married a woman, had two kids and spent years as a key figure in the ex-gay movement. But after his divorce, he realized that he needed to live his authentic life and is now happily married to a man.
